Actually it came with the 180k, which I replaced with 360k, then the 720k. I
think the 720 was dd.

[newbie] Squid reverse proxy OWA

2004-08-18 Thread Griffiths, Daniel
Hi,

I have squid set up as a reverse proxy sending request to my machine with Outlook Web
Access on it. Squid seems to be working ok as I can get test pages from the OWA
machine no problems from an external address but I am having problems accessing the
OWA itself from external addresses, it brings up the log in box and then ticks over
untill I get request was cancelled in both frames of the OWA window.

Whats also strange is that I can access OWA through squid fine from an internal
address, although it does bring up the log in details twice...

So what I'm thinking is that when accessing from an external address the
authentication gets messed up somehow.

Has anybody got Squid and OWA to work correctly and if so can you see where I'm going
wrong?

Squid is latest stable version: squid-2.5.STABLE6
OWA is Exchange 2000

Cheers

Dan

I'm seeing 97 peers and 41 seeds, dl speeds in the 70's and 80's. I set my
upload limit to 13 kBs and opened port 6881 on my smoothwall. My only worry
is I may be violating the terms of service agreement with the isp.

Hi,
I wonder if you can help me figure out how to use ipcop with a verizon
dsl connection. I'v tried twice to sub to the ipcop list, but haven't
got a confirmation. The modem is a westell b90-210015-04. I'm currently
using mnf on a mdk9.1 installation, and a dsl pppoe connection. Haven't
been able to get it to work with ipcop or smoothwall.
Thanks

[newbie] wvdial or pppd: what next?

2004-01-02 Thread Daniel Hrbac
I have this modem:

00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corp. 82801DB AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 01)

I used slmodem-2.9.4 and I get dialtone and I am able to dial. It looks
like this:

--> PPP negotiation detected.
--> Starting pppd at Fri Jan  2 14:37:17 2004
--> pid of pppd: 8390
--> Disconnecting at Fri Jan  2 14:38:06 2004
--> The PPP daemon has died: PPP negotiation failed (exit code = 10)
--> man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail.
--> I guess that's it for now, exiting
--> The PPP daemon has died. (exit code = 10)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] dan]#
Now the exit code 10 means:

10 The PPP negotiation failed, that is, it didn't reach the point
where at least one network protocol (e.g. IP) was running.
But I am lost now as for where to look further. Should I modify the
config of wvdial or pppd? Or is it something completely different?
Thanks for showing me the light.

[newbie] Dhcp client issues with samba server and others

2003-10-08 Thread Daniel Buchanan
I have a laptop that's is running dhcp since i move around a lot with
it. For the most part everything works fine except for some services.
Notably samba and ftp. From what i can gather is these services are
requiring an ip addy which is not available at the time they are started
from the rc5.d path. If I then login as root and restart the services
everything works fine. The error message i get from somba nmb service
is no local interfaces.

You need to go here;

http://www.ivor.it/wireless/acx.html for the binary driver that I have
used to set up my D-Link520+ or follow the links off to the the
Sourceforge acx100 OSS driver development page - they have come a long
way
and many people are reporting successes with both your card and router.
I have been running the binary driver for over a month now without a
glitch but they do take a little bit of work to get going.

Samba log messages appear in /var/log/samba/log.user_name

The depth of messages you see depends on the logging level defined in your

log level = 3 (should give you about the right level of detail)

After editing the file restart samba with
service smb restart

2003-07-23 Thread Daniel Buchanan
Only problem is that this virus will spread by targeting the 'weak'
among the population. These people get so infected that one starts to
seriously consider removing them from the gene pool, for the good of the
others. -p

Hello ,

There is a virus that goes around occasionally and causes a lot of

It is one of the few computer viruses that seem to infect humans, and
indeed, the symptoms often show up first in the human, not the
computer. One of the first symptoms is that it makes people want to
reply to the email, and thus spread the virus even further - it is an
insidious virus. As with other viruses, some people suffer the effects
much more than others. It causes some people to behave in very odd,
sometimes violent ways.
Since AV programs do not stop this virus, it is up to each of us to
try and stamp it out. So, if you get a suspicious email that looks as
though it contains the 'Political Discussion' virus, make sure you DO
NOT make the infection worse by sending a reply to others, especially
if you are feeling upset or otherwise affected by the virus. If you
simply cannot control yourself, it is better to quarantine it to, say,
the OT list. People on that list should be aware of the dangers, since
the PD virus, and others, are often likely to infect that group.
Unfortunately, it is a common virus on Internet email lists.

