This is a site that lists modems that will work with Linux.  Some
will not, you know, as they are winmodems.

I should have clarified myself. I am not downloading my mail using
Netscape, but rather the e-mail program that comes with KDE. The icon is
located on my taskbar (panel at the bottom) and looks like a letter with a
big E next to it. When I was using Linux yesterday, I was in my mail program.

Do I have to use the floppy I made at the beginning and then use the CDROM?

[newbie] When on kppp, getting mail but not getting out

1999-04-23 Thread Linda & Mike

Hello Steve & everyone else,

On top of my regular problems with Linux, when I am in e-mail, I am able to
download all my mail, but the message I sent yesterday never made it to the
group. I am able to get onto Netscape, also. So what setting do you think
is not set right?

Also, if I should get really frustrated, what is the best way to uninstall
Mandrake and start again?

I also downloaded the 5.0 version of StarOffice and would very much like to

Re: [newbie] how to get apps on KDE desktop

1999-04-21 Thread Linda & Mike

Steve,

I appreciate your wanting to help. I feel at this time very frustrated
with Linux. I have Mandrake 5.3 installed and (hoping) that everything
installed is as it should be.
Anyway, I have a program called ProSplitter and the file name is:
splitv20x_tar.gz. It is currently on a floppy and the one thing that I do
know how to do is get it dropped onto my desktop. All this in KDE. It is
at this point that I am stopped.
I have noticed that a person can click on a filename on the desktop and it
unzips (or untars) at this point, but I suspect that this is not the way to
do the job, but if it were, what do I do next? Do I change to root and try
to find the new directory. I have clicked on the setup files, and for the
most part they come back with what I think is an error telling me that I
cannot do that on local something. I don't remember the wording. There
always seems to be more than one .setup file with different name
endings. How does one know which one to use to create the directory? Or
does unzipping the file create a directory? My husband and I have three
books on Linux and I just don't find what I need to learn this or I am not
understanding what I am looking at. BTW, I never understood all the
commands in DOS either. Was quite grateful for Windows at the time 5 years
ago. I really do want to understand what I am doing in Linux but I am very
confused by it all.

I wish that I was even as proficient as you to be able to install a

me not want to even use the OS. Linda

[newbie] Installing programs

1999-04-15 Thread Linda & Mike

Hi,

Just wondering if all program files have to be untarred in root or can they
be untarred in the user account if that is the only account that will use
the program, such as Star Office, I will be the only one using the program.

[newbie] Error when trying to mount cdrom

1999-04-06 Thread Linda & Mike

Today I tried to mount our cdrom drive. Here is the error it gave me:

Could not mount
file:/dev/cdrom and then something else that said something like this with
a bunch of symbols in between each word: Input/output error Amount... ou
must specify the file system type.

What does this mean? I just recently found out that our home user accounts
had been put into the wrong partition by my brother-in-law when he
installed Mandrake 5.3 for us, so over the phone from San Francisco he had
us move all the directories to another location. Now, I guess, the cdrom
did not go with everything else.

[newbie] I have a problem with KDE

1999-03-28 Thread Linda & Mike

Hi all,

I keep getting this box that comes up and says this:

It is titled: KFM Information
and it says: A new KDE version has been installed. The template files may
have changed.
Would you like to install the new ones?
and then a Yes box and a No box.

I keep answering No, but my user account is inoperable. Nothing is working
when I go to the terminal and press the box, nothing happens. When I go to
the K box and go to Internet, and then Kppp, nothing happens. What do you
think is wrong?

Now, if I go to root, everything works.

Any ideas?

Re: [newbie] Re:Help with installing files

1999-03-27 Thread Linda & Mike

Ok, here is one of them. First of all, I downloaded them while I was in
Windows98 and put them on a floppy disk. The name of the file is:
splitv20x_tar.gz.

I know that I have to go to the root user account, but then what? Mount the
floppy drive, and from that point on I don't know what to do. I have
downloaded instructions that just say to: tar -xzvf filename and that will just
open it up, and then you run: ./configure, then make and then make install. I
tried the first thing while in the command line on the terminal and nothing
happened because first I have to get the file from the floppy and into the
computer which I don't how to do that. So, you see, I am totally stumped and I
am not finding the information anywhere, so I will be very appreciative of your
help and make sure that I print out this information. Since my printer is
unusable in Linux, I have to do all my questions on Win98. I have a HP Deskjet
722c, and have already found out that it is handled like a winmodem. Bummer!!!

[newbie] Re:Help with installing files

1999-03-27 Thread Linda & Mike

Hi Everyone,

I'm Linda and I am almost brand new to Linux.

I have downloaded files off the Internet and I want to install them. I
need a step-by-step intro into what I do when I want to install.
For instance, I download the files while on my own user account. Now what
is the next step. All the instructions in the books seem to over-simplify
the steps and, I am probably missing something obvious, but they don't work.

Please help.

Linda

PS: BTW, I sent this message 2 days ago and never saw it come to the list,
so I guess this is a test to see if my mail is getting out, also.
