[newbie] Is there a DVD authoring application for Linux?

2002-02-24 Thread Mel Roman

Hi:

I would like to author my own DVDs so that I could
archive all of my digital images on DVD (complete with
menus, etc...) and play them for family and friends on
a DVD player. Apple iDVD application (packaged with
any new machine with a "SuperDrive") does this. Is
there a similar application available for the linux
platform? The only things I can find are some
projects on freshmeat which are only in the planning
stage. Ideally I'd like to burn the DVDs on an
external firewire DVD writer.

Thanks,

Mel

Re: [newbie] Email client that allows checking of hotmail

2002-02-15 Thread Mel Roman

>Does anyone know if there is an email client for

>from Hotmail a la Outlook Express?

Assuming Hotmail is just another POP3 mail server,
most of the common E-mail clients will fetch your
E-mail from your Hotmail account. For example, I use
a @yahoo.com E-mail account for my mailing lists and I
retrieve them using Sylpheed. I used to use KMail for
the same thing and it worked fine also. You jsut need
to configure the account settings properly in your
EMail client (the POP3 server name, username,
password,etc...).

Let me know if you have any specific questions
concerning setup.

Good luck,

Mel

[newbie] Re: Cron

2002-01-23 Thread Mel Roman

>how do i tell cron to run them? i have no idea >where
the cron configs are

You schedule command lines to be executed by the Cron
daemon by using the crontab utility. You should read
up on this utility in the man pages (type "man
crontab" in the terminal).

A much easier way, however is to use KCron (a
graphical front-end to crontab that is included in
your distribution). If you haven't installed it yet,
go back to your install CDs and install it. To start
it, just type "KCron". I believe there is
accompanying documentation in the help menu. It's
pretty easy to use.

Good luck,

Mel

Re:[newbie] Fetchmail Configure

2002-01-11 Thread Mel Roman

I've just recently started using fetchmail myself.
You'll want to first get procmail (the Mail Delivery
Agent that comes in your Mandrake distribution)
configured first, and then configure fetchmail to
fetch your mail and have them processed by procmail
(which will sort them and put them in the mail folder
of your choice, etc... with "recipes" that you can
write). About the best fetchmail documentation that
I've found is the on-line documentation (type "man
fetchmail"). It's not step-by-step, but if you read
through it, it's not too bad. You can find some good
introductions to procmail for newbies from the
www.procmail.org website. I found Nancy McGeough's
overview for newbies at the following site especially
helpful:http://www.ii.com/internet/robots/procmail/qs/

After reviewing the fetchmail and procmail
documentation you may still have a few questions, but
hopefully these will give you a start.

Good luck,

Mel

RE: [newbie] Shell Script

2002-01-06 Thread Mel Roman

Hi:

If I understand you correctly, you have a shell script
that you want to invoke from an icon on your desktop.
There no need to "create an executable" if the script
does what you want it to do once invoked. Just create
an icon on your desktop. In the properties of that
icon, there should be a field where you specify the
command line to be executed when the icon is pressed.
Fill in that field with the full path and filename of
the script.

I've tried not to be too verbose, but let me know if
any of this requires further clarification.

Have a nice day,

Mel

[newbie] RESOLVED: Why does fetchmail see my messages, but skip retrieving them?

2002-01-06 Thread Mel Roman

Hi:

I figured out the problem. I reviewed the man
fetchmail documentation again for the "No Keep" option
Lee Roberts referred to (Thanks, Lee) and then tried
including the -K switch in my fetchmail invocation.
This, however did not solve the problem.

While scanning some of the other options, however, I
noticed the -a switch (which says to retrieve all
messages even if they had been marked "seen").
Looking back at the log file, I noticed that the mail
server had indicated that the one message was "seen",
so it appeared that the message was being ignored for
that reason. I then invoked fetchmail with the -a
switch and everything was working fine again.

For some reason, the mail server was marking the
messages as seen, even though I don't think I had ever
had anything to do with those most recent messages
before. At any rate, I'm going to include the -a
option from now on.

Thanks again to Lee for taking the time to offer your
thoughts.

Have a nice day,

Mel

Re: [newbie] Mac vs Intel architecture deliberations

2001-10-22 Thread Mel Roman

I stand corrected - thank you. I have been mounting
my local NTFS partition read-only for quite some time,
but did not know that SAMBA allowed you to write also.

Aside from the SAMBA clarification, does anyone have
any other thoughts about the pros and cons of getting
into the Mac architecture?

[newbie] Mac vs Intel architecture deliberations

2001-10-22 Thread Mel Roman

Hi everyone.

I´ve been playing with linux (ML8.1) for a little
while on my home machine (an old P166). Our family is
getting to the point where we need a second machine,
so I´m trying to decide on the merits of going with a
PowerPC (Mac) architecture (perhaps a new Mac G4)
instead of Intel. I forsee my current machine being
used primarily as a linux box (file/print server,
database server, secondary desktop for me). We would
use the newer machine as the primary (user-friendly)
desktop that all family members will be comfortable
using.

One of the things about the Mac that caught my
attention was that its new OS X is basically another
Unix variant. Aside from being more stable than
Windows, Im hoping that each machine would be able to
easily mount the others file systems. Has anyone tried
this? I would expect it to be simply a matter of
starting up an NFS service. I know that you can
similarly use SAMBA to serve files to a Windows
client, but I understand that this would be more
limiting (the linux box cant write to the Windows
partitions, etc...).

I know that several distributions (Mandrake, SuSe, and
Debian) come in PPC flavours, but I sometimes wonder
if they will continue to find it worthwhile to develop
for PPC. Although I expect that we would usually use
OS X on the Mac, I would eventually want to someday
put linux on that machine also. How does everyone
else feel about the future of linux support for the
Mac?

I would be interested in any thoughts/experiences
people have concerning Mac vs Intel architecture
(either relating to the above or in any other
respect).

Thanks in advance,

Mel

[newbie] Retrieving Yahoo mail with K-mail - Here's how

2001-09-01 Thread Mel Roman

There's been a lot of discussion about how to retrieve
web-based mail with the K-mail client. This is
actually pretty easy if your Web-based mail server
supports POP mail clients. I use KMail to retrieve
mail from my Yahoo account every day. In fact, I get
all my mailing lists that way. It's simply a matter
of setting up an account in KMail for the Yahoo mail
account and then setting the correct options on your
web-based Yahoo account). Here's how:

Configuring your Yahoo account:
==
Log on to your yahoo mail account and select Options.
The go to the "Pop Access and Forwarding" section and
select "Web and Pop Mail Access".

Setting up a K-mail account to retrieve from Yahoo
==
In KMail, go to Settings > Configuration. Under
"Incoming Mail" press "Add" to create a new account
for K-mail. Specify Pop3. In the "Add Account" form
just fill in your personal info (a nickname for the
new account, your Yahoo logon id, password, etc...)
and use the following:

Host = pop.mail.yahoo.com
Port = 110

You should then be able to download from your Yahoo
account.

Good luck,

Mel
