RE: [newbie] gphoto and LM8.1

2001-10-17 Thread Michael Spivak

the thing is, that you don't need the gphoto to get access to your USB
camera ! all you have to do is to start the USB daemon, then mount your
USB device (I think it's /dev/something) and voalla - you can browse the
images
on your camera with regular konquerror or do an 'ls -lca' in the command
prompt
and copy the images by 'cp' anywhere you want !!

This is the same problem I had in 8.0, I can not get a usb connection with
gphoto and my digital camera. It works ok with serial port as a Kodak DC240
but in usb configuration I can not find the add in in the configuration
panel
that allows the camera to connect. Has anyone had success with usb camera
connection. I can not figure out kamera either, and although man pages are
supposed to be loaded I get no man page for kamera TIA for any
suggestions.

[newbie] civilme, charles : LM 8.1 X 4.1.0 and my 3dfx Voodoo 3 3000

2001-10-02 Thread Michael Spivak

I had some troubles with
it before, and now, when i installed the 8.1 final it came back
:-(((
To the problems :

I have Celeron 466 + 192
MB Ram + S&F 4*4*24 CDR/W + Voodoo 3 3000 3dfx USB + USR 33.6
Modem
I bought the Powerpack of
the LM 8.0, and no matter what i did, i can't make my 3dfx DRI to
work.
When i installed the LM
8.1 Beta 1 , the DRI worked excellent without making any changes at all !!
:-)
Now, i downloaded the LM
8.1 Final, and the troubles are back - The DRM fails to run the
'initBus'
and the DRI fails to run
the 'Initscreen' so i always have my 'Direct Rendering : no' when
running
the 'glxinfo'. I've tried
the 'glxgears' and it works, but it takes 100% CPU, so i guest it's using the
software
rendering. I edited the
XF86Config-4 and have the 'Load DRI', 'Load DBE' and all this stuff, also have
the
'Option DRI True' in the
device section. I sow the XConfig86.0.log and sow that at start everything
good
then it found my 3dfx
chipset ad BusID 1:0:0 (i suppose it peans USB), then no errors at all, and
right
in the end of the log :
(II) DRM failed to init at busid (7, 1:0:0), (EE) DRI failed to 'initdevice' (or
something)

Can anyone please help me
to solve the problem (civikme, charles) ?

RE: [newbie] Digital Camera use with Linux

2001-09-25 Thread Michael Spivak

I have Toshiba PDR-M5 Digital camera that uses
SmartMedia with USB/Serial port and it works fine !
You just have to start the USB daemon (as root)
by "/etc/rc.d/init.d/usb start', then mount the '/dev/tty1'
to some directory (i did it with '/mnt/digitalcam'), and thats it !!
you just go to '/mnt/digitalcam' and copy all your images
like from regular diskette !!! Very simple and easy.

i thank you for reminding us of the people being discriminately massacared
in Palestine. of how the Israelis are using guns and armoured vehicles and
mortar and missiles against unarmed men, women and children every day. Of
how, the Israelis have by force taken away land from their owners, sometimes
killing them; the Palestinians, displacing them, , how they have razed homes
of the parents of "suspected" freedom fighters, even though those freedom
fighters arent there or living there. how they have imprisoned those freedom
fighters, on mere suspicion, without rights, without time limits, without
age limits (could a 14 old kid be a terrorist?)
of how the israelis have taken the opportunity given by the world looking at
america to take over more land in Palestine (a whole town yesterday on
tuesday). of how the israelis are slowly and surely killing the parties who
they are *talking* with in Palestine, may i remind u that the israelis took
over the government building of the PNA recently?

finally, may i remind u that there are always two sides to every issue: the
israelis are after land; from the nile river to the tigris in iraq; whereas
the Palestinians are after their very survival: life.

thanks for letting me rant on a for a bit

Actually, to remove the lilo, you should boot from ordinary DOS diskete, and
type
'fdisk /mbr' - this will remove from MBR record of the LILO (clean it) .
About the partitions - i think you should use the Linux's fdisk to remove
the ext2
partitions, and then use the DOS fdisk to recreate the regular fat16/32.

