[newbie] stat-ed

2000-09-16 Thread Barry Winch

Hi,
I am was running fine Mandrake 7.0 kernel 2.2.14-15mdk on a i586. I am using
SAMBA to provide access between Linux and a couple of windows machines. One
of the windows machines (98SE), has a habit of committing suicide at regular
intervals (Thanks Micro$oft). After I have resuscitated the windows machine,
and try to access it through midnight commander, I get a largered banner
that says :File PROXY exists but cannot be stat-ed: Input/output error.

If, from the command line, I cd PROXY, then do an ls, I get

smb_retry: signal failed, error -3
smb_retry: signal failed, error -3
ls:.:Input/output error

Any ideas how to re-establish the link without having to reboot linux??

TIA

Barry

[newbie] Portmapper failure

2000-09-11 Thread Barry Winch

Hi,
Up until this morning everything was running fine Mandrake 7.0 kernel
2.2.14-15mdk on a i586. When I rebooted everything went fine until the line
after "starting linuxconf". The system appeared to freeze, but some minutes
later the following message appeared: mount: RPC: Portmapper failure - RPC:
Timed out.

After a couple more minutes, the start continues as normal. Everthing
APPEARS to run OK. Any ideas what I need to do to get a clean start up
please

TIA
Barry

[newbie] tar help please

2000-06-04 Thread Barry Winch

Hi, I've tried looking at the tar man page, but still cant get any joy with
tar.

I have a directory called archive, with numerous subdirectories. I want to
save all these files as a single file called all_archive, while preserving
the dirctory structure and permissions, and then finally compress the whole
thing. Can some one show me the correct command please

Thanks

Barry

[newbie] Command Execution

2000-06-02 Thread Barry Winch

Can someone please explain the concept behind ./ in executing a command.

If I am in the directory where the programme resides and type the programme
name, I get a:
"bash: programme name: command not found" message

If, from the same directory I type ./programme name everything works as
advertised.

Thanks

Barry

Re: [newbie] FTP andf Telnet

2000-03-22 Thread Barry Winch

Thanks for the response folks, I stupidly assumed that the telnet server had
been installed we all know what assumed means right?

In answer to Oves question, I telnet in using both linux and w98 machines,
w98 works ok for the limited work I do through telnet.

Secondly, I uninstalled the BERO-ftpd and installed the wu-ftp, and it now
works.

Thanks for the quick responses, and sorry for the duplicate posting, seems
to be a six hour turn around on mail here sometimes!!

[newbie] FTP andf Telnet

2000-03-22 Thread Barry Winch

This has to be a case of missing the obvious!! I have installed Manfrake 6.1
(2.2.13-22mdk). I can FTP and TELNET OUT of the box, but I can't telnet in,
no connection is ever established I can't even "telnet 127.0.0.1", all I get
is :

Connected to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Escape character is '^]'
Connection closed by foreign host

If I FTP in from either the host, or anothr machine on the lan, I get all
the right prompts, but then always:

530 Login incorrect
Login Failed.

This occurs whether I try to log in as root, or any other user.

Any ideas, I know its something stupid I've forgotten to do, but I am
currently brain deas and can't think what it is

TIA

Barry
