Hi Newbie
 I use cable modem with @ home cable you need a network card I would opt for 
3 com pci card. You need to get the settings from installer 
 Network address 
  IP ADDRESS
  SUBNET MASK  
  GATEWAY/ROUTER
   HOST:
   DNS/ NAME SERVER 1
   DNS NAME SERVER 2
   DOMAIN   THIS WILL BE MAIL SERVER

  LM 8.1 WILL FIND YOUR NETWORK CARD AND YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO MUCH 
TROUBLE SETTING UP YOUR NETWORK.

 I use gerome with mdk 8.1 and after a while my mouse pointer turns into 
a watch how do i get rid it ? Very distracting

Dave i did default install and clicked on soffice still will not open  like 
linux but installing software will take a little time for me.
