RE: [newbie] DOS on MBR
Hi, I think this is what you are after; To scrap the current MBR boot from your boot disk and type; fdisk /mbr from a boot disk Then to create the (minimal boot) file system, type; sys c: Of course you will need a DOS (or Win95/95/ME) boot disk with fdisk.exe and sys.com on it to do this. Hope this help Nick -Original Message- From: Davinci [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 06 June 2001 13:32 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] DOS on MBR Hi all, I'm a newbie. Anybody know how to create DOS file system on MBR from C prompt? davinci
RE: [newbie] Copy *.* to *.bak -- how?
Oops, sorry bout that, just got in and jumped the gun - you can write a script to loop through the contents of a directory and perform commands on the files therein, but I don't know it off the top of my head. Dear friends: Let's say I have the following files: File1 File2 File3 etc. Now, normally to make a backup copy of each, I would do the following: cp File1 File1.bk cp File2 File2.bk cp File3 file3.bk etc. My question: Is there a SINGLE command that would allow me to create backups for hundreds of files within a directory at one blow, that is, so as to create the series of backups above: File1 File1.bk File2 File2.bk File3 file3.bk etc. In other words, is there a command that would allow me to do this all at once from within a directory rather than manually copy each file one at a time? Thanks so very much. Benjamin -- Sher's Russian Web http://www.websher.net Benjamin and Anna Sher [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: [newbie] Copy *.* to *.bak -- how?
I believe in my very limited knowledge that the command is mv oldfilename newfilename e.g. mv mydocument mydocument.bak Nick -Original Message- From: Benjamin Sher [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 31 May 2001 04:37 To: Newbie Subject: [newbie] Copy *.* to *.bak -- how? RE: [newbie] kmail configuration or list?
No, it's not just you. Same happens here. I have to cut & paste the newbie address into the To... box every time. RE: [newbie] How to uninstall GRUB OS switcher
I believe you will also have to sys the C drive. What I do is make a Windows boot disk and copy fdisk.exe, format.com and sys.com from c:\windows\command. Then boot from that disk and type; fdisk /mbr sys c: Then you should get your windows loader back. Fdisk /mbr kills the Master Boot Record, it doesn't replace it with the Windows one. Now if only I knew a thing about Linux ;) Nick -Original Message- From: s [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 24 May 2001 07:36 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] How to uninstall GRUB OS switcher Boot into dos and type fdisk/mbr and it should restore the old windows boot record. -s On Wednesday 23 May 2001 07:33 pm, you wrote: > Hey all. RE: [newbie] Looking for a Notebook to run dual boot LM 8.0 and Windows
Yep, I've never really touched Linux beofre, but after reading the review on Littlewhitedog.com I thought I'd give it a go. How easy was it ? I couldn't believe it. Now all I have to do is work out what to do with it ;) Everything seemed to install OK, I even got it browsing the web through our firewall at work. Sound worked too. And I know NOTHING about Linux. Well a tiny bit now. I'm impressed I have to say. My laptop FYI is a Dell Latitude CPx (I think that's the model). Have any of you installed a dual-boot Linux Mandrake 8.0/Windows XX on a notebook? If so, and if the install was fairly painless (or if you could describe the pain), would anyone be able to recommend a brand to me? I'm fairly clueless about notebooks in general (this will be my first one), so any info. you could give would be helpful. Thanks. __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