[newbie] samba security premissions.

2003-07-22 Thread Daniel Buchanan
I am trying to configure samba (from mandrake 8.2) to allow everyone to
read a share but to allow only me to have write and delete premissions.
I managed to successfully connect to the share from a windoze 2k machine
using my samba user/password. The linux,it's a laptop, and win2k
machines are on different domain/workgroups. I noticed that no
conections ever show up in the all conections list nor in the one for
the share as well. I would really like to know where to look to see a
login/activity log. I'm attaching my .conf file as well. The win2k
machine is on a microbully network with a win2k server running as a pdc
and the laptop is on the workgroup that runs at home. I have never been
able to do this type of configuration so i'm hopping it's just something
simple. I use webadmin for my system maintenance.

# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed

Well thanks for all your help guys. I was really pleased to get such a quick response. I went to work on the machine last night and I tried the Xtart thing and it failed, so I guess that means that the chipset is not supported. I happened to have a newish Slackware disk with me so I installed it to see how it would cope with the savage and it just defaulted to the Vesa server and that worked fine, even with KDE 3.1.0. I put the same setup on Mandrake using XFdrake and it worked fine there too, no surprise.

I don't really undrestand why Mandrake doesn't default in the same way after not finding a suitable driver. Does the vesa server mean that the card is not being used properly (or at all). I would think its fine for an easy peasy newbie friendly installation if it just defaults to vesa so at least people can have a look at the desktop and be happy that the installation has gone ok. People who want to get the maximum out of their graphics card will soon find out if it's not being used properly and can go and fix it. I still didn't open the case, the computer is not mine so I'll avoid doing that until I really have to.

Thanks once again for the help, hope I can be of help to you sometime.
Ciao,
Daniel Hutton

[newbie] Savage drivers

2003-06-12 Thread Hutton Daniel

Hello,
I'm installing
Mandrake for an association that I'm part of and I'm having trouble getting x
configured on a dual boot pc with a newly installed Madrake 9.1. I got all the
graphics card info from windows which tells me that the graphic card
is;
S3 Grphics ProSavage
DDR with 32Mb memory and a "S3 P4M266" chip set.
I didn't open the
box to check it and the documentation doesn't say what the card actually is.
>From the position of the video port it looks like the grafics card might be
inetgrated into the motherboard.
X just won't start.
I've tried all the savage drivers but none of them pass the test during
installation. I skipped the X set up during installation and then went and tried
again with XFdrake but still no luck. I've tried both the versions of XFree86
offered to me during installation. Using XFdrake I checked that the monitor is
set up ok and it has used  values which exactly match the values in the
manual so I'm pretty sure the autodetect has worked well for the
monitor.
Sorry if this is a
tough one but I'm really stuck. Many thanks in advance to anyone who can
help.

Ciao,
Daniel
Hutton

P.S I love 9.1, it's
first time I've tried Mandrake and I've already put it on 3
computers.

Ive run xmms from a shell and nothing is printed to screen.

Im using Mandrake 9.1 on a Mac. Ive just found out that my Xmms hasn't
found any audio plugins or output plugins. I used mpg123 to find out if
my sound card was working and it is. So that must mean the sound drivers
are running. Im wondering how i should get the plugins required.

Ive also noticed on my brother machine which is running debian on an
intel machine that in his Audio I/O Plugins he has:

Input Plugin
MPEG Layer 1/2/3 Player 1.2.7

Output Plugin
OSS Driver 1.2.7

I take it I will need something like this in my setup aswell. If you
could tell me how I could do this, the help would be greatly
appericated.

