[newbie] Kontact Question (how to)

2005-04-11 Thread Mike Adolf

On a shut down I got a strange yellow screen, had to power down. On reboot I
had disk errors. I let the boot loader 'fix' them (with risk of lost data).
After reboot, some task icons and desktop icons were missing and Mozilla lost
it settings/bookmarks. I was able to recover OK except for Kontact. I have
two mail accounts. Prior to the 'crash' the new message/reply screen allowed
me to select the 'from' account from a drop down, now it doesn't. I browsed
the configuration panels but did not see anything related. All else with
Kontact works normally. Any ideas?

Paul,

You can try looking in the hardware database

[newbie] Default Browser

2005-02-22 Thread Mike Adolf
Is there a setting for system wide default browser? In particular, Kontact
uses Konqueror as the browser. I would like it to be Mozilla. I look in
Kontact configure but did not see an appropriate setting. Anybody know how
to change it?

I just right clicked and picked FAT32. However, I also used a new IOMEGA disk
(right out of the box) which I assume was formated by IOMEGA. When I did
fdisk I got the same kind of results. Should I try something else, like
obtaining IOMEGA fomatting software (download?). What if I format using
mke2fs (ext2), do think all would go back to normal then (what ever that
is!). I just would not use the disk in windows. This should not be so damn
complicated and difficult!! (oops linux fustration showing).

 * I have one disk I formatted FAT32 on windows xp.
 * I booted 10.1 with disk in and wrote a text file to it. OK
 * I rebooted 10.1 with disk out and inserted after boot, the file was present

 * I rebooted 10.1 with disk in, file was there.
 * I manually ejected it and inserted a second disk containing IOMEGA written
files (a new factory formatted disk)
 * When I open the zip, the window still showed the file from disk 1, and I

 * I su-ed to root, umount /mnt/zip and mount /mnt/zip with IOMEGA disk still

It now works! After editing modprobe.preload with ide-floppy, I rebooted.
When I tried to copy a file to the zip, it failed. I looked in fstab and the
system had placed the exact line you listed above. There is no hdd4 in dev,
only hdd. So in desperation I changed fstab to /dev/hdd and rebooted with
the disk in the drive. During boot, it polled the device (green light). It
never did that before. I then opened it and successfully copied a file.
Something still seems bogus. I guess I can make a Twiki entry, but I am not
sure the solution is necessarily the correct one.

Thanks for all you help.

Here some IDE stuff from dmesg

I guess I need an hdd, which is what I used in 9.2, but it was their at 9.2

How should I create hdd, and what should my fstab entry be? I am using fat32
format on the disk. Should I format it to something else?

There is no target1 in bus1 only a target0. If I run the ls -l ... with
target0, I get exactly what you do. By the way, all other IDE devices work.

WITHOUT disk in drive
ide/host-1/bus1/target/lun0/part ide/hd/c-1b1tu0p discs/disc-1/part

WITH disk in drive
ide/host-1/bus1/target/lun0/part ide/hd/c-1b1tu0p discs/disc-1/part

no difference!

My machine has primary and secondary IDE ribbons with two devices on each.
Ribbon1: Lite On DVD writer and Zip 100
Ribbon2: Floppy and second hard drive.

[newbie] trouble mounting zip drive

2005-02-09 Thread Mike Adolf
After installing 10.1 my zip was not recognized, no entry in fstab. Tried to
create device using Create New/Device/Zip Device from the desktop (right
click). An icon appeared but it won't mount (as root). Tried to create a
device using makedev /dev/hdd4 (4 since I want vfat and windows uses partion
4?). I did not see when it happened but now I have two zip icons on the
desktop. After reboot they are still there and now there is no hdd4 in dev.
What the !*&^% is going on. How do I get rid of those icons and start over?

How does one do that? The page I looked at was
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/hardware.php3. I did a search for any
compatible dvd writer. It only found 3!

I did not see an obvious place to make an entry.

[newbie] Need C++ help!

2005-02-03 Thread Mike Adolf
I am relatively new at C++/QT and I can't get the following to compile.

