[newbie] Changing Kernels in Mandrake 10
Hello, I have tried installing the 2.4 kernel using the control centre. When I check to see what software I have installed the 2.4 kernels is displayed, which indicates that it is installed right? If that is so then why can I not chose the 2.4 kernel when it boots up? And why does it always run the 2.6kernel? Or maybe a better question is how can I install and use the 2.4kernel? Thanks to all. [newbie] Installing Speedtouch USB
Hello, I am a complete newbie to Linux, having finally made the plunge from a lifetime of Windows I must admit Im utterly perplexed with how difficult it is to get my modem working. I would really appreciate some guidance for a complete bozo. I have downloaded the binary file from http://www.speedtouch.fr/support_fr.htm and have decompressed them. So my question is: How to install the files? I have 2 .eni files(KQD6P1.eni and KQD6P2.eni) on my desktop. There is no readme file to go with it so what happens now? Once I have installed these files. What do I do next? Thanks for any support. i had this too - go to the drak boot utility in your configuration menu and choose your own account from the gui. it should have an option for auto login, which is set to on by default. set that to off and log out - you should be ok then. that's the general gist anyway, it is from memory. the doco is at http://www.mandrakeclub.com/docs/9.2/en/Drakxtools-Guide.html/drakboot.html cheers ben --- Hoyt Bailey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I have myself in a pickle. The PPPoE session is established via your PC through the DSL modem which only establishes the ecnapsulation for whatever protocol your ISP (SBC) is using before sending your PPPoE request to the authenticating server. MODEM is an acronym for MODulate-DEModulate which translates teh signal into what is necessary for the devices to communicate. In the case of DSL, it's the DSL modem talking to the DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexer) over your phone line using frequencies over 8khz (reserved for voice). If you've configured your PPPoE connection in mandrake Network Setup, then you'll need to make sure that the authentication is taking place. Hope this helps. -- Ben Reeves "He who knows much about others is learned, but he who understands himself is more intelligent. In light of the bankruptcy proceedings, the sum will likely be much smaller than that when they actually pay it off. We make up a minute portion of the funding. If you refer to Mandrakesoft's web page about the company you will note rather large venture investors. These are undoubtably the people who installed the executives that got us in this mess... As far as I know those people are still shareholders. Yes this is an assumption. But Mandrake would have to have incurred significant debt to buy out these shareholders. What we know of the debt suggests it was more of contracts not share buybacks. I have no reason to doubt your honest intentions. > You could be right, if they are business investors. We really don't know > enough about this to make judgements. Well yes and no. If you make the assumption that we need Mandrakesoft then no it's not a waste of our money. My point was that we don't *NEED* Mandrakesoft. It may be desirable to have them around for reasons of selling the boxed sets, relationships with OEM, etc... But as far as the community having the distribution, Mandrakesoft's continued existence is not a prerequisite. As far as outside control. Mandrakesoft gave up control the instant they started taking VC money and started selling their stock on a public market. The company is in the hands of shareholders now (myself included). However, most of these shareholders are undoubtably not Free Software advocates. They are simply business people trying to make money on a market. Paying off the debts gets debtors off Mandrake's back. It will not get the shareholders off their backs. Unless they find money to buy back those shares, they'll never be free of that encumbrance as a company. Now the fact that they are public shouldn't necessarily be construed as negative. Free software is an unusual business model the world has never really dealt with before. It doesn't mean it can't work, but it does mean it might take some unusual business structures to make it work. The disadvantages of a public company is that shareholders are normally very nervous of unusual business structures. Ultimately, this fear will slow the companies moves down. The question is then, will they be able to move fast enough to survive in spite of this? This is a question to which I do not have the answer. Though we will all find out with time. -- Ben Reser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://ben.reser.org "America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. But being (at least > mentally) prepared for that will help. Thank you. This is along the lines of what I intended by my article. It was an effort to create some discussion in the community about our options. It's obviously achieved that effect. Unfortunately, shortly after it was published things changed drastically. The bankruptcy filing offers an alternative opportunity out of the financial situation Mandrakesoft is in. It was certainly one that I considered. However, the Mandrake Community could not take that step. I am as interested in the coming months what Mandrakesoft will do to deal with these challenges. The bankruptcy filing gives me some hope that they will be able to survive without spending millions of euros towards things that don't really benefit the