Re: [newbie] Printer problems

2000-09-10 Thread Monte Milanuk

The HP 722c and other printers around that model number are a special
PITA from heck. HP decided to use a proprietary set of drivers, which,
despite all their talk about linux support, they have yet to release to
the communtiy the details. Dig around on SourceForge for the pnm2ppa
project, and look thru the archives at Linux Journal and Linux Gazette
on these printers. There were several _really_ good articles a few
months back on getting these to run under linux -- IIRC, they are up to
600x600 bw, and maybe color as well. Not quite the 720x720 color you
would want/expect, but pretty good for having to reverse engineer the
drivers from scratch.

Move the tarball to a temp directory, unpack it, (tar xvfz
package.tar.gz or tar xvfy package.tar.bz2) and enter the
directory it creates, and read the directions (README,
INSTALL, etc.)

Re: [newbie] Suggestions for an email client

2000-06-25 Thread Monte Milanuk

O.K., time to jump in and stir things up a bit ;)

You want about the same things I would want from a decent mail
client. Netscape is a PITA, and I haven't gotten it to work right w/
7.1, it gripes about permissions, regardless of what they are set
to. FWIW, if you use fetchmail, it doesn't much matter if Netscape
doesn't natively handle multiple POP3 accounts, the way I see it. But
that's not the point here. My point here is that the kmail that comes
with LM 7.1 is 'broken'. It is several versions old; the latest 'stable'
is 1.0.29-2, LM 7.1 ships w/ 1.0.28. kmail managed to mangle more than a
few emails incoming, giving them 'No Subject', etc. The latest version,
1.1.x, which comes w/ KDE 2.0Beta 2, has threading, and is supposedly much
improved. But if you subscribe to the kmail list, and check out the bugs
still being reported, I personally find it hard to seriously consider
kmail for real use. The other choices are Mahogany, CSCmail, XFMail (and
it's new gtk incarnation Archimedes), Balsa, etc. I find it kinda odd
that there is really only one native KDE mail client. For now, I am
sticking w/ pine, and looking forward to v.4.31 or so, when it gets
threading.

2000-06-24 Thread Monte Milanuk

Well, I haven't had this problem myself (yet), but a few things to try
might be to check your system logs, in case fetchmail is really running
into the firewall, it may leave a trace in the logs. The only part of
fetchmail that I would think would have problems w/ a firewall would be
the last stage where it feeds it to the MTA (sendmail) on port 25. But
you said you left that open explicitly. The other thing to maybe try is
to run fetchmail w/ the ' -vvv' flag for extremely verbose reporting, and
see what it says.

Re: [newbie] procmail sorting

2000-06-21 Thread Monte Milanuk

Well... That doesn't work quite as I had intended. The
whole story is that the stock kmail that Mandrake 7.1 ships
with has been doing strange things to my mail, and is
generally buggy as heck. Plus a botched fetchmail run
partways thru left me w/ several hundred duplicate
messages. I finally got the latest stable version of
kmail, plus the Kleopatra version... neither was an
appreciable improvement for what I wanted. So I tried
using Netscape Messenger. It's worked for years, and I've
got the hotkey sequences pretty much hardwired by now.
Suddenly it tells me that it cant get write permission to
/var/spool/mail/monte for lock files, and I may need to
change permissions to 01777 on that file/directory. I did
that once, and it worked. I reinstalled for some unrelated
reasons, and in this install, it doesn't matter if I chmod
the directory or not, Netscape still refuses to get my new
mail. Fine. Time for pine, the old standby. Now I try
the command listed in Jari's procmail tips, referenced
earlier in the thread, and it didn't quite work. I don't
know if I need to tell procmail to split the inbox file and
treat it like a digest when I feed it to it, but it isn't
creating any of my list mailboxes or anything. And for
somereason, now pine won't check new stuff in my spool. So
I try mutt. It works, but procmail still isn't. I decided
that I really don't want to settle for a cli mