[newbie] Users

2002-05-21 Thread Mark Lucas

I hope this isn't too basic a question!

I've been running a Mandrake server on my network for nearly a year now and
it is great. Currently all network clients are running some flavour of
Windows. I would like to begin to migrate clients to Linux but the first
problem is how to validate user logins etc. from the server. I have set up a
Linux client but I can see no obvious way of obtaining user authentication
from my server. I need this so that:
1.When I mount NFS shares the perm's operate correctly.
2.I only need to maintain one user database for the entire network.
3.It seems a sensible way for things to work!

Thanks,

Mark

Re: [newbie] Help I Can't log in!!!

2002-05-05 Thread Mark Lucas

Thanks, but this hasn't fixed it I'm afraid.

I've discovered that I can log in if I startup in 'failsafe' mode (that's
something I suppose!) but not if I startup normally.

I can't log in as *any* user, not even root!

Any more suggestions from anyone?

Re: [newbie] Help I Can't log in!!!

2002-05-04 Thread Mark Lucas

Thanks for the help, I'll give this a try.

I don't think the problem is actually to do with authentication. The system
logs suggest that the authentication is OK. The problem is in trying to set
up a console session over SSH or locally. SSH says it connects OK but the
server closes the session immediately. I can find no log information on the
closure which is a pain in the butt!

It's along story how I got here:
1. I wanted to install horde/imp to setup a web email system,
2. The needed PHP4 with certain options in Apache,
3. I recompiled apache with DSO enabled,
4. I tried to set up PHP4 in apache, everything compiled OK but the DSO
module wouldn't load, it complained about a PAM library,
5. I found I needed to install PAM-devel tools to make the relevant library
available,
6. I couldn't find pam-devel as a tar ball but thought if I installed the
latest PAM tar I would be able to extract the relevant libraries.

Somewhere along the line it all failed and I got messed up!

Re: [newbie] Linux machine in an NT environment

2002-02-22 Thread Mark Lucas

You need to set up SAMBA, your Linux box will then appear on your NT network
as an NT4 box. You can even setup samba to make the Linux box your PDC. It's
really quite straight forward and pretty cool when you get it all going.

Check out www.samba.org

Re: [newbie] Samba Question

Another thing to check is the use of plain text vs encrypted passwords.
Samba can be configured for either. I recall that the default for Samba and
the default for Windows may be different.

Re: [newbie] internet monitoring

2002-01-25 Thread Mark Lucas

The simplest way I can think of to achieve this is to use squid (proxy
server) and squidGuard. You can set Squid up as a transparent proxy so that
is automatically intercepts all calls on port 80. Squid Guard is very
configurable and can block/allow site by user, time or ip address. You can
even set squid to validate users from your SMB user database if you're using
SMB.

The best thing about it is that it's free and it works brilliantly!

I have been downloading, compiling and installing sources - new kernel,

When does my Mandrake 8.0 distro cease to be Mandrake and become a 'generic'

[newbie] Mail

2001-12-07 Thread Mark Lucas

I've managed to set up a very successful email server using fetchmail to
access my ISP, sendmail to distribute mail and UW-imapd to allow remote
access (both pop3 and imap). What I would now like to do is filter the mail
that arrives into folders ie. all the mail from this list to my 'Mandrake'
folder. I can do this with POP3 becasue it operates on the client side. But
I can't manage to sort mail on the server side into imap folders. I think
this should be possible using procmail?

Currently all mail is stored in /var/spool/mail/$user, each user is
allocated a single large file that contains all mail and folders (I think).
where do I put .procmail recipes for each user?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I really want to migrate to a
complete imap implementation.

Thanks,

Mark

[newbie] Postfix

2001-12-01 Thread Mark Lucas

Can anyone tell me how I can get Postfix to send my mail properly.

I have added the name of my ISP SMTP server. My internet connection is via
an ISDN router on my network.

What I would like to do is get Postfix to send mail (assuming it has some
queued) every hour or so. Also it would be good if I could configure it to
send mail immediately if a high priority email is to be sent.

I am using Outlook Express on a W2K machine as my email client.

Thanks for this, it's fantastic! I can control any machine on my network as

One question. When I log into my Linux server all I get is a grey screen. Do
I need to tell VNC somewhere to start KDE/Gnome when I log in? If so how do
I do it?

Re: [newbie] Browsing windows peer2peer is possibel?

2001-06-27 Thread Mark Lucas

If I've understood your requirements correctly you need to use SAMBA.
You can configure this via Linuxconf/Webmin/editing the smb.conf file. Once
it's setup correctly and working then you can use smbclient to browse
windows shares on the Linux box.

Plenty of people on this list can help you setting up SAMBA if you have any
difficulty.

Hi all

This may be a stupid question but is it possible to browse windows shares in
peer 2 peer LAN?
(I have just installed LM8 (1st time) on my box which is connected to a
windoze dominated p2p LAN)
I tried Configuring LISA but it keeps telling me that it isn't configured
and Lanbrowsing
still doesn't work.

Any suggestions are appreciated,

Re: [newbie] Scanner

It's a parallel port scanner and the SANE website says that there it is
unlikely ever to be supported.

Win4Lin or vmware sound like they might do the trick though. I have no
requirement to access the scanner from Linux only from the Windows machines.

How do Win4Lin and vmware work and where do I get them?

[newbie] SAMBA and CUPS

2001-06-15 Thread Mark Lucas

Just upgraded from LM7.0 to LM8.0 (reinstalled).
My Linux box is a server to win98 and W2k clients so I have setup SAMBA. All
worked well under LM7.0 but under 8.0 I cannot get my printer to work. In
LM7 I used printtools to configure the printer, this is no longer available
in 8.0 (I don't think) so I used CUPS, which seems vastly superior anyway.
The question is how do I get SAMBA to see a CUPS configured printer.

Thanks for the help on this. I've now got Webmin up and running.

The next problem is installing MySQL server. I've downloaded the .RPM file
and attempted to install it as I did with Webmin and all goes very well
until near the end when it's unpacking the archive at 79% unpacked I get the
message 'cpio: bad magic'. What on earth does that mean? I thought it might
be a corrupted archive but I've downloaded it twice from different mirrors
and got the same message. The archive file is called
MySQL-3.23.38-1.i386.rpm and I am running Mandrake 7.0 on a Cyrix 686 p200
with 32Mg RAM.

Any ideas?

[newbie] SAMBA Create Mode

2001-04-19 Thread Mark Lucas

I want to set Samba to set the permission of created files and directories
to rxwrxw--- so I set the 'create mode' option to 0770 but that seems to
create files with rxw--. Am I missing something? Is the create mask in
Samba the same as the permissions mask used in the CHMOD command? They seem
to be behaving differently.

Any suggestions?