Michael, did you install 8.0 before or after you bought the Voodoo? 8.0
finds
the Voodoo 3000 (is it AGP or PCI, btw?), and will automagically install 3d
acceleration. You did pick XFree 4.03 and hardware accel. when it asked,
right?

If you added the Voodoo after your 8.0 installation, you can still add
acceleration. Click the Mandrake Control Center icon from your desktop, then
pick "display", pick your settings, and use expert mode. That -should- set
your card up.

Hope this helps, and let us know! ;-)

I've got my Voodoo 4 4500 working with MDK 8.0, but not very well. Switching
from X to console or vice-versa can take 3 or 4 seconds. Saying that, I've
not had the time to spend on fixing the problem and generating a proper
XF86Config-4 file.

However, my card worked straight out of the install - I'm fairly sure the
support for the V3 would be just as good. What problem in particular are you
having?

Title: Message

is your USB
daemon up ?
test is with
'modprobe usb'
anyway, if
it doesn't run (as root ): '/etc/init.d/rc.d/usb start'
this will
start your usb, then you'll have to look for some driver for your
cam
If you has
an SmartMedia or something, like mine - Toshiba PDR-M5, then
it's very
simple, you just mount the smartmedia to /mnt/camera, and access it

like any
other regular directory ...

RE: [newbie] Getting the basics going

2001-07-23 Thread Michael Spivak

Hi

I had exactly the same problem, untill i discovered something nice :

To use the CDR/W you should have root permissions !!
To avoid it you should do next steps :
1. Open the LinuxConf as root and go to the Users menu
2. Make yourself a part of a 'Root' group (and not yours as by default)
3. Open the console, su, then go to /usr/bin
4. Type : chmod 775 cdrecord, then chmod 775 cdda2wav
5. Open the GToaster, go to the configuration and scan the bus

Voualla - you see your CDR

Then, you should go and play with the application to see what options
are necessery for you, but be sure you check the 'Lock CD' - i never
success to burn any CD without locking it.

This what helped me, and i hope it will help you too

Hi Paul,
Thanks 4 the help!

As I said though, M8 knows they are there, I can even access either
one - PROVIDED I delete the other off the desktop first.
It simply will not allow two cdroms on the desktop at once.
( Remember I am gui-oriented)

The other point was that there are two supplied CD burner progs:
Gcombust and Gtoaster from initial install. Both are less than
intuitive!! I came from good ol' EasyCD point and click!
No average user would have a hope with either of them.
I'm looking for a more friendly one.

I took the advice given me and changed my hostname using linuxconf. Now,
when the system boots up, the logon manager (or whatever it is called) does

"cannot find own hostname: system is severely misconfigured". Any help (who

RE: [newbie] [extreme newbie] install .LM8.0

2001-06-07 Thread Michael Spivak

Would you please CC the messages to the maillist too (as i did) ?
Ok, if you'r a newbie, and the installation is new for you, i'll explain
more :

When the system finishing the programs installation, it asks you
to configure the installation of LILO. If you'll follow the installation
without hurry, you'll see the dialog. It asks - where do you want
to install the LILO:

1. On the MBR (Master Boot Record) - you should pick this option
if you want to use the LILO as your default OS Loader.
2. On 1st sector of first Linux partition (you better don't pick it)
3. On a floppy drive.

You should choose the 3rd option and insert an empty (better new)
diskette. It'll install the LILO. Then write with marker 'Linux'
on the diskette to remember, and keep it well from damage - it'll
be your only way to load your Linux OS.

