[newbie] Konqueror won't start

2005-02-05 Thread Marc
I am using KDE with Mandrake Linux 10.1 and I have a similar configuration on
2 separate machines. On one of the machines every thing works fine however on
the second machine Konq wont start. If I enter the command
 kfmclient openProfile filemanagement
I get the error message
DCOPReply<>: cast to 'QCString' error

Doe's anyone here know what is causing this problem and how to troubleshoot or
repair it?

Thanks in advance

[newbie] Boot record

2004-11-05 Thread Marc
On a ML installation when it gets to the part about where to put the boot
record the first sector is one of the options. How would this affect how the
machine boots?
What would be the reason to use the root partision for the boot instead of
the first sector of the MBR or a floppy?

[newbie] Recovering lost data ?

2004-11-03 Thread Marc
I have installed ML in a machine that allready had XP installed on it. The XP
installation had some problems to say the least. It was 95% unusable. I was
hoping to install ML and use it to retrieve data from windows. I was able to
defragment XP and did manual partitioning When I installed ML.
The problem is that while doing the partitioning ML saw the windows
partition as Gray instead of the usual blue and did not detect the windows
installation. I went ahead and shrunk the windoze partition and gave it a
mount point of /mnt/windows. I did not format the windows partition.
I can no longer boot into windows and can not see any data on the windoze
partition while using ML.
Is there any way to retrieve the data that I think is probably still on the
windows partition ?

Thanks in advance

Marc

2 reasons
# 1 a MLS real estate web site that seems to do nothing but say that it only
works with Internet Exployter

#2 as a further troubleshooting measure in trying to solve my DSL problems
with my local ISP.

I have tried everything suggested by the folks here and LOTS of other things.
1 thing that crossed my mind is that perhaps they have a server with a virus
that is meant to screw up service for linux machines or perhaps something
from the evil empire installed in 1 of their servers that is meant to screw
up linux users. Just a WAG on my part. What the heck I have tried
everything else.

Thanks Derek but that still leaves tell tale evidence that I am using a

Does anyone here know how to modify the user agent ID in any of the popular

[newbie] ISP question Century Tell

2004-10-29 Thread Marc
Is any one else on the newbie list using Centurytel as a ISP with dsl service?
If so are you having problems with DSL and ML 10.1?
After ongoing problems for 2 weeks I am trying to track down if it is a local
or a wide spread problem. Everything works fine with older ML distros and
windoze but there are serious problems when using centurytel with ML 10.0
Due ti the fact I am unable to track down any intelligent life forms at
Century Tel I am trying to figure out if this is a local or a wide spread
problem in order to figure out who to ream at Centuryhell

Any other century customers here have any input on this?

Thanks

I just tried that and that made matters worse. I can no longer use a browser
for anything when I do I get a network error message but email still works
fine

I tried a freah install of ML 10.0.2 on a spare hard drive and everything
works great with it but I would still like to get things back on track with
10.1

[newbie] ML and slow DSL

2004-10-22 Thread Marc
This may be on the boarder line of off topic. For about the last week about
half of the web sites that I go to work normally and the other half have
about a half minute delay before a page starts to load. The slow ones are
always slow and the fast ones are always fast. Up until a week ago EVERYTHING
was really fast. I am on a high speed DSL connection.

Here is where it all gets strange. Everything is still fast when using
windoze. And strainger yet it is not just me the same thing is happening to
at least 10 other Mandrake users in my area. All of us are using ML 10.0, ML
10.0.2 or ML 10.1 amd all of us still have normal fast service when using
windoze. I don't know if other linux distros are affected.
Is anyone else here having similar problems with Century Tel?
Anyone here have any idea what may be going on or the cause of this problem?
A few of us have contacted the local ISP, Century Tel and they have no
answers.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or solutions

Keith I am almost sure that ether of the 2 modems that you mentioned will be
a problem and I suspect a problem that is almost impossible to solve.

