It is not that simple in Postgres. When you install the system, there
is only one user created, normally 'postgres'. What you want to do is,
from root, to switch to user postgres (su - postgres) and then create a
new user for yourself. Good documentation can be found at

[newbie] To gmail users

2005-02-12 Thread Avi Schwartz
If you are a gmail user having problems with the gmail reply-to
settings, do the following:

1) Go to your Gmail settings
2) Select the other reply-to radio button (the one with the entry box)
3) Type into the reply-to entry box <> (in other words Less-then
followed by a Greater-then sign).

Important: If you leave the box empty it is not going to work. You have
to type <> in the box!

This should eliminate the reply-to header and mailing list replies will
now go to the list as they should.

'missing' is obvious, but what are the others (e.g. S.5T)?
I don't remember where I copied this from but it goes:
Verifying installed files vs. rpm:
rpm -v package_name
When verifying a package, RPM produces output only if there is a
verification failure. When a file fails verification, the format of the
output is a bit cryptic, but it packs all the information you need into
one line per file. Here is the format:

SM5DLUGT c

Where:
   *S is the file size.
   *M is the file's mode.
*5 is the MD5 checksum of the file.
*D is the file's major and minor numbers.
*L is the file's symbolic link contents.
*U is owner of the file.
   *G is the file's group.
*T is the modification time of the file.
*c appears only if the file is a configuration file. This is
handy for quickly identifying config files, as they are very likely to
change, and therefore, very unlikely to verify successfully.
   * is the file that failed verification. The complete path
is listed to make it easy to find.

It's unlikely that every file attribute will fail to verify, so each of
the eight attribute flags will only appear if there is a problem.
Otherwise, a "." will be printed in that flag's place.

way to find out about this? Is there a list of all the Alt-F2 names
of the programs installed on my computer?

Alt-F2 is just a KDE convenience so that you can run anything you can
run from the command line. There is no such thing as Alt-F2 names. If
you can run it from the command line, you can run it from Alt-F2.

Also, is there a way to go to let's say OOImpress directly?
'ooimpress' is not the right choice...

It is the correct choice for version 1.1.4. I don't know about 1.9.
You will have to find out how is it called in 1.9 by looking at your
installation.

A different problem... I did urpmi thunderbird, to find out that that
installed the 0.8 version. Is it normal that urpmi gives software that
is (a little) outdated?
It is not a problem, just a reality of the fast changing world of open
source. Once a distribution is released, the vendor (in this case
Mandrake) will not update the packages to the latest and greatest unless
it is part of the main distribution (i.e. not contributors, test, club,
etc.) and has a security issue that needs to be fixed. In some cases
the fixes will be back ported so you will not even get the latest
version until some future release of the distribution.

In some cases you have alternatives to the Mandrake packages. In the
case of Firefox, you can find the 1.0 release through the great
packaging job of Charles E. Edwards. Go to http://www.eslrahc.com/ for
more information.

or night without having to wait for the computer to boot and (2) because
I am running my own mail server.

2. Should I install some type of firewall for security reasons? I do

Yes. Linux is good and secure but it is not completely hacker proof
(nothing is).

If yes, what do you recommend?
Start with the firewall that ships with Mandrake and use the Mandrake
Control Center to turn it on and configure it.

3. Ditto for anti-virus? If yes, what do you recommend?
Viruses at this point are not a problem for Linux, but if you serve mail
to Windows machines or just want to be safe, you can use clamav. You
can install it via the mcc.

4. Is the anti-span feature built into KMail sufficient or should I
pick a second program. If yes, what do you recommend?

Stick with the kmail anti-spam feature and if you are not satisfied, you
can always look for something additional (like spamassassin).

Looking forward to both your answers and *reasons*.
BTW, you may want to turn off the reply-to setting. It is normally not

On the command line, the differences are minimal IMO, but there is a

Personally, it doesn't much matter to me because I work primarily

I thought dpkg was one of the things apt-get does that makes it
somewhat better.
For example, if you install postfix, it stops and asks you for the
main settings and then configures it as well
so its mostly ready to go as soon as its installed.

The first time I played with debian, I was suprised that the
installing packages were asking me config questions...
its pretty cool.
OK, now I understand and I agree on both items. While I never used
synaptic, I did use SuSE for few years and their installer (YAST) is
integrated which is much nicer in my opinion.

As for dpkg, yet this is nice indeed. Now I remember that it did this
for me as well, stop and ask for configuration settings during the
install. BTW, I remember that at least on some occasions, YAST did
this as well in SuSE so it may be something that can be added to the
RPMs, like a post-install configuration step.

