Re: [newbie] downloading

2000-08-29 Thread M Thompson

Vincent,

It sounds like you could use a download manager. Checkout Go!Zilla at
http://www.gozilla.com/. It is fantastic. Or

As a convenience to this list, I will burn MDK 7.1 onto two CD's at a cost
of $6.50 for my time, my CD-R media, and shipping costs.
If interested, just send me an E-mail requesting my mailing address.
I'm not trying to make a fortune or get rich. It seems like a waste to
download the iso images and just burn the 2-CD set for myself.

I hope this will save someone some time and expense,
Matt

Re: [newbie] Can I Ghost entire drive including Linux

Roman,

Norton Ghost will accomplish this task for you. I have a spare 1.5 GB drive
in my PC that I use to hold the image file. My other drive is an 18 GB
drive. Norton Ghost is able to compress the image file too.

Re: [newbie] Any comments on Ultra 66 on 7.0 or 7.1?

2000-07-01 Thread M Thompson

Janis,

Install Linux Mandrake 7.1! It will recognize your Promise Ultra66 card
perfectly.

To my knowledge, Promise only provides a boot diskette for RedHat 6.0. The
Promise boot diskette will *NOT* work with any version of Linux other than
RedHat 6.0. Do *NOT* use the Promise boot disk. The Promise company was
absolutely worthless in helping me install Linux onto a hard drive connected
to a Promise Ultra66 IDE controller card.

You can use any boot manager of your choice. Be sure to install Lilo/grub
to the first sector of the Linux partition. I'm currently using BootMagic
2.0, but XOSL is an even better graphical boot manager (www.xosl.org). The
NT boot manager will also work, but I haven't personally configured the NT
boot manager to work with Linux.

To enable the NT boot manager to work with Linux, I suggest first reading
the HOW-TO written specifically about it. As a second resort, you can pose
the question to the Mandrake mailing list.

Hope that helps,
Matt

I am also running a PCI Promise Ultra66 IDE Controller card. I had to feed

MDK 7.1 and the Promise Ultra66 finally got married. Installing Mandrake

Re: [newbie] Promise UDMA-66 problems solved?

FWIW, I installed MDK 7.1 onto a hard drive connected to a PCI Promise
Ultra66 IDE controller card and had *NO* promblems. Mandrake deserves a pat
on the back.

To install Caldera eDesktop 2.4 onto a HD connected to a Promise Ultra66 was
a bit complicated, so there is a Step-by-Step to walk a newbie through it
(http://www.linux.nf/stepbystep.htm)(click the "Ultra66" link and then click
the "Promise" link).

Hope that helps someone,

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.0-2 ... Is it really Kernel 2.2.14-15mdk?

2000-02-13 Thread M Thompson

Seve,

Which kernel source version does OSS want you to install?

I would:
1) run "make xconfig" and choose the option to save the configuration to
disk
2) break the symlink "/usr/src/linux"
3) download the kernel source that you need and uncompress it to a directory
named /usr/src/linux-
4) create a symlink from /usr/src/linux/ to /usr/src/linux-
5) try installing OSS with this new kernel source

BTW - If you need to recompile the kernel, you can load the backup
configuration from step #1

If I don't need Java or security, I use KFM. It's extremely quick and
lightweight. I end up using NS when I need Java or security (be sure to
adjust the fonts or it is very UGLY).

The Linux community shares your thoughts and is working on some browsers
that look very promising:
Mozilla (ie. Netscape 5)
Konqueror (a KDE browser that will implement Java and security as well as be
a file browser among other things)

Read about them on the internet.

Re: [newbie] IDE harddrive detection in 7.0 fails

2000-02-04 Thread M Thompson

Also...

If your HD is connected to an Ultra33 or Ultra66 IDE controller, you will
need to use a little magic to enable Linux to see the drive attached to this
controller.