If your ISP is using anything reasonably standard almost any modem that uses a
ethernet connection should work fine.

Just to be 100% sure that I understand correctly is he unable to boot into
ML or XP after the installation. Your email makes it sound like he is having
trouble booting into ML but from my personal experience booting into PX is
generally the problem.

I just went through that problem a month ago.

I am assuming that you want to burn CD's wityh the downloaded files.
If you are using Mandrake linux and have K3B installed when you click on a
ISO file it should automaticaly open in K3B if that does not work right click
the file and ckick ofen with and select K3B. K3B should automaticaly detect
it as a ISO file and make the correct adjustments to the process.
Make sure that you manually adjust the CD burning speed to 1/2 the burning
speed of your CD burner or 8X witch ever is less. SLOWER IS BETTER for
burning ISO's.
K3B also has a menu that you can scroll down after youn select a ISO file
and K3B opens. If you scroll down the menu you will find that K3B has run
MD5sums. Check to see that the output from that matches with the MD5sums
figure that was downloaded with the ISO images.
Needless to say if you used windoze to download things will be a bit
different but 1 of the windoze CD burning utilities should handle it 1 way or
another.

   Good luck
    Enjoy 10.1

[newbie] What happened to the boot loader options

In ML 9.x and before there used to be several options for how and where t6o
install the bootloader. First sector of the hard drive, to a floppy etc. I
just found that on 10.0.2 those options seem to br gone and I need them very
badly for a problem installation that I am working on.
Is there a way to get those bootloader options back?
What was the last mandrake release to have them? perhaps 9.2?

Been there, done that, yesterday. Here is the latest game plan. I am going
to use a floppy for the master boot record. If that works I may try it
putting the MBR on the root partison or perhaps creating a seperate partison
for the MBR. I cant remember what all the options for the MBR are at the end
of the ML install. Hell I never needed to . The defalt setting always worked
UNTIL NOW.
My best guess at this point is that maybe XP does not like sharing the first
sector of the Hard disk with anything else, juest a guess.
Thanks for your suggestions.

[newbie] Dual boot problems

2004-09-21 Thread Marc
I have been fighting with a dual boot installation for days. I give up!!! It's
time to ask you folks.
I just did a low level format of the Hard drive and then a fresh install of
win XP. Did a defrag, shut down right away and did a install of ML . I
shrunk the windows partision 50% and did the rest of the installation. All
went well. when I rebooted ML it worked great, as always. when I try to boot
to XP all get is a black screen with a flashing curser.
Anyone have any idea of what went wrong? Or how to fix it.

Thanks

I had similar problems with 10.0 and I think the problem may have also
been there on 9.1 and 9.2, can't remember for shure that was a while ago.

don't know if that will work for your son but it is so easy it is worth a

[newbie] Ya don't know ehat you got til its gone

2004-09-14 Thread Marc
I had ML 9.0 running dual boot with XP on a Mach speed mobo P4 2.5 ghz cpu and
a 90 GB IBM hitachi HDD. All was well and good. I just went to wipe out the
whole ML installation installation and replace it with ML 10.0.2 and it hangs
on formatting HDE7. I tried a ML 10.0 CD and it uung at the same point again
I next tried the same thing with ML 9.0 and all went well.
Anyone have any idea what the problem could be.

is it better to rather do it by hand, or to rather find a tool, hence the
reason I am asking if anyone can reccomend something for me ?

[newbie] OT: Hardware Issues

2004-07-29 Thread Marc Hultquist
Morning / Afternoon and evening everyone.