The file type is .mp3. I bring up load file to put a song in the play
list ddbl click on the song and the load window goes away.

Is there away to check if some sorta error came up under the logs.

Tell me about it! :) I just solved this exact problem myself yesterday.

It's Mandrake's security program "msec" that's doing this to you.

I fixed it by going to /usr/share/msec and editing the perm.? file
(where "?" is the number corresponding to the security level you are
using) and commenting out the line that says "/home/*". It's this
particular line that says all directories in /home should have a certain
level of permissions. If you comment the line, msec won't change the
permissions of subdirectories of /home. (When you look at the entire
file you'll probably get the gist.)

The command "rpm -ql msec" will list all the files in the msec package,
if you want to poke around (as I like to do).

I've been looking for a good simple paket terminal program for a while. Ran
paket61 on dosemu for a while. Worked real well, but I'd rather run a pure

Yes, I've been a ham since 1991. A friend, kc4ubu, suggested Opera. He has the
windows version 7 I think. I've been trying to get him to try Linux. I
installed Mandrake 9.0 on his son's computer and the boy really likes it.
His dad said he is reinstalling windows today because all the files he
downloads are corrupted. Reinstall reboot reboot reboot. I got tired of that
and started using Linux a few years ago.

I tried Opera today, and the only problem I have is the page fonts display
very small and distorted, tried several different pages, and all the
different settings, I can improve it somewhat by using my own fonts, but
still far inferrior to Galeon's display of the page fonts. Maybe Galeon has
access to fonts not available to Opera. Any ideas?

You will probably need monitor and keyboard for install and initial setup. You
will have to set your bios to not stop on errors, in order to remove keyboard
and monitor. ssh works great for admin.

I find this to be a poor solution for many reasons:

1. This is a *newbie* list, and some of the people on it really are newbies
who have more pressing issues on their mind than how to set up such a filter.

2. I don't like the idea of setting up new filters every time a new OT
subject pops up.

3. Not everybody reads mail continuously. By the time I got around to
checking this list there were already 10-20 OT messages clogging up the list.

4. If the signal:noise ration on this list goes down low enough it ceases
being a worthwhile mailing list.

This is an e-mail list, not a web forum. Subscribers have no choice but to
accept (or somehow process) everything that comes down the line, so please
be considerate and keep the OT stuff to a minimum.

[newbie] kernel panic during install when formatting swap partition on PowerMac 8600

2003-01-05 Thread Daniel Segel
I'm trying to install Mandrake 8.2/PPC on a Powermac 8600/300 with 2x4GB
SCSI hard drives and 192MB RAM in it. I've tried installing onto both
drives, but I get the same error either way. The problem I'm having is that
I get a kernel panic when the installer gets to the point of trying to
format the swap partition. If I don't create a swap partition then it goes
through that step just fine, but obviously I wouldn't bother continuing in
that case.

The weird part is that I get a similar crash when trying to install
Yellowdog linux as well, but it's only the swap partition that causes a
problem.

I've already tried a low-level format of the drives, and I've tried putting
the swap partition in different places on the drive. I also ran the
Yellowdog version of parted and tried creating partitions manually -
everything goes fine until I actually try to create the filesystem on the
swap partition, then it blows up. Actually, if I create a really small swap
partition (~10MB) then it works OK, but 128MB or larger doesn't. I haven't
done any testing to determine the largest successful swap partition I can
create a filesystem on.

Any ideas? This has been driving me crazy for a week now.

Thanks,

Daniel

Daniel,

First...I'm hoping that it was a copy and paste error, but you are
missing the 'i' on image=/boot/vmlinux on the first (default) entry.

In addition, the default entry is the only one with the append= line
that does not read append="devfs=mount hda=ide-scsi hdd-scsi"

('quiet' keeps you from seeing all the 'goodies' load--I prefer to see
that everything is loading o.k., so I have removed it.)