community. But ultimately, what got us here was poor business management. No matter how much I like the product, I will not desperately try to save a dying company. If it survives great. But I will not be standing there doing CPR on it. Especially, not when there is an alternative, as I presented, for the community. We'll all just have to wait and see what happens over the next few months. -- Ben Reser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://ben.reser.org "America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. You assume that the solution in my mind to the a lack of value that I see in their product is to decrease price. Rather I think they should increase the value. If that means not releasing ISOs until after the boxed copies have been shipping for a while... then so be it. There are a variety of techniques Mandrake could use to increase the value of their boxed copies over the download edition. Most of which would mean giving less of their work away for free. I have mixed feelings about some of these changes. But I do think the value proposition for Mandrake's commercial offerings is weak. You assume incorrect that I'm an unexperienced entrepreneur. I'm well aware of the link between price and market perception. When I sold Universal Commerce, Inc. to Digital River in 1999 we had one of the more expensive transaction processing services. The business is still operating to this day, with roughly the same pricing and for a long time was the only profitable portion of their business... -- Ben Reser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://ben.reser.org "America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. [newbie] mouse stops pointing correctly
Hi all, I recently built a computer with a K6-2 500 Mhz processor, MVP4 chipset, shared memory graphics, chipset-integrated AGP, LM 8.0, and a weird persistant but infrequent mouse problem. Basically, the mouse stops pointing to the correct spot on the screen. What I mean is, when moved to a button, the mouse pointer hovers over the button, you click the mouse button, but the effect of the click is about an inch to the left in the x-axis. y-axis is ok. OK, the integrated AGP is one possible culprit. How do I determine what level of support Mandrake has for these integrated AGP graphics? What parameters might I try to change to eliminate the mouse problem? Is driving voltage tunable somewhere? I think power supply might be another possible culprit. Installing the K6 eliminated weird x-windows behaviour during boot-up, where the pixels appeared to scatter a bit, and fonts were fuzzy. I think the 145 W power supply may have been marginal for the P200 installed then, operating at 3.3 V. The K6 works at 2.2 V, and the problem is gone. The infrequent mouse-drunkeness persists though. Suggestions? TIA, Ben Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

The call-waiting part saves you having to get a second phone line for the modem. It works transparently in linux or windows--the modem rings when you get a call, you can answer and talk briefly, or hang up and keep surfing. The only difficulty I've had is having to put a setserial line in rc.local to configure the irq and i/o port. Actiontec's website describes how to do that. Re: [newbie] Getting closer to a working modem
Admin, Getting a modem to work in Linux can be a pain. I have an internal Actiontec real modem, and whenever I switch it around from one computer to another, I have to follow this basic sequence: Plug in, boot up In a terminal: cat /proc/pci Examine for the modem, noting the first I/O address and IRQ In a terminal: setserial /dev/ttyS3 port 0x ( determined from cat /proc/pci) In a terminal: setserial /dev/ttyS3 irq ?? (?? determined from cat /proc/pci) In a terminal: setserial /dev/ttyS3 uart 16550A Then I can connect using Internet Dialer in the menu under Networking, Remote Access. In my case I use the serial port "ttyS3" not "modem" to connect. Internet Dialer is KPPP. Why KPPP is called Internet Dialer in the menu is a mystery to me. In one case, using a beta Mandrake 8, I also had to manually "modprobe ppp_async" to get the ppp modules loaded. For all modems, those modules have to be there for a ppp connection to work. Applying some of this to your situation may be helpful. What I don't know about is the kernel modules you seem to need to operate your modem. That seems pretty unusual, unless 3Com means the ppp modules (modprobe ppp_async actually loads several ppp modules). Hi all, I recently reinstalled Mandrake 8 on an old computer. After installing staroffice in the user home directory, I ran staroffice, but instead of starting it ran a repair program, telling me I needed sofficerc in ~/office52/user/sofficerc. Well, sofficerc is there alright, but staroffice can't see it or open it or something. I can't run staroffice, and I think it's the high security I set, but I don't know how to troubleshoot this. I had and still have this same problem, I do get it installed but have to manualy install the bad packages. It continues when I press go on. It is different packages everytime. I checked the bios and everything was fine. I have been told it is the CD or CD-Rom being bad that causes this. I know that can't be it cause this happens with nothing else and I have a brand new CD-RW that it happens on also. I can install 7.1 , RedHat and Win98SE with no probs. I also have a cheapbytes 7.2 that does this also and the downloaded 7.2 iso's that I burned do the same. I am convinced it is not my hardware or software. Although many would disagree with me.
Re: [newbie] MODEM Com port?
