I always find Ogg Vorbis to be really slow compared to mp3 encoding. I use gogo and I can rip using cdda2wav and encode using gogo at like up 10x speeds. Ogg usually runs at about 1.5 X or something. -- 0 Dave Naylor <|> [---] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] xinetd
Hi I installed a few security updates via Mandrake Update to my MDK 8.0 system over the weekend. One of them was an updated xinted. All seemed to go well. Tonight I found the need to telnet to my machine, and couldnt, no telnet service. I tracked it down to the fact that xinetd wasnt running. Further investigation found that the binary in /usr/sbin was called xinetd- and not just plain xinetd. Renaming it now has it starting up again from cold boot. Anyone else come across this, or is it old hat? -- O Dave Naylor [ It's something unpredictable but ] <|>[ in the end is right, I hope you ] [---]Linux user [ had the time of your life. ] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Thing is though, there isnt a /etc/sysconfig/desktop file? [newbie] Fonts in KDE 2.1
Hello Yesterday I took the plunge and installed 8.0beta2 from scratch. One of the things I'm struggling with is fonts in KDE. Whilst on 7.2 everything was fine and I had installed a load of ttf fonts that were formerly used on Windows. What's happened now is that although I've now reinstalled them, and Gnome sees them, KDE refuses to let me use anything other than 6 or 7 basic fonts. If I go to fonts in "Look n Feel" again all I can see is these few not very attractive fonts. What gives? [newbie] ReiserFS
Hi I'm about to take delivery of and then install 7.2, I currently have 7.1. I've decided to do a completely fresh install but I also want to try ReiserFS for the first time. This would seem like an ideal opportunity to do it. Can I, from installation, define which filesystem I want to use or do I have to let the installer set up all my partitions as ext2 and then go through a labourious backup>reformat>restore? -- ODave Naylor [ Y@C 07092-033913 ] <|> [ [EMAIL PROTECTED] ] |---| ICQ 16742766 [ SMS [EMAIL PROTECTED] ]

[newbie] SCSI Scanner and Stuff
Hi I have an Epson GT7000 SCSI scanner which I decided to move to my Linux machine yesterday. I fitted the Adaptec SCSI adaptor which was recognised and then plugged in the scanner. When I tried to run SANE to find the scanner I got an error because it couldn't find libgimp.so.1? I have Mandrake 7.1 which I've upgraded with Helix Gnome and therefore Gimp 1.1.24. Any ideas anyone? This brings me onto my next question, how does one probe the SCSI bus to see which devices are attached? I also have a Brooktree Corp TV Card, will this run under Linux at all? On an unrelated note I have a SB Live! card which I could never get to run under Winbloze, I just couldn't get any sound. Due to the chat about such cards in here I re-installed it and Mandrake found it straight away and it was up and running almost immediately! :) -- ODave Naylor [ [EMAIL PROTECTED] ] <|>[ http://davenaylor.net ] |---| ICQ 16742766 [ Regd Linux User #182470 ]
[newbie] Install Prob
Hi I tried installing Sawfish .30 on my Mandrake 7.1 system this morning but it seems to require libreadline.so.3 whereas I have so.4 installed. I wrote to the Sawfish author who tells me that it's because it was built on Red Hat 6.2 which uses so.3 unlike Mandrake which has so.4. He suggests rebuilding the RPMs. Sorry for being a newbie, but what the heck do I have to do? -- O Dave Naylor <|> |---| ICQ 16742766

[newbie] Upgrade
Hello Folks, I've ordered 7.1 on CDs and I'm waiting for it to arrive. From what I can tell the best way to install it is to do a complete new installation. That's OK but what exactly can I back up to make the transition from 7.0 to 7.1 as painless as possible. What's more, how :) Tara! -- ODave Naylor <|> |...| [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[newbie]
Hello Chaps, I'm still having compilation problems. I can install from RPMs with no worries but trying to compile/install source is not working. It seems to fall over by not finding confdefs.h Is this a problem or not, if it's a file I'm missing, where do I get it :) Tara! -- ODave Naylor <|> |...| [EMAIL PROTECTED]
