Steven,

Look for LinuxNeighborhood on the Net. It somehow appears to be similar to Net Neigh
of Windows. However you'll need samba running and the samba clients installed. I'll
search my backups and see whether I have a copy for you.

Hi Kit,

I am also interested in getting to Internet in a less expensive way. I got your mail

Description : Unable to connect to origin Web server.

Can you make the access possible to me. I need to d/ld the software you referred to as

Re: [newbie] Help!!!Leonardo!!!Brasil!!!

2000-01-29 Thread Bernardo Rodrigues

Hi Leonardo,

Have you tried installing Mandrake in Portuguese, this could possibly be an easier way
of sorting out your problem. For the StarOffice part , look under the non-kde
applications item of your K-Menu you should be able to find an icon for StarOffice. If
you do not have one then after you've installed StarOffice you should have restarted
kde and this is done in one of the items of your K-Menu ( the little K that you see in
the far- bottom left of your screen). Also StarOffice does not need to be installed as
root . If you've created yourself a user account you should be able to install
StarOffice easily with no need of root's intervention. Please feel free to email me
personally if you need any help in Portuguese.

Hope this helps.

Have you tried gFtp yet? If not give it a try. It is located under the non-kde item of
your K-Menu. Look for the item Internet under Gnome, you will find it there. It is
similar to the one you've used under Windows with more features.
If you haven't got it try and find from your Mandrake CD. Also do a search at
http://www.linuxberg.org you'll find lots of software there.

Hope this helps

I am trying to install a Combinatorics package ( Discreta ) on my Mandrake 6.1 box

in systems possessing Motif libraries ( which I believe Mandrake GPL does not have
since Motif is a commercial software). I wonder if Mandrake has Lesstif libraries (
which I believe to be Motif's version for Linux - I stand for a correction here) . If
not where can I get these libraries. Also, are there any rpm version available on the

I am already missing the Xterms. Where did the console go to? What
about the xterm. I haven't been able to acess the comand line driven
environment. Unless I use the ones provided by Gnome. Is this a new
feature in 6.1.
I have been noticing a strange behaviour of the X-windows since the
install of Helios. Under Venus I was able to have the X-windows all the
time startx command was issued. Now it is a kind of sometimes( it works
and fails every now and then) situation. Often after startx I get a
black screen with a big white enlightened rectangle which moves any time
I move the mouse. My video card is an SiS Pro AGP 3D with 8MB on board.
I have been using programmed clock for it and it worked for the last 6
months since Mandrake 5.3 to Mandrake 6.0 with no hassles). What could
be wrong?

I've been wondering if any of the Mandrake Gurus could write a

since there has been a high flow of e-mails going around.
1. How to switch from Kde to other Window Managers.
2. How to upgrade/compile the kernel.
3. How to access a Windows drive.

The final result can be possibly incorporated into the next Mandrake
manual as a FAQ or even posted in the digest and then refer everybody
with this kind of question to a repository of mails ( I heard somebody
mentioning that he was willing to archive all the mails, so this would
be an idea for a beginning).
Also, allow me please a remark. Since there has been this demand from
users can Mandrake in the next edition not provide Kde with the option
of switching to other Window Mangers, something similar to that of
Fwvm2 and AfterStep or WindowMaker?
I believe that this could make Mandrake more and more attractive and
popular.
If at all possible, please the Gurus should pay attention on these and
possibly other related things, at the end of the day it is all in the
interest of the Linux community and we will all benefit from the
possible innovations,

Thanks in advance for the minute taken by reading this.
I wish all of you a wonderful Easter vacation.

Re: [newbie] Before I Start:

1999-03-08 Thread Bernardo Rodrigues

Hi there,

I've had a situation similar to yours. Just recently I had a single
hard drive and used to have Win98 on it. Afterwards I decided should
have another hard drive for Linux. I believe that you've already done
a big step which is the choice of the Linux distribution that you are
wanting to install ( which is Mandrake 5.3).
I am assuming that you are going to have two independent hard drives
installed in your machine. And also that both Hard drives are IDE ( I
have not tried SCSI drives). And that you're going to access them in
LBA mode. ( If you don't know how to do this, I strongly advise you to
find somebody with the expertise to install the Hard drives and define
which becomes the master and which the slave).