Actually, Ed, I had much the same problem. USR's technical support(including web site) was about as helpful as sticking my face in a meat grinder. That's a gripe for another time, however. While he could disable PnP in his BIOS it could affect the modem's operation in windows. I was directed to the following information by another member of this list, as a matter of fact. You need to tag this onto the end of one of your startup scripts: exec setserial /dev/ttyS4 irq ? port ? ^fourport ^auto_irq skip_test autoconfig spd_vhi You will need to replace the first question mark with the IRQ that the device is using. You can either do this by looking for the device's information in /proc/pci or, if you're not quite on your penguin feet yet, in the windows device manager. The port setting(second question mark) I'd suggest you find in the /proc/pci file. (Might try "grep -A 5 USR" if you don't feel like digging through the whole file. If your kernel doesn't recognize the brand of the modem it may not work, though.) Once you have that information in the startup script you'll want to(as root) go into the /dev/ directory and do the following rm -f modem ln -s /dev/ttyS4 /dev/modem Then you can use the device /dev/modem in any dialer from then on. Hope this works for you. On the same irq 9 I have several PCI devices: pcmcia scsi, USB, sound and modem, which all seems to work. -- From: Ron Zdrojkowski <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: re: 3Com 3CP5610 modem Regarding the 3Com 3CP5610 modem and Linux This is what worked for me on a Gateway GP6. I don't have much experience with Linux or x86 PCs so I don't know if this will work for you. After installing the modem card and starting up the system, Windows took over and "installed" the card. I assume it stores some parameters in the NVRAM used by the BIOS. I tried a lot of things to force interrupt values and ioport values through Windows and ended up wiping out my Windows setup to the point where I had some difficulty getting it to boot up in any system. Once I got over that problem, I found a way to avoid Windows completely after the initial sort of "plug and play" setup. The process turns out to be pretty simple. Boot up in Linux after the card has been installed and the Windows initialization has occured. In a terminal window, type cat /proc/pci Scroll down until you find the data for the serial controller. Mine looked like: Bus 0, device 15, function 0: Serial controller: Unknown vendor Unknown device (rev 1). Vendor id=12b9. Device id=1008. Medium devsel. IRQ 10. I/O at 0x1890 [0x1891]. Make a note of the values for IRQ and I/O port. In my case they were 10 and 0x1890 respectively. Then in the terminal window type setserial /dev/ttyS1 irq 10 port 0x1890 autoconfig where you use the correct values of irq and port for your system as obtained from the "cat /proc/pci" output. Then, you need to create the symbolic link between /dev/modem and /dev/ttyS1 with the ln command. Once that is done, you should be able to access the modem using minicom. If that works, and all of your PPP stuff is set up OK you should be able to log onto the internet. I don't think it really matters which COM port Windows uses for the modem. At this point you will need to use the setserial command each time you reboot your machine. To make it automatic, enter the setserial command at the end or your rc.local file so that it is executed automatically each time you reboot. The only problem I had after doing this occured after I installed a new SCSI controller card into the GP6. Windows installed the card but later, when I went to use the modem in Linux, it didn't work. What happened was, Windows changed the irq and port settings for the modem card. The original values for the modem had now been assigned to the SCSI card and the modem had two new values. Changing those values in the setserial command to the new ones found with "cat /proc/pci" put everything right again. It's been working for several months with no problems. Several others have used this procedure successfully. I don't know if anyone who has tried it has failed. Good luck. -- From: Ulo Mets <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: 3com 5610/2977 I just thought I should share my slightly different experience from Mr. Pedersen's. Re: [newbie] ppp error 15
I realize that this thread seemingly died out a bit ago, but my busy shedule has kept me from my reading regimign. Please forgive my tardiness on the thread. I'm afraid that I may not offer much direct help on the original subject but perhaps I can shed some light on the subjects which did spawn from it. Mr Tharp, if you are interested I can have an Earthlink help desk tech contact you at your convience to work on the problem. If you would like to discuss a time or the details of that please contact me at my personal e-mail address. Tech support calling you, how's that for no hold time, eh? On to the subject, though. Earthlink uses rented "POP numbers" from companies such as uu.net and alter.net so that they can provide service to the number of places that they do. While doing this allows them to be "The number one provider of the real internet" it also means that there is no mainline when it comes to connecting to them. If you have ever wondered why the ELN/ is required before your user name or had to connect with another ISP(Such as MSN) and entered your full e-mail address, rented POP numbers are the culprit. (If you're familiar with any of this then please skip the following ramble) Multiple providers rent the same number. That number directs the user to an authorization server which reads their provider and then sends them to the appropriate authorization server for that provider(As is my best understanding, anyway. If am wrong please correct me.) This is why you will get different results using various methods of connecting in different areas. Carrol, is it possible that by changing the type of authentication(specifically since CHAP is a more secure protocol than PAP) that you were sent to a different auth server, one that supported CHAP, and from there to a faster