Without those ide-scsi and hdd-scsi entries, your system is going to
have problems 'seeing' them. I would suggest that you modify the
append= line in your first (default) entry to read either:

append="quiet devfs=mount hda=ide-scsi hdd-scsi"

or

append="devfs=mount hda=ide-scsi hdd-scsi"

Either way, once you have made the change and saved the lilo.conf file,
at a (root) command prompt, type 'lilo' or '/sbin/lilo' (without quote
marks). You will get a return of the new lilo configuration, so you
know it 'took'.

Then do a normal shutdown and restart...your CD drive should then be
available as a CDROM and a CD burner.

(BTW: I have found eroaster to be very reliable and much easier to
configure...personal opinion, of course.)

[newbie] Newsgroup reader in text mode

2002-12-01 Thread Daniel Chen
Hi,

I am wondering which newsgroup reader every uses under console (text)
mode. I tried to use tin but it was not installed by default on my MDK
9.0 box. Does anybody have a suggestion of which one I should install or
which one has already installed by default?

It's supposed to be on install cd 1, with 8.2 powerpack anyway, but is not
there, so it doesn't get installed.

Yes.

The distribution Mandrake Linux 9.0 (dolphin) was installed on a PC.

The drives were designated by the OS as the following:

hda: DVD-ROM drive. (Connected to motherboard IDE controller.)
hdc: LS-120 floptical drive. (Connected to motherboard IDE controller.)
hde: 80.0 GB HDD. (Connected to PCI IDE controller.)
hdg: 15.3 GB HDD. (Connected to PCI IDE controller.)

In Windows XP Professional the drives were designated as:

Drive A: LS-120 floptical drive. (Connected to motherboard IDE controller.)
Drive C: 80.0 GB HDD. (Connected to PCI IDE controller.)
Drive D: 15.3 GB HDD. (Connected to PCI IDE controller.)
Drive E: DVD-ROM drive. (Connected to motherboard IDE controller.)

No solution to the unconventional Mandrake Linux 9.0 drive distribution was
found.

The details were the following.

Subject: Hard Disks Are Not Detected in a Intel System that Has an ATA
Controller Card in a Debian 3.0 Installation 3.0.23 Program

On a 2 hard-disk drive PC with Windows XP Professional and a Promise
“Ultra133 TX2" ATA controller card
(http://www.promise.com/product/subsys_detail_eng.asp?pid=87&fid=3) the
Debian Installation System 3.0.23 (built on 15/05/02) that used kernel
2.4.18-bf2.4 from the cover DVD of the November edition of “Linux Format”
magazine gave the error message

"No hard disk drives were detected"

after the

"Configure the Keyboard"

selection was made.

When an attempt to access the floppy-disk drive for the ATA controller's
device drivers was made, there was an error message that stated that the
floppy-disk drive could not be mounted.

Mandrake Linux 9.0 CD-ROMs were purchased from The Linux Emporium
(http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk/). The PC was booted from the first Mandrake
binary CD. Both hard-disk drives were detected along with the LS-120
floptical drive which had the installation configuration written to it.

The Mandrake Linux distribution was installed.

The drives were designated by the OS as follows:

hda: DVD-ROM drive. (Connected to motherboard IDE controller.)
hdc: LS-120 floptical drive. (Connected to motherboard IDE controller.)
hde: 80.0 GB HDD. (Connected to PCI IDE controller.)
hdg: 15.3 GB HDD. (Connected to PCI IDE controller.)

In the Debian 3.0 boot argument

"floppy=thinkpad"

produced the error message:

"Could not find kernel image: floppy=t.him"

(sic).

Another boot argument

"bootfloppy0"

produced the error message:

"VFS: Insert root floppy and press ENTER
request_module[block-major-2]: Root fs not mounted
VFS: Cannot open root device "fd0" on 02:00
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 02:00"

and then the system hung.

The kernel image

"idepci"

was not available as a boot argument.

Before I send messages to the newbie newsgroup, I disable the receipt
request in the mail program. (I didn't realise that it could be an
annoyance.)

In the subject field of your e-mail, what does the abbreviation "O.T." stand
for?

The Internet dial-up tool KPPP was used to connect (via Mandrake Control
Centre, Network & Internet, Connection) to the internet and produced the
following error message:

"Timeout expired while waiting for the PPP interface to come up."

