No it doesn't. It creates a .ps file, most likely in /tmp. Watch what it
says it's doing. You can open the .ps file in gv and print it from there
quite easily.

No and Yes, I would think. If we count desktops M$ is clearly on more boxes

Try using xpdf. It will convert the .pdf to a.ps file and then print from gs.
I'm sure there are many other ways that might work with even fewer steps, but
I like my results with this method.

My one experience in this areas has been quite different though. About
two years ago, my Father-in-law (now 78) got his first computer ever. He,
and his daughter (my bride's sister) got Dell's, but ignored most of my
advice: they let them install ME; winmodem, etc. Well my sister-in law
lives four hours away, so it was up to be to provide technical assistance
for Dad (I'm only about 20 minutes away...)
After about 8 months of virii, user error catastrophies and other
predicatable problems, I wiped his hard drive clean and installed RH 8.0.
It's been OVER a year now and he hasn't had a problem since. He really
just wants to e-mail friends (and my son in college), browse the web, play
a few simple games, keep his check book, relatively simple tasks. I never
gave hime the root pass word so he can't screw it up too badly. Whenever
I visit I do any necessary upgrades, but nothing significant. It all
"just works" for him and meets HIS needs for a computer.

No need for a flame war, but I'd suggest that those who still, for whatever
reason, use some iteration Windows, try to avoid using the virus magnet known
as Outlook or Express. There are numerous alternatives that will work on that
platform without the dangers to self and others imposed by Outlook usage.

If you configured for the plugins during your install, you still need to

click on install and navigate to /usr/local/lib/sylpheed. the plugins are
there (ending in .so, or .sa, I believe).

Yes...; .blackboxrc can be set to any number of "themes", and the theme
can be edited in such a way that virtually any fair sized .jpg (or other
image file) can be used as the "background". I've used some really nice
ones of Laetitia (the supermodel - ). There are even quite a few at
the various "theme" sites out there

Good point, Joe. I have to admit that RP has no eyecandy. Sort of a Bauhaus
approach: form follows function . I think when I'm in the mood for
eyecandy again I'll go back to the most recent Blackbox which I had used for
about a year, haven't used for the past year. Also considering giving xfce
4.x a spin. I used to use 3.8.x.

For rpm one only needs to:
$rpm -ivh .rpm

and the rest should happen automagically.

With an unterred source file, your three steps above are typical (though
not always required).
The tird one must be done as the root user usually.

If you'd like to try some really minimalist wm, my favorite is ion (no icons,
taskbar, or menues though). You might give haze a try also (it has some menues
that can very easily be edited). Blackbox is more full featured yet still
maintains a very small footprint.
As recommended above, try a bunch and find what suits the way you work. Try
getting more RAM as well (an additional 256 will likely cost you $50-$60)

Hi Randy,

Not to beat this to death, but I tried this littl experiment just now. I
opened a document in AbiWord (0.99.7) that had a .aw extension (from
Applixware). Went to "save as", and saved it as a .doc file [yes, it's
one of the options, along with .rtf and a half dozen others]. I then
closed AbiWord and opened StarOffice 6.0beta. Found the new file with a
.doc extension and it was identified as a MSWord .doc (even at the little
M$ symbol next to the file name). BTW, SO opened it instantly and
flawlessly (SO can neither import or export .aw extensions). Try it if
you have a 0.99.x version of AbiWord.

