This is slightly off on a tangent, but it may be illuminating.
If you have a root prompt, you can start X servers by hand without using
startx, even. For example, you can type:

xinit -- /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 (or :2 or :3 or :4) for local sessions,
or you can start a session on a remote machine by specifying the display
as "foo:0" where "foo" is the hostname of the remote machine.

these are applied to the vanilla kernel tree, IIUC .. I am still reading the

If you mean you urpmi'd 2.6.8.1-24mdk-kernel-source and it doesn't build, the I

got borked in the install. Can't hurt. But thats as far as I got with my own

Rosemary, an easy way if you can not run without the system hanging, is to put
the DVD or CD1 into your device whichever it may be and boot from the cd or
dvd. Choose the install and then upgrade and let it run without choosing
anything but continue up to the last screen with all the "configure buttons"
choose the mouse button and select "universal ps/2 or usb mouse" and then
finish out of the upgrade. Take out the CD/DVD and it should boot with the
mouse functioning. HTH

[newbie] mouse

2005-02-20 Thread Rosemary McGillicuddy
I need a new mouse and have to say I am becoming very confused about linux
compatibility. Currently using a MS trackball one which works using PS2 but
it is driving me mad as the ball gets so dirty and sticks all the time. I
want to try optical. A4 NB30 optical mouse (USB) was recommended in a local
store so I bought it home to try it out but mandrake seems to hate it!

If I attempt to boot with it plugged in the boot stalls. If I boot then
attempt to run hardDrak to see if it will detect, again it stalls. Same
thing if I go to Control Centre and Hardware. It is a nice light little
mouse so would be good to get it going. Is it likely to be too hard for a
newbie?

Thanks
Rosemary

I have been reading the vim tutorial and practising a little so beginning to
get some clues I hope!

First of all, a belated thank you to Bryan and the others who have
weighed in on my modem problem. I am beginning to see the wisdom of
your advisement to buy an external serial modem. If the
conversion of
a "winmodem" to a "linmodem" was a pain for you, it may be nigh
impossible for me. Upon downloading the (free) driver for my
particular SW modem and reading the prerequisites for installation,
I've discovered that I do not know what "kernel source headers" are.
My guess is that anybody who knows anything knows what these are and
where to find them in the Mandrake 10.1 CDs, and that perhaps
a person
who is as ignorant as I has no business trying to do this

Nevertheless, if one of you out there could help me find

it...

Thanks again,

The kernel source can be installed using urpmi.

I think if you do a search for files named "kernel-source" they will
appear in mcc (Have you found the software installer in mandrake control
centre?)
One problem you may have is that you need to know what kernel you are
running 2.4 or 2.6 and also the patch number.
This should be displayed when you boot the system, and in terminal
windows. It will be something like "2.6.something" with an mdk for
mandrake on the end.
The command "uname" run in a terminal will also display it for you. - I
think it is "uname -v" but it may be "uname -r", I cannot remember,
sorry!
Make sure you install the kernel source that matches the version you are
running!
HTH
Hugh

An easy way to install the kernel source is to run "urpmi $(uname -r)".
urpmi install the package. uname -r produces the kernel name you are
running.

Using $() runs and feads the output to into the
command line just as if you had typed it.

"messagebus" is actually somewhat of an invalid username in that it is longer
than 8 characters. So, it won't fit into the space on the "ps" output line.

I am no-kernel cooker and just made a few of my own recently to
learn how-to do it, plus see if I could. So far no problems.

To give you an idea how many patches are applied to mandrake
kernels, take a look here:
http://cvs.mandrakesoft.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/SPECS/kernel-2.6/
these are applied to the vanilla kernel tree, IIUC .. I am still
reading the kernel docs ..

If you mean you urpmi'd 2.6.8.1-24mdk-kernel-source and it doesn't
build, the I would uninstall *urpme* the kernel-source and re-install it, maybe
something got borked in the install. Can't hurt. But thats as far as
I got with my own kernel builds, and my nvidia driver builds now ;)

After you have completed typing your bulleted list and you hit _enter_ to
start the next paragraph, hitting the _enter_ key again returns the cursor to

It is not that simple in Postgres. When you install the system, there
is only one user created, normally 'postgres'. What you want to do is,
from root, to switch to user postgres (su - postgres) and then create a
new user for yourself. Good documentation can be found at

specifically about users:

The kernel source can be installed using urpmi.

