Yeah, I know that. But basically, if I succeed in installing my new kernel-2.4.18

[newbie] Error messages during shutting down

2002-01-11 Thread Mandrake Newbie

Hello everybody! =)

I'm currently using Mandrake 8.1 on Asus CUVR4X-C motherboard, Intel Pentium III 800
Mhz, 384 MB SDRAM and 20 GB Seagate Barraccuda 7200 RPM hard disk drive.

My problem started when I successfully installed kernel-2.4.16.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm in
my Mandrake 8.1 system. As most (if not all) of you know, Mandrake 8.1 has a default
kernel version of 2.4.8. Basically, I did upgrade my default kernel. I installed my
new kernel version using the command of:

# rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.16.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

Also, my partitions and filesystems are:

/boot - ext2fs
/usr - XFS
/home - XFS
/opt - XFS
/var - XFS
swap
/ - ext2fs

...and I also add lines in my LILO for my new kernel to boot-up.

Actually, I am encountering error messages during shutting down my system. Below are
the error messages that are displayed during shutdown:

/etc/rc0.d/S01halt: line -76: 5401 segmentation fault $*

What does the error messages mean? How will I get over it?

So far, I haven't encountered any problems yet using my new kernel 2.4.16.9 installed
except for the error messages during shutting down.

Thanks in advance for your help.

[newbie] Problem in Changing to Single User Mode (runlevel 1)

2001-12-02 Thread Mandrake Newbie

Hello, gurus!

I was trying to change from my default runlevel 5 to single user mode (runlevel 1)
using the command of:

# telinit 1

but I think, I hanged up. What could be the problem with this?

I am using Mandrake 8.1, default kernel 2.4.8.

BTW, I am planning to upgrade to kernel 2.4.13 (mdk.rpm) from speakeasy.rpmfind.net.
How do I upgrade on this? Do I still have to change from my default runlevel 5 to
single user mode (runlevel 1)? What is more appropriate rpm command in upgrading my
2.4.8 to 2.4.13 kernel, the rpm -ivh or rpm -Uvh ? If
I'll issue the command of:

# rpm -ivh or -Uvh

do I still need to configure or something or it will automatically set up?

Thanks for your help.

Well, it depends on how you configure your box. There's no such thing as "best"
distro.

That's actually a good suggestion but I don't think they will. Those packages that
you mentioned are not "Open Source" and basically, I don't think Sun, Borland, etc.
will just permit Mandrake without this so-called "partnership". Just like what Suse
and Oracle did.

>Many of the tools presented above are open source or
>could be easily included on Mandrake's cds distro.

I don't think so. As I've mentioned, those softwares are NOT Open Source, AFAIK.
Besides, as what I've said, it is not that easy to include those softwares in their
(Mandrake) next version 'cause it needs the permission of the companies' concerned.
If that's the case, Mandrake should include StarOffice also or probably OpenOffice.

You don't need to convert your Win boxes to Linux.

I assumed that your Win and Linux boxes are well-configured on their individual IP
addresses. In short they communicate each other. You just need to install NFS,

Hi there! =)

I'm just new to this mailing list and I hope you can help me with my problem.

Is there any Word Processor that can save output as PDF file? Shall we say, I will
make a document but I will save it as PDF file and can be viewed like xpdf or Adobe
Acrobat Reader.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance. =)

[newbie] Speedcom+ 56kbps internal fax/modem Conexant Chipset problem

2001-10-18 Thread Mandrake Newbie

Hello, everybody! =)

I just subscribe to this mailing list hoping that you could help me with my problem.
I just installed my first Linux Mandrake 8.1 dual booted with M$ Windows 98 last 2
weeks ago. I bought a Speedcom+ 56kbps PCI internal fax/modem Conexant Chipset and
I'm just wondering why I can't connect to the Internet.

Please help me with my problem. I hope you can give me a step by step instruction or
a how-to of this problem.

Thank you very much.

More power to you! =)
