It might. :) It's the console I want to change to make it easier to read
what's on the screen. I did actually scoop the answer from someones post in

Ok Anne - I am new to Wiki but have applied for registration. Will

Re: [newbie] Emoticons etc. In Thunderbird

2005-01-31 Thread Alan Dunford
Apologies for the earlier question - the answer lies in Thunderbird
itself.

To access emoticons, fonts, underlining, bold text and so on set:-
Edit - Preferences - Composition - send options - send the message in
both plain text and html, and then a new tool bar opens under the
Subject line in Thunderbird's compose screen.

Apologies but someone might like that information. :-)

[newbie] Emoticons etc. In Thunderbird

2005-01-31 Thread Alan Dunford
Until I recently lost my Thunderbird installation I had a tool bar which
I assume I had downloaded as a theme. This had features such as a
facility to change fonts, underline text, add graphical emoticons and so
on. For the life of me I cannot remember where I got it and wonder if
any Thunderbird users recognise this feature and can point me into the
right direction. Of course I have searched for it but it seems to be
fairly elusive.
Thanks for any guidance.

Your right, this is my first beta install. I don't yet know about the cooker
ML. I'll go find it now and get subscribed.

My immediate problem is that /dev/dsp is missing. Don't know what happened to
it but I'll try your suggestions and see if I can get it back.

Hi,
Here we have an annoying problem getting CUPS/Windows to print. The
setup is a Linux box running Mandrake 10.0 Official and a Windows box

Canon BJC250 which is not a problem in itself.
Now CUPS on the Linux box of course appears to be set up correctly with
the Windows IP address recognised as also is the Canon printer. When I
sent a test page to the Windows machine I get a message that the page
has been sent BUT there is no such message in the Window print queue.
The in-built Windows firewall is off.
Print from the Windows machine itself is ok and the problem therefore
seems to lie between my Linux box and the Windows machine.
Any ideas please as I am rapidly losing what is left of my hair. :-)

does the linux box /etc/hosts, /etc/host.allow and /etc/hosts.deny and
windows box c:\hosts files correctly name the other box?

Also check /etc/cups/client.conf, particularly for
# ServerName: the hostname of your server. By default CUPS will use the
# hostname of the system or the value of the CUPS_SERVER environment
# variable. ONLY ONE SERVER NAME MAY BE SPECIFIED AT A TIME. To use
# more than one server you must use a local scheduler with browsing
# and possibly polling.
#
#ServerName myhost.domain.com
Put the windows box name into that line, if it's not already there.

Thanks to both for the above comments.
The changes suggested have now been made/checked with no improvement.
The appropriate lines are shown below:-
"router" is the gateway connected to my cable modem
"windows" is the box running XP and is the print server
"linux" runs my CUPS server and is my main workstation
"server" is a backup machine on the network
"foxsys" is the domain
/etc/hosts

ServerName 192.168.0.2windows.foxsys

Windows c:\system32\hosts contains the line:-
192.168.0.3 linux.foxsys #linux
My one doubt is the entry in /etc/cups/client.conf which I _think_ is ok
but should this have the entry "ServerName" ahead of the IP address etc?
So you can see I am still at a loss to explain the cause of the problem
- any further thoughts would, of course, be welcome - the alternative I
face is either reconnecting the printer or putting another one on the
linux box.
Thanks again for any further ideas. :-[

did you do a "service network restart" on the linux boxes and a reboot on the
windows boxes?

Thanks both for your comments - have rebooted windows and restarted the
network also with no change, Ed. Will edit the lines in the various
conf files, Anne.

Onward and upward - one way I suppose to spend a winter's morning (or
maybe week). :-)

Just by the way for some unaccountable reason, mail server would not
accept a normal "reply to" and bounced my earlier reply - will try
again. - this is a new message.

Technically you can use wine to run .exe under linux, but you should
better find a linux version of your program.
check out

good day all.
For the newbie question of the year.
I want to run a program (updatedd-wrapper) ¨a program that updates a ip
adress on a dns server¨ whenever i start my pc.
I want to run it in some way that the machine doesn´t have to wait for it
to complete cause it sometimes takes about 30-40 seconds to complete.

I would preferebly like it to start after kde is launched.
Thanks

[newbie] Stuck on a network problem

2004-10-22 Thread Alan Dunford

Here I run a simple network with three machines - two running Mandrake
10.0 and one running Windows. The second Linux machine operates as a
server on which I back up files from the other two.

Currently the server has a monitor, keyboard and mouse but I would like
to run it as a straight forward ftp server with just a system unit.
Therefore I need to be able to switch it off remotely as the only way
until recently was to use its local controls.

I have installed VNC on both the Linux machines which I can use to
switch off the server but have to set up VNC each time on the remote
machine as I lose the settings when that machine is shutdown.

How can I set up VNC, and its password, so that it starts when the
server is booted and therefore allows me to remove monitor, keyboard
and mouse from that particular machine.

 Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Not sure if this is particularly helpful as I am on a cable
network but in my own case, I used the Windows program provided
to establish the connection and set up my account with my ISP
(ntl). Then I just plugged the "modem" into my Linux box (I
think you wouldn't even have to do that as you switch between
Windows and Linux on the same box), and then set up Linux to
work with the new account. My ethernet connection worked first
time - now I have a router connected to both Windows and Linux
boxes with the "modem" connected as the link to the Internet. I
now work with either the Windows machine or the Linux one (or
both) without any problem.

Re: [newbie] A question to the talented

2004-10-06 Thread Alan
Thanks.
What ris does is allow you to boot from a network card and install windows
2000 and windows XP. The nice things is it an unattended installation and
it installs quicker than from a cd.

The reason I want to do this is that I sell a lot of pc's where clients
want WINXP installed and it is quicker for me to install this way around,
as you can do 5 pc's at a time (IF needed)

I hear red hat had something that does this. I am just trying to find out
if it is the same thing, or will I have to stick to windows server
versions.

Thanks

Just a thought.
"/windows/d" and "/windows/e" directories .. probably just data
partitions. Could convert /windows/e to ext 3 after cleaning it out. If
large enough you could save your /home dir with rsync (need a script
just ask) to it daily or just before logging off. If it is larger than
your excisting /home dir/partition you could move your home partiton to
this after doing the neccessary before logging off.

That will not work.
It is impossible to change the permissions of a file on a fat32
partition for
the simple reason that fat32 has no concept of file 'attributes'.

All we can do is 'spoof' the permissions of every file on the partition
when
it is mounted. This is achieved with the 'umask' option in the
appropriate
line in /etc/fstab

Setting umask=0 will force all files to have 777 permission.
If you prefer diskdrake can set that option for you be selecting the
fat32
partition Advanced options.

that's certainly a bummer. use froogle:

http://froogle.google.com/

and type in the search window:

australia pcmcia 56k modem

then in the list that results (i got over 800 hits), look for 56k pcmcia
modems that are priced better than $130. the before purchase, verify with
the seller that it is, in fact, a hardware modem, and not a winmodem,
softmodem, hfc modem etc. good luck and be careful, caveat emptor!

[newbie] Archives

2004-08-30 Thread Alan
Good day all

I asked a while ago about setting up a squid proxy server to do
authentication and somebody gave me a couple of URL's to look at and
being an idiot I did not save them.

I tried looking in the archives but the dates only go to 2003-11.. Is
this list still archived and if so where.

Alternatively you could just point me to the proxy authentication how to
guide again.

Many Thanks

I promise I will save the URL this time.

[newbie] Font problem

2004-08-15 Thread Alan Dunford

Yesterday I did a routine urpmi update - security, bugs and
normal updates but did not make a note of the programs to be
updated. I suppose about 30 programs in all were affected.

However, everything appeared to install correctly and the update
list is now empty, but the next time I fired up KDE I found ALL
my KDE fonts had changed - including Kmail.

Resetting everything manually took about half an hour and all
seems (more or less) ok now. Has anyone else experienced this,
what is the reason and how do we avoid it in future?

Any pointers gratefully accepted.

Thanks.

Thanks again Ron. Did a reinstall and the urls and jpgs burst
into life now as before. Still have a lot of tidying up to do
but the main problem is solved.

A friend of mine (in electronics) said that when you solder
connections on the end of a cable and when finished you find you
have forgotten to put a fitting on the cable first, then having
to do it again is penance for not doing it properly in the first
place. This is the price I am paying with Mandrake right now.

[newbie] Kmail problem

2004-07-30 Thread Alan Dunford

I need a little help, please, in setting up Kmail again. A
couple of days ago I added a Smart Media card reader to one of
my USB ports and (I assume a bug in the driver) as a result the
machine would not then boot. Later the USB driver was updated
and I noted that a bug had in fact been corrected.

The start up problem was then sorted using Mandake 10's CDs to
"upgrade" the OS and then all was well except that previously I
had been able to fire up a URL within Kmail and now cannot do
so. I don't remember having to do anything previously to create
a link here (I think to Konqueror) and cannot find anything to
help in the help files.

I imagine the problem is very simple and basic but it is also
proving frustrating and annoying.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Alan

Sets of Mandrake 10 Official (four disks) are available from Linux Emporium
for £10 including postage - next day delivery is what I got myself.

Not worth considering older versions at those prices.

Paul,

You can also try http://www.rarlab.com/rar/rarlinux-3.3.0.tar.gz . The
guys at rarlabs have a linux command line version that works well with
.rar files. The website indicates it's a trial version, but you could
say that I'm still trying it out. If that doesn't help, WinRAR works
well with wine.

the canon lide series includes models 20, 30, 50 and 80. the lide20 and
lide30 are supported, wheras the lide50 and lide80 are not as they are based
on a different chipset. the lide20 and lide30 are based on the National
Semiconductor LM9831/2 chipset for which a driver called the plustek driver
has been written.

