Well, probably because Gentoo would take about 5 years to compile on that machine. Despite all the optimizations, running Gentoo on anything less than a 1.5-1.6 GHz machine is IMO crazy, since everything has to be compiled. It takes forever on anything slower. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

No, that means the SMART package manager. SMART is a technology that does better dependency checking than urpmi or apt-get, and is package manager agnostic, so it can be used with urpmi or apt-get. In fact, it is already in contrib. Probably what will happen, based on the discussions going on on the Cooker ML, is that some of the cool elements of SMART will be integrated into urpmi somehow. But no one thinks urpmi will be ditched for apt-get, especially since apt4rpm is, as I understand it, unmaintained. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Sorry, in my experience it is impossible for developers to do this, most just don't have the skill. This kind of documentation requires somebody with excellent writing skills to learn the software and then sit with someone that doesn't know it to determine what is important to be documented. A time consuming and laborious task. You are asking for a lot. > 2. Create a wizard systen or step-step procedure to set up the > software. Just a basic setup will do. I can't think of what settings office personnel should need easy access to if the machines are set up properly to begin with, and for those I can think of, if you know where to go, it is easy, but maybe not familiar, so perhaps training and expectations was the falldown here, not ease of use. 'urpmi perl' Also, you have a choice to run vncserver as a service, or as a user. Run it as a service, so it automatically starts on reboot and is always available, by editing /etc/sysconfig/vncserver and then doing 'service vnc start' The other option is to just run it as user and this is nice if you don't want it running all the time by just typing vncserver as a user. Since it was the mp3 file that caused the error, it might not be worthwhile to do any more. At this point, any info would go into simply making taglib and/or amarok crash more gracefully for instances of whatever error your mp3 had. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I have not had a problem with the app crashing while scanning a collection. Many of the problems I did have were in fact solved by upgrading taglib to 1.3.1. It is possible that your tags have a few problems (non-standard elements may be a better term) that is causing taglib to crash. If you run amarokapp from the command line, is there anyoutput from the crash? I compiled this package with debug off, but if you really want to get to the bottom of this, I could make you a special package with debug on and then help you run it from within gdb so the devs can get a proper backtrace on your problem. If so, you might try removing or renaming the following files and directories, which will start over and lose all your stats, but might work. Start with removing ~/.kde/share/config/amarokrc and then restart and see if that helps. It will restore all of the defaults. If that doesn't work, you can remove all the amarok data files by getting rid of this directory: ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok > The main problem for me now, with respect to mysql, is that I can't tell > whether it's actually running or not. [newbie] amaroK 1.2 final
For anyone that have been using my beta packages of amaroK, I have test packages up for 1.2 final. I have been testing all morning, and everything seems good, but before 1.2 final is officially announced by the amaroK team, they would like to see the packages tested more. Since I am the only Mandrake user on the amaroK project, I am appealing to the expert and newbie lists for a few brave souls who will test these packages. http://www.gkmweb.com/amarok/10.1 http://www.gkmweb.com/amarok/10.1/amarok-1.2-3.101mdk.i586.rpm http://www.gkmweb.com/amarok/10.1/libmusicbrainz4-2.1.1-3mdk.i586.rpm http://www.gkmweb.com/amarok/10.1/libmusicbrainz4-devel-2.1.1-3mdk.i586.rpm A few notes. - mysql is now a runtime option, so now there is only one package. Both mysql and sqlite users can use the same package. There is a configuration screen to select the database you wish to use. - when you first start this verson, it should drop your collection and rescan. This should not (and in fact did not here) screw up your stats. - There is a small update to libmusicbrainz, so grab those packages too, but libtunepimp and taglib did not change, so if you have been using my beta packages and have already installed them, you will only need libmuiscbrainz. Please let me know about any problems. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