I think if you do a search for files named "kernel-source" they will
appear in mcc (Have you found the software installer in mandrake control
centre?)

One problem you may have is that you need to know what kernel you are
running 2.4 or 2.6 and also the patch number.
This should be displayed when you boot the system, and in terminal
windows. It will be something like "2.6.something" with an mdk for
mandrake on the end.
The command "uname" run in a terminal will also display it for you. - I
think it is "uname -v" but it may be "uname -r", I cannot remember,
sorry!
Make sure you install the kernel source that matches the version you are
running!

2005-02-20 Thread Melissa Allen
On Feb 15, 2005, at 6:07 AM, Bryan Phinney wrote:
Never hurts to learn something. Well mostly, anyway.
The only reason that I suggest external serial is that in a lot of
cases, you
have to install a lot of developer tools to get a winmodem working and
even
then, it is simply not as fast or good as an external serial.
First of all, a belated thank you to Bryan and the others who have
weighed in on my modem problem. I am beginning to see the wisdom of
your advisement to buy an external serial modem. If the conversion of
a "winmodem" to a "linmodem" was a pain for you, it may be nigh
impossible for me. Upon downloading the (free) driver for my
particular SW modem and reading the prerequisites for installation,
I've discovered that I do not know what "kernel source headers" are.
My guess is that anybody who knows anything knows what these are and
where to find them in the Mandrake 10.1 CDs, and that perhaps a person
who is as ignorant as I has no business trying to do this installation.
Nevertheless, if one of you out there could help me find the "kernel
source headers", I would be most grateful.

Throw in the cost of the external serial models and you might want to
get one
despite getting the winmodem to work, which is what I did.
...and is probably what I will end up doing as well, but I would really
like to try to make this modem work, just so I can say that I did
it...

That's what I thought.
I urmpied 2.6.8.1-24mdk, but it doesn't build. I understand mandrake does
alter the code in it's sources, and I believe (rightly or wrongly) that I may
loos functionality/compatibiiity if I go for the vanila kernel.

My real question is 'I urmpied 2.6.8.1-24mdk, but it doesn't build'. Has
anyone else had this problem, and can they suf=ggest anything?

[newbie] compiling/installing problem

2005-02-20 Thread Hugh Dixon
Not sure if this really belongs on this list, but here goes.

I have downloaded the mandrake 2.6.8.1-24mdkcustom source, and tried to build
a kernel - just for fun (am I too warped?) so made no changes to the config
that I would expect to cause problems.
The source does not link. I get an error in arch/i386/kernel/built-in.o of two
undefined references, thermal_interupt and machine_real_restart.

I don't expect anyone on this list to fix the problem, but am wondering if
anyone has successfully built this kernel, or can suggest a reason mine doesn't
link.

thanks,

Hugh

I use win4lin when I have to - but that's getting to be a rare occasion.
Actually, I had a lot of problems with it on this (the 10.0) box. I'll have
to get round to installing it on a 10.1 box and see if it's ok there - it's
just that because I need it rarely I never seem to get round to installing.

One point that probably should be cleared up - it doesn't matter where X
is started from. You could have started the first X secession from tty5,
and start the second one from tty1, or the first one could be started by
booting into run level 5. You can even start one using "startx -- :1"
before starting a second one using "startx". (startx defaults to :0
unless you tell it different.) The first one started will use the first
free Vertual Console. This is tty7 with the default setup. The second
one will use the next free VC, and so forth. You are not limmited to just 2.

[newbie] Why does ps shows uid for dbus-daemon-1, but user name for all other processes?

2005-02-20 Thread Michael Woinoski
On Mandrake 10.1 Community, when I run "ps -ef", the UID column shows the user
name for the owner of all processes except the dbus-daemon-1 process owned by
uid 72. The line for that process shows the numeric uid instead of the user
name. /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow and /etc/group all have an entry for a user named
messagebus with uid 72. Why doesn't ps display the user name for this process?

