Hi,
I remember playing DVDs on a 466Mhz Celeron with a 4MB Matrox Millenium.
I suppose it sould at least play (if not smooth) on your Machine.

I'm not sure this is true, Joe. My Matrox card has only basic drivers and can

[newbie] partition

2005-01-16 Thread Martin Hardie
Hi

other than my unasnwered kword problem ... what is the ebst way to resize a
partition and make another one?

I have parted and started it up and got this message:

(snip: GPL junk)

Using /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc
Error: The partition table on /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc is
inconsistent. There are many reasons why this might be the case. However,
the
most likely reason is that Linux detected the BIOS geometry for
/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc incorrectly. GNU Parted suspects the
real
geometry should be 4870/255/63 (not 77622/16/63). You should check with your
BIOS first, as this may not be correct. You can inform Linux by adding the
parameter ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc=4870,255,63 to the command line.
See
the LILO or GRUB documentation for more information. If you think Parted's
suggested geometry is correct, you may select Ignore to continue (and fix
Linux
later). Otherwise, select Cancel (and fix Linux and/or the BIOS now).
Ignore/Cancel?

is using parted the best way or is there a simple safe alternative?

I want to copy from pdf files ... i recall that in Abode Acrobat I could do
this sometimes but with KGhostView I cannot at all. Are there and pdf

a way to save as into another format?

I see that I can download a linux version of acrobat but if i can get around
that it would be nice.

The list of Pdf programs on urpmi goes like this (it might help someone
recognise one that is useful)

LePatriarche-pdf

 information/experiences/reports on Tsunami at bytesforall.net

Hi group, in light of the interest in post-Tsunami disaster mitigation
projects, just so that it is on record, the SEANET (South East Asia Network
of Amatuer Radio Operators) meets on HF Frequency 14.320 MHz +/- QRM every
day at 1200Z (1200 GMT, 1800 Bangladesh) for many years now on USB - Upper
Side Band. The purpose of the network is to share first medical
traffic/civil emergency traffic and the net controller usually rotates the
discussion with all the countries that have access to the range of the HF
signal, typically from West Asia through to East Asia and the Pacific in a
very wide circle as appropriate to the radio wave propogation. In 30 minutes
the net controller canvasses all regions and asks for medical/emergency
traffic and if there is none, any other traffic (messages) for operators in
other countries. There is no prior requirement to participate, nor is it
obligatory - and it is really for the enthuisasts at this point more than
any other use. However it is open as per regulatory laws worldwide to
Licensed radio amateur operators - anywhere.

Now, this may sound antiquated in the era of the internet, but is very very
appropriate for disaster mitigation networks where you know for sure,
absolutely sure, double sure, that the radio network is working fine and will
work on the day that youwill need it, it only requires a 12V cell battery to
power up a radio transmitter/receiver in a manner to reach thousands' of
miles away your party who can send help or send messages.

I have participated before in such efforts, sadly this time am unable to do
so due to other issue - and it takes time and efforts on a purely volunteer
basis in order to reach out and help someone. There are thousands of radio
amateurs with sets around Asia - Pacific, and they need to be encouraged to
help out, and for those who still have connectivity to the 'net, they can
act as a 'bridge' between civil and commercial and emergency worlds.

However, it also requires planning in advance to be really effective, if you
have lost battery power, and won't get back your mains electricity for a few
days - you may end up being dead yourself. So if you permit an emergency task
force kit to be setup so which can be AIRLIFTED, they can have a remote power
pack, transceiver kit and a emergency communications handbook in order to
send coded e-mail messages and act as a controller which can take on the
civil emergencies coordination role - you will need training to use this
stuff, and you will have to have lists of appropriate license holders who
are registered volunteers with proper mindset to help out.

Friends:

A former MSSRF knowledge centre volunteer, Mr Vijayakumar of Nallavadu (a
coastal village in Pondicherry), did a wonderful thing. He received some
training with the help of MSSRF(as a village knowledge centre volunteer) and
now lives and works in Singapore. As soon as the tsunami reached Singapore
and he came to know that it was moving towards India, he called people at
Nallavadu by telphone and alerted them. People living in huts close to the
shore moved out immediately. Not a single life was lost in this village. Our
heart felt and grateful thanks to Mr Vijaykumar.

Here is the latest news release on the tsunami tragedy.

Re: [newbie] Any 'Wine' expert out there?

2004-12-26 Thread Martin
a first question on Wine -

do i just install the windows programs i want into a folder in eg my home
directory and then when starting wine in my shell point it there?