Note the declaration of the operator<< overload in class Employee. If instead
I put the implementation here, it compiles. But if the impmentation is
placed outside of the class declaration as is done below, I get the following
errors: (errors point to the implementation code)

(1) QDataStream& Employee::operator<<(QDataStream&, const Employee&)' must
take exactly one argument
(2) `QDataStream& Employee::operator<<(QDataStream&, const Employee&)' member
function declared in class `Employee'

What's wrong with the implementation? It's driving me nuts.

QString surname() const { return sn; }
int salary() const { return sal; }
void setSalary( int salary ) { sal = salary; }
private:

int sal;
};

// IMPLEMENTATION

I don't have the problem any more. I now enjoy a high speed microwave link!
When I had the problem, I also raised my timout--didn't help. Also, I
believe any good ISP should be able to connect within 30 sec.

Thanks for the reply. I did as you suggested. The resolution was at 1024x786
(or something like that) and the color was already set at 16bpp, which was
the smallest of available choices. I change the resolution to 1024x480, the
next smaller choice. After reboot, KDE came up, but the smaller resolution
is unworkable. I used harddrake to reset it back to 1024x786, rebooted, and
got the same black screen. This is a dual boot with XP and XP works fine
with the higher res. I have another monitor to try, but if that doesn't do
it, I guess that 10.1 doesn't work with the graphics card, Intel 185.

Spoke too soon. The above png files are large pics for html documentation.

Thanks just the same. Mike

[newbie] 10.1 missing icons

2005-01-25 Thread Mike Adolf
I was doing the QT designer tutorial, it directed me to browse to locate an
icon called tabwidget.png. This icon and others used in the tutorial are not
in my installation of 10.1, which includes the development packages. All
autoupdates were also run during installation. Is this an oversite on the
part of the release makers? Does any body have these icons or know where to
get them. Goolging produced a couple of locations such as:

 /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kommander
 and
$QTDIR/app/qt/tools/designer/examples/colortool/images
QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt3

which I also do not have.

I installed drakwizard and now have the samba server wizard. I configured
samba to share my printer and a public folder. However, from XP I can't see
the printer or the public folder. I tried adding a printer from XP by letting
it look for one. It only found the windows work group containing the local
machine. I identified the windows work group to samba. What now.?

[newbie] Samba Newbie!

2005-01-23 Thread Mike Adolf
I recently went to 10.1 and now would like to set up a simple home network
consisting of:

Dlink DI-514 router connected to my linux box (it has my cloned mac)
XP wireless labtop
Another XP 10/100 connected machine.

I would like to:
share printer (connected to my linux box)
share files between all machines

What I know--not much
1. I setup private IPs in the router. (I am assuming router firewall is
sufficient).
2. All machines have internet access via router.
3. I can ping machines from my machine by ip and name (I've populated the
hosts file)
4 I can only ping by ip from the XP machines. (I guess I need a DNS ??, How??)
5. Using mdk control center, sbm mount points, search for servers shows the
other machines, but I can't connect. (no domain?)
6. Using XP network wizzard, seems to want a 10/100 connection not a wireless.
7. The more I read the less I know.

What do I do on my box?
What do I do on the XP machines?

[newbie] cd mount problem

2004-06-12 Thread Mike Adolf
I am using dvdrip to copy a dvd and during the burn phase I get:

*
ERROR: Cannot open SCSI device '1,0,0' cannot open /dev/sg.
*
The (1,0,0) I put in as the 'cdrecord device' it stands for device location
bus,target,lun

I have nothing called sg in /dev

Everything in /dev pertaining to the cd drive links to device:

"ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd" (which is why I used 1,0,0)

Note: it says ide not scsi, Is this the problem? (how do I fix?)

fstab contains:
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto
umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0

fdisk -l (does not show any hdc)

fdisk hdc (gives: unable to open hdc)

mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom (gives ...)
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: Wrong medium type

( I have a new CD-R) in the drive)
(all links to: ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd have no write permissions as do
all mount points.)