Thanks,

Anne; There's something else to consider as well. Win4Lin would probably
do a better job in any case. Sure, it requires that you have a copy of
Windows to install, but once the install is complete, Win4Lin runs as
smoothly as a normal Windows install, but with a few major advantages;

1) It runs as a virtual OS, so it's significantly faster,
2) It runs on top of the Linux environment and kernel, making it the
most stable version of Windows on the planet,
3) Win4Lin is about to release a new version (Win4Lin Pro)in the next
few weeks which uses Windows 2000 Professional or WindowsXP, instead
   of Windows98 or Millennium.

You know, I've done it that way in Lotus 1-2-3, SuperCalc and whatever the one
I used before that was ;-) I guess there are methods in every package that
we either never find or only find by accident.

There are two ways of getting the gui for this.
Star menu > System > Configuration > Packaging > Software Media Manager
or
Mandrake Control Center (I have an icon added to my panel. If you right-click
on a blank bit on the panel at the bottom of the screen, select Panel Menu,
Add, then navigate as above and it will create the icon for you). From
there, Software Management, then Media Manager. You will see there a list of
the software sources that your system knows about. At the beginning, your
CDs will be the only ones there.

When you've seen what I'm talking about, close it down (you need to get rid of
the lock file) then go to step 2.

> > 1) Go to easyurpmi.zarb.org and select one source from each section.

OK - we'll call this step 2. Open a browser windows (Mozilla, FireFox,
Konqueror) and put in the url www/easyurpmi.zarb.org. This will take you to
a page where you will be helped to set up new, additional sources.

Make sure that you have the right version in the first choice - 10.1, I
presume. You'll find sections for Main, Contrib and a few others. In each
case choose a mirror from the dropdown list. It's a good idea to choose
mirrors that are not in your own timezone, as getting them in a quiet time
speeds up downloads.

Once you have chosen something from each section, click Go To Step 3 (I think
that's the wording) and a black box will come up with a long piece of text.
This is a set of commands. You can just copy them (mouse-highlight), then
open a console (black screen icon on tray), Session > New Root Console) and
paste in the whole of the commands you have just copied. It will take a few
minutes, probably, for the commands to set themselves up completely, but you
will be able to follow the messages where it tells you what it's doing. Once
that is complete you will have access to a great many other packages.

> > 2) Go to eslrahc.com, find the page for your version (10.1, I presume?)

Last step. Charles, on www.eslrahc.com has a lot of packages that are later
versions than Mandrake can offer directly, so it's a good idea to get his
site set up as a source. Go to his webpage, select 10.1, and you will find
not only a list of packages that are available, but a command for you to copy
and paste into a root console, as you did with easyurpmi's commands. You
could stop there, but if you do you will find that trying to install any of
Charles's packages gives you messages about missing signatures, so look again
at the webpage and you will find instructions for getting his signature onto
your system. It involves downloading and installing CAE.asc.

I hope that's a little clearer now. Come back if there's anything you don't
understand.

Got questions to make this thread richer ...

Q1: What if one wants to tar only the files and directories which are
not hidden
(i.e. no DOT files/directories)?

Q2: How do you use the "cp" command to copy everything like "tar" does
by default
(i.e. for copying exact duplicate of a directory tree without tarring)?

Thanks guys! =)

Good news. I am happy to hear you found the problem. Since it was the mp3
file that caused the error, it might not be worthwhile to do any more. At
this point, any info would go into simply making taglib and/or amarok crash
more gracefully for instances of whatever error your mp3 had.

Re: [newbie] Home directory

2005-02-20 Thread bascule
well the errors make complete sense, a file isn't writable if it doesn't exist
and each file mentioned is relative to the /home/user1(2) directories that
have been removed, kde needs files in the users home directory to start, it's
interesting that you can start icewm without a home directory but obviously
once you do you can't access kde files since there aren't any for that user,
i'm assuming that when you say the new user3 can log in ok you mean into kde,
since it has a home directory?
since the home directories for users 1 and 2 have gone you don't lose anything
by deleting the users and recreating them - since you've already lost it :( ,
assuming you can run mcc from the user3 login (with the root password root of
course) then you can delete the problem users and recreate them, this doesn't
explain why their directories were deleted in the first place, what mandrake
ver. are you? and what was the program you were trying to install when it all
went pear shaped?

