[newbie] Multiple Idenities Email
Is there an email client and/or work around to kmail's lack of multiple idenities? The client would have to be GUI based. Right now the only workaround I see is to create some more users and have their only purpose being to collect mail for me. That or change my idenity in the settings whenever I send out an email. So is there an email client (other than Netscape) that'll let me do this? It's the Linux registry. Since you can get Linux very easily without being tracked, some guys setup a registration service to more accuratly count how many people use Linux. Unfortunatly most people don't know about it, so the amount of officially registered users are small. [newbie] mkinitrd
I'm trying to upgrade my kernel through rpm's (since compiling from source hasn't worked) and so I'm following the guide from Mandrakeuser.org http://www.mandrakeuser.org/install/kupgrade2.html Anyways, I come to the part where it says to make a new initrd image, but when I type in the command it lists (mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.2.16-9mdk 2.2.16-9mdk) I get this error: mke2fs 1.18, 11-Nov-1999 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09 mount: Could not find any loop device, and, according to /proc/devices, this kernel does not know about the loop device. (If so, then recompile or `insmod loop.o'.) Can't get a loopback device It's not critical that I need SCSI support, but one of my harddrives (non Linux HD) is SCSI, and so is my CD-burner. This has happened on all my previous attempts with compiling kernels, but I had always figured I screwed up somewhere and that's why it gave me the error. But even now with rpm's I get it. The only way I know how to get totally out of X is to never start it. At the LILO prompt, type "linux 3" and it'll just dump you at the command prompt. [newbie] Huge Terminal Size
I'm having the wierdest problem. I was running Linux today like I normally do, and then all of the sudden when I'd open up a gnome-terminal, the size of the window was huge, as was the text. Normally, when I open one up, it takes up maybe 1/12 of the size of the screen. But now it fills about half the screen. The text is also about 3 times as big. This just happened, I didn't change anything or nothing like that. Just all of the sudden, I opened up a terminal and it was "big sized". I just rebooted to see if that might fix it, and it's still just as big. Yep, I had the same problem. But over the course of 2 weeks I've figured out
how to fix it.
Go to /etc/X11/. In there, there will be a "file" named "X"
which is actually just a link to the 3.3.6 X server. So remove that symlink
("rm X") and then create a new X symlink, except that this one will point to
the 4.0 xserver ("ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 X") Now restart X, and you
*should* be back in X4.0.
And on to that topic, what do you use to configure X 4.0? None of the
configuration tools seem to work for X 4.0, and only end up making you go back
to 3.3.6.

Compiling from source: Every newbies nightmare. But here's how to make it better. First untar the .tar.gz file by typing "tar -xvzf the_tarred_file.tar.gz". This will create a new directory. Go into that new directory. Read the readme file in that directory, it should contain further and more exact instructions on how to install that particular program. But 95% of the time, the instructions will be the same. In that directory, type "./configure". This will check to make sure you have all the proper libraries installed. If you get an error in this step, take note of what your missing and look for it on rpmfind.net. Then install the missing file with "rpm -Uvh the_missing_file.rpm" as root. Once you get past the ./configure stage with no errors, type "make". This will compile the source, and might take a little while. Once make is done, "su" to root, and type "make install". I installed 7.1 using Expert mode, and elected to install X4.0 along with the usual X. It defaulted to X4 when I first booted up Linux. Unfortunatly the mouse wheel didn't work and in the process of trying to get it to work, 3.3.6 became the default. I think how I made 3.3.6 the default was when I ran DrakConf, and tried to run the Xconfigurator tool. It then asked for the install CD and it looked like that is when it installed 3.3.6. When I rebooted, the wheel worked, but I was in X 3.3.6. I just finished upgrading. Two problems right now. First, "setup" is not installed. I'm not sure if this is my fault since I went through the expert install and picked all the packages (and just missed that one) or else if Mandrake got rid of it. I loved setup. Secondly, my mouse wheel no longer works. I have imwheel installed, and my wheel has worked in all previous versions, but for some reason it doesn't work anymore. Could it be because I'm running X 4.0? I'd appriciate it if anyone had any ideas on how to solve that problem, as it's almost annoying enough to go back to 7.0. Other than that, it's pretty nice. Harddrives are now mounted under /mnt/win_* instead of that nasty /mnt/DOS_*; and it seems to guess at the drive letter (so that /dev/hda1 is mounted under /mnt/win_c) The new Helix Gnome is in there (although I had already installed it under 7.0) And unfortunatly for you, it's enlightenment-0.16.3-11mdk Overall, I'd say it's a nice evolution of 7.0. Nothing too new, but just enhancements to current things. I have a HP 9200i (SCSI 8x/4x/32x; it's basically the SCSI twin of the 9100i) drive, and I've had no problems with it and Linux. Well, let me take that back. For some reason I can't burn .exe's while in Linux. It might be the burning software (gcombust) or it may be something else. But all the .exe's I've burned in Linux come up as "invalid applications" in Windows. I've got to vouch for Gnome 1.2; it's very very nice. I installed it Tuesday, and it's much better than my old verision of Gnome, the one that came with 6.1. And the installation was really slick, I liked it. You just go here: http://www.helixcode.com/desktop/instructions.php3?distribution=gognome&x=32&y=26 follow the directions, and then up comes a nice GUI installer. It might take a while to download all those packages if you have a 56K or slower connection though, so I wouldn't really suggest upgrading in that case. One of the things you talked about was desiging new tools. One thing that would be neat to have, but I'm not sure how exactly you'd do it, is a .tar.gz uninstaller. Have a program that keeps track of where all the files go when you do "make install" and then have the program delete those files if the user doesn't