This is the extent of what I know. Can anyone help???

This is embarrassing, but I guess I have to tell! When I first ran the C

size of the second partition) BUT I FOR GOT TO RECOMPILE and was running the

[newbie] Checking disk size from C

Greetings

If I do 'df' if get

/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/part7
   49G 755M 48G 2% /home

Says I have 48G free.

If I run a C program calling statfs("/home", &fs), I get:

type of filesystem = 61267
optimal transfer block size = 4096
total data blocks in file system= 1510072
free blocks in fs = 905771
free blocks avail to non-superuser = 829062
total file nodes in file system = 768544
free file nodes in fs= 631185
file system id = 0
maximum length of filenames= 255

3710038016 bytes left

The numbers don't add up. What am I missing? I'm running 10.0 CE.

Thanks Mike.

I got SOUND!

I played with mixing and now I have sound. I ran alsamixer, which gives you a
visual (read only). It shows red, which usally means distortion, but I had
to put Master Digital in the red (93) and PCM in the red (89) to get things
to work.

While alsamixer was running, I used Kmix to adjust levels (aumix has no
control for Master Digital).
Master Digital is on the Input tab (first control on left)
PCM in on the output tab (first control on the left)
No other controls seemed to have any effect, except CD which controls volume
only when playing a CD.

I now have CD, DVD audio, and MP3 (both totem and xine work fine).

Hope this helps. Let me know.

[newbie] Yet another mdk 10.0 sound problem

2004-04-16 Thread Mike Adolf
Everyone must be sick of posts about 10.0 sound problems, so here's another
one.

I upgraded from 9.1, where all forms of sound worked great, CD, DVD, mp3,
startup and shutdown ... My card is cs4236b. On 9.1 everything only worked
with driver cs4232 (don't ask me why).

Now on 10.0, the default cs46xx, cs4232 and all other cs drivers, except
cs4236, can not find the sound card. snd-cs4236 is the only driver that
allows me to run aumix (it is not muted) and kmix. Nothing works except
ksCD, and somebody wrote that it's because it cabled (but it won't work with
any other dirver).

I did most every thing I read on the newbie list to try to get sound working,
including alsaconf, which always stated that it is configuring cs46xx driver.
I think I have all the alsa modules, including alsa-util.

It is very discouraging when upgrading an OS (I did install with existing
partitions) to have things that use to work, not work! There has to be
something wrong with linux and sound or mandrake and sound. It just should
not be this difficult!

When is 11.0 coming out?

Mike

Charles

I located the sorce files (tar.gz) for libdvdread and dvdbackup. I
configure|make|make install for libdvdread and then compiled dvdbackup (it
did not have a configure). All went well until I ran dvdbackup. It gave me
the error

"libdvdread.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

The make install placed libdvdread.so.3 (as a sym link to another so) in
/usr/local/lib and this path was "-L" in dvdbackup compile. How can I find
out why the executable can not find it? The so file has all permissions.

Thanks for you help,

[newbie] zip mount question

2004-03-21 Thread Mike Adolf
When I boot MDK 9.1 and open my zip icon I get the error.

" Could not enter directory /mnt/zip"

fstab associates /dev/sda4 with /mnt/zip.
If I umount zip and then edit fstab to change sda4 to sda, all works well
after a remount using "mount /mnt/zip".

Hears the rub! The next time I boot, fstab is reset to sda4. The control
center mount point always shows sda4, even after editing fstab and all is
working. Why is it being reset at boot? Someting to do with auto detection?

Gerg,
So far as I can tell, the 0.28 install went well. Now I can try to install
updated ATI video drivers, which is why I had to go to 0.28.

Thanks for your help!

I think I leave the source build for later. These are the steps I'll follow.
If something is screwed up, let me know.

1. Make sure my boot floppy works
2. Add the following to /etc/lilo.conf
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.21-0.13mdk

root=/dev/hdb1
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.21-0.13mdk.img
append="quiet devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off"
vga=788
read-only
?? do I also have to run lilo to get the config to take ??
3. Install kernel-2.4.21.0.28mdk rpm
4. reboot and...

