[newbie] Installing Mdk 10.0 on primary slave
Hi all- I'm having trouble installing Mandrake 10.0 on my machine I just built. I have Windows XP on primary master (160G), and I want to put Mdk on pri. slave (80G). I've used these install disks on my old machine (with XP on the master also) and had no prob. When I boot from CD, I choose "install or upgrade", then I get a black screen with "Mandrake 10.0, etc" at the top and "Alt-F1, Alt-F3, Alt-F4" choices at the bottom (which don't respond when keyed). It never loads into memory or goes anywhere. Any help? Has my install disk failed? (Step-by-step would be appreciated.) With Mandrake, you do not need to, and this option has been disabled starting from mdk9.2 I think. This is why you searched in vain for the option in the graphical startup mode. This does not mean that you don't have full control of your machine. It just means that you have a buffer to absorb your initial mistakes, and this is called a user account. You will now be editing the options for that particular kernel - add ' init 3' to the line, and then hit enter. Hit 'b' to boot from it. This will put you into command line mode. If that's the case, skip on to #2 1b) If you do NOT know the root password, put the Mandrake 10.1 Official CD in, and reboot your system. Go into rescue mode, and it'll drop you to the command line. Let it find your default installation, and then type: mount /mnt/sysimage This will chroot you into your Linux setup, and you'll be at the command line, ready to add a new user. 2) Create a normal user: adduser -p password myusername Be sure to replace 'myusername' with the username you want to use, and replace password with your new password. 3) Set the root password as well: passwd newrootpassword Now you can reboot the system again (pop out the CD if need be), then type: reboot Once it comes back up, you'll be able to log in as the new user, and you can of course then su to root as necessary. -- Take care, Randall Hobbs Programmer - System Administrator - Chip Castle Dot Com, Inc. Noe my system is completely dangled thanks to mndk, anybody > help ? urgent... > > Thanks, > > Danesh All hope is not lost. First you need to be willing to work from the commandline. "Cntl-Alt-F1" will present you with your commandline prompt. Once there you can login as the root user. You're 1/3 of the way home here. As a test hit "alt-f2" and try to login as the alternate user you created. If you can login you're 2/3 of the way home. If not you must create a new user the hard way. "man adduser" is a start. Mandrake appears to create users with a group the same as the user name. Factor that into your "adduser" command. (I am not sure of all the Mandrake options here. I'm a RedHat/Fedora fugitive and new to Mandrake myself.) Some reading on the man page should help. Once you've created the user give it a password with the "passwd" command. If you created "newbie" then use "passwd newbie" to set that account's password. You are now 2/3 of the way home. Go back to the X-Windows login page. Perhaps refresh it by entering a password. At worst you'd have to "telinit 3" then "telinit 5" to get it to refresh and recognize the new user, if Mandrake did it right. At that point login as the new user. Go to the system administration tools for managing the system, select -system-> configuration->KDE->system->login. Then select the user's tab and proceed to think negatively. Click on the users you do NOT want to be able to login the X-Windows system via the login screen. If that works you are done. If not you have to cheat. Go back to the commandline and issue the "telinit 3" command as root. Then issue the "startx" command to get into X-Windows as root. You should be able to use the above steps from there. {^_^} Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

Re: [newbie] /bin/sh: bad interpreter
The syntax that works for you ("sh xyz") says "start a shell, and have that shell read this file, and follow the instructions in it". To do that, you must have read permission for the file. By contrast "./xyz" says "execute this file" and for that, you must have execute permission :) These two really are handled differently, in the first case, you'll get by without the "#!/bin/bash" at the first line of the file, in the second case, the kernel loads the file, then examines it to determine _how_ to execute it (parsing, as it does so, the #!/blah, which tells it that it has a script and what interpreter to invoke). What seems really odd to me is that every other shell I've ever used (including, I thought bash in the past/on other Unixen) say "cannot execute" if they find the file you name as $0 on a command line doesn't have execute permission for you. So, this error is really bizzare in my book. But whatever, once you know, you can handle it, right? A couple of months ago, under 10.0 Official Download edition, I could burn data CDs, but not audio CDs. It always got 95-98% done, then failed, no matter what I did. This was using the version of K3B shipped by Mdk. Then I upgraded to the versions on Charles' web site, and it worked fine after that. So I would definitely recommend trying Charles' rpms if you haven't already. Since then, I've upgraded to a slightly newer computer, a new DVD burner, and Mdk 10.1 Official Download, and haven't had any problems at all, using the version of K3B shipped with this version of Mdk, so I haven't needed Charles' 10.1 rpms (yet). -- Ron ron dot hunterduvar at shaw dot ca Opinions expressed here are all mine. Re: [newbie] Hostname/Lan/SMB Problems
Thanks Adolfo. I will give that a shot, once the LAN problem is solved. Looks like I'll have to do things the "windows" way and just wipe the drive and re-install everything. [newbie] MDK 10.1 Official SiS 180 (P4S800D) ver. 2
Anyone? Asus P4S800D + MDK 10.1 + SATA Disk Please Thanks in advance to you all. António. :) -- Forwarded message -- From: António Jorge Mota Vasconcelos <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Sun, 12 Dec 2004 11:11:02 + Subject: MDK 10.1 Official SiS 180 Sata To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello. I have a problem installing the MDK 10.1 Official. It can´t load the sis_sata modules correctly. I saw (trough Google) this is a general problem. My question is if anyone has already compiled a specific module to insert before the hardware detection. Or if exists any other way (besides installing a PATA disk and compiling the kernel) to do the installation. Have also tried commands like "linux noapic, noloapic", and ACPI disabled in BIOS, etc. Thank you all. Free Linux!!! I don´t understand even why ASUS and SiS don´t have support for other OS besides Microsoft. It's a shame... Best Regards, António Vasconcelos.
