[newbie] Freecell Help?

2004-12-16 Thread Bob Read
On a box running LM 9.1 (updated from 9.0 a year or so ago),
I have been playing freecell at random moments from time to
time, and got to a score of 2330. The next game I played,
I tried to check the score after winning, and found that
the Line containing "Game Setting Help" is missing.
I tried ctlG, ctlS & ctlH, and they don't work either. so
I can no longer check the score. Logging on as another user,
the problem is not there, so the problem is only for me.
If anyone knows how to get that function back and rescue the
score, I would greatly appreciate the information.
Much thanks,
Bob.

Re: [newbie] can not connect to the internet

2004-06-08 Thread Bob Marly
Well there is your problem. The Ethernet is not coming up. If eth0 is not
listed when you do ifconfig, then it means the driver has not loaded.
Do you see the ethernet listed in the
MandrakeControlCentre>>HardwareHardware
list?
What driver does it use? What is your hardware?
Here is all the information it listed:
vendor: Realtek
Bus: PCI Bus identification: 10ec:8139:1462:577c
Location on the bus: 1:c:0
Description: RTL-8139
Module: 8139too
media class: network internet
It is possible that a BIOS problem could be preventing the driver loading.
The
first step in resolving BIOS issues is in
MandrakeControlCentre>Boot>BootLoader Uncheck the 'Enable ACPI' box and
check
the 'Force noAPIC' box Click Next>Finish, then reboot.
Neither enabled nor disable were checked, so I checked noAPIC and saved all
of that.

Do you have more than 1 network interface?
I have only one nic.
Take a look at /etc/sysconfig/network
You should have the line
GATEWAYDEV=eth0(assuming you connect via eth0)
All it sais is "networking=yes"
Also open a terminal enter 'su' (without quotes) to become root user, enter
'ifconfig'
It only lists loopback interface information. It sais nothing about eth0
I noticed two more things this bootup that may be helpful.:
During bootup: "interface eth0: failed"
At the mandrake control center: It showed eth0 near bottom, but at the top
it said lan. I configured it for cable. I ran the wizard again and told it
I'm on cable, but it never applied. It just hung for a long time, and then
I closed it.

I'm running no firewall.

[newbie] KPACKAGE , remote host ?... and GNORPM too.

2003-09-22 Thread Bob

Hi,

What's the format for a host URL in Kpack's config setup. I
tried both the "Use remote host" option (which disables all
other package formats except DEBIAN) and under the RPM-locations
button. Either I get a ROOT LOGIN or error popup from the remote
or everything goes well but nothing happens: Kpack doesn't seem
to list any extra RPM's from the host and not even a (recursive

Any solutions and what are good mirror URLs ?

I also have a remote host problem with GNORPM. Here you can
provide an URL but it seems to add
"resources/RDF/fullindex.rdf.gz" to the end (this is apparently
hardwired in GNORPM, I checked it in a hexeditor) and this

Anne,

I have to second what you say. I just bought and installed a HP Deskjet 3325
on my Debian Woody system.

No drivers for it in the Woody debs so I just downloaded the open source
drivers tarball from sourceforge, compiled and installed the driver.

Then installed the printer using cups without any problem at all.

This printer cost me all of $AUD 49-00 which is around $USD 30-00 this week.

HP IMO support OSS so I believe we OSS users s/be supporting them.

A further advantage for HP, along with Lexmark, is that they use oil based
inks which makes for better smear resistance off the printer.

My 2 bits.

Hello Tobi,

The difficulty I'm having now may be the same problem you're having.

Mandrake 9.1 PowerPack CDs installed flawlessly on a Maxtor hard drive.

I never got them to install on a Western Digital 6.4GB drive I bought
a few years ago.

The Maxtor was a bad drive and it's been sent back for
repair/replacment. So at this time I can't confirm that I've damaged
the Install 1 CD from the PowerPack, or if it is indeed the older
Western Digital drive that is causing the problems. I used the
Western Digital utilities to confirm that the WD drive is working
properly.
Hi The Other,

Did you try "Writing All Zeros" to the WD drive from WD Utilities?

The only time I have had a problem with a WD drive is when I let
Partition Magic
"correct" what it said was an error in a partition set up by Linux.
After that, the
only way I could get the drive to function properly was "Write All Zeros."
That was about two years ago, and that drive is still running fine now.

I'm currently using about fifteen WD drives (and one Maxtor). All are
running
well on Linux, FreeBSD, and one even has Win98 too, in case I have to run
something in that. I don't let the Windows unit access the Internet

"urpmi.update" is what you need.
Just entering that'll give a help message with all the options.

If you just want to just add the update_source from one of the mirrors: find
one close to you and add using "urpmi.addmedia" or the softwaretool in MCC
to
add the it.
"urpmi.addmedia update_source ftp:/// with
../base/hdlist.cz" (without the quotes)

After that use:

urpmi.update -a && urpmi  --auto-select --auto --update

Good Luck,
HarM

[newbie] Netscape Email print problem

2003-01-15 Thread Bob Read
I have been using Netscape for email for years (currently
4.78) and haven't had problems. Recently when trying to
print an email where the body is HTML, only the header is
printed. Anyone have an idea why, and how to print the whole
email?
This is happening both on 8an 8.1 updated to 8.2 and
also on an 8.1 updated to 8.2 and then to 9.0.

Using CUPS and an HP Deskjet 600C

Much thanks,

Yes! Personally, I generally use a dual boot drive. When I want
to try something -- update/upgrade, or anything risky -- I first
clone the drive and try the update, etc. on that. If anything
goes wrong I still have the original drive.

DriveCopy, or one of the other cloners, makes a great "backup."

