[newbie] glibc Upgrades

2000-09-08 Thread Kumba

I've got Mandrake 7.0-i486 running, and I wanna
upgrade my glibc packages from 2.1.2-10 to 2.1.3-19,
or whatever the latest build is, and I can only find
rpm's for i586 class from Mandrake's site. Redhat
i386 RPMs don't work cause rpm says the 2.1.2-10mdk is
newer than 2.1.3-19 (which isn't right), and I don't
know if I should --force these to install. Attempts
to build an rpm from SRPM have failed miserably, cause
after about 10 hours of compiling, it dies suddenly
with the error of "fg: no job control", and I don't
wanna try the straight source compile cause I am told
it fairly difficult.

My box has the following:
1 Intel dx4-100 overdrive (47.99 bogomips)
20mb RAM
128kb external cache
1 5.24gb Maxtor harddrive
Keyboard and monitor optionally connected when needed
and a 8x CD-ROM drive + floppy
Runs Mandrake 7.0-i486 (Air)
Kernel 2.2.17

If anyone has any suggestions, lemme know, cause well,
I'm not a total newbie to linux, but I'm no
intermediate or expert either, so I'm hoping to
learn..

Re: [newbie] BUG: 6.1

In regards to the CD glitch you had:

I got that error when I used an unsuccessfully burned
copy of Mandrake (Adaptec choked on the CD-R during
the table of contents writing phase, I've since been
thru 3 CD-R's in trying to copy). So you might wanna
check the CD surface for any kind of scratches or
particles...

Just a thought..

Re: [newbie] LILO and the blasted 1024 cylinder limit

1999-10-18 Thread Kumba

Nope...brand new machine, Gateway PIII 500, 128 megs
of ram, 13.6 drive, riva tnt2 card w/ SB Live! Value
card, which I also hope to get working soon.. I just
wanna get Lilo to install some how that doesn't
involve damaging my windows 98 partition, or without
buying a new harddrive cause the smallest they get
around here is 13 gigs..

[newbie] LILO and the blasted 1024 cylinder limit

1999-10-18 Thread Kumba

I've just used Partition Mmagic to split up a 13.6 gig
drive into a few partitions to install Mandrake 6.1
on. However, I can only boot linux from floppy (which
takes 5-7 minutes), and not from LILO, cause lilo
can't install itself into the MBR due to a "1024
cylinder limit". Is there any way around this?...I've
read the how-to's, but can't find a simple, easy way
to pull this off.
