[newbie] Installing DOG/bad sym link?

2001-07-03 Thread Bob Paddock

I'm running Mandrake 8.0 on a i586, I'm trying to install the book mark
editor DOG:

http://apps.kde.com/na/2/info/vid/2873

"DOG (Data Organizer) is a personal knowledge manager based on topic maps.
Currently it is spezialized in managing bookmarks. It imports and exports
Netscape, Mozilla and KDE2 (XBEL) bookmark files and imports KDE1 kfm
bookmarks and Windows IE Favorites. "

When I try to install the Mandrake RPM package I get this error:

Found 0 source and 1 binary packages
Dependency Problem:
 libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 is needed by dog-0.4.1-1mdk

I've tried doing this, while in /usr/lib as root:
ln -s libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.a libstdc++-libc6.1-2.a.3
ln -s libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3
ldconfig

I've also tried doing this
cp libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3
ldconfig

Still get the same Dependency Problem Error.

I'm I doing some thing wrong, or can this simply not be done?

[newbie] HP710 printing with CUPS?

2001-01-14 Thread Bob Paddock

When I got my upgrade CD for 7.2 in the mail, I feed it to my
machine and this cool looking LASER Printer icon showed up
on my desk top, don't know why. But I went a head and set
up my HP710 printer. Every thing worked fine, got a very
nice looking test page out of it.

However yesterday, I did a complete reinstall.

Now I can't get any thing to print.

The printer is hooked up locally on the parallel port.

I've tried (K)CUPS to install my HP710, using the data base
on the upgrade CD etc., but every thing just hangs up at the
end for some reason.

For example if I try to install using Linuxconfg/Printer
Config that icon turns gray and nothing more happens after I
tell it my printer is a HP710.

I have seen the message CUPS Dammon not running come out of
KCUPS, but if I look with the Linuxconfig/Control Panel it
says it IS running, doing a 'ps -A' shows cupsd running as
well. They seem disconnected some how.

So how to get back to being able to print?

Also when a program dies, likes seem to be happening with
KCUPS here, how do I get it to go away? In Windoze I used
the three finger salute CTRL-ALT-DEL. Whats the equivalent
under KDE?

[newbie] xemacs missing libraries?

2001-01-03 Thread Bob Paddock

I wanted to install xemacs, but the package manger tells me
it is missing a couple of libraries, libld*.so.1 and
libl*.so.1 some thing like that. I can't find them, where
are they?

Will tell you step-by-step on a CDRW, including fixing the bad link made by

What if you are using GRUB? Does it use the lilo settings?

[newbie] Can't read CD drive after install 7.2

2000-12-23 Thread Bob Paddock

I just installed 7.2 from CDROM, and that all went fine,
reading every thing from the CD set.

However after I reboot the CD drive no longer functions.

I get messages like "Don't have permission" even when I'm
logged in as root. Or some long line about "bad FS, bad
super mount ... on /dev/hdc" error '32'.

As the boot messages scroll by I see /dev/hdc SONY CRX-140E.
So at some level some thing in the system knows a drive is
out there, and it has identified the drive correctly.

It seems like some thing in /etc/fstab is wrong, but I don't
know how to fix it, nothing I've tried has fixed it.

This is a IDE R/W drive, as master, but right now I'm only interested in
getting the system up and running, where Read Only usage
would be fine.