Bearing in mind that you've listened to my advise then the next step
is to gather information on how to have a dual boot system, this can
be done by browsing the Mandrake manual (see
http://www.linux-mandrake.com and look for the doc section of that
home page this will take you there).
After reading that you'll need to decided what type of installation
you are going to do :
Assuming that your computer allows you to boot from your CD-ROM then
there is more or less nothing to fear. Go to the BIOS setup ( once
your computer is started will read the memory and startup PNP cards,
right after this press the delete key on your Keyboard and this will
take you there) and change the boot sequence ( tell your computer to
boot from the CD-ROM) and save the settings and exit ( read the BIOS
setup carefully and do not perform any other change if you're not
familiar with this stuff).
Once you've exited your computer will restart and start the booting
from the CD-ROM, from there you should follow the instructions in the
screen. However please read the Getting started manual for
installation ( the one that I've just referred to previously).
The second possibility is that your computer does not boot from the
CD-ROM. In this case you'll need to have four floppy disks ready (
format them) for the following operation.
1. Create a boot disk ( this can be done using your Win95/98 system
whichever the case). Place your Mandrake CD in the CD-ROM and look for
the subdirectories DOSUTILITIES and IMAGES. In the DOSUTILITIES
you'll need the rawrite program which will allow you to create the
disks. ( I do not have the entire procedure at my fingertips right
now, but I can email them to you if you want).
2. Create a Supplemental disk

3. Create a rescue disk.

After you've done this then you use the boot disk to start the
installation. You should be able to find a set of options of install.
Choose install from the CD-ROM and then from there on things will
follow their way. ( I am assuming you've read the Installation manual
that I've just referred to).

If every thing is done the way I've suggested then do not worry about
harming your Windows System ( there is a program called LILO = Linux
Loader, this will take care of the dual booting). But I think is
better for the moment that you install your Linux system in the
primary IDE drive ( if you're having an IDE drive) and LILO will be
installed in there and Linux will your default OS. Whenever your
computer boots up you'll have the option to boot whichever you
choose, if after a certain delay you do not define which the system
will boot to Linux since you've decided it to be the default. Later
when you feel more comfortable with Linux then you can configure LILO
and change to DOS as the default if you ever like to do so.

PS: The 4th disk is for LILO. You will only need this almost at the
end of the installation.

I hope this help. Let me know, privately if you've got any problem, so
that we can discuss.

Cheers

Bernardo

Hi Mauro,

You're a star. I've tried all the suggestions that you've sent to me
and all of them work just fine.
I can get many colors and no longer have the darkish background. Also
no problems with the refresh rate and the resolution. I went as far as
1280x1024 and no complains whatsoever. KDE is cool I just don't like
the idea of too many icons on my desktop.
However there seems to be a small problem wit the task bar, it slides
all the time ( form left to right and viceversa), I had some fun with
it but now it is a bit annoying. How do I fix this?
I shall probably submit something on the configuration of the sound,
but I am yet to try by myself and see whether I can get the beast to
work. I get absolutely no sound from any audio CD. I am reading the
notes and will see what to do. By the way how do I mount the floppy
driver and the CD-ROM?

Thanks for you dedicated patience.

All the best to you.

Hi All,

Thanks for the help with the installation of Mandrake 5.3. The
installation went smooth and nicely, the only trouble at the moment is
to configure the Xwindows. I am having a 15" Tatung monitor with max
res 1024*768 and a refresh rate in the range of 50-70 Hz and a max
24 bit of color depth. My video card is a SiS 6326 pro AGP.
I've tried xf86config and XFConfigurator, but with no success so far.
All I get is a dark background with Kde, and the mouse pointer stays
flickering on the top right corner of the screen . I have no idea of
what to do as to bring it in a sort of taskbar ( excuse the windows
terminology) in the bottom of the screen.

Any pointers to a solution are welcome.

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

I've got a burnt CD of Mandrake 5.3 and I am going to install the
software as soon as I get home. I've been reading the installation
procedures but need some more information.
I've gote two IDE HDD one of which I defined as primary master (here
is where I want to put Man 5.3 and Lilo) and a secondary master (here
I've got the Win stuff, do not blame me all belongs to my better half)
.

Question 1: How I am supposed to install Man 5.3 using the CD, chances
are that I'll go to Win first and certainly from there I cannot read
my primary HDD. How do I do this?
Question 2 : I've got RH 5.2 running in the 1st HDD, with the dual
booting options working fine, but I still prefer to have Mandrake
5.3, should I uninstall RH 5.2 first or just perform an Installation
of Mandrake on top of RH 5.2 and then do the Lilo configuration and
the other steps?
Question3 : If question 2 has a positive answer how do I uninstall RH
5.2?

In the hope of some light.
Thanks

[newbie] From RH 5.2 to Mandrake

1999-02-16 Thread Bernardo Rodrigues

Dear All,

I've been running Redhat 5.2 for quite a while now. But a friend just
introduced me to the Linux Mandrake and its recent release 5.3. I
wonder how I can migrate from Redhat 5.2 to Mandrake 5.3. Is is true
that I can install Mandrake 5.3 on top of Redhat 5.2?
I am currently using Lilo to boot to my other IDE drive where the
Windows stuff (secondary master) is kept. Will these settings that I
had made be preserved ? If it is not possible to install Mandrake
over Apollo, should I perform a clean installation of Festen (Mandrake
5.3), if so can anybody provide me with a thorough outline of the step
by step procedure?
If I have to perform a clean installation, will that mean getting rid
of RH 5.2 and all its components. How do I uninstall RH 5.2 then?

Thanks

Bernardo