Yes. I received an email from Mandrakestore with apology saying
the batch of mis-directed orders would be shipped starting Monday
December 2. It has now been more than two weeks since that email.

What really gets me is that they have been on the shelves in the

[newbie] SNF7.2 cannot access from msie or redhat browser ...

2002-10-04 Thread Bob Bourne

Can't access SNF7.2 box from msie browser. Can't ping SNF7.2 from Win98 SE
box. New Redhat installation could not find eth0.

I run win98se on both boxes - Internet Connection Sharing - so that seems to
prove that the ethernet connections are OK.

I've been running SNF for months now without any real problems, and then I
crashed it. I've installed it many times without major problems.

But now I can't access through a browser.

I'd appreciate answers or clues ...

Charlie, the ones returned to me from the netherlands showed
that they had been sent by me to an address in the NL, but that
my mail showed a Reply To address at hotmail.
In other words, my post to Newbie had the header changed to
a different addressee and showing a Hotmail "Reply to"
address. If the post had gone out to the list and bounced
from a list member, it should have had Newbie as the Reply

Robin I'm sending a copy to you directly because my earlier

Have you tried simply right-clicking on the desktop, then

(only a single click in each case) I tried it and it works,
but if you double click on "Disable..." it gives the very
symptom you describe. The menu disappears, then comes back in
seconds.

Using failsafe -- or simply changing the linux section of lilo from

causes different scripts to run, and either of them will work and

But that's just bypassing the problem, not solving it.

I
think I've got the first problem from the errata page on the mandrake site.I'm
trying to load mandrake onto a Pentium I machine, but when I get to the
package selection stage of the install, no packages appear.Apparently
what I need to do is make a disk with the patch mandrake provides... the
only problem is that I'm using a pcmcia cd-rom to load mandrake onto my
machine, so I have to boot with a disk instead of the cds.So,
how do I make the appropriate disk that contains both the pcmcia boot image,
and the patch??

I
don't believe  that you  can!   But you can put your
patch on a dos floppy,  boot from the  boot flopy
and
watch for the  program to search for a cdrom.  At That Point
--  eject the boot floppy and insert the

patch
floppy.    That's all it takes.

[newbie] StarOffice 6.0 can't save file

2002-07-02 Thread Bob Read

I have upgraded LM8.1 to 8.2 twice, once leaving StarOffice 5.2
in place
and once after uninstalling 5.2. In the first case, SO Writer would
load
and function for a while -- and suddenly disappear completely.

I suspected 5.2 had caused a problem, and tried an upgrade on another
insallation (8.1 to 8.2) Now SO 6.0 seemed to be running okay, but

when I try to save a file I get this notice:

StarOffice 6.0

Error saving the document Untitled1:
Wrong parameters
The operation was startted under an invalid parameter.

Also, trying to run setup. it starts to load, and the icon hourglass
runs, and then it also disappears.

An help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: [newbie] Zip disk

2002-05-19 Thread Bob Read

-
Probably this is a stupid question, but this my first time with Linux.
I'm trying install a Zip Disk (250 and parallel port) without success.
Please, could someone help me?
I'm working with Mandrake 8.2 and KDE.

Not sure of your case, but in mine,  I solved it by having a readable
zip disk in the drive when booting.  Then the drive was seen,
and
I could mount it. to /mnt/zip

Re: [newbie] XFree 4.2 and SiS 620

2002-05-02 Thread Bob Read

In my case, I solved it by switching to 1024 x 768. for both Mandrake
8.1
and SuSe 7.2 & 7.3.

Both Red Hat and Corel handled SiS 620 easily, But I dan't like
working with either of them.

[newbie] Install Debian Package?

2002-04-28 Thread Bob Read

Is there a good (reasonable?)  way to install  .deb  packages
on Mandrake 8.1?
Is it easier or practical to copy an installed directory and then sweat
out the
dependancies, etc.?
The first one I have in mind is:
wp_ful_8.1-12_i386.deb
TIA
Bob

Seems to me I ran into this once in Gnome, and got out
of it by entering my password with the screen blank,
and it was restored.

[newbie] Floppy Problem w/8.1

2002-04-20 Thread Bob Read

I'm stumped trying to solve a floppy drive problem.

I'm using a PC100 motherboard: AMD k6-II 500 512MB sdram

(Using drive caddies for easy swapping.)

Dual booting Mandrake 8.1 w/ win98, Win98 has no problem
 with floppy, but linux does.

Identical drive, Red Hat /win98, neither have any problem.

With Mandrake, when I try to mount floppy it tells me,
 "Could not mount floppy
  The reported error:
 Mount /dev/fd0: unknown device."

Ctrl Ctr: Block Devices: /dev/fd0 auto N/A /mnt/floppy 00.0 N/A

HardDrake: Doesn't list it under floppy Drives. (But lists my
 external/parallel ZIP drive there.)

Mandrake put a floppy icon on the KDE destop.

POSSIBLY RELATED: When I go into KDE, I get a message
"The process for the file protocal died unexpectedly."
I don't get any warning going into Gnome, but still no
floppy. And am not aware of any other file problems in Kde

Yeah. Try looking in ~/.gnome/ for "freecell". Thats where mine is.
Copy it to a floppy then back to your new system.
Hope thats what you wanted.

[newbie] mandrake 8.1 on dell notebook

2002-01-18 Thread Bob Schmidt

Hi,

I just installed mandrake 8.1 on my dell inspiron
3700 450mhz pIII with 196mb of ram.  Everything went fine, and it works
great . except for this one thing.  My floppy drive is attached via
cable through my parallel port.  The floppy works fine, I can boot from it,
and under redhat 7.1 it works fine.  But under mandrake 8.1 I get an error
that says "unable to mount unknown source".  I then went to linuxconf and
tried to mount it there and got the same message.  Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bob