bank? This is pure speculation, does anybody have any ideas on this subject? I'm afraid that I do agree with Tom, in the sense that my pioneer side tends to be drawn away from large corperations like that which Earthlink has turned into. However, they do provide a good service for people graduating from AOL. Their technical support, in most cases I have dealt with them, is excellent. While they have their share of "Tier 1" techs, the general work bank is very good. I apologize again for my drift from the subject and for my painfuly long post. Once again, Mr. Tharp, if you would like to contact me I can arrange a good time for one of the help desk's linux savvy techs to call you. You might also want to peruse through http://help.earthlink.net which is an outstanding knowledge base. You can check network status, the load on your local pop number(I believe) and a list of other things. - Ben Sauls [EMAIL PROTECTED] "We give up our dreams for what we call 'wisdom.' In the standard configuration it sends all reports to /var/log/messages. [newbie] Video resolution oddities
I installed Mandrake 7.1 (my first Linux) on Monday morning. Since then, I've been trying to get my display resolution down to 800x600. My video card, a 32M ATI Rage Fury Pro ("detected as Rage 128 (generic)"), is capable of much more than my 15" monitor can comfortably display, and X defaulted to a painfully high resolution. Selecting 800x600 (at any color depth) resulted in a 1024x768 size display--too small to see comfortably--and 640x480 is BIG. Also, testing the newly selected video mode invariably caused the display to become ridiculously scrambled and impossible to use; I had to restart X to see the results of any changes. Ctrl+Alt+"-" and "+" allowed some flexibility, but not a satisfactory answer. Finally, I tried setting it to 1024x768, which lo and behold gave me a perfectly-sized 800x600 screen. I should have thought of that days ago. =) Is this little switch problem common to the 7.1 distro? Also, does anyone have any tips on configuring my particular video card in Linux? I'm having enormous fun setting up and learning Linux. I could get it done a lot faster if I didn't have to keep going to work and sleeping and such, though. B.
[newbie] Bunch o Questions (MDK 7.1)
Alright, most of this has probably already been pulverised into the ground, but I'll ask anyway. Trying to install Mandrake 7.1 on a Unisys Aquanta HR/6 server. It's a 6 processor Pentium Pro 200 machine, currently with 2gb of RAM. Needless to say, the installs don't go too well. Originally the machine had a AMI Megaraid controller, but I thought that Mandrake didn't really like it (since my installs were failing) so I swapped that out in favor of an Adaptec 2940. Didn't make a bit of difference. Here's what happens: I'll go through the install, make my partitions, etc. It will copy files happily. Then it asks for the supplemental CD (or whatever it calls that 2nd CD), either it will copy files off that, or bitch at me and say it can't work with the CD. I know both CDs are fine - Mandrake installed like a champ on my laptop. Sometimes I can get it to finish the install, but then - if I started out with partitions on the drive before I started the install - I'll get errors that LILO can't install, divide by zero errors, or whatnot. If there are no partitions on the machine when I install, the install will go fine, but when I go to boot, it won't mount the root file system and hangs with a kernel panic. Any ideas? -ben ben ruset : [EMAIL PROTECTED] : www.stormrage.net

The first time I boot into Windows after I installed Linux, every time afterwards I can no longer access Linux. It boots up to the "Checking File System" and it freezes. Do you know why this might be happening? I have used Linux for about three months, but don't feel quite comfortable enough yet to have it as my only OS. [newbie] Qt
Im running Mandrake 7.0, with Blackbox/KDE as my window manager. I want to install Blackbox Tools. To do this i have to edit the Makefile and tell it where to find Qt, the only problem is i dont know where the hell Qt is. I know it's on there because i chose everything on install. Please could someone tell me where it is or how to find it. Thanx in advance :-) Ben Donahue [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[newbie] Install Guide
While attempting to install Mandrake 7.0 (in Recommended mode) and at the Setup filesystems section, the instructions tell me that normally I won't have anything to do. I only had a Windows partition. I did have to do something. Auto Allocate seemed the most logical option to select. The other option that I wanted was to gracefully back out of the whole install program and come back another day when I felt more comfortable about not having anything to do in Recommended mode. Nothing short of powering off the computer, would allow me to back out of the install program. That worked, so I returned to the installation and chose Auto-Allocate. I think I was questioned about the swap space and then there were other questions and suddenly there was more to do than simply click on Auto-Allocate and I wished I wasn't there anymore. How to get out of this nightmare ctl-alt-delete...escapeqctl Cfinally, turned it off and I was out Turned it back on and learned that I had erased the entire disk surface. About three hours to reinstall Windows 98. Now, I am so install "shy", that I can't bear to make a choice of doing something when I get to Setup filesystems, when I am told that normally I won't have anything to do. Please supplement the useless instructions about not having anything to do, and advise the next thing to do when in Recommended mode and am installing not upgrading. Also, is there a graceful exit from the install program Thanks

Re: [newbie] X-server
If your using 6.0 you can use the XBF server. I believe it is located in the /apps folder on the cd. Just follow the instructions in the readme file. Version 6.1 has support built in. It has several different i740 cards listed, as well as a generic agp and pci i740. Re: [newbie] Opera for Linux -- it's alive!
