He's still barking at the wrong tree. The telephony site deals with
voice over ip, i.o.w. doing a tel. conversation over IP. Maybe we could
look at some classic dial-up pgms like minicom or seyon.

Hi,
Can you be a bit more specific by telling us which package contains the
"Internet Dialer". I can't find it on the cds, nor does rpmfind.net know
anything given 'dialer' as search string. I'm a bit apprehensive as
'Internet' has nothing to do with placing a simple phone call.
All I've got is :

RPMS1/cdialog-0.9a-7mdk.i586.rpm
RPMS1/gtkdialogs-1.0-3mdk.i586.rpm
RPMS2/wvdial-1.42-1mdk.i586.rpm
RPMS3/Xdialog-2.0.3-1mdk.i586.rpm

Thanks,
Guy.

Re: [newbie] ADSL Setup with Mandrake 8.1

2002-02-14 Thread Guy Zelck

Hi,

I've got the same modem as you but the routing is set up correctly.
I used drakconf to configure my setup.
I see in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts that ifup sets the default route
and ifup-ppp deletes any existing route prior to that. It's quite
complicated.
I'm also planning of setting up a fw using fwbuilder as a front-end. Do
you think it is possible to define the external interface in our case
since the address we have is not fixed and the interface, ppp0,
dissappears from time to time.
I haven't looked into it I must admit but if you have any experience...

This seems to work however my routing tables dont seem to be setup

When my machine starts it auto connects (everthing looks fine in

When I run route to see the routes setup it hangs until I ctrl-break.
If I then add a route to my DNS server I then get all these additional

Why don't you tell us what modem you have?
I have a Alcatel Speedtouch Home USB which works perfectly. But Mandrake
made some special arrangements to support this kind of modem so the
setup is not like the others.

[newbie] Postfix delivers mail for root to nobody, why?

2002-01-07 Thread Guy Zelck

Hi all,

I've got a Md8.1 setup with postfix (I used sendmail before) and
discovered I never had mail as root.
On doing some research I found the file /var/spool/mail/nobody
containing all my root mail from the beginning (cron job results).
I searched for a .forward file without luck. I moved the file nobody
elsewhere and re-tested mail to root. The file nobody was re-created.
How can I rectify this situation and make root's mail land in a file
called root like it ought to?
Strange also that root's mail went to nobody before I even started postfix!
Also, I always read postfix is so easy to configure; is there a gui that
comes with it?

See ya,

Guy.

[newbie] Compressed kernel modules, how?

2002-01-03 Thread Guy Zelck

Hi all,

I recently re-compiled my kernel. After the exercise I had all my
modules there but not like the modules as supplied by Mandrake which are
all gzipped.

What is the make directive that does this or is this done afterwards? I
used the classic 'make modules & make modules_install' which leaves the
modules uncompressed.

A good advise to those who want to compile: do a 'make mrproper' as 1st
step when using the Mandrake packaged kernel sources cause otherwise you
get the strangest errors.

Do you run by any chance a Virtual desktop sized rather big (Virtual

change the font sizes in kcontrol to sth. small.
I run X with the following settings and I had to reduce font sizes to 6

Hi Mark,

Well, if devfsd would have worked properly the devices would have been
created dynamically.
You should disable the devfsd alltogether as it fucks up in every way.
You do this by taking out the devfsd mention from your lilo.conf file.
After editing run 'lilo' off course.
Then reboot. If you use cmd MAKEDEV you can re-create the missing devices.

I have scsi & ide buses and devfsd fucked up big time for me too.