Checkout the following URL if this applies to you:

Re: [newbie] Lilo >1024 Cyl & 64RAM limit

2000-02-03 Thread M Thompson

The BIOS CANNOT see beyond the 1024th cylinder. Therefore the boot code
must reside below the 1024th cylinder.

I suggest making a 20Mb Linux partition (that resides below the 1024th
cylinder) and mounting it as /boot during your Linux installation. This
insures that all Linux boot code lies below the 1024th cylinder.

Please see the following URL for a better explanation:
http://users.nf/linux/limits.htm

Re: [newbie] install problems

2000-02-03 Thread M Thompson

I recommend following Paul's suggestions. If you would prefer a GUI boot
manager instead of LILO, then read on:

When installing Linux, be sure to install LILO to the first sector on the
Linux partition (NOT the MBR).

To multi-boot Windows and Linux:
1) Backup your MBR (personally, I backup my MBR using "Ranish Partion
Manager 2.38")
2) Install and setup a boot manager (I recommend XOSL)

Some possible options for boot managers are:
A) XOSL (http://www.xosl.org)-The best GUI boot manager IMHO (freeware)
B) BootMagic (http://www.powerquest.com) A commercial GUI boot manager
C) LILO
D) Ranish Partition Manager (http://www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part/)-I
use it to backup my MBR, but I don't use it as a boot manager. (freeware)

[newbie] Anyone tried KisoCD? (better than X-CD-Roast?)

2000-02-02 Thread M Thompson

Hi All,

Has anyone tried KisoCD?

Description:"KisoCD is a CD-burning-frontend to cdrecord and mkisofs. Using
it, creating CDs which are more than a copy of your harddisk becomes fun.
You get a complete preview of your CD, do the work using drag'n'drop; it
nearly behaves like a filemanager. Of course you can burn on-the-fly or
create images before, just how you like it. In contrast to other frontends
you can very easily create multisession- and bootable CDs."

Re: [newbie] What does [PTBL] mean??

2000-02-02 Thread M Thompson

You have defenitely jumped onto the learning curve by conquering the ultra
66 card. CONGRATULATIONS!

I think [PTBL] equals "Partition Table."

To mount your Windows partition:
1) Type "fdisk -l" from a console to list the partitons
2) From the above command, identify the partition you want to mount (I will
refer to this partition as /dev/hdxy, but replace the "x" and "y" with the
actual letter and number shown from the "fdisk -l" output)
3) Type "cd /mnt" without the quotes
4) Type "mkdir windows" to create a new directory called /mnt/windows (this
will become your windows mount point very shortly)
5) Type "mount -t vfat /dev/hdxy /mnt/windows" (remember to replace the "x"
an "y" with the letter and number that matches your partition)
6) Now use any file explorer to view the contents of your /mnt/windows
directory. You should see the contents of your Windows partition.

You can use Linuxconf to make Linux automatically mount this partition every
time you start Linux, but I will let you attempt that yourself.

When performing the above steps, remember that Linux is "case sensitive"
(example: to Linux "mkdir" does not equal "MKDIR")

I'm not at my Linux box, so the above was from memory. Anyone, please
correct me if I made any errors.

Re: [newbie] URGENT! Windows partion has gone! (fwd)

I did not know that you had BootMagic.

Follow the instructions for backing up your MBR (a safety net is always a
good thing).

If you insist on BootMagic, then boot your PC using the BootMagic rescue
disk. Restore BootMagic and all is well! (If you didn't create a BootMagic
rescue disk, then use the boot disk that I instructed you to create in a
previous E-mail and boot your PC with it. Next, change to the BootMagic
directory on your Windows partition. Finally run the BootMagic executable
file. Once the BootMagic program is loaded, enable the option to load the
BootMagic IPL code to the MBR.)

Re: [newbie] URGENT! Windows partion has gone! (fwd)

2000-01-31 Thread M Thompson

I am writing as if you only have access to your Linux system. If you have
access to another Windows PC, you can accomplish the following tasks on your
Windows PC.

