Add a new swap partition so that you have 2 swaps instead of one.

You should use fetchmail first. This will get the mail from the mail server of

Re: [newbie] Kernel installation(Long message)

1999-05-24 Thread Gilbert Espinosa

Actually, the RPM kernel upgrades do take care of that. The process is similar
when you first install Mandrake. You did not have to compile a kernel then.
Most probably, the new modules that come with the kernel have problems with
your hardware, probably the sound card.

Yes it might work. Though running it again might cause your PC to hang up when
its loading the modules. What's your sound card anyway? The new kernels seem to
be looking for a different way to configure the sound. I tried upgrading the
kernel before using the RPM's and after that my sound card refused to work with
the new module. Not even pnpdump and isapnp can make it work (worked in
2.0.36).

Just talk to people using Redhat and you'll be surprised as to how many
features they still have to configure on their box. Mandrake is not only
Redhat + KDE. It's overall a better distribution in all aspects and we have
to give the Mandrake team credit for that. Redhats RPM packaging just
provides the packaging of the software (It sounds redundant I know). If
Mandrake was just a mirror image of Redhat then why make us wait for
Mandrake 6. They could have ridden the bandwagon which Redhat unfortunately
seems to have done and released it. Redhat 6 is using many early releases
while Mandrake 6 I expect would put in the more stable versions.

I have the same card and here is how to make it work.

at the terminal prompt type:

pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf

This will output different plug and play combinations for all plug and
play devices. Edit /etc/isapnp.conf and simply remove the preceding "#"
to the dma and I/O settings that your card uses. If all is ok save the
file then reboot and isapnp will now wake up your card. Use sndconfig to
generate the modules.conf and test the card to hear Linus say "Linux".

PS

Read up on isapnp tools on the /usr/docs directory for more info.

Another way is to open a terminal and type "modemtool" at the prompt. This
lets you assign /dev/modem to the actual port of the serial modem.
Choose from:

/dev/cua0com1
/dev/cua1com2
/dev/cua2com3
/dev/cua3com4

You can't access the MBR using delete. When LILO is gone dos should
replace it with its own boot record. Format will rebuild it for you
without erasing the data in your HD.

/proc/sys/kernel is not a physical location in the hard disk. It is
similar to a RAM drive that Linux creates every boot time so that system
processes info are accessible from the ext2 filesystem. Your kernel
sources are still on the CD. You just need to install them since they are
not included during the installation.

Hi Will:

After doing the steps mentioned here, you can add more info to your account
by using chfn. At root you can type "chfn your_user_name" and just answer
what follows. You can also change your own finger information (chfn) as a
regular user by just typing "chfn". You can only change your own info if you
are not root. You can as an alternative, use "linuxconf" to do this if you'd
prefer a graphical version. Just look for the appropriate entry.

Is ncftp still working after the upgrade? I tried this a few weeks ago and
ncftp stopped working. My old sound configuration for 2.0.36 also was not

The games in that directory do not need X to run. Just exit KDE and go
to that directory and type the name of the game at the console preceded
by "./". eg.
./gomoku
./quiz baby adult (I like this one, just type ./quiz to
see other categories.)

The X based games are in /usr/X11R6/bin mixed together with other
programs.

If you installed Mandrake from the CD, its most likely that the kernel-source
rpm is not installed in your system. The installation does not put it on your
system by default to save space I presume. FYI the error message "no rule
to..." means that the make files needed for recompiling are not found. They
are in the kernel-source. If you really need to recompile the kernel you need
to install that first. You can find it at the first CD (powerpack) or
installation CD at /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS look for the file
"kernel-source-2.036-3.i386.rpm". If you're using KDE use kpackage to install
it or type "rpm -ivh kernel-source-2.0.36-3.i386.rpm" at the xterminal. Once
you've done this just follow the documents that you have been reading for
recompiling the kernel.

Some mirrors at http://www.linux-mandrake.com have the 2.2.5 kernel with the
Alan Cox patch. They are all RPMs so its very easy actually. Just be sure to
follow the README file.

No, actually I saw that trick in one of the Linux Documentation. Don't know
which one but it does work. Of course you can't do that if you're logged in over
a network. It is found in the /etc/inittab file. It sure sounds funny though.

The fastest way for a regular user to shutdown is to press ctrl-alt-del then
press the off button when the screen shows the initial boot up sequence. eg
before memory check

[newbie] netscape 4.5

1999-05-05 Thread Gilbert Espinosa

If anyone wants to upgrade his netscape 4.08 which is the default
version installed by Linux Mandrake. There's an RPM version in the APPS
directory of the CD of netscape version 4.5. just beside the RPM's for
kernel 2.2.1. It's the only RPM I've seen of Netscape 4.5 since its
packaged by Mandrake.

Hello:

cua0 is Com 1 under Windows/Dos. Are you sure your modem is at Com 1?
Modems are usually in Com 3 if you're mouse is in Com 2 and Com 4 if your
mouse is in Com 1. You can't have a setting other than :

Com 1 : Mouse = Com 4 : Modem
Com 2 : Mouse = Com 3 : Modem

This is because most PC's are only allowed 2 serial ports. Usually,
Internal Modems have a Com 4 setting which means you have to set it to
cua3, External Modems have Com 3 which is cua2 in Linux. That's all that I
can suggest for now.
