Re: [newbie] digikam Sony P73 set up

2004-12-13 Thread Martin Hardie
Hi All

I am still struggling with this digikam thing. When i set up the camera as the
usb mass storage and open the window it says it is conencted but nothing
appears.

I hav tried this:> tail -f /var/log/messages

and nothing appears when i plug and unplug the usb.

If i try and mount /mnt/camera - i get a mesage bo such block device (or
something similar)

I friend from chatjunkies #linuxhelp tried to help me by looking about ... he
ran

  203 lsmod
  204 modprobe ide-scsi sd_mod sg vfat
  205 modprobe usb-ohci
  206 dmesg | grep scsi
  207 modprobe ide-scsi
  208 modprobe sd_mod
  209 modprobe sg
  210 modprobe vfat
  211 modprobe usb-ohci
  212 modprobe usb-ohci
  213 modprobe usb-uhci
  214 modprobe modprobe usb-storage
  215 modprobe usb-storage

all which showed no results

I am wondering if this is a USB problem i have

I also looked at the cameras supported by my version gphoto2 - it does not
list usb mass storage - I thought it should as I understod that digikam "ran
on top of" gphoto2

Has anyone got any ideas

At the moment I have to download photos on my windows partition and then copy
them across.

Thanks

Martin

[newbie] Acrobat Reader Install Problem

2004-12-13 Thread Graham Watkins
Greetings,
I tried to install the Acrobat Reader yesterday, something that worked
perfectly under 9.2. However the install only proceeded to the point
where I got the following error message:

Installing platform dependent files ... Done
./INSTALL: line 219: ed: command not found
ERROR installing /usr/local/Acrobat5/bin/acroread
Line 219 of the installation file reads:
ed -s "$i" <<__EOF__
as my programming knowledge is considerably less than rudimentary, I
cannot see what correction is required.

Anyone encountered and managed to deal with this program?
All help and advice appreciated.
Cheers,
Graham

[newbie] Installing Mdk 10.0 on primary slave

2004-12-13 Thread Cameron MacDonald
Hi all- I'm having trouble installing Mandrake 10.0 on my machine I just
built. I have Windows XP on primary master (160G), and I want to put Mdk on
pri. slave (80G). I've used these install disks on my old machine (with XP
on the master also) and had no prob. When I boot from CD, I choose
"install or upgrade", then I get a black screen with "Mandrake 10.0, etc"
at the top and "Alt-F1, Alt-F3, Alt-F4" choices at the bottom (which don't
respond when keyed). It never loads into memory or goes anywhere. Any help?
Has my install disk failed? (Step-by-step would be appreciated.)

Just on the side here, if you are not comfortable with the command line
yet, you should not try to log in to a graphical environment as root.
With Mandrake, you do not need to, and this option has been disabled
starting from mdk9.2 I think. This is why you searched in vain for the
option in the graphical startup mode.
This does not mean that you don't have full control of your machine. It
just means that you have a buffer to absorb your initial mistakes, and
this is called a user account.
Using the info in all the above replies, you should be able to get a
user account back on its feet, which will enable you to perform
administrator level tasks through kdesu, sudo, etc.

Correction - it's expecting an already encrypted password. Take out the '-p
password' above, and set the password form the command line:

passwd myusername

That should do it for you.

1a) If you know the root password, reboot your system, and when the menu comes
up for Grub (it should show your kernel as one of the boot options), hit the
letter 'e', and then 'e' again. You will now be editing the options for that
particular kernel - add ' init 3' to the line, and then hit enter. Hit 'b' to
boot from it. This will put you into command line mode. If that's the case,
skip on to #2

1b) If you do NOT know the root password, put the Mandrake 10.1 Official CD
in, and reboot your system. Go into rescue mode, and it'll drop you to the
command line. Let it find your default installation, and then type:

mount /mnt/sysimage

This will chroot you into your Linux setup, and you'll be at the command line,
ready to add a new user.

2) Create a normal user:

adduser -p password myusername

Be sure to replace 'myusername' with the username you want to use, and replace
password with your new password.

3) Set the root password as well:

passwd newrootpassword

Now you can reboot the system again (pop out the CD if need be), then type:

reboot

Once it comes back up, you'll be able to log in as the new user, and you can
of course then su to root as necessary.

Um, at that level of knowledge it's still not hard. At the first prompt
type your desired user name. In this case "root". At the second prompt
type the account's password. Bang, Bob's your uncle.

I can not open a terminal. I am not logged in.
At login page there is no place for username, it just asks from me a

mean how can I login as root now ? I could login as root in text mode
as Mikkel said, but I will remain in bash mode.

All hope is not lost. First you need to be willing to work from the
commandline. "Cntl-Alt-F1" will present you with your commandline
prompt. Once there you can login as the root user. You're 1/3 of the
way home here.