Format a diskette with the MSDOS (or VFAT) filesystem. Copy the following
files from your Windows partition to this disk: Command.com, IO.sys, and
Msdos.sys. Download and extract Ranish Partition Manager 2.38 onto this
diskette. Keep this disk in the drive and reboot the PC. Type "part" to
run Ranish Partition Manager. Choose the option to save your MBR to
diskette. Now you have your safety net!

Format another diskette with the MSDOS (or VFAT) filesystem. Copy the
following files from your Windows partition to this disk: Command.com,
IO.sys, and Msdos.sys. Download and extract the XOSL files onto this
diskette. Keep this disk in the drive and reboot the PC. Type "install" to
install XOSL. Reboot the PC and setup XOSL to boot both Windows and Linux.

Hi all,

I've installed Linux on a secondary drive (hdb#) but I can't boot it.

Possible points of interest:
1. I tried using two boot manager's to access the boot record without
success
a. PhysTechSoft
b. BootManager

2. The Linux drive is the slave in a hardware config that looks like this:

Motherboard---(ide)WIN98-(ide)-Linux

Why can't I boot Linux?? Any ideas??

Re: [newbie] First-time setup questions

2000-01-27 Thread M Thompson

2. You can follow Anthony's suggestion if you install LILO to the MBR. If
you chose to install LILO to the first sector of the Linux partition, then
you will need to install a boot manager to your MBR.

Some possible boot managers are:
A) XOSL (it is the best GUI boot manager I've ever seen. It's also free.
It also has a nice installation program.)
B) Boot Magic (this is the commercial one)
C) Ranish Partition Manager (this is a text based boot manager)

Before doing anything, be sure to backup the MBR!!!

Re: [newbie] Planning to buy one

2000-01-24 Thread M Thompson

Deepak,

Please forgive me for being so blunt earlier.

Checkout the following URL:
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/goldfeat.php3

The Linux Mandrake Gold Pack 2000 is apparently one step above the Linux
Mandrake Power Pack 7.0. I followed the above link and found a price tag of
$65.

It appears that MandrakeSoft is copying MacMillan...taking the GPL version,
adding support and additional software, and then calling it a different
name. As if things needed to get more complicated

Matt

Re: [newbie] True Type Fonts

2000-01-24 Thread M Thompson

Jeanette or anyone,

How does MDK 7.0 deal with fonts? Does it use TT fonts by default?

If you haven't guessed, I haven't yet installed MDK 7.0. I'm curious about
some of these aesthetic items. I'm waiting to hear from others before
starting the mighty download of the ISO and burning the CD.

Thanks Jeanette and others,

You'll have to talk to the folks over at MacMillan.

MacMillan took MDK 6.1, added some add'l software, applied shrink-wrap and
called it 6.5.

My lilo.conf file has the syntax looking a little different:

Re: [newbie] StarOffice can't access win98 partitions?

2000-01-23 Thread M Thompson

Somebody said the mount points for your Win98 partitions have to be all
lowercase. Example: use "/mnt/dos_hda1" instead of "/mnt/DOS_hda1"

I haven't tried it myself, so YMMV

HTH,

BTW - please let me know if that suggestion works. I hope to get more time
to spend on Linux and would appreciate your input.

I don't think that should be a problem. From my experience, the partition

I recommend Easy CD Creator. Lookup "iso" in the Easy CD Creator help file.
It should tell you exactly what to do.

Adaptec's website is very extensive. Use it if you need it. (Adaptec is

Partition 36.5GB HD (was Re: [newbie] Stupid questions)

2000-01-17 Thread M Thompson

Rodger,

When you partition your HD, be sure to setup a 20Mb partition that starts at
7.8GB from the beginning of the disk. The BIOS can only see up to the
1024th cylinder (approx 7.88GB from the beginning of the disk). The OS
allows the rest of the HD to be accessible. Mount this 20Mb partition as
/boot. The rest of the partitions are your call.

Also, you may need to read the Ultra-DMA mini- HOWTO.