I have been confused about this simple little point to start with!!

will most programs using windows code work or only those "supported" with a
build of some type? I would like to run my Polar heart arte Monitor, my
Printer (HP Laserjet 1000) and my digital camera with Wine if possible.

Re: [newbie] digikam Sony P73 set up

2004-12-13 Thread Martin Hardie
Hi All

I am still struggling with this digikam thing. When i set up the camera as the
usb mass storage and open the window it says it is conencted but nothing
appears.

I hav tried this:> tail -f /var/log/messages

and nothing appears when i plug and unplug the usb.

If i try and mount /mnt/camera - i get a mesage bo such block device (or
something similar)

I friend from chatjunkies #linuxhelp tried to help me by looking about ... he
ran

  203 lsmod
  204 modprobe ide-scsi sd_mod sg vfat
  205 modprobe usb-ohci
  206 dmesg | grep scsi
  207 modprobe ide-scsi
  208 modprobe sd_mod
  209 modprobe sg
  210 modprobe vfat
  211 modprobe usb-ohci
  212 modprobe usb-ohci
  213 modprobe usb-uhci
  214 modprobe modprobe usb-storage
  215 modprobe usb-storage

all which showed no results

I am wondering if this is a USB problem i have

I also looked at the cameras supported by my version gphoto2 - it does not
list usb mass storage - I thought it should as I understod that digikam "ran
on top of" gphoto2

Has anyone got any ideas

At the moment I have to download photos on my windows partition and then copy
them across.

Thanks

Martin

[newbie] Re: Wifi

2004-12-02 Thread Martin Hardie
Hi

I have just installed M 10. I am heading to Mozambique soon and when i get
there I want to set up a wifi network in our apartment.

We have two laptops a toshiba and a compaq both running windows xp (the
toshiba is mine and old and small - i dont know if i could put mdrake on it
in a partition).

Anyway before I go I want to be the gear I need - routers an other stuff.

Can people suggest what models and items I need that will work well with M 10?

Once I have done that I want to get my laptop running here without problems so
that i am confident the other will work when i get to mozambique.

Once I have the gear how do I start the proces of setting the network up?

Will M 10 do the job or should i upgrade?

Thanks

Martin

p.s. I still havnt got my camera going ... but I will come back to that when i
have the time to play with it.

[newbie] digikam Sony P73 set up

2004-11-30 Thread Martin Hardie
Hi

I have just migrated from RH9 to Mandrake 10. Now at least I can install
digikam!! I am having trouble setting up my camera, a SonyP73.

I have selected it as a mass storage usb as it is not listed as a supported
camera
I have made a /mnt/camera
but I dont think the fstab setting I found in the digikam handbooks is the
right one as I dont have a sda1 on my system

these are the instructions i had but althoug the camera says it is connected i
cant see anything:

Make a directory where you can mount the camera:
 mkdir /mnt/camera; chmod 666 /mnt/camera
Try mounting the camera now:
 mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera
If no errors show up, then you have performed all the steps correctly. To
verify everything is right, point you file manager to /mnt/camera and you
should be able to see the folder/pictures on the camera
Add an entry to /etc/fstab for the mount point:
 /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera auto defaults,user,noauto 0 0

If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate them

Thanks
Martin

This sounds like you didn't install the firmware properly. For 10.1 you need
the firmware version 0.54. Once that was installed in the right place, I
could go past the point of choosing between "manual" or "automatic" and
properly set up the device. However with the version 0.54 (wich is the one
included in 10.1 Community) i could not get encyption to work, I had to
upgrade to 0.55.

I didn't get the ipw2100 driver version 0.54 to work with encryption. 0.54
is the version included with 10.1 CE.
However by uninstalling the 0.54 completely from the kernel and installing
0.55 i got encryption working.

Be carefull however als 0.55 needs a different firmware than 0.54

Ahem.
Can anyone suggest a PDF viewer which is preferably GTK2 but allows one to
print, unlike gpdf (shouldn't this be a standard feature?!).
KGhostView does a decent job with scrolling, and will print. It's not
GTK2, but as long as you have kde installed, you should be able to run
it from gnome (assuming that's what you're using).

I don't know of any other GTK2 apps, aside from gpdf (my favorite for
reading too)

Mozilla Thunderbird.I'm pretty sure if you leave the mail on the

[newbie] Multiple monitor setup

2004-07-10 Thread Martin Foster
In my Linux box I have 2 graphics cards:
1. nVidia RIVA TNT2 (AGP)
2. 3dfx Voodoo Banshee (PCI)
I have seperate monitors plugged into each graphics card, the idea being
to use MDK 10's multiple monitor support. I've twiddled and fiddled with
the setup and I just cannot get both monitors to work at the same time.
Can some kind soul give me clear concise instructions how to set this up.