want the program anymore. Or on that line of thought, maybe a program that'll automatically install a .tar.gz file. I relieze not all .tar.gz's follow the same pattern, but about 95% of them it is "tar -xzvf the_file.tar.gz; cd the_file; ./configure; make; make install". And while you could put that in a shell script, many newbies don't know how to do that. Heck, you could combine that with the uninstalling suggestion I had above and make into one program. Of course, for those .tar.gz's that don't follow the pattern, I'm not sure how you'd find out if they follow it or not, and if they don't, then what? But I like hte idea of a program that untars and installs .tar.gz's automaticaly for you. I don't have M7.0 yet, but I like the idea of the different security zones. One of the main complaints I've heard on this mailing list is lack of desciption of what the different zones actually do. So tell the user what exactly is happening when you select a certain level. Or maybe, have like a checklist, where the user can pick and choose what exactly they want to do. That would be cool. Keep it simple (like 5 levels) for the avearage person, but let the expert pick and choose. And include some sample firewalls or something like that. Somethign that would be useful to the average Dial-up (or cable modem in my case) person, who doesn't need a lot of exceptions like for a FTP or web server, but just needs a good regular firewall. That way the user doesn't have to figure out all the ipchaining rules and stuff; which at the moment totally loses me everytime I try to read through the how-to. [newbie] CD Burning
I FINALLY got a replacement CD-RW today (the old one was defective) and so now I"m anxious to use it. However I don't know how exactly to get mp3's into audio tracks that you can play on a regular stero. I know you have to convert them, and then burn it on a CD-R disc, the only problem is the software. I checked out freshmeat.net to look for some stuff, but none of them had what I wanted. So is there any good GUI CD-Burning utlities that I should check out? Preferably something that converts the Mp3 and burns it all in one program. I did get a burner program to work though (gcombust), but I can't get a mp3 convertor to work for me, so a convertor alone would work too. That doesn't seem to be working for me. I hit to switch to a new terminal, and then I login. Then when I type "startx -- :2" it gives me a list of the options, which I figure is because I never really give it an option with the space between the "-" and ":". So, I then tried "startx --:2", but then that gives me this: -- Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again. When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send the full server output, not just the last messages Then it hangs, and I have to hit c to bring back the prompt. There is quite a performance difference between SCSI and IDE drives, it's just a matter of whether you'll be able to recognize it. If you copy lots of files back and forth, or deal with large amounts of data flowing through everyday, then you'll probally want SCSI. Or if you are a super power-user, and must have the absolute best, then you'd get SCSI. But for the average Joe, the price increase isnt' worth the performance increase for SCSI. And so long as your SCSI card is supported under Linux (you can check on Mandrakes webpage) then you should do just fine. First install Linux wherever you want. Don't worry about it being past the 1024 cylinder. BUt just make sure that during installation you make a boot disk. Then, after you finish installing, reboot and use that boot disk to get to Linux. [newbie] Upgrading packages
I'm having a bit off a problem upgrading/installing some rpm files. Gnapster stopped working for me for some odd reason, so I was trying to get some other Linux ports for Napster. I found Gnome-Napster but it said I needed gnome-libs 1.0.53 and I have 1.0.14. So I went over to rpmfind.net to get the updated version. But when I tried to install that, it said that "gnome-libs = 1.0.14 is needed by gnome-libs-devel-1.0.14-1mdk" so I can't upgrade. And then trying to upgrade gnome-libs-devel says "gnome-libs = 1.0.58 is needed by gnome-libs-devel-1.0.58-1mdk". So i can't upgrade gnome-libs-devel until I upgrade gnome-libs. And I can't upgrade gnome-libs because my old version of gnome-libs-devel needs the old version of gnome-libs. So I'm in a Catch 22. I was going to comment on this news too, I'm excited about it. Finally you can put Linux at the back of the drive with no worries at all. The 1024 limit also confused a lot of Newbies (including me) when they first heard about it, so now that won't be an issue anymore. Not really on topic here, but about half the computers in my Computer Science class got hit by Chernobyl yesterday; including mine. Most people probally got it from sharing the pirated programs that students had put on there. Fortunatly I didn't have anything real important on my computer, so they only big loss is reinstalling Windows. And since I used Linux to view all the disks I had brought home from school, my computer at home wasn't infected. Compiling from source: Every newbies nightmare. But here's how to make it better. First untar the .tar.gz file by typing "tar -xvzf the_tarred_file.tar.gz". This will create a new directory. Go into that new directory. Read the readme file in that directory, it should contain further and more exact instructions on how to install that particular program. But 95% of the time, the instructions will be the same. In that directory, type "./configure". This will check to make sure you have all the proper libraries installed. If you get an error in this step, take note of what your missing and look for it on rpmfind.net. Then install the missing file with "rpm -Uvh the_missing_file.rpm" as root. Once you get past the ./configure stage with no errors, type "make". This will compile the source, and might take a little while. Once make is done, "su" to root, and type "make install". Once it finishes that, the program is installed. 1. Mandrake supports DVD drives (so that they can function like a CD-ROM drive), but you have to use a seperate program to play DVD movies. And I don't think there is any DVD Software out for Linux, but I could be wrong. But if you want to play movies, check out www.opendvd.org for more info about the current Linux DVD situation. 2. I don't think kmail has a limit on messages per folder, I have 1,174 right now in the Newbie folder that comes from this list. Do you have a backup boot disk (it asked you to create one during installation)?