Re: [newbie] modem Help!

2000-01-17 Thread M Thompson

My advice is to return it and purchase a 3COM/USR modem that comes with
Jumpers on it. (Or purchase an external modem. Supposedly 99.9% of all
external modems work with Linux.) With the jumpers you can set the COM
port. Then just boot up linux and setup KPPP with the COM port number and
your ISP information. It should work.

Re: [newbie] 1024 cylnder

2000-01-16 Thread M Thompson

For Linux, you must create a 20Mb partition that resides below the 7.88GB
mark on the HD. Make your Windows partition equal to 7.8GB in size.
Immediately after the 7.8GB Windows partion, create a small 20Mb partition.
The rest of the partitions are your choice. (I suggest splitting the
remaining 10GB evenly between Windows and Linux, but it's your call on this
one)

When installing Linux, be sure to mount the above 20Mb partition as /boot.
This procedure ensures that LILO resides below the 1024th cylinder boundry.

Re: [newbie] Floppy drive problems

2000-01-15 Thread M Thompson

First, is the floppy formatted VFAT, or ext2? Now, proceed:

1) at a console, type "mount -t VFAT /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy" (replace "VFAT"
with "ext2" if your floppy is formatted ext2)
2) now browse the /mnt/floppy directory and you should see all the files on
your floppy. If you see the files, then all worked well.

Re: [newbie] Cannot mount root device...

2000-01-14 Thread M Thompson

Dave,

I'm glad that you got Linux installed.

Try this...
When the boot prompt appears, press the tab key to see a list of bootable
images. One of the images should read, "Linux". Now type "Linux" followed
by your UDMA controller parameters. You need to repeat the exact same steps
that you used to successfully install Linux.

If you successfully boot into Linux, you can modify your /etc/lilo.conf file
to enter these parameters for you each time. It will save you the hassle of
typing in the parameters each time. Be careful when you modify this
file...it could leave your Linux OS non-bootable.

Kmail comes with Mandrake and is also a good program.

RE: [newbie] no valid devices for install

2000-01-13 Thread M Thompson

Checkout the following link:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Ultra-DMA.html

Browse the section titled offboard PCI controllers. Grab the resources of
your controller like they recommend. You can also grab a Linux boot disk
and type the command from there. The command is "cat /proc/pci" without the
quotes. (If you need a boot disk go to:http://www.toms.net/rb/). After
writing down the resources, boot from your Linux CD and type "linux
ide0=a,b+2 ide1=c,d+2" without the quotes. You might have to use ide2 and
ide3 instead of ide0 and ide1. I don't know you system as well as you.

Try the above and let me know if you can get Linux installed. If not, I'll
send you a personal E-mail with the name and E-mail of a person that has
linux installed on a system that has the same mobo as your system.

I'm using a Promise Ultra66 IDE controller, so I won't be able to offer too
much additional help.

What about a Linux-Mandrake Step-by-Step. Members of the mailing list could

When a question is posted to the Linux-Mandrake forum (Newbie or Expert)

Re: [newbie] acessing fat32 partitions

2000-01-09 Thread M Thompson

In a console:
1) type "fdisk -l" without the quotes (this will "list" your partitions)
2) identify your fat32 partition from the output of the previous command (it
will probably be hda1, but it could be something else) I'll assume it's
"hda1" but just replaces my references to "hda1" to the actual name
3) type "cd /mnt" without the quotes
4) type "md DOS_hda1"
5) type "mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/DOS_hda1"

Now, just navigate the "/mnt/DOS_hda1" directory to see the contents of your
fat32 drive. If this works, you can add an entry to your /etc/fstab file to
make your life easier the next time you want to mount your fat32 partition.

[newbie] test - is the Mandrake Newbie forum working?

2000-01-07 Thread M Thompson

Hi All.

My E-mail from the Mandrake Newbie forum has been nonexistant the last
couple days. Is the Mandrake Newbie list working for anyone else?