Thanks in advance .

Why are you using "1470" in front of your ISP's phone number?
Judging by your email address, your ISP is FreeServe. When I had an
account with them, it was unnecessary to use "1470".
Freeserve is now Wanadoo - or, judging by their service, Wanadon't!
I use the same number for dialup, and queried this with them - they
said the 1470 is an essential part of their dialup number, or I'd
get charged for the call by BT!

H, here's the result of a search for "1470" on BeeTee's Web site:
"A customer with Permanent Number Withhold on their line can release
their number on a per call basis by dialling 1470 before dialling the
number of the person they would like to call. This means that the
person they are calling will be able to see the caller's number on
Caller Display or be told it through the free 1471 service."
Heres wanadoo's technical support reply to my email last night,
---
Dear John,
Thank you for your email.
The 1470 is only needed if your caller identity is witheld - it usually
will not cause any problem whether the number is witheld or not.
If you have any further queries then please do not hesitate to get in
contact with us again.

Never would of thought it.
But there it is.
and so you think I should remove 1470 then ?
I don't see any harm in removing it.
However, I don't think that's what causing the problems.
Have you had a look at my other suggestions yet?

Not sure of what kppp prints since I don't use it, but V90 and older
modems use the Hayes command set (i.e. AT commands), you can find
explanation for example here:

Much obliged Raffaele, that was what I'm looking for, though I still have
a few lines unexplained, this is what I'm getting after a particular
recurrence like this, kppp logs on and emails download,
then halfway through the process my ISP seems to cut me off,
I doubt if it's your ISP that's cutting you off, it's more than likely
that your modem's timing out.

this causes kppp to redial with this error message,
It's not actually an error message, it's a report generated by the "&V1"
command.

What modem is it?
ATZ
OK
AT &F1 &V1
Try either "&F" or "&F2" instead of "&F1".
Drop the "&V1" altogether.
The "&V1" command isn't designed to be included in an init string, it's
designed to be used after the connection has terminated to generate a
report such as you have below:

NO CARRIER
Question is why no carrier ?
At this point in time, sorry, dunno.
See my suggestions at the end.
Immediately I redial she logs on as usual.
This has now become a pattern.
I don't understand the scale of report in the "F's" and the numbers,
like Line QUALITY.. 255, is that good bad or indifferent.
Ignore 'em :-)
All my searches in google have come up with no detailed explanation, and
although your suggestion is very helpful it isn't complete, as far as I
can see.
The basic questions I need answering are,
Am I being cut off because my ISP is overloaded and needs to make room
for others,
I wouldn't have thought so.
It's more than likely a modem init/config problem.
Am I being cut off because of line quality or modem config.
Am I being cut off because of software like guarddog(don't think so, but
I'm not sure) etc.
Or what ?
I suspect you have a Rockwell chipped modem, similar to mine.
If so, fire up KPPP, click the "Configure" button and then click the
"Device" tab.
Things to look for here are:
Flow control should be set at "Hardware(CRTSCTS)"
Line termination should be set at "CR"
Connection speed should be "115200"
Modem timeout should be set at "60" seconds or greater.

Now click on the "Modem" tab.
"Wait for dialtone before dialing" should be X'd.
Now click on the "Modem commands" button.
For starters, try "ATZ" in the "Initialisation 1" box.
Leave the "Initialisation 2" box empty.
"No dialtone detection" should be "ATX3"
Now try it again and see what happens.
Best of luck :-)
Hope this helps.

Select "Tools/Preferences/Fonts" and then click on "Interface menus" in
the "Type" column. Then click the "Choose" button and from there you can
select the font, font size, etc. I have mine set at "Nimbus Sans L [urw]",
size 14, weight = normal.

[newbie] LS-120 media change

2004-06-25 Thread Martin Foster
After installing MDK 10 (Official), I have a "Zip Disk" icon on my KDE
desktop which points to my internal LS-120 floppy drive. The first time I
put a floppy in the drive and clicked on the icon, I was able to view the
contents of the floppy. If I now put a different floppy in the drive and
click on the icon, the contents of the first floppy are displayed. In
other words, a media change doesn't appear to be being detected. Here is
the relevant line from /etc/fstab:

none /mnt/floppy supermount
dev=/dev/hdd,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,codepage=850
0 0

What do I need to do so as a media change will be detected?