Cool, glad to hear it. with respect to stuff like gstreamer with a lot of plugins, I find it easiest to use rpmdrake so I can scan the whole list of those available and read the descriptions. but at a minimum, you'll need gstreamer-mad for mp3, gstreamer-vorbis for ogg's, gstreamer-faad for aac, and you can do them all at once with: urpmi gstreamer-mad gstreamer-vorbis gstreamer-faad If you use any other codecs like musepack or flac, you'll see plugins for them in the list. There may also be a meta package called gstreamer-plugins that installs them all automagically. BTW, I have a test package of 1.2 final up if you're interested in testing. It fixes a a lot of bugs since beta4, plus I turned debug off so it is a lot smaller. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? How can I do that? if you mean yo uare trying to run amarok after streamtuner, it is likely that amarok is hiodden to the sytem tray. When you hit the x on the window manager, amarok hides, but doesn't exit. You actually have to quit from the menu. I have built packages for 10.1 and have uploaded them to the usual place and they should install cleanly over my beta3 packages. There have been no updates to taglib or any of the other libraries that needed to be updated on 10.1, so the beta4 package should be all you need. If you don't have amaroK beta installed yet, I highly recommend you try it, it is an awesome new audio player for linux. All the updates you need are in the same directory as the amaroK packages. Once again, there is a package that includes mysql support. More info here http://amarok.kde.org packages are here http://www.gkmweb.com/amarok/10.1 For anybody still using 10.0, I am having lots of trouble with my chroot build environment for 10.0, so I don't have beta4 packages, but I hope to get the time to fix it and get them up later this week but no promises. Have fun. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

I did it on my desktop, and it did not go as smoothly as the 9.2 to 10.0 upgrade using the same method. A lot of packages did not install properly, which I chalk up to not restarting urpmi after updating first the kernel and then glibc. Probably the way to go is to update urpmi first, then glibc, reboot, then update everything else, and finally the kernel, remembering to urpme devfs and urpmi udev. I had trouble with udev starting even with devfs uninstalled ad it turned out to be a lock file somewhere, but I don't remember exactly which file. Anyway, this is not the step-by-step I know you were hoping for, but I hope it helped. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] AmaroK beta3
For those interested, AmaroK released a 3rd beta of the 1.2 release. You'll need the libtunepimp and libmusicbrainz packages also to get the Muscibrainz support. Unfortunately, I only have packages for 10.1 available because I hosed my 10.0 build environment by accident. Then again, if you are still running 10.1, you probably shouldn't be beta testing software :) More info here: http://amarok.kde.org Packages here: http://www.gkmewb.com/amarok/10.1 -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? And then they stop for awhile, and then they come back. I'm thiking that they stop when wohever it is turns their machine off. I sent a message twice to tpgi to report it. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com
[newbie] Virus laden e-mail
Is anybody else on this list getting bombarded with virus laden e-mail from a particular ip address in Australia? Whoever it is is sending to the address that I use for the Mandrake lists, so I am thinking it may be one of our newbie windows users. If you use windows and are in Australia, please check your box for viruses. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Is it possible to upgrade to Official without having to > > reinstall Mandrake as Official instead of Community? This also brings Sure. Just change your urpmi sources to an official mirrir, (make sure an update source is included) and then 'urpmi --auto-select' The main advantage of running offical instead of community is that it takes a lot less time to update your urpmi sources with official because you are only updating a much smaller hdlist from the updates dir instead of the hdlists for the whole distro. This is because the dist tree is static with official. I personnally like community, because I keep a local mirror, and when I do a clean install, all the updates are already installed. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Known problem with udev, there are several solutions floating around on the net. A google search or search of the archives here should yield quite a few hits on how to solve this. [newbie] Amarok beta2 is out
For anybody that enjoyed the packages I made for the Amarok 1.2 beta1 release, beta 2 is out, and I have made packages for 10.0 and 10.1. These required an update to taglib 1.3.1 which you'll need to grab too. There is a package with and a package without mysql support. You only will need one or the other. http://www.gkmweb.com/amarok Disclaimer: I can't support the app, I just made the packages for myself and I'm making them available for other people that want to take part in the beta testing but don't feel comfortable (or don't want to) installing from source. Test and report bugs to: http://bugs.kde.org, #amarok on freenode or send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Project homepage: http://amarok.kde.org -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? HTH Yeah, but community has been updated with all the packages that have hit the update tree, and official was forked from community, so they were the same when official was born. The only difference I am aware of is that the updates for offical are maintained in an updates dir, while they are placed in the dist tree for community, smae as cooker. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
