If you are a gmail user having problems with the gmail reply-to settings, do the following: 1) Go to your Gmail settings 2) Select the other reply-to radio button (the one with the entry box) 3) Type into the reply-to entry box <> (in other words Less-then followed by a Greater-then sign). Important: If you leave the box empty it is not going to work. You have to type <> in the box! I don't remember where I copied this from but it goes: Verifying installed files vs. rpm: rpm -v package_name When verifying a package, RPM produces output only if there is a verification failure. When a file fails verification, the format of the output is a bit cryptic, but it packs all the information you need into one line per file. Here is the format: SM5DLUGT c Where: *S is the file size. *M is the file's mode. *5 is the MD5 checksum of the file. *D is the file's major and minor numbers. *L is the file's symbolic link contents. *U is owner of the file. *G is the file's group. *T is the modification time of the file. *c appears only if the file is a configuration file. This is handy for quickly identifying config files, as they are very likely to change, and therefore, very unlikely to verify successfully. * is the file that failed verification. The complete path is listed to make it easy to find. It's unlikely that every file attribute will fail to verify, so each of the eight attribute flags will only appear if there is a problem. Otherwise, a "." will be printed in that flag's place. -- Avi Schwartz http://public.xdi.org/=avi.schwartz When you have robbed a man of everything, he is no longer in your power. Alt-F2 is just a KDE convenience so that you can run anything you can run from the command line. There is no such thing as Alt-F2 names. If you can run it from the command line, you can run it from Alt-F2. Also, is there a way to go to let's say OOImpress directly? 'ooimpress' is not the right choice... It is the correct choice for version 1.1.4. I don't know about 1.9. You will have to find out how is it called in 1.9 by looking at your installation. A different problem... I did urpmi thunderbird, to find out that that installed the 0.8 version. Is it normal that urpmi gives software that is (a little) outdated? It is not a problem, just a reality of the fast changing world of open source. Once a distribution is released, the vendor (in this case Mandrake) will not update the packages to the latest and greatest unless it is part of the main distribution (i.e. not contributors, test, club, etc.) and has a security issue that needs to be fixed. In some cases the fixes will be back ported so you will not even get the latest version until some future release of the distribution. In some cases you have alternatives to the Mandrake packages. In the case of Firefox, you can find the 1.0 release through the great packaging job of Charles E. Edwards. Go to http://www.eslrahc.com/ for more information. On the command line, the differences are minimal IMO, but there is a large group of people that prefer the gui frontend called synaptic. I am speaking for them here, but they prefer the integrated functionality as opposed to the simple approach taken by rpmdrake. Personally, it doesn't much matter to me because I work primarily from the command line now, but as they say, difernt strokes for difernt folks. I thought dpkg was one of the things apt-get does that makes it somewhat better. For example, if you install postfix, it stops and asks you for the main settings and then configures it as well so its mostly ready to go as soon as its installed. The first time I played with debian, I was suprised that the installing packages were asking me config questions... its pretty cool. OK, now I understand and I agree on both items. While I never used synaptic, I did use SuSE for few years and their installer (YAST) is integrated which is much nicer in my opinion. As for dpkg, yet this is nice indeed. Now I remember that it did this for me as well, stop and ask for configuration settings during the install. BTW, I remember that at least on some occasions, YAST did this as well in SuSE so it may be something that can be added to the RPMs, like a post-install configuration step. If it doesn't, then it will tell you that as well, and at that point it will ask you about recompiling. Run thru the questions and you should have some new Nvidia drivers installed. After that you naturally need to follow the directions listed in /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_kernel-2.4.22.26mdk-5328 Or whatever other /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_* directory was created. First of all, at least for 10.0 official there are NVIDIA driver RPMs for kernel 2.6.3-7. You will need to install NVIDIA_kernel-2.6.3.7md and NVIDIA_GLX. If you don't have 10.0 official or you prefer to build and install yourself, here is what I had to do to build and run the Nvidia module under kernel 2.6.3-9: 1. Make sure you have the kernel sources installed. 2. Make sure you have a build link in the appropriate modules directory pointing to your kernel source: First try: ls -l /lib/modules/`uname -r` If you see a link called build pointing to the kernel source, go to step 3. Otherwise create the link: ln -s /usr/src/linux /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build 3. Copy the configuration of the currently running kernel to /usr/src/linux: Backup the current .config file: cp /usr/src/linux/.config /usr/src/linux/config.bak Then copy the running kernel's config file: cp /boot/config /usr/src/linux/.config 4. [newbie] Should I build the NVIDIA module myself?