I just wanted to ask, my "play" machine at home, at the moment runs as a dual
booting system, with both windows XP Pro and MDK 10.0 Community, now it was
running fine up untill last night, I bought a processor and GFX card for the
machine, now when I put both in the machine, it wont send a signal to the
screen, however if I leave the new gfx card in the machine, and simply put
the old processor back into the machine, it works, although now I have kernel
panics in linux, and my windows xp has lovely "Blue Screens of death" ? The
only thing I can think of is that the machine has now got corrupted system
files ? Maybe when I put the new proc in ? The machine as I said is only a
play machine and therefore has a celeron processor in it, I put a new Celeron
D proc in, but as I noticed this wont work, but now if I put my old Celeron
standard 1.7Ghz chip back into the pc, it starts the screen fine, and sends a
signal and everything to the screen ?

The OS is not a problem as I have bought a new hdd for the machine and well it
was going to be replaced anyway so its not the biggest problem, the problem I
am now worried about is that I have in some way stuffed up my socked on my
MOBO by putting in a Celeron D chip as apposed to putting a normal Celeron
chip in ? Is this possible? They are both socket 478 chips, nothing wrong
there, I just dont think the D chip is compatible with my mobo ? But my well
main query though, even though its not the biggest train smash, is why all of
a sudden do I now get it that the OS's on the machine suddenly BOTH don't
work ?

Re: [newbie] Installation folder for Apache 2 ???

In-correct. By default apache2 installs its htdocs/ in the folder where
everything else is installed, I.E if when installing apache you do as follows
./configure --prefix=/apache/ < your apache will be installed in
obviously /apache/ and your htdocs will be in /apache/htdocs/ !

Obviously this can be changed, you just need to edit your httpd.conf file and
set the Document_Root= to where you want to put your files, but as is pointed
out above, most people put it in /var/www .

Ok I installed the module for 2.6.3-7:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# rpm -ql ltmodem_kernel-2.6.3.7mdk
/lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/kernel/drivers/char/ltmodem/lt_modem.ko.gz
/lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/kernel/drivers/char/ltmodem/lt_serial.ko.gz

and i copied it to the kernel dir:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# uname -a
Linux laptop 2.6.3-9mdk #1 Fri Apr 23 16:41:09 EDT 2004 i686 unknown unknown
GNU/Linux
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# cp
-a /lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/kernel/drivers/char/ltmodem
/lib/modules/2.6.3-9mdk/kernel/drivers/char/

Now I try to modprobe:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# modprobe lt_serial
FATAL: Module lt_serial not found.

[newbie] ltmodem

2004-07-24 Thread Marc Lijour
Hi

I have a Lucent Tech winmodem.
I used ltmodem rpm in the past, and it has to be combined with a kernel rpm.

I have not found a kernel rpm for 2.6.3-9 which is the latest.
Somebody has one?

If you are using KDE go to configure my desktop/ Login Manager, click on

I had that same problem with a ECS, Elite Group MOBO that I am using now. I
Tried switching cables but that did not help a bit. After resetting the BIOS
several times and switching cables several times I finnially found that IDE 0
would not detect a HDD but would detect a CD or DVD just fine. IDE 1 was able
to detect any drive that I put on it. Solution I just ended up using IDE 1
for the HDD and everything worked fine. About 6 months ago I had to replace
the CD burner and while I( had the box open I thought that I would get to the
bottom of the problem once in for all. Again after replaceing cables ,
changing jumpers on the HDD changing drive positions from the end of the
cable to the center of the cable and anything else that I could think of I
still had the same results IDE 0 WILL NOT detect a HDD but detects any CD or
DVD just fine. I even tried switching brands of hard drives. I am still
running the machine with the HDD on IDE 1 instead of IDE0 and all is still
working fine. I can't understand how this is possible but never the less that
is what is happening.
This may or may not apply to the MOBO that you are using but it is worth a
try.

A mutex is a programming artefact that counts the access to a resource (eg.
printer, video card). Obviously no 2 papers can be printed at the same time,
nor 2 song played at the same time, etc. A mutex is like a guard at the entry
of a bar and that lets in only a fixed number of persons (processes or
programs).

When a program is still using a device, the guard (mutex) cannot be removed
from the door. That is basically what's happening here with you.