As a test hit "alt-f2" and try to login as the alternate user you
created. If you can login you're 2/3 of the way home. If not you
must create a new user the hard way. "man adduser" is a start.
Mandrake appears to create users with a group the same as the
user name. Factor that into your "adduser" command. (I am not sure
of all the Mandrake options here. I'm a RedHat/Fedora fugitive and
new to Mandrake myself.) Some reading on the man page should help.
Once you've created the user give it a password with the "passwd"
command. If you created "newbie" then use "passwd newbie" to set
that account's password. You are now 2/3 of the way home.

Go back to the X-Windows login page. Perhaps refresh it by entering
a password. At worst you'd have to "telinit 3" then "telinit 5" to
get it to refresh and recognize the new user, if Mandrake did it
right. At that point login as the new user. Go to the system
administration tools for managing the system, select -system->
configuration->KDE->system->login. Then select the user's tab and
proceed to think negatively. Click on the users you do NOT want to
be able to login the X-Windows system via the login screen. If that
works you are done. If not you have to cheat. Go back to the commandline
and issue the "telinit 3" command as root. Then issue the "startx"
command to get into X-Windows as root. You should be able to use
the above steps from there.

Well, you could try userdrake, adduser, or useradd. At least 2 of those
will work from the command line. Most of the Mandrake GUI tools also have
a command line countpart. Some work both ways, and use X or ncurses
depending on the envirment they are started in.

A quick plug. I bought a Sony DVD DW-D22A about 3 months ago. $60 US, Dual
format, Double Density DVD+ support. It has been absolutely awesome. Worked
out of the box with K3b and X-CD-Roast and webCDwriter. I usually buy the
absolute cheapest media possible and this things eats through whatever I put
in at the top rated speed, no problems.

I haven't bought any of the double layer discs to try them out but just for
standard stuff, this burner is awesome.

Just write your document in open office, save it as .doc, and if anyone
complains, tell them that they are the ones who have compatibility issues!
I've been able to get away with it so far. In job applications even, a

Anyhow, if you take a look at the standards OO is able to conform to, like

compatibility problems.

Re: [newbie] /bin/sh: bad interpreter

2004-12-13 Thread Simon Roberts
The syntax that works for you ("sh xyz") says "start a shell, and have that
shell read this file, and follow the instructions in it". To do that, you must
have read permission for the file. By contrast "./xyz" says "execute this file"
and for that, you must have execute permission :) These two really are handled
differently, in the first case, you'll get by without the "#!/bin/bash" at the
first line of the file, in the second case, the kernel loads the file, then
examines it to determine _how_ to execute it (parsing, as it does so, the
#!/blah, which tells it that it has a script and what interpreter to invoke).

What seems really odd to me is that every other shell I've ever used
(including, I thought bash in the past/on other Unixen) say "cannot execute" if
they find the file you name as $0 on a command line doesn't have execute
permission for you. So, this error is really bizzare in my book. But whatever,
once you know, you can handle it, right?

Cheers,
Simon

Simon,

It is strange, as if I go to the directory where LinxuxInstaller.bin is and I do

sh ./LinuxInstaller.bin

LinxuxInstaller.bin runs!

No, it couldn't have gone smoother. Just opened up the case, checked the
jumpers (Dell seems to like setting all their ide devices to cable-select
rather than master/slave), plugged it in, and rebooted. Mandrake recognized
it, and K3B (version 0.11.17) burned to it, with no problems. The biggest
problem was removing the years of accumulated dust :^).

BTW, the name on the outside of the drive is WriterPlus by RetailPlus (never
heard of them before, it's a Walmart special :^). Internally, according to
"cdrecord --scanbus", it a 'TOSHIBA ' 'ODD-DVD SD-R5272' '1030'.

As a matter of interest, did you have any problems when changing the drive?

A couple of months ago, under 10.0 Official Download edition, I could burn
data CDs, but not audio CDs. It always got 95-98% done, then failed, no

So I would definitely recommend trying Charles' rpms if you haven't already.

Since then, I've upgraded to a slightly newer computer, a new DVD burner, and
Mdk 10.1 Official Download, and haven't had any problems at all, using the
version of K3B shipped with this version of Mdk, so I haven't needed Charles'
10.1 rpms (yet).

Hello.
I have a problem installing the MDK 10.1 Official.
It can´t load the sis_sata modules correctly.
I saw (trough Google) this is a general problem.
My question is if anyone has already compiled a specific module to
insert before the hardware detection.
Or if exists any other way (besides installing a PATA disk and
compiling the kernel) to do the installation.
Have also tried commands like "linux noapic, noloapic", and ACPI
disabled in BIOS, etc.

Thank you all.
Free Linux!!!
I don´t understand even why ASUS and SiS don´t have support for other
OS besides Microsoft. It's a shame...