Cheers, :o)

Nonsense!! I'm no geek..., just an OK user. Out of sheer curiosity, I
intalled Mandrake 5.3 on one of our lab computers back in April of 1999 (I
think?). I had NEVER used linux before. It installed OK (despite not
fully supporting our S3 video card). I downloaded WordPerfect 8.0 for
linux and got it successfully installed LONG before I understood anything
about tar/configure, etc., etc. How? I *read* and *FOLLOWED* the
directions. First try, I got it to work and even borrowed a fellow
teacher's floppy (had to learn the mount comand real quick ;o) ) and
opened her WordPerfect for Windows files flawlessly. AND printed them on
an old HPDeskJet 695c. Lucky, I suppose, but I credit it to *reading*
carefully and following the directions. I went on to loading Caldera 2.2
onto a Toshiba notebook w/o any problem and have since used a variety of
distros on a variety of computers: desktops/server/and several
notebooks.> I believe you really need a
Geek to get you online.===
Nope! Got home home computer and a notebook (that old Toshiba) hooked up
with an external modem on the very first try. I just followed the
directions . At work, my ethernet card has ALWAYS been
automagically configured (I wouldn't have had a clue!!) and worked
immediately, even with that old Mandrake 5.3 version!!!

If speed and footprint are concerns, then Blackbox or Windowmaker might be
even better choices. I believe Blackbox *might* be the lightest weight,
fastest of them all. Xfce might also be worth trying. Not quite as
snappy, but not as Spartan either. BTW, as long as KDE and Gnome are
installed on the machine, you can still use virtually all of their apps
with any of these wm's.

How do you have X configured? Color depth, resolution???
You might want to try a lighter weight WM like Blackbox, Ice, or
Windowmaker ir you're presently using KDE or Gnome.

Do you have a swap partition?? I don't see one above... How big?? Are
you running one of the monster environments? (KDE or Gnome) You may want
to add more RAM. It's pretty cheap about now (but starting to climb
again, I think.. so don't waste time). You can likely add another 256mb
for about US$50. Maybe less...

Hey Rick,
I don't ever do anything special. I just go to the "add" button (I keep

Just navigate to the folder, add all the files an it should play just
fine. I do it all the time, swtiching back and forth between mp3's and
CD's. Mike

Not a bad suite. I use both and prefer StarOffice. I think it handles
M$Office .docs (which everyone else in my building uses ;o( ) with
greater ease. Applixware somethimes chokes on large Excel docs, and I've

its "bloat". Mike

In a text editor, as root, look at /etc/lilo.conf
See if there is an append line. If there is, add to it "mem=128M"
If the line is not there, you can add it:
append="mem=128M"
Then run /sbin/lilo and reboot.

Interesting, Maureen, but how about the export filters? Will K-Office
successfully export to M$Office or Lotus SmartSuite. Can a document be
saved in .doc or .xlm or whatever. When I tried to import a form (lots of
tables) from a Word file that that StarOffice handled flawlessly, there
were too many errors in the K-Word version to make the form usable.
Ordinary Word docs (mere text) seem to work OK. Thanks for the review,

I've never tried Hancom, simply because once I tried StarOffice (started
w/5.0 and have used them all up to my present 6.0), I didn't look any
further. Even 5.x was able to flawlessly open and edit a 55 page Excel
budget document, and then when necessary (for less *enlightened* workers)
convert *back* to Excel format for sharing purposes. Word docs have been
no problem at all and most (though some have been problematic) PowerPoint
presentations have worked also!! I think you'll be impressed. If you have
a dial-up connection, you may wish to *buy* the disc from Sun (only a few
dollars, much lass than the $49 hancom wants), or if you use broadband the
download is absolutely free, though you must register (also totally free).

Most file systems can be accessed by Linux. vfat (a windows fs) can be
mounted rw by linux and shouldn't pose any problems for your linux system.
Merry christmas to you also, and enjoy your early gift ;-) Mike

Are you mounting from a command line?? How are you giving the "mount"

I think at one time Mandrake was more than "loosely" based on RH. Back in
the 5.x days, I believe it was virtually RH w/ a slicker install and KDE
1.x as a default desktop. You are quite correct that it is now a fully
independent (with some similarities, and still rpm based) distro all it's
own. Mike

It can be done in kppp (for dial-up connection) or you can edit
/etc/resolv.conf

domain
nameserver
nameserver

This editing must be done as the root user.