In

Networking, Remote access, KPP (Internet Dial-up Tool)

the

Login Script Debug Window

displayed:

"ATZ

In

the

KPPP PPP log produced:

In

Mandrake Control Centre, System, Services

the status of Internet service is

"running".

No I hadn't checked the 128 kbps broadband service recently. I have now.
Unfortunately at present I can't afford the service. However, thank you for
letting me know of the cheaper price for the service.

I once contacted ntlworld's technical support. Three minutes were spent by a
member of staff trying to confirm my details after which time I was told
that support wasn't given for my query.

An external MODEM only is used to access an ISP. There is just the one PC
and there is not a network interface card installed.

The system file "resolv.conf" was edited to

# search localdomain
search localdomain
nameserver 194.168.4.100
nameserver 194.168.8.100

# ppp temp entry

but the PC was not rebooted.

In KMail, File, Send Queued, the following error message appeared:

Sending failed:
Could not connect to host 62.253.162.40.

In KMail, File, Check Mail, the following error message appeared:

Could not connect to host 62.253.162.50.

I didn't know of that method of file copying.

Hi,
Guess I just got lucky with a hardware combination that the software
likes. I previously had an older Mitsumi burner, had a lot of problems with
it. I like the nice frontend for cdlabelgen that Gcombust has. Haven't used
it for burning though.

[newbie] Chkrootkit shows nothing?

2002-05-10 Thread Daniel Stiefel

A few days ago, I got some KWrited docs popping up on my Mandrake 8.1
desktop ("Security warning: World Writeable files found" followed by a long
list of files located on both hardrives). I am a linux newbie and assumed
the popups were the product of some kind of monitoring utility that I had
inadvertently installed.

Although I have a simple workstation setup (except for the extra partitions
and triple boot aspect to it) and installed 8.1 with medium security, I went
back into the control panel and re-set it to medium security and the Kwrited
popups stopped appearing.

>From the lists of files displayed, I assumed my machine had been compromised
and that I would have to partition, reformat, reload the win98, mandrake 8.1
and Redhat 5.1 partition in order to make things right. I downloaded
chkrootkit and ran it while booted to the main HD/ Mandrake 8.1 just to see
what was up. Surprisingly it showed nothing. I'm not sure why that is. I
am not familiar with chkrootkit and may have failed to run it so that it
searched all of the drives.

Can anyone tell me how to run it to seach RH 5.1 or the win98SE partition?
Can that be done from 8.1 on the other drive as I attempted? Does it check
comprehensively or does it only check the drive/OS that it is booted to?

Secondly, is it possible that, despite the KWrited popops that occured on 2
different occasions, my machine is unnaffected?

Re: [newbie] Postfix error message

2002-03-18 Thread Daniel Chen

Thank you for your help. I did check the diskspace and it has plenty of
space available. However, I figured out the problem and I would like to
share with everybody here.

Two days ago I install a guestbook cgi in my Apache web server. One
thing I did not know is that every time when someone signed the
guestbook, it will sent a notice email to the web master I set up in the
Apache setting. The way it send the email is put a message in
/var/spool/postfix/maildrop Unfortunately, this folder is not own by
Apache and it did not allow world to write in the directory. So, how do
I solve the problem? I change the permission to world writable. I know
it probably is not a good idea for security reason, so I am looking if
any of you expert can give me some advice.

Hi,

I have a question about Postfix. I set up my Mandrake Linux 8.1 with postfix
as the SMTP server between my LAN and the Internet. It worked fine for
the last two months. Today, when I checked the syslog, I was shock
because I saw the error message like this:

Mar 17 08:34:22 Debussy postfix/postdrop[13481]: warning: mail_queue_enter: create
file maildrop/639339.13481: Permission denied
Mar 17 08:34:27 Debussy postfix/postdrop[13484]: warning: mail_queue_enter: create

Mar 17 08:34:37 Debussy postfix/postdrop[13498]: warning: mail_queue_enter: create

These messages repeated almost 1000 times in my syslog. It made paranoid.
Can anybody tell me what may go wrong with my Postfix? Thank you!