I forgot to ask in the previous reply about the following 0.13 specific
symlinks in /boot

config, kernel.h and System.map

I did not see them referenced in lilo.conf.

[newbie] Problem recording voice

I was trying voice recording using rec/play. Play seems to work ok since a

recording. Aumix seems set OK. (the button under rec column is red). One
strange thing. My mic feeds through to my speakers, a loud speaker system, in
effect.

[newbie] kernel upgrade?

2004-03-15 Thread Mike Adolf
I am now runing kernel 2.4.21-0.13mdk in mdk 9.1 and would like to upgrade to
2.4.21.0.28mdk. Rpmdrake list 5 flavors of the 0.28. under update.

Standard, enterprise, secure, smp, and source. Since the machine is non-net
wrokstation, I guess I would use

kernel-2.4.21.0.28mdk rpm

What exactly happens if I install this rpm?
Does it preserve my configuration defined during 9.1 install?
Does lilo get updated in such a way to allow booting to old kernel?
Or should I attemp a configure and build from the source rpm according to a
HOWTO?

Thanks,
mike

I did not do anything with alsa at the time I changed to 4232 using harddrake.
But, I may have worked (played) with alsa in earlier attempts on sound. Can't

I have not read all the correspondence on this problem, so I may be suggesting
something already tried. I also have the same sound system as you. For a
long time I used 4236 driver (on MDK 91) and I could play CDs but nothing
else. Once after booting I ran 'dmesg' to see any boot messages. When I
booted with a failed driver (ie 46xx) the message suggested I try 4232. I did
and everything is much better. xmms works, and kbootle plays DVDs with audio.
I also get KDE startup and logoff sound. Try using harddrake to set this
driver.

Double clicking CD desktop icon produces Konqueror and dialog with error:
Can't enter directory /mnt/cdrom

fstab entry is:
none /mnt/cdrom supermount
dev=/dev/scd0,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

Produces the error:
mount: block device /dev/scd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/scd0,
or too many mounted file systems

CD is not audio.

[newbie] Sorry it didn't work out!

2004-01-29 Thread Mike Adolf

A while ago I sent mail indicating that when I did
"Update" in the 9.2 installer, it all but trashed by dual boot machine. No boot
window and Windows would never boot (yea I know that's a good thing) and when
9.2 booted every thing was screwed up.  I got one reply which said I should
have installed instead of updated. If I am using an product to take me from 9.1
to 9.2, logic tells me that the correct selection is "update".  It took a
lot of effort to just bring Windows back and I decided that maybe I was not
ready for Mandrake-- that installer needs work, big time!  I am going to
give Debian a try. I know, it is more nuts and bolts than Mandrake, but I am not
looking for something that's easy, just applications that work as the interface
implies.  I am not burning bridges. Who knows, maybe I'll return to mandrake.

Thanks to all who gave me assistance
:-)

Thanks to all, It seems the problem was due to how I started the process. The
first time I connected it to linux I booted before I turned the camera on. I
reversed the process and booted with it already on and linux gave me a new
"Hard Disk (sda1) mounted at /mnt/removable" All pictures now just appear as
files in a folder--too easy! Aron, I think the optio 555 only has one
format, USB mass storage.

Something is dorked up. I have three versions of drakxtools (en, es, and fr).
Following fr on CD2 is mathplot? I guess I'll just have to wait until I
upgrade to 9.2. I've been avoiding 9.2 because of problems appearing on the
list. Thanks for your help Anne.

I checked each rpmdrake(+) source I have configured (all 3 install CDs, plf
and textstar). None had mandrake_doc-en-9.1-2mdk on them. Only cd2 came
close with mandrake_doc-drakxtools-en-9.1-2mdk. What distribution bundle is
suppose to contain mandrake_doc-en-9.1-2mdk?