John, I sent you a BC just in case I accidentally got removed from the list.
Are you receiving mail from the list lately?

Thanks,
Matt

Re: [newbie] Seem to have some problems

2000-01-03 Thread M Thompson

Try reading the following:
http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO.html

It sounds like the ethernet card is hogging the resources. I have an AWE32
PnP ISA but I don't have a NIC. I simply ran sndconfig. I received a
message that I had to setup the soundcard resources manually. I clicked OK,
left the Mandrake defaults alone, clicked OK again, and had sound on my
system.

Follow John's suggestions first. After figuring which COM port you are
using, setup KPPP according to the following:
/dev/ttyS0 = COM1
/dev/ttyS1 = COM2
/dev/ttyS2 = COM3
/dev/ttyS3 = COM4

Re: [newbie] CD Writer

1999-12-30 Thread M Thompson

If you simply want to mount the drive to view the contents of a CD, you
don't even need to append anything to your lilo.conf file. However, if you
want to write to the drive, you will need to add the append statement to
your lilo.conf file that John mentioned.

If you simply want to mount and view the CD that's in your CD-RW drive:
1) first type "dmesg" to see which device it's using (I'll assume hdb)
2) "cd /mnt"
3) "mkdir cdrw" (this creates a directory called /mnt/cdrw)
4) "mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrw"
5) Now view the contents of the /mnt/cdrw directory and you should see the
contents of the CD that's in your CD-RW drive.

Re: [newbie] Suggestions

1999-12-25 Thread M Thompson

You have encountered the 1024th cylinder boundry. LILO and the initial
Linux boot files must reside below the 1024th cylinder (first 7.88GB of the
hard disk). The /boot directory contains these files. You should create a
small Linux partition (20Mb is plenty) and mount it as /boot. Create that
20Mb partition first so that it resides around the 6Gb mark. Checkout
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/install/ipartit.html#Linux for suggestions on
the rest of your partitions.

To reinstall (completely), just run the same installation process again
(just putting the boot.img disk in).

Re: [newbie] Hpt 366 support In mandrake 7?

1999-12-23 Thread M Thompson

FWIW - there is a kernel patch that can be applied to the stock 2.2.13
kernel that will enable the support. This patch cannot be applied to the
Mandrake 6.1 kernel source. If interested, you need to download the 2.2.13
kernel source from ftp://ftp.kernel.org and then apply the patch to it.

I know I was very vague, but feel free to locate and read the Ultra-DMA
mini-HOWTO. It is very well written. I tells where to download the patch
that I mentioned above.

YES, you can read/write to your Windows partition while running Linux. One
of my best compliments to Linux is that it supports up to 17 filesystems at
last count.

My Linux system automatically mounts my Windows partition. It appears that
your Windows partition is already mounted as /mnt/DOS_hdc1. Use Kexplorer
and navigate to the /mnt/DOS_hdc1 directory. You should be looking at all
your windows files. BINGO!

Re: [newbie] Uninstall? Please Help a Newbie!

1999-12-21 Thread M Thompson

It appears that you allowed LILO to modify your MBR when you first installed
Linux. It also appears that the MBR is not being adjusted when you install
NT.

If you backed up your MBR before installing linux, just put the original MBR
back on the drive. If you didn't keep a copy of the original MBR, then use
a DOS/Windows boot disk and type "fdisk /mbr" after booting off the
diskette.

[newbie] How do I modify /etc/fstab before booting Linux?

1999-12-19 Thread M Thompson

I used PartitionMagic and added an extra Linux partition before my existing
Linux partitions.

I believe I need to modify the /etc/fstab file to reflect this new setup.
Once I am able to modify the /etc/fstab file, I need to increment the device
names by one.

How do I modify /etc/fstab before booting Linux?

