[newbie] Re: "NTLDR Missing" Error -- Dual Boot

2005-05-15 Thread Frank L
I'm not sure what I did, but I just tried re-installing everything on the
same drive and it seems to work.

Thanks.

[newbie] "NTLDR Missing" Error -- Dual Boot

2005-05-14 Thread Frank L
I just did a fresh install of XP Pro and Mandriva 10.2. Everything seemed
to work fine, but when I tried to start XP I got the error message "NTLDR is
Missing" "Press Ctl Alt Del to restart". If I try to restart Windows I get
the same error message.

[newbie] New Install Questions

2005-05-13 Thread Frank L
I am about to install Mandriva Linux as a dual boot with XP Pro. Before I
jump in, I would like to make sure I am doing everything correctly. I have
a Pentium III 800mhz w/500MB RAM and three hard drives: 40GB, 110GB and
200GB. Here are my questions:

1.Is it best to install XP and Linux on the same drive or separate
drives? I have a small preference do it on one drive, but it doesn't really
matter to me.

2.How do I format the 110GB and 200GB drives? I assume FAT32, but
should I use Linux or the disk utility that came with the drives?
a)The 200GB drive is too big for my computer's BIOS, so some disk
utility loads at startup to allow XP to see the entire drive. Will this be
a problem under Linux?
b)All my music is on the 200GB drive. That drive is currently
formatted NTFS, so I am in the process of copying the contents to the other
drives, reformatting the 200GB drive as FAT32, then I will recopy the music
back to the 200GB drive. When I format the 200GB drive as FAT32, is there
anything I should be conscious of regarding partition sizes?

3. What order of steps should I take. I was planning on the following:
a)Load XP on the 40GB drive (other drives will not be plugged in).
b)Load Linux on 40GB drive (with all drives plugged in -- I assume
this will recognize XP on 40GB drive for dual-boot and 200GB/110GB drives
for storage)

Any help would be appreciated.