Hope i helped
Feel free to mail any quesiton (i hope, i'll know the answer)

Michael

RE: [newbie] Linux Directory Structure for the Totally Ignorant (rev)

Hi

You can use
the link below to follow to the Official LM 8.0 directory structure
explanation

  AMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: [newbie] Linux
Directory Structure for the Totally Ignorant (rev) LINUX DIRECTORY STRUCTURE    revised  (for best
viewing, use size 10 font) I was told that the proper
word is STRUCTURE but I prefer SYSTEM.  Your choice
One way to get some understanding of  the Linux
Directory Structure is to compare it to a typical office filing cabinet.
We'll consider the cabinet as the starting point or root of the office's
filing system.   The filing system is divided into drawers that have
labels that in some way identify with their contents
Our special  filing cabinet has an identification
symbol   /  and its four  drawers are named
  '/roundfile',    '/cabinet',  '/stuff', and
'/idontknow'.  Each  drawer contains folders and some documents and
all these items have labels for identification.   Some folders
contain additional folders and even these may contain more folders with
documents here and there.  By having an organized order to these folders
and documents, we are able to locate any document by starting with the root of
the system, the cabinet, then going to the proper drawer and opening specific
folders until we come to the desired document.  Incidentally, the / at
the start of each drawername tells us that the drawers belong to the
  cabinet  ( / )
A Linux Directory Structure  is organized much like the
above cabinet.   The difference is, in Linux, we are working with
electronic data storage instead of physical data storage.
The  Linux Directory Structure is contained in a huge
directory.   Think of this huge directory as an electronic file
cabinet that contains all the Linux directories .  Linuxers call it the
'root directory' and identify it with the symbol  ' / '.  It
contains electronic drawers which contain electronic folders and electronic
documents.   Instead of calling them  cabinet, drawers, and
folders,  we'll call all of them directories and instead of documents,
  we'll say files.

/   (the root of the system) __|_

  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |    |
  /bin
  /boot  /dev
  /etc   /home
  /usr
  /mnt   /proc
  /root  /sbin
  /tmp
  /lib   /var
This shows Linux's  standard names of the directories
that are like electonic drawers of a cabinet.  These directories are
assigned names according to their purpose.  For example,  /dev
contains data  for devices such as  disk
  drives, modems, and other hardware.
One directory here is named  /root.  This is one of
the subdirectories of the root directory (of the system)  labelled
/. Think of it as our cabinet having a drawer
labelled  '/cabinet. (so, when we say 'cabinet' we mean the cabinet and
when we say  /cabinet, we mean the drawer   -  /root is
like a drawer in the root directory)
/root is a special directory that is allowed to be opened by
just one person, Think of it as a drawer that has a combination lock and only
one person knows the combination.   We'll call this person
'the root user',  the person in charge of the entire system.
The 'root user' is the only person who knows the
password that will open this directory called   /root.
The 'root user' is the only one who is allowed to manipulate whatever
important information is found in  '/root'  to make the computer do
what it is supposed to do .
In Linux lingo, the ' root user ' is more often called
just  'root'.  This could make  it difficult sometimes to
distinguish between root , the overall directory  ( /  ), and root,
the user, but in the lingo, ,    /  is  called the '
root directory.'  So, to emphasize the point,  /root is a
subdirectory of the 'root directory and  /root is the private domain
of  the user named 'root.   Think, 'root directory' =
cabinet, /root = drawer  and root user  =
manager (some Linux mucky-mucks prefer the title 'administrator)
user root is also referred to as the 'superuser' because of
root's  power over the whole system
Linux allows more than one user use its facilities.
These users have private directories that are  located in the /home
directory.  Each private directory is protected by a password  to
prevent other users from using it.  In some situations, there

I think we have some misunderstandings -
I already downloaded and installed the Mandrake 8.0 on
my Celeron 466 + 198MB RAM + USR 33.6k
The problem is to connect to my office's RAS server
i can't configure it at all :-( It tries to connect,
but when the RAS hang-up and send signal for callback
the Linux tells me "You disconnected from the net.",
and the callback ISN'T dialing my number. On the W2k
it works fine ...

Please help me if you can
i need some guide for "stupid" - some "Dummies guide to
install Linux connecting NT RAS server with Callback"

Thanks a lot in advance.

Michael,

Where are you starting from -- do you have a working Linux system at
home that you need to modify to handle the RAS (what does that stand
for), or do you need a working Linux system?