Thanks for all the help,
Matt

BTW - a very generous person gave me their copy of Redhat 6.1 Deluxe when
they purchased Redhat 6.1 Professional. I couldn't pass up the opportunity
to install Redhat 6.1, but the partition I made for it lies above the 1024
cylinder boundry. I therefore had to create an extra partition that resides
within the first 1024 cylinders on the disk. I'll then mount this new
partition as /boot so I can boot into Redhat.

Re: [newbie] System Sound

1999-12-16 Thread M Thompson

Did you enable the check box at the top left that says something to the
effect of "Use System Sounds?" You may have to logout of KDE before this
takes effect.

To enable the sound icon in the panel, first open up the mixer (found under
multimedia menu). There is an option under one of the menu options that
lets you add it to the tray when it is minimized.

Re: [newbie] Download Help

1999-12-09 Thread M Thompson

If you are currently using Windows, you could download Go!Zilla Download
Manager. It enables you to continue if your download gets interupted.

If you are downloading from Linux, there is a similar program call Caitoo.

[newbie] WinNT Explorer won't refresh the diskette

1999-12-09 Thread M Thompson

WARNING - This is way OT from Linux Mandrake. I don't know where else to
turn for help.

Recently I installed a Promise Ultra66 IDE controller and also a Quantum
Fireball Plus KA 18.1 GB hard drive (connected to the Promise Ultra66). A
couple weeks later, I installed an HP CD Writer Plus 9100i. After
installing this hardware, my Windows NT Explorer no longer refreshes the
diskette between disk changes. I have the same problems under Win95 Windows
Explorer. I do not have this problem under the Linux Mandrake OS.

Background Info:
IDE0 (master) = SONY CD-ROM
IDE0 (slave) =
IDE1 (master) = HP CD Writer Plus 9100i
IDE1 (slave) =
IDE2 (master) = Quantum Fireball Plus KA 18.1 GB hard drive
IDE2 (slave) =
IDE3 (master) = WD Caviar 1.6 GB hard drive
IDE3 (slave) =

Example:
Diskette1 contains 1 file called "file1"
Diskette2 contains 1 file called "file2"
If I put diskette1 in the drive and view the contents of the diskette thru
Windows NT Explorer it shows "file1" and I can then copy that file to the
hard drives or HP 9100i. If I eject diskette1 and insert diskette2, the
Windows NT Explorer still shows "file1". I hit F5 to refresh the Windows NT
Explorer, but the view does not change and show the "actual" contents of
diskette2. With diskette2 in the drive, I am mysteriously able to copy
"file1" from the diskette to the hard drives or HP 9100i. I can take the
diskettes out of the diskette drive and still mysteriously copy a file from
diskette1 to either the hard drives or HP 9100i.

Please help.

Thanks all,
Matt

BTW - My wife likes the Microsoft operating systems, so I cannot nuke them.
Those who have a significant other can probably relate.

Re: [newbie] Desktop Icons

Where is "TweakUI for KDE" when you need it ;-)

It would be nice to have a graphical program that really let's you tweak the
GUI to extremes.

Just my $.02,

[newbie] I need to setup a simple Linux dialin account

1999-12-07 Thread M Thompson

I want to jump on a Windows machine and dial in to my Linux box.

What's the easiest way to do this? I don't want anything real complicated.

Thanks in advance,

Re: [newbie] Installing Downloaded Files

1999-12-07 Thread M Thompson

It's not a weird question. Once you install the OS, you typically want to
install additional applications. I would probably think you were weird if
you were completely content with your OS and it's applications as it comes
"right off the shelf."

To answer your question, check out:
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/basics/index.html

It explains how to install applications that are packaged in either RPM or
tarball formats. An RPM file is vaguely similar to a Windows
self-extracting installation file. A tarball is vaguely similar to a DOS
zip file. An RPM is packaged to work with a particular Linux distribution.
All Redhat RPM files will also work on Linux Mandrake.

Matt

Re: [newbie] KPPP & Earthlink, part 2

Try searching the archives. I think I remember seeing something on this
subject. I think it worked if the programs were launched before KPPP was
launched. I think there was a solution mentioned in the archives.