2004-06-11 Thread Marc Hultquist
It depends on what windows you have installed, if its a windows that uses a
fat32 file system then you are fine, however if you are using a windows that
uses ntfs such as XP or 2000 etc, you wont really be able to do what you
want, as Linux only has read support for ntfs, while there is write
support(in Debian, not sure about others), it is listed as *testing* and is
not reccomended ! I.E use windows 98 ;-)

I have to admit, posting in the Outlook format is annoying. Maybe as was
reccomended use the Mozilla mail client for windows.

If you are trying to link to your linux htdocs folder when in windows ? That
is going to be a problem, the only way I know would to be or to use vmware,
and well I don't think its possible to get vmware for free. And well I am NOT
someone to use illegal software. If I am mistaken, but I understand it that
you want to link from within windows to your htdocs in linux.. ? Maybe
try searching freshmeat.net or sourceforge.net ?

Re: [newbie] Where is everybody's (users) htdocs (www)

2004-06-08 Thread Marc Hultquist
If you are referring to a users personal html directory, it is not made
automatically, you have to (the user) make a directory called public_html/ in
their home directory. Once this is done, you will just have to enter the
following into a browser to view the users specific page,
www.server.tld/~username

Thats how I understand your question.

Also check the information about and install the lisa daemon.
In konqueror you can browse your network, click on the machine identified by
IP and see the services they offer, be that fish, http, smb or other.

Go to Drakconf to configure lisa.

OOo would get VERY slow
Removing the hiden .openoffice in the home directory solved the problem (check

Re: [newbie] missing httpd

2004-06-02 Thread Marc Hultquist
I know this is a bad solution to your problem, but at the end its the only way
I could get around the exact same issue you are having, I basically
uninstalled apache + php using mdk's package manager, I then downloaded
apache 1.3.31 and php 5.0.0RC2, downloaded, compiled from source and well yes
it worked, I then had to simply create a symlink
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root26 May 25 12:09 apache-> /conf/apache/bin/apachectl

And away I went, it all works perfectly, and well since then I have not had a
single issue! So ya, this was all done on my MDK 10.0 CE machine, which is a
laptop, and well it all worked perfectly.

Anyway, time to go home, oh the symlink, it will be in /etc/init.d/

[newbie] SiS 7012 onboard sound with MDK10ce and a Laptop

Does anyone have any sudgestions as to how I should get my sound card
working ? One thing I noticed is that when I upgraded from 9.2 to 10.0 it
worked(didnt work in 9.2) but then I had or was forced to do a fresh install,
and well I lost the config.

I have now tried for a great deal of time to get it working, I tried all the
reccomended drivers, alsa, etc and yet still nothing seems to work, when
Linux installs it picks up my sound card fine, i know its picking up the
correct module

Any ideas ? I have tried to fiddle with the settings within xmms for example,
but to no avail :\ Kinda just one of those things I wish would work but it

Re: [newbie] Virus scanner for linux (no I havenn't lost my mind)

2004-05-26 Thread Marc
Well from a commercial point of view.
1. www.sophos.com has a Linux anti virus client, its easy enough to install as
long as you have glibc installed, well an up to date version that is. The
linux .tar.gz file(s) are all on the cd's and I can reccomend it, as I use it
personally at work, and it works like a dream.

2. www.drweb.ru is a Linux based virus scanner, I have not used it yet so I
cannot vouch for its reliability, however it is mentioned during the MDK 10
CE install process and therefore I am led to believe that it cannot be all
that bad? I am planning to set it up and run some tests with it.

But in all honesty if you have access to a legal copy of sophos, then I would
reccomend it over anything else. We have never had a single issue with it to
this day, and we have been using it for quite some time now !

I also have yet to get my iPod to work with Linux. GTKPod always crashes, so
I've tried GNUPod, but I don't think it works with gen3s.