Hi Anne,
There are many (457) dirs in /usr/share/doc just not mandrake/en. Can I run
the installation disk again and just install documentation? I looked in
rpmdrake but nothing jumped out?

derek,

You hit the nail on the head! Long, long time ago when I first installed MDK,
I set up a second user for my wife. However, she wanted nothing to to with
linux. Since then, it was necessary to reinstall linux (no reformatting) and
I only created one user. Now that our windows half is down, waiting on a new
modem, she thinks linux might me OK for getting her mail. So, I used
userdrake to set up a second user by the same original name; and I thought
the home directory was just created then. Wrong. It was the old one from
before with a UID=502 (as expected since done on an install). Anyway, I just
trashed the directory and made a new user using userdrake. It used UID= 500.
All is well.

I do feel that the different numbering schems should be cleared up in the next
release.

Thanks,
mike

[newbie] linux-out to lunch

2003-11-29 Thread Mike Adolf
Sometimes linux looses it.
I added a second user using userdrake. When I tried to logon to the new
account. I get "No Write Permission on HOME " KDE can't start. SO, although
the new home has the same permissions as my home, I change the permission to
777 on new HOME. Tried to log on again (without rebooting), and it worked.
I thought, OK problem solved. Wrong! After I rebooted, it got the same error,
THE PERMISSONS WERE SET BACK TO ORIGINAL VALUES!! I repeated the chmod again
just to make sure I wasn't nuts. I wasn't.

I opened userdrake and it had the userid = 500 and groupid = 500. BUT doing an
ls -l on /home shows that the new home has user and group both 502

Linux has almost defeated me!

Robin,
My Blaster Modem di5601-1 is a hardware moden and it works fine with Linux.
My porblem, since I want to upgrade 'half' my system to XP, it won't work
with XP, something about TAPI not working for earlier models.

I was wondering. Can I install a second cheap PCI winmodem on another com port
to use just for windown XP, and use the Blaster modem for only linux? Or
will they confilct?

Re: [newbie] No Sound -- What' this error mean?

2003-11-25 Thread Mike Adolf
Raffaele,

I followed what you suggested and took a look at the generated .conf file and
it's documentation in isapnp.conf man page. Two cards showed up, one sound
and my modem. Just when I was about to dig in and try to edit the .conf, I
noticed that the .conf identified my sound card as cs4236. I never knew
exactly the designation of my card. When my sound was working in the past, I
specified cs4232 using harddrake, since the MDK default cs42xx did not work.
This was just a guess on my part, and for some unknow reason, it woked.
Buthowever this time no mater what I did 4232 would not work. Anyway I did
not have to run iaspnp. All I did was use harddrake to locate and set the
driver to cs4236B. Just for kicks I rebooted and when the sound card was
initialized, my speckers barked (that never happened before). So I thought
YAH it's going to work. When I tried my CD player, however, it did not work.
But I remembered the aumix 'mute all' problem. So I ran aumix (which would
never run before), unchecked 'mute all', adjusted settings to midrange. Now
I have sound!!!

Although I did not use isapnp, it did allow me to find the correct driver. So
thanks a lot for your suggestion.

Thanks derek,

From PLF site, I used Easy urpmi to Identify and load the sources you
mentioned above. First I tried mplayer. It installed OK, but it would not
play the video. Then I found out that the file type I was downloading is
.ram which has a mime type of realaudio. So, I installed RealPlayer and all
works well. Urpmi is a pretty slick tool, especially since it knows what
dependencies are needed.

What, if anything, will I need to do with urpmi after going to 9.2. How do
you know what aps need updating?

[newbie] Receiving a FAX

I was able to send a FAX using KdeprintFax. Now I would like to configure my

following:

"mgetty allows you to make optimum use of your modem or fax modem in a unix
environment. mgetty handles incoming calls without interfering with outgoing
calls. If the modem can do fax class 2 or 2.0, mgetty can also receive faxes.

Does anyone have experience with this? Is there a better tool? I have a

you choose to do so, sometimes you get a window with a dragon and three
choices, sometimes you get the same OS list displayed by lilo, and sometimes
you just get a 3 inch square blank window. What is really supposed to
happen?

There was a similiar cooker question in the archives but no response.