[newbie] Freeze at startup using Mdk 10.1 Official

2005-02-20 Thread Andrea Colangelo
Hi all!
I have an unusual problem on my Acer Aspire 2023WLMi (a Centrino
laptop), and I hope someone of you can help me.

I installed (from dvd) Mdk 10.1 Official. Installing goes straight, and
he recognizes and configures pratically each device. First reboot goes
ok, and everything works well, except for the network interfaces that
are unconfigured.

Anyway, from second boot the problem appear. The boot goes straight up
to this point:

Inizializing firewire controller (ohci 1394) ... OK
Starting netprofil ... OK
INIT: entering runlevel: 5
Starting non interactive boot
Starting udev...
And then the system freezes for a couple minutes, with keyboard not
working and silent HD. Then it starts again and happily ends boot.

I disabled network services at boot, but nothing changes. I disabled,
udev, and freeze happens at "starting dkms". I disabled even dkms and it
freeze on "Starting pcmcia". Finally, I disabled all services, and also
changed the default runlevel to 3 and then 2: nothing changes.

A curious thing is that booting in runlevel 2 (so, without graphic and
nfs), the login prompt appears, and an istant later the system freeze. I
wait a couple minute, and the cursor start blinking again and I can log
and fully use the system.

No more ideas about the problem. Do you have any?
If you need details about laptop configuration or any system log, just ask.
Thank you in advance and sorry for my bad english. :)

[newbie] ATI RADEON 9250 . MDK 10.1 . DUAL DISPLAY

2005-02-20 Thread song

Hi all,
I don't know if some of you use the dual display (like M$) but I was working on my box for at least 2 days until yesterday. I finally got the 2nd monitor as an extension of my primary monitor. I know that for sure 'cause I can move my mouse and any windows. I also can see any windows on the desktop switcher.
The problem is that I see all the content of the primary monitor like it was a mask except that I can click on it.
Here's my box info:
motherboard: A7N8X-8
video card: ATI Radeon 9250 (dual head)
CPU: AMD Sempron +2400
I know there some issues about ATI/NVIDIA during my google search. This is what I've done so far:
NVIDIA grapic driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run
ATI graphic driver: fglrx_4_3_0-8.10.19-1.i386.rpm (but uninstalled for debugging)
A special attention was made with ATI. When I installed this ATI driver and user fglrxconfig, their XF86Config-4 didn't work thus generating an error:
(WW) no matching device (BUSID: 2:0:1) found... (something like this)
which I modified my original XF86Config.
Now my main concern is the glx/fglrx. Befor all this, I launch glxgears which worked until I install the ATI driver (fglrx_4_3_0-8.10.19-1.i386.rpm). I could see the 2 gears rolling (I think glxgears is something to show my 3D rendering). Now, either I user glxgears or fglrxinfo, I get this error:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] song]$ glxgears

And this is my /etc/modprobe.preloads:

How can I get my glxgears back?

[newbie] screensavers

2005-02-20 Thread Michel Leunen
All the kde screensavers in /usr/bin, the one with a name beginning with
a 'k' (which stands for kde I presume) doesn't appear in the screensaver
list under XFCE4. Is it possible to add them and use them with XFCE4? I
suppose it's possible since I can launch them by hand in a terminal but
I didn't find a way to launch them automatically when I'm under XFCE4.

Re: [newbie] Home directory

2005-02-20 Thread john
Hello
Thanks for response. Sorry for the confusion. I'll try again. When I
boot the system the login menu shows user 1, user 2, user 3. Users 1or
2, my wife and I, get the following error messages when I log in to KDE
under either user. Message 1: "Could not read network connection list.
//.DCOPServer_localhost_0." Message 2: "Will not save configuration-
Configuration file //.kde/share/config/ksplashrc not writable.
Configuration file //.kde/share/config/kdeglobals not writable." Message
3: "No write access to $HOME directory-Kde is unable to start." I can
log in to icewm but still have no access to any kde files. User 3 is the
new one and login is ok. The file /Home now only lists user 3. The files
/home/user1 or /home/user2 have been removed. Hope this is less confusing.
Thanks
John
