[newbie] Installing RPM Packages and Setting Time

2003-01-19 Thread Colin McElhatton
Hi,

I think that now I'm starting to delve a bit deeper into using this extraordinary
Linux release however I've encountered a couple of hitches I hope someone can help me
with.

1. I am trying to install some RPM packages I downloaded but I am at a loss as to how
to install them properly. I tried to install a WINE RPM for instance and I think I did
install it but then I could not find the place where Linux installed it. I used the
KRPM application from the KDE desktop. Any help with this and how to locate installed
applications would be appreciated.

2. I have a multi-boot PC with Win98 / XP and Mandrake installed. When I get into
WinXP the time is OK but when I get into XP the time is always 1 hour ahead. Is there
any way to solve this?

3. Also while I'm at it might as well ask :-)... I have a 56K modem which I use with
Mandrake but which takes a very long time to initialize and start dialing...is there a
way to speed up the initialization process and get it to dial out faster?

Thanks to all in advance.

Re: [newbie] Mandrake Financial Problems

2003-01-15 Thread Colin McElhatton
This is very unsettling news, I really would not want Mandrake to go away any time soon. Of all the Linux flavours I have tried this was the one that I could install without a hitch and whose minor flaws I could fix thanks to this mailing-list among other things. I wish there was more overt support to this distribution as I really think it is work using as a Windows substitute.
The only way this OS is going to gain more support is by having applications that install painlessly all the time, that don't use gzip or tar to unpack them but have proper self-executing installers instead. That the Linux Configuration Centre is streamlined further to allow computer-users vis-a-vis computer professionals to carry out the neccessary day-to-day tweaking without having to know what's happening beneath.
As for me I am happy with what I've got even though I would welcome any improvements...which brings up other considerations to mind, like how about having periodic self-extracting OS improvement packs that take the hassle out of upgrading (say the KDE interface if a newer one comes out). I'm talking off the top of my head here, but I would really like to see the day when opting to go Linux ALL THE WAY will be really easy and full of possibilities even for those who just USE a computer to play games, read email, write a document and maybe use their webcams to communicate with others over the net.

Re: [newbie] On board 3D audio?

2003-01-08 Thread Colin McElhatton
Hi,
I don't know about whether Mandrake does support onboard 3D sound cards however what I do know is that when I first installed Mandrake I had both my onboard sound card and my audigy card identified by the OS. What this meant was however that I could not hear sound as the onboard card was causing some kind of conflict or was incompatibe with Linux Mandrake. When I disabled the onboard card I got my sound back with a vengence. I think tht Mandrake does not support onboard sound but you would have to check this out with someone with more expertise than me.

[newbie] Thanks for the help...just one more thing.

2003-01-03 Thread Colin McElhatton
Hi,

First of all thanks for the help regarding installing a hardware modem as I have
succeeded in installing my Conceptronic External Modem on my Linux Mandrake 9.0
installation. However I am now faced with another problem I am being disconnected from
my service provider sometime after logon is carried out. The first time I was
disconnected after 10 minutes ad the second time after only 3-5 minutes. Is there
anything I can do to troubleshoot this problem?

[newbie] Installing a Conceptronic 56K Modem on Linux Mandrake 9.0

2002-12-27 Thread Colin McElhatton
Hi,

I have recently installed Mandrake 9.0 on my Athlon XP Based system but I am having
problems installing my Hardware Conceptronic 56K Modem (which I have have verified
that should work with Linux). Formerly I had a software modem (at the time of
installing mandrake 9.0).

When I went through the FAQs I came across a utility called setserial which I also
discovered was not installed with Mandrake when I first installed it. Is there a way
to get Mandrake 9.0 to recognise the presence of my modem so that I can get to surfing
the net with Mandrake?

I am a total newbie to these kind of problems so I would appreciate any information
that might facilitate the installation process.

Best Regards,