Here is the post from Helmar Rudolph, Opera's marketing guy; you have been waiting patiently for news from the various fronts, particularly the Mac, OS/2, Amiga and Linux versions. Here is a brief update. More info will follow later, and will be posted on both the respective newsgroups as well as the website. MacOS - The initial team did not perform to expectations. They are out. We are currently busy shifting the project to another team, which will delay things a bit, but nevertheless, our commitment to a MacOS version is there. Please don't shout and scream -- it won't help anyway -- just send us some positive energy that we get this on track this time 'round. Amiga - According to the head of the Amiga development team, that project has been put on hold because the entire Amiga market seems to have collapsed. Mags have gone out of business, no new information about the future is forthcoming, and sales are next to dead. They are now waiting for the Cologne Fair to see if it's worth continuing with the project of stopping it altogether. OS/2 I have no news about the status at all. I spoke to the Head of Development, who was on his way out of the office, but he gave me his new email address -- which bounced. Looking back at my progress mails, he said they'd done 75% of the work, and that was in March. Then they stumbled across the Resource files which they started converting manually or even rewriting. That was my latest update from many months ago. Their deadline is coming closer, so it's either make or break. More detailed news hopefully a little later -- when I get an email address that actually works. Linux - The MacOS and the Linux programmers have been working together, and they both failed. As with the MacOS project, the Linux project is also being shifted as we speak. Again, a version will be released (to the best of my knowledge of today ;)), but expect delays.
Re: [newbie] alternative browser?
Opera has "let go" of it's linux and mac porting teams, and are in the process of looking for others. Opera users in Windows, is this your experience so far? I would venture to guess the first group that comes out with a decent alternative to Netscape will garner quite a bit of support from the linux community. Until then we can all enjoy the 4500 mp3 players we have to choose from. Ben

I'm trying to install some CPAN bundles and keep getting this error; Can't locat stdarg.ph in @INC (did you run h2ph?) After doing some searching, I found a Red Hat errata about this, but the solution offered cd 'usr/bin/gcc --print-file-name include' /usr/bin/h2ph *.h does not work. Re: [newbie] Changing the default X windows color depth.
The alias solution listed below is one way, or you can edit your xf86config file. Open the config file ( mine is in /etc/ your mileage may vary..i have another in /etc/X11/ , but I'm using an xbf server, so check to make sure you are editing the correct one ) Find the *screen* section (towards the bottom of the file )and between the Monitor line and subsection line insert DefaultColorDepth 16 (if you want to default to 16 colors) This is from memory, so you may wish to have a look at an example before editing yours. I personally think the startx alias is a more elegant and flexible solution, but if your default runlevel is 5, I don't think that would work. Also run the vi tutorial, so if it doesn't work, you can fix it without having to reinstall :) Ben - Original Message - From: John Aldrich <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Wayne Boaz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, August 18, 1999 3:13 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] Changing the default X windows color depth. > On Wed, 18 Aug 1999, you wrote: > > Can anyone tell me how to change the default startup color depth from 8bpp > > to 16bpp? > > > Should be able to do it with "startx -- -bpp 16" Does this > not work for you? > > > > Is there an init file I can edit to add the '-- -bpp 16' settings to? It seems most of the documentation that is presented during the install was tacked on as an afterthought, and offers very little help to the new linux user. < / end rant > Ben - Original Message - From: Bob Schmidt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, July 31, 1999 2:15 AM Subject: RE: [newbie] compiler > Hi, > > I installed that, but it came back and said makeinfo missing (can't find that > anywhere) and compiler can't make execuatable > > Thanks, > Bob > > On Fri, 30 Jul 1999, you wrote: > > Make sure the pgcc package is installed.
Re: [newbie] Slow bandwith
In kppp check your connection speed. Setup -> Device -> Connection Speed Try setting it to 115200 and see if that helps. > mdk6.0 kppp says i am connecting @ 38400 but whenever i pull up a site, > ftp, download, etc., the maximum i pull is between 300- 600 bytes. under > windows i average between 2-3k.
