I downloaded that a while ago, it's not as a screensaver for linux, just

Strange that, I can't even get kppp to work at all. I had to resort to a suite of
home grown shell scripts (Some of them 'borrowed from Debian :-)

Debugging don't give me any info ('cept the last msg is starting pppd & then
disconnect after a few mins - timeout?)

An alternative would be to move the kde directory into /opt & place a symlink
in /usr or /usr/local, depending upon where RH6 placed it.

That is because the shutdown command is not available for su root, as the
standard su root path doesn't include /sbin. I would recommend putting a
symlink maybe in the /usr/bin or somewhere where the path is on the su root. To
find out what the path is, do an echo $PATH and put the symlink in one of the
directories that it spews out to you. That should work.

Good luck

[newbie] Q: XMessageBox

1999-05-01 Thread Martin Barnard

Hi, I was wondering if there was a program anywhere which will open a message
box in X containing a text string that's passed to it.
for example, if I wanted a bash script that would open a message box telling me
of an event when I have no terminals open.
If anyone knows of such a program, or can point me in the direction of making
one (I'm currently learning C) then I'd be very grateful.

Thanks
Martin.

You can telnet the linux box from win98 and therefore have all the access of a
local shell user, but to access the win98 box, you will have to either;
a: Set up file/printer sharing on it.
b: Get ftp/telnet servers from tucows or somewhere & then run them on the win98
machine. (Windows has no services running as default)

Thanks, I seem to have configured it. Ihad to make a symlink mouse /dev/psaux

to work (although it didn't the first time I tried it).

[newbie] [Newbie] CD-ReWritable

Hi
Does anyone know how to configure the Phillips PCA362RW CD ReWriter for
linux?
I have it set as my secondary slave (My normal cd is my secondary
master). Also, since I have installed it, I had to rearrange my cdrom
etc to fit it & now /dev/cdrom is a node to /dev/hdc1 and not /dev/hdd1
(what's a node? the man's don't help you much).

Any instructions on making nodes to re-align my /dev/cdrom to /dev/hdd1
and mounting/unmounting data/audio cd's from the recorder would be a
great help.

Thanks

Hi,
I was wondering if you could help my friend, he has installed Mandrake on his
system and for some reason it keeps crashing (SIGHUP 11) when he does things
in X (the whole thing rebooting).
His system is:
Pentium 166MMX
Diamond Stealth 3D2000 (2MB) Video card
32 MB RAM
Generic 32x CDRom
6 GIG Quantum HD
Any suggestions / help would be appreciated as he is getting very fed up with
the whole deal (he has tried 4 different Linux flavours) and has tried
reinstalling numerous times.
