If it overheats before you can get into the BIOS, then the fan probably is going to need to be replaced. It sounds like it starts to run, and then binds up. You may be able to get it going again for a SHORT while if you can get at the bearings, and put a drop of oil on them. On some laptops this can be done with a toothpick or straw. [newbie] Installation problem - ?disc not being read
Hi I am attempting to install Mandrake 10.1 on an AMD Athlon 2000+ running WinXP. I've been to hardware devices list but little detail as it was a 'pre-packaged' system. Display adapter VIA/S3G, legacy audio drivers. I put the first disc in and the options highlight when I hover the cursor. Clicking on the right hand options of "discover on line store", receive assistance" and 'keep your computer up to date' cause Firefox to load and a request to connect to internet. Clicking on left hand options, including 'install' nothing happens. I rebooted with disc in situ and get the window with the two options " press F1' and "enter to install" Looked at F1 and then pressed enter. It appeared to start installing but then the monitor went black, with the words "proceeding, please wait ..." I waited 20 mins but no activity apparent i.e. no noise from box, and the indicator light not lit. How long should I wait? Could it be my BIOS settings still. The installation instructions mention PNP OS or Plug and Play OS, but I have been through the options in the BIOS and none match this. The two closest are "CPU PnP SetUP" and "PCI Plug and Play SetUp" and they both have a range of options. Any help greatly appreciated. However, AMD CPU's are notorious for running even hotter that Intel P4's. Your problem could simply be that the temp shutdown settings are too low. Try changing the settings in your BIOS - you can access it when booting the laptop. You should see a notice on the screen which tells you which key to press for BIOS access. Have a look at anything related to CPU Temp, Thermal Shutdown or CPU fan monitoring to see if there's a setting you can adjust. Be careful though! Turning off or changing the settings might cause the system to overheat and cause permanent damage! If you need to replace the cooling fan(s), you will have to order the correct fans from HP, assuming that they'll even ship them to you at all. HTH. Anybody can help??? Please tell me step by step to fix it since I have no experience with Linux. Do I need to re-install my Mandrake? Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Don't worry about those extra bits; they're totally superfluous. Contrary to what you may think, the number, size and position of mounting screws is not the result of careful analysis and experimentation, but rather involves a series of random choices, the only constraints being design must appear to be plausible to a casual observer, i.e. supervisory personnel. The same principle can be found in automobiles. I once had a 1955 Plymouth that lost about 2 or 3 pounds per year as excess parts were gradually removed, and it didn't run any worse when I sold it than when I bought it. -- cmg Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Any good detailed references on custom kernel compile options?
Is there any good references available that describe in detail the different options you can choose when creating a custom kernel compilation? [newbie] nvidia problems w/kernel 2.6.8.1-24
I haven't had any problems with the nvidia drivers since 9.1 when I started using Mandrake, but I need some advice here. I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.8.1-24mdk and rebuilt the nvidia driver with version 6111 from nvidia website. At first it didn't install because of the kernel source being /usr/src/linux symlink to lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Feb 3 20:22 linux -> linux-2.6.8.1-24mdk drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 4096 Feb 3 20:21 linux-2.6.8.1-24mdk/ Is this correct for the kernel source location ? does anyone else have this ? I did get it to run successfully with the addition of the --kernel-source-path (or whatever the switch was) Problem is, it *is* installed successfully but only root can run glxgears and glxinfo ... my user ricks gets a segmentation fault. I also checked a new user, testme, and had same results. So I thought it was a permissions problem but I can't find it .. [EMAIL PROTECTED] root #> glxgears 3975 frames in 5.0 seconds = 795.000 FPS 4840 frames in 5.0 seconds = 968.000 FPS [EMAIL PROTECTED] ricks $> glxinfo Segmentation fault [EMAIL PROTECTED] ricks $> glxgears Segmentation fault the line from /etc/security/consile.perms: 0666 0666 root.video [EMAIL PROTECTED] ricks #> ls -l /dev/nv* crw-rw-rw- 1 ricks video 195, 0 Feb 6 10:54 /dev/nvidia0 crw-rw-rw- 1 ricks video 195, 255 Feb 6 10:54 /dev/nvidiactl I changed the owner to root: crw-rw-rw- 1 root video 195, 0 Feb 6 10:54 /dev/nvidia0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root video 195, 255 Feb 6 10:54 /dev/nvidiactl made no difference .. I'm still reading the nvidia readme but was wondering if anyone had any ideas .. If you are going to be booting in the GUI mode, as most of the "live" CDs do, then it isn't too critical, as your selection will affect the CLI, and the wrong one means you will be able to read the boot messages. If all else fails, pick the first one offered. If I remember right, it should give you 25 X 80 text mode. Go here http://scan.sygatetech.com/ and do a scan of your computer. Its been a while since I used dial up, but I am not sure if the firewall GUI actually enables the firewall on dial up connections. If you want to confirm that, using your software install GUI install the 'webmin' package, then in Mandrake Control Centre>System>Services make sure the webmin service is running. Then in a browser go to https://localhost:1 (Note https NOT http) Log in as root. That will fire up the webmin web based configuration tool. Select Networking>Shorewall Firewall>NetworkInterfaces (Shorewall is the name of the firewall used by Mandrake. Shorewall can be configured using either the Mandrake GUI which is very simple, or by the more comprehensive webmin interface.) If interface ppp0 is not listed select 'Add' and add ppp0 to zone 'net' with 'Automatic' broadcast address. (ppp0 is the name of your dial up interface) Then use the 'Apply Configuration' button in the shorewall main menu to activate the new settings. Your dialup interface should now be protected.