It seems looking for something in initrd.
You could try to make a new initrd with mkinitrd (do a "man mkinitrd" to read
what it is dealing with) or the Mandrake boot wizard(?).

[newbie] SAMBA and NetBIOS names

2004-05-21 Thread Marc Lijour
Hi

I used to have Mandrake 9.2 machines on the (windows) network and it was fine
to ping the windows machines by their netbios names, something that I came to
enjoy!

I do not know how the network is set up. I assume DNS is used to keep track of
machines' names... The only thing I know is that Linux was able to use their
names in ping, ssh and others (like the cups wizard!).

I moved to Mandrake10Official, and I came to realize that the name resolution
is not working anymore. I dont know what has been changed, and after looking
closely to smb.conf, resolv.conf, nsswitch.conf, winbind and trying to enable
the machine as domain master, wins server, etc.. nothing seem to solve my
problem.

What I can do:
use nmblookup machine name resolves the IP correctly

What I cannot do:
ssh machine_name, ping machine, etc... does not work anymore.

Can somebody point me to some readings or, even better, a solution?

Thanks.,
marc

[newbie] OpenLDAP slapd.conf file missing in MDK10CE ?

2004-05-20 Thread Marc Hultquist
HEy

Well basically I have been toying with OpenLDAP on a rh7.3 machine, everything
was fine, now what I am hoping or actually what i HAVE todo, is setup a
OpenLDAP machine which auths users for both mail and a whole range of
services. Basically what I DONT understand, is that in MDK10CE there is no
slapd.conf file? Should I configure it myself(I.E Create it from scratch?) Or
should I re-install OpenLDAP... ? Its the default Install that comes with MDK
at the first install !

Please if anyone could shed some light on my situation ? I really need to get
this working, purely because its been annoying me the entire week !

Heres my Version of OpenLDAP if it helps.

I have to agree with other replies on the list.

I would basically for a simple setup do as follows:
/ - Root Partition
/home -Home Direcroties
/swap -Rule of thumb, your swap partition is twice the size of your ram, of
course it can be bigger.

You want to install both MDK and Fedora on 1 6 Gig harddrive? I don't know how
others feel, but I personally feel that you are pushing the limits here in
terms of space :\ Last time I tried fedora on a development machine, it took
up a decent amount of space, and well I just don't think I would have been

It is probably installed. You sound new to ML so I will try to make the
reply detailed.
I assume that you are using KDE if so this should be the easy way to find
Mandrake Control Center.
Click the star icon in the bottom left corner of the screen and go to systen
then to configuration and then to configure your computer. You will be
prompted for a root password. Enter the password and you will then be in
Mandrake Control Center.

I use the same config.
My entry:

You should definitely check twice, is it really FAT32?

[newbie] urpmi ?

2004-05-12 Thread Marc Hultquist
Morning

I was just reading up and trying to get urpmi to work properly.. But I cant
seem to, I am very familiar with apt-get but I use Debian purely in a server
enviroment, and I am now trying to get urpmi to work for my laptop I
could obviously set up apt-get on a mdk box(I imagine so since it is possible
under redhat), however, I would prefer to stay with the tools mdk comes with.

Now what I would like to know.
1. How do I tell urpmi to go around my proxy? And if I cant do this how would
I get urpmi to authenticate ? I could always do as follows
export http_proxy="http://user:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:port/"
but that does not seem to allow urpmi to authenticate :\
2. A list of mirrors, I found a mirror file generator on the net once, and I
told it what I wanted, and well as s expected, it generated the mirrors, I
pasted them into my /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg file, but then it wont allow me to
download the updates, I imagine its something todo with my proxy server here
at work ?

If anyone can help me here, I would really appretiate it !

Kind Regards

The first step could be to check what kind of system your machine is using:
APM or ACPI.

Issue dmesg
and more /var/log/messages to see what the kernel says at boot and check for
any APM or ACPI messages.

If I remember you can enable ACPI in DrakConf (the MCC) with the boot applet.