[newbie] Image viewer

2004-04-10 Thread Alan Dunford

Like others on this list running Mandrake 10.0, I had a few problems with
Kuickshow - there is a bug in Qt and I could not get Qt3.3 going.

However I have come across a very similar picturefile viewer called Gwenview
which seems to do most of the things that Kuickshow does and although it
appears to have been developed for 9.2, it does work well with Mandrake
10.0.

See http://gwenview.sourceforge.net/download#stable

[newbie] SATA Promise 378 /

2004-03-27 Thread Alan Rolfe
I am running on a ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe board with a hard
disk on primary slave, a dvd and CDRW on Secondary master
and slave, two more SATA drives on ICH5R and all is
well.

Except the two drives on the promise PATA controller.
Mandrake sees the controller but doesn't detect the drives.
Windows works fine and everyone is happy.

Does anybody have any suggestion on how to "see" my other
two drives?

Thanks

I've been using Windows/XP, FreeDOS and various distro's of linux with lilo as
the boot loader for quite a while. I haven't had any ill affects from having
lilo in the MBR.

If you have the free space on your hard drive to create a linux partition just
insert the Mandrake linux install disk 1 in the tray, reboot and follow the
prompts. The installer will install the boot loader lilo in your mbr and you
will get a screen at reboot to choose whatever you want to run Windows/Linux
etc.. It's mostly painless but if you have questions...

In the meantime someone told me to try adding ""echo -en "\033(U"" to my
bash_profile and that has worked when I'm using one of the
consoles but I would like to make that work in Konsole so I can just open
Konsole from the desktop. Anyone know how to do that?

I assume you are running Mandrake 9.1. This is caused by a bug in the kernel
- if you enter the full error message in Google and search on it, you will
get a range of answers to the problem. This was a "problem" for me until
installing 9.2.

So far as I know, it never caused any difficulties with any programs I was

[newbie] Error messages

2003-11-19 Thread Alan Dunford
Yesterday (I think) a message was posted about an error message he was
receiving about his disks not being read. Unfortunately I cannot now find it
but it related to a bug in Mandrake 9.1's kernel.

However, the more general point I would like to make is if one posts an error
message into Google and does a search on it, then the problem and (hopefully)
solution have been posted by others who have come across it before. It works
for Windows also of course.

This has saved me a lot of head scratching in the past and it might be of some
use to others.

Re: [newbie] wineX

2003-06-20 Thread Alan Carbutt
Typically, wineX installs a .transgaming folder in your home directory
which has a symbolic link called Transgaming_drive also in your home
directory. All I have done in the past is to go into that directory and
find where I installed the program and delete the directory, like this:

cd Transgaming_drive/Program\ Files/
rm -rf Max\ Payne

Just an example, mind you. This should free up the disk space
associated with the game/program.

you're running into trouble becasuse you'vebeen trying to
resize ntfs partitions. you can download 'BootIt NG', a
shareware offering (it's uncrippled and comes with a 30 day
free trial license) from:

http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/

and put the installer on a floppy. i's self-booting and when
it starts you tell it you don't want to install and it then
becomes an in-memory partitioning/resizing tool that will
handle ntfs resizing. if you decide you want to buy it after
the 30 day trial it's only $34.95.

due to complaints that vigorous disk activity was occurring
when a system was first booted up (anacron running jobs that
were missed because the system was turned off), anacron was
not installed by default as of 9.0. install it and it'll
begin working.

urpmi anacron

Anacron can be used to execute commands periodically, with a
frequency specified in days. Unlike cron(8), it does not
assume that the machine is running continuously. Hence, it
can be used on machines that aren't running 24 hours a day,
to control daily, weekly, and monthly jobs that are usually
controlled by cron.

Re: [newbie] easy to use HTML editor?

2003-02-12 Thread Alan Carbutt
Angus,

If you have a copy of Dreamweaver, you can get it to run under Linux.
Check out http://www.frankscorner.org/wine/ to see how to get several
apps to run under wine, including Flash and Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver's
code is pretty clean, but there is no substitute for knowing HTML and
coding it your way in a text editor. I use Quanta, Bluefish and Screem
also under Linux when I don't remember the tags, but 9 times out of 10,
I'm using gvim for the nice syntax highlighting features. I've never
tried the install with wine, but I have other apps working under wine
and Frank's site has been a good reference.
Good luck,

++alan

[newbie] Adaptec 1200 ide raid controller.....problem

2003-01-13 Thread Alan Carpenter
I have two western digital 60 gig drives. Both were working fine on the
onboard controller. I installed an Adaptec 1200 raid controller. At first
I couldn't even get to the lilo. Once I went into the raid setup and setup
the drives, it booted to the lilo screen. Linux starts to boot, but hangs
with this message...

"kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-3, errno=z
mount error 6 ext3 flags mounted devfs on /dev"

Then I get a kernal panic and it stops loading.

Im guessing it has something to do with moving the drives to the
controller?? Any help would be great
