Re: [newbie] 1024 cylnder
Thank you for your reply but i am affraid because my original message was not detailed enough, most of the advice you gave i had already performed. I used fips to repartition my 20gb hard disk into a 17 gb for windows and 3gb for linux. I then deleted this partition in disk druid and tried to add a linux native partition which it would not let me because it said something about themaximum boot size. It does however let me create a swap partition. I cannot create the two partions in fdisk. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Jas
[newbie] nis
to whom it may concern, I'm pretty much a newbie to linux but the people at my work want me to set up a machine as a nis server. A collegue of mine sent me the following message I installed the ypserv RPM for you. You can start at the point where you configure /etc/ypserv.conf. So, can someone provide me with detailed instructions as to how to do this? I looked at the how to and did not understand much of it. I would greatly appreciate any help you could offer. Thanks, Jas

[newbie] epson stylus color 740 and laptops
I just bought an epson stylus color 740 printer that i would like to get working under linux 6.1. I used printtool hit the add button. It said it found a device at lp0. I hit the select button and choose the epson one (i think it is the last one that says epson color). In that category, there is no 740, only a 600 inkjet and a 800 inkjet. I first choes 800, hit ok, and then tried to print a test page in all three formats and nothing happened. Same thing when i chose the 600. Any suggestions? Also, i am interested in getting a nice laptop for a low price. Maybe a pentium 3 450, 128 mb ram, 14 " display, 4-6x dvd, modem, ethernet card, 10gb hard disk. I am currently looking at the a company at www.pro-star.com. Does anybody have any other suggestions as to another company with better and/or cheaper laptops? Any help you could offer would greatly be appreciated. thanks, jas
[newbie] emu10k1
I have an SB Live sound card that i am trying to get running under linux. About a couple of weeks ago i downloaded emu10k1 but i have some qestions about some of the instructions it gives. How do I: 1) "unload all existing soundcard drivers, including soundcore?" (if this step requires compiling the kernel, i am going to need really detailed instructions because i would not even know where to begin :-) , if not, what else do i have to do?) 2) "remove all old soundcard references from /etc/conf.modules" (if this is the sound card i had during the install of linux do i have to perform this step, if so how?) 3) "know if my kernel is compiled with version information?" Thanks, Jas

[newbie] Lilo
First off, i apologize if you are reading this message for the second or even third time, but i keep getting an error reply saying that the mail was not delivered. To whom it may concern, I am running windows 98 on my machine with a 8 gb hard disk. I used fips to create a new partition (2 gb). Now my set up is 6gb and 2gb. I used disk druid to delte that partition and create two more the size of 1872 mb (linux native) and 128 mb (swap). I recently tried to install linux mandrake 6.1 but failed. When prompted if i would like to create a boot disk, i said yes but an error message came up that asked if wanted to go to the previous step, retry, or go into the install menu. I hit retry several times and used different floppies but i kept getting the same error. I decided to move on. when trying to set up lilo, i recieved the same error again, no matter what i set as the default os and no matter which partition i decided to set up lilo on (linux native or master boot record). Does any body have any suggestions? Thanks, jas

[newbie] sound and wine
I am a newbie to linux and i have two problems. For those of you who remember me, i finally got the lilo problem fixed, but when you solve one problem two more come up. 1) My sound card does not work under linux. i typed /usr/sbin/sndconfig and it probed for my sound card. It found "SB Live!" and you hit ok and it says "SB Live! is not supported" you hit ok and it exits. Note: when i installed linux using lnx4win the sound card worked but when i installe it the regular way i get the above problem. 2)I would like to know how to run wine. I typed wine /mnt/DOS_hda1/windows/calc.exe to see if i could run a windows app under linux (in this case the simple calculator program)and it brought up some error that said it can't find some ms dll file. Any suggestions? Any help you could offer would greatly be appreciated. Thank you, Jas