What is the advantage apt-get has over urpm*? I used it only for a

lsmod will give you a list of modules loaded and rmmod is used to
remove a loaded module. I would also suggest that you find out why the

What you have to do is to go to Windows > Preferences > Java > Editor >

if it comes back with something like "a /bin/sh script text executable"

sh filename.bin

If it tells you something like "ELF 32-bit LSB executable" then change

Use this link to generate the correct list of mirrors. Don't add the

gives, as root, from the command line.

To get the list of files in all the mirrors updated:

urpmi.update -a

To update only the update source:

urpmi.update --update

To update your system only from the update source:

urpmi --update --auto-select

To update your system from all sources:

urpmi --auto-select

I never use urpmi with a proxy but the man page talks about the
following switches

   --proxy proxyhost[:port|1080]
Use specified HTTP proxy.
   --proxy-user user:password
Use specified user and password to use for proxy authentication.
Or try to use the following syntax in /etc/urpmi/proxy.cfg:

You need to get the latest Nvidia drivers from the Nvidia website and
run the installer. When you do it will tell you if it has an
interface
ready and available for the kernel. If it doesn't, then it will tell
you that as well, and at that point it will ask you about recompiling.
Run thru the questions and you should have some new Nvidia drivers
installed.

After that you naturally need to follow the directions listed in

/usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_kernel-2.4.22.26mdk-5328

Or whatever other /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_* directory was created.
These
directions will tell you what you need to do to the XF86Config-4 file.

If you get it working ok a report back telling about success would be
nice.

Made sure I had the Kernal sources loaded and tried the installer and
then I
get an error from the installer that it can't determine the NVIDIA
Kernal
level.
Now I am running 2.6.3-7 and the NVIDIA files are for 2.4
I expected to recompile for the 2.6 but it don't seem to get very far.
Where do I go from here?
Lets see if I can help. First of all, at least for 10.0 official there
are NVIDIA driver RPMs for kernel 2.6.3-7. You will need to install
NVIDIA_kernel-2.6.3.7md and NVIDIA_GLX.

If you don't have 10.0 official or you prefer to build and install
yourself, here is what I had to do to build and run the Nvidia module
under kernel 2.6.3-9:

1. Make sure you have the kernel sources installed.
2. Make sure you have a build link in the appropriate modules directory
pointing to your kernel source:

  First try:
  ls -l /lib/modules/`uname -r`
If you see a link called build pointing to the kernel source, go to
step 3. Otherwise create the link:

 ln -s /usr/src/linux /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build

3. Copy the configuration of the currently running kernel to
/usr/src/linux:

 Backup the current .config file:
 cp /usr/src/linux/.config /usr/src/linux/config.bak
Then copy the running kernel's config file:
 cp /boot/config /usr/src/linux/.config
4. Try to build the Nvidia modules.

[newbie] Should I build the NVIDIA module myself?

2004-04-28 Thread Avi Schwartz
Hi,

While Mandrake is releasing all these new kernels in order to fix
security issues I noticed that they are in no hurry to release the
matching NVIDIA modules. This leaves me in a bind. Either I wait
until Mandrake releases the NVIDIA modules (who knows when) and
continue running the current kernel version (which I assume is not a
good idea from security perspective) or I install the new version of
the kernel and download the NVIDIA code and build it for the new
kernel. What is the opinion of this group?

If I do decide to build the module myself, should I remove the current
NVIDIA_kernel-xx package first? I assume I don't since the module
is installed in the proper kernel module tree. What about NVIDIA_GLX?

BTW, it would be nice if Mandrake would release the NVIDIA modules
together with the new kernels, don't you think? They probably have now
some users swearing at Mandrake because their X environment stopped
working after updating the kernel...

Thanks,

We'll have to see exactly what it is that Isreal will do here. The news is
definitely encouraging.
I will try to help here by translating excerpts from an article that
currently appears on the online version of an Israeli daily:

"The Finance Ministry announced today that it suspends the agreement
with the software giant Microsoft for the purchase and upgrade of
software (mainly for personal computers) for the government ministries.
The reason for the decision is mainly monetary, but it also has to do
with the way Microsoft products are priced and the government's computer
infrastructure.

At the beginning of 2001, the government signed a 3 year agreement with
Microsoft which will come to an end at the end of the current year. The
agreement allowed the government to use Microsoft software for a yearly fee.

According to the Finance Ministry the agreement may have had a negative
impact for the selection of certain products due to the fact that the
agreement requires the purchase of packages of software. Also, the
recent cuts in the budget of the government ministries impacts the
ability to finance the agreement.

Another reason for the suspension of the agreement is the plan the
government has for a wide use of alternative software, mainly Sun's Open
Office.

The price of these software products is much lower then Microsoft's
software. It should also be noted that lately Sun Israel with the help
of IBM and others is investing much effort to make Open Office work
reasonably well in Hebrew, something that will allow the software to
compete with Microsoft's in the Israeli market.

There is also plan to move the government ministries to use Open Source
software. This means the wide use of the Linux OS and software running
under Linux."