[newbie] Kernel 2.6 and 9.2

2004-06-21 Thread Drew Martin
Hi All,
I there a know problem with 9.2 and Kernel 2.6?
I installed 6.2 and boot into the system with no problems, until I tried to use
K3B.The program would not start,so I used XKill to stop it.When I reboot, the
info on the boot screen said I had not unmount my Home partition.
When I got into KDE the hard drive light stayed on,and the Teac CD-writer
active light l stayed on,like I was using the drive.When I reboot again I
received a string of error messages, about Home not been unmount.
I booted into Gnome and did not get the H/D or Writer problem, until I tried to
use the writer again. So when I shut down the PC,i had the unmount problem
again, when I went back to Gnome the problems above start again.

[newbie] Win partition write perm

2004-06-16 Thread martin brandt
Arg! This is hell.
I have been trying to obtain write permission on my windows storage partition.
I have tried chown-ing in a console (in su), i have tried changing via
properties whilst logged in as root, i have tried in Control
centre/security/DrakePerm by adding a new rule, modifying the current rule
(which i shouldnt be able to do i think i read somewhere).

What am i doing wrong? Everytime i make the changes, they seem to be over
written again, back to the old settings.

I have entry, execute and write for User, but not for Group or other.
The owner is 'root' group 'root', although if it was i would be able to change
the permissons. I think it is some sort of windows permissions that are
stopping me, as i have had the same problem before.

I need write permission. Is there anyway to edit the permission settings
manually, like in an fstab type file?

Hi All,

A friend of mine has had her Windows XP Laptop trashed by a number of viri and

Is there any way I can boot up her PC using MKD Move or Knoppix, and copy
over the files on the machine,to my MDK only PC,so I can clean them and save
them to disc?If the worse comes to the worse, would be possible to connect a
USB printer and print them off?Does Ark do spilt Zip files over multiple
floppies?Because that maybe an other answer to the problem.
My PC has USB ports and a network card,I would prefer to use the
USB,because I use the NIC to connect to the net using a cable modem.and I
dont want to naff up MAC address for it.

Hi Dan,
  Thank you for that,works a treat,connected to FastTrack 1st

Cheers,

Create the directory FastTrack in /home/username/.giFT
then copy the contents of /usr/share/giFT/FastTrack
to the new directory you just made.
Now change the permisions from root to user and it should work.
You may have to open ports 1213 and 1214 in your firewall also

Ah ha! Well my linux partition is hda5, mounted that, and in the lilo.conf i

 found:

 other=/dev/hda3
 label="old_windows"
 table=/dev/hda

Now I installed windows over my old windows partition, which an image of
 seems
to still appear in the windows boot loader, and obviously is causing problems

when booting on linux. I need to remove this but how?

(P.S. Is it me or is everyone else's mail getting returned occaisionally?)

[newbie] k3b

2004-04-10 Thread Drew Martin
Hi All,
   How do I sort this?
No support for ATAPI with cdrdao
You will not be able to use all your reading devices as copy sources since
there is at least one not configured to use SCSI emulation and your system
does not support ATAPI with cdrdao.
Solution: The best and recommended solution is to enable ide-scsi (SCSI
emulation) for all devices. This way you won't have any problems.
I know it would better if this was put right.I'm using an IDE DVD-ROM 16x
and a TEAC CD-W58E writer. The DVD drive shows up as ATAPI and the TEAC as
SCSI drive,in the interface section.
 Cheers,
 Drew

[newbie] Kernel compiling for Driver

2004-04-06 Thread martin brandt
Hello everyone,
Im wanting to install my drivers for my ATI Radeon 9200SE ive bought recently
on my mdk 9.2, and i have downloaded the appropriate rpm, but i need to tailor
my Kernel to allow the driver to work. Now messing around with Kernel sounds
complicated and i was wondering if it is actually doable by someone like me
with little Linux knowledge. Would i be able to do it following instructions?
Would it take too long?

The error is documented here: http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4475.html

Thanks in advance.

Thats sorted it out,I have turned off Scan on Log On,while sort the
the plugins out.
I was looking at installing 3.2,but it was going to take forever to
download even with broadband.I'm going to wait until 10.0 Final is released
and install that.

Too many arguments supplied: {-cp, swt-pi.jar:swt-mozilla.jar:swt.jar:Azureus2.

secure one, but the regular one will not read or write. I can't figure
out why, can anyone help? Here is my fstab file. Let me know if you
need more info.

Almost there...
I did what you said (except that file was in /etc/X11) and i deleted the
virtual lines (there were about 5 cases under "Screen") and when i rebooted the
screen was normal except like 800x600, so when i tried to change back to my
usual 1024x768 it returned to virtual desktop again.. In more ideas? What is it
that is telling it to change it to a virtual desktop?