Re: [newbie] Apache user directory

Hi Daniel,
First of all, sorry for my bad english.
Try this:
Add this lines in httpd.conf
 UserDir enabled user_name
 Alias /~username /~home/username/public_html

Create the folder "public_html" and change permissions as root:
 chown -R username:apache ~username/public_html
 chmod -R 711 ~username
 chmod -R 755 public_html

This works in my server. I have installed Linux Mandrake 8.1.

Today is my first time using perl script. I read from the book said if I

I have set the permission of this test.pl to 777

However, when I did that, the shell gave me a error message said

If I type
perl test.pl

/usr/bin/perl test.pl

[newbie] software manager gives errors on all rpms

I downloaded and was attempting to install firestarter. The rpm had
dependencies that were on the Core System Install disk. Unfortunately after
inserting the disk the computer completely froze, leaving me no other option
than the reset button. I thought I had an idea of the files that were needed
so I copied them and placed them into a directory of their own and added a
new media with the urpmi.addmedia daniel file://home/daniel/misc/ command. I
then tried to install firestarter again and received other dependcy errors. I
gave up on installing firestarter and removed that media.

Now when I attempt to install anything, for example xmms, I get "Bad,
unreadable or not found packages , xmms."

Thanks in advance for any help you have to offer

stuck at LIST command. Can anyone tell me how to solve this problem? Thank

[newbie] Help me with Mandrake 8.1 bootloader and other problems

2001-11-08 Thread Daniel deHam

I installed Mandrake 8 on my computer that I recently put together from scratch. I
chose to install the text-based LILO. When it booted up, it got to the "LI" and it
hung right there. I downloaded Mandrake 8.1. During the install this time, it said
"Installation of bootloader failed. The following error occurred: Syntax error near
line 6 in file/etc/lilo.conf" So when it went back to installing the bootloader again
in the install, I chose to install GRUB. GRUB worked fine. So I thought, I'll see if I
can install LILO now that GRUB works. I went to Mandrake Control Center and installed
LILO. Lilo did the same thing again and stopped at the LI. So, I booted from the
floppy, and installed GRUB again from the Mandrake Control Center. Now GRUB doesn't
work. It hangs after displaying "GRUB GRUB" on startup. I can boot fine from the
floppy though. Is there another way to re-install the bootloader? Is there a way to
install Mandrake without changing my current configuration?

I have some more general questions:

How do I adjust the volume in Mandrake Linux? I'm running KDE. The startup sound
always blasts out of my speakers when I login.

Is there a "Task Manager" in Linux, like there is in Windows2000? I typed "top" but
there are too many processes to display in the window. How do I see all the processes?

When it crashes, what do I do? Hit the reset button? It crashed, and I didn't know
what to press.

Is Kmovie buggier than hell? It won't play most of my music videos, and if I choose to
open another movie file when I'm playing something, it crashes. Is there a better
movie player for Linux?

Why can I only use traceroute when I'm logged in as root? How do I allow normal users
to use traceroute?

When I click on the "Home" icon in my home directory, it goes to "/mnt/cdrom2" for
some reason. When in Konquerer, and I click the Home icon, it goes to my home
directory though. How do I make it so when I click the desktop icon, it goes to
"/home/ddeham"?

Finally, I know this is asking a lot, but is there any way I can watch TV with my ATI
All In Wonder Radeon card in Linux?

Answers to any of these questions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Daniel

RE: [newbie] resizing partitions

2001-08-29 Thread Cashman, Daniel J

You may find it is eaiser to use 3rd party software such as partion magic to
resize your drive. I have setup various dual boot systems several times
with win 2k and win 98. I have found that partion magic is very simple and
effective. I recommend letting LILO handle the booting as it is easy
understand and configure.

Found the easiest and less hassle was to install on two HD's.
One linux and one Windoze 98.
With windoze already installed Mandrake installed first time.
Make windows the master, the master boot record will be rewritten
and your windows virus checker will spot this.