I hope this clarifies the matter somewhat. Even though no mention is
made of Antitrust, it is still encouraging to see the government of
Israel thinking of using Linux to cut cost. Recently there have been
huge cuts in the government budget and when there is little money,
people start looking at Linux.

OK, I think I found what is my problem.

The problem is that msec doesn't seem to be setting the directory/file

Only in this case the script is setting the -c parameter on the call to

Is there a better way to call msec to set the permissions? Shouldn't
the file permissions checked and set on each invocation of msec by
default?

Unfortunately when I run msec it changes the permissions back to 1773.
Isn't perm.local supposed to allow me to override the default
settings? How do I achieve this?
Thanks,
Avi

I have gone some rounds against msec too...
It seems that level.local has to begin with the line
from mseclib import *
or else it won't save any changes. Take a look at
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/secure/smsec2.html for starters.

[newbie] msec ignores perm.local

2003-09-01 Thread Avi Schwartz
My machine currently uses level 4 security which sets the permissions
on /var/tmp to 1773, however I need to make it possible for "other" to
be able to read their files from this directory (i.e. mode 1777. so I
added to perm.local the following line

/var/tmproot.adm1777

and then went ahead and modified the permissions on the directory
manually to see what msec does:

chmod g+r /var/tmp

Unfortunately when I run msec it changes the permissions back to 1773.
Isn't perm.local supposed to allow me to override the default
settings? How do I achieve this?

Thanks,
Avi

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 9.1 and Apache

2003-08-14 Thread Avi Schwartz
I did not try to install Apache2 and PHP on mdk 9.1 yet but I can tell
you I had a very bizarre experience on two different SuSE 8.2 systems.
On one, the two installed beautifully and worked out of the box. On
another machine I could not get the this combination to work and I
ended up using Apache 1 instead. I have no explanation :-(

I am far from an expert on PHP and Apache. However, I can tell you I
could not get php to work with Apache 2. When I went back to Apache 1
it all worked great.

Re: [newbie] Program for joining files together

So I assume that the smaller files are complete AVI files and not
splits from a bigger file?
Then this is a problem. A quick look on google shows only Windows
programs that can do it.

Avi,

This doesn't really work. A big file is generated by joining the
smaller
ones together, but when I try to view the big file it stops at exactly
the point where the first small one ends.

Any other suggestions?

[newbie] Why doesn't msec set directory permissions properly?

2003-07-28 Thread Avi Schwartz
I asked this question on the newbie side but received no replies.
Maybe it is a question for the experts...

Because the machine in question will end being a server connected 24x7
to the Internet, I set its security level to higher (4). However, I
want to change the privileges for /usr/share/doc to be world browsable
and readable. I used drakeperm to set the directory permissions and
when I look at /etc/security/msec/perm.local I see the following line:

/usr/share/doc/adm.adm755

I then ran msec but when I checked the permissions on the directory I
still see:

drwxr-x--- 297 admadm

In /var/log/messages I do see that msec is reading the perm.local file.

Any idea why is msec ignoring my permissions?

Thanks,
Avi

Re: [newbie] Does mandrakeUpdate really work?

2003-07-28 Thread Avi Schwartz
Thank you everyone for your help regarding the update of the kernel.
It does make sense that the kernel should not be updated but rather be
installed as a new package.
What made me assume that the new kernel should show up as an update is
the following sentence from the advisory
(http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/advisories/advisory.php?name=MDKSA-
2003:066-2):

"To upgrade automatically, use MandrakeUpdate."

which is apparently wrong.

Avi
Because kernels must not be *upgraded*. They must be *installed*.
If you try to upgrade a kernel, it will destroy your system.
That's why Mandrake removed the opportunity to *upgrade* kernels
via the Control Center.
If you want the new kernel, do as follows :

Download the kernel-whatsoever.rpm to some directory of your
choice, for example /home/avi/downloads. Change into that
directory, su into root and then run :
urpmi kernel-*whatever*.rpm

This will install the new kernel. That done, edit your
/etc/lilo.conf to make the new kernel the default one.
You can do that from the Command Center under the Boot-option or
simply edit it by hand. Remember to run *lilo* (as root) when
you have saved the new /etc/lilo.conf.
Finally, re-boot and if everything is OK you can simly remove the
old kernel entries in /boot, although that's not necessary.

Have you upgraded from 9.0 to 9.1? If so the urpmi sources need fixing,
or they will still be looking at 9.0. ISTR this is what I saw before I
fixed them.

I believe it also depends on the mirror that you're updating from. Some
mirrors get updates several days later, so I'd wait a couple more days
and
try it again then ... or just change your mirror to something else :)

Have you run the sources update utility either in the graphical sources
manager, or by typing
urpmi.update update

in a console as root.

Even though packages are available, urpmi won't know about them until
you
refresh the package lists by the above methods.