Hi, While Mandrake is releasing all these new kernels in order to fix security issues I noticed that they are in no hurry to release the matching NVIDIA modules. This leaves me in a bind. Either I wait until Mandrake releases the NVIDIA modules (who knows when) and continue running the current kernel version (which I assume is not a good idea from security perspective) or I install the new version of the kernel and download the NVIDIA code and build it for the new kernel. What is the opinion of this group? If I do decide to build the module myself, should I remove the current NVIDIA_kernel-xx package first? I assume I don't since the module is installed in the proper kernel module tree. What about NVIDIA_GLX? BTW, it would be nice if Mandrake would release the NVIDIA modules together with the new kernels, don't you think? They probably have now some users swearing at Mandrake because their X environment stopped working after updating the kernel... Thanks, Avi Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? The news is definitely encouraging. I will try to help here by translating excerpts from an article that currently appears on the online version of an Israeli daily: "The Finance Ministry announced today that it suspends the agreement with the software giant Microsoft for the purchase and upgrade of software (mainly for personal computers) for the government ministries. The reason for the decision is mainly monetary, but it also has to do with the way Microsoft products are priced and the government's computer infrastructure. At the beginning of 2001, the government signed a 3 year agreement with Microsoft which will come to an end at the end of the current year. The agreement allowed the government to use Microsoft software for a yearly fee. According to the Finance Ministry the agreement may have had a negative impact for the selection of certain products due to the fact that the agreement requires the purchase of packages of software. Also, the recent cuts in the budget of the government ministries impacts the ability to finance the agreement. Another reason for the suspension of the agreement is the plan the government has for a wide use of alternative software, mainly Sun's Open Office. The price of these software products is much lower then Microsoft's software. It should also be noted that lately Sun Israel with the help of IBM and others is investing much effort to make Open Office work reasonably well in Hebrew, something that will allow the software to compete with Microsoft's in the Israeli market. There is also plan to move the government ministries to use Open Source software. This means the wide use of the Linux OS and software running under Linux." I hope this clarifies the matter somewhat. Even though no mention is made of Antitrust, it is still encouraging to see the government of Israel thinking of using Linux to cut cost. Recently there have been huge cuts in the government budget and when there is little money, people start looking at Linux. Avi Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Avi Because kernels must not be *upgraded*. They must be *installed*. If you try to upgrade a kernel, it will destroy your system. That's why Mandrake removed the opportunity to *upgrade* kernels via the Control Center. If you want the new kernel, do as follows : Download the kernel-whatsoever.rpm to some directory of your choice, for example /home/avi/downloads. Change into that directory, su into root and then run : urpmi kernel-*whatever*.rpm This will install the new kernel. That done, edit your /etc/lilo.conf to make the new kernel the default one. You can do that from the Command Center under the Boot-option or simply edit it by hand. Remember to run *lilo* (as root) when you have saved the new /etc/lilo.conf. Why doesn't it tell me there is an update? Avi Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] Why doesn't msec set directory permissions properly?
I set my machine's security level to higher (4), however, I want to change the privileges for /usr/share/doc to be world browsable and readable. I used drakeperm to set the directory permissions and when I look at /etc/security/msec/perm.local I see the following line: /usr/share/doc/adm.adm755 I then run msec but when I check the permissions on the directory I still see: drwxr-x--- 297 admadm In /var/log/messages I do see that msec is reading the perm.local file. Any idea why is msec ignoring my permissions? Thanks, Avi Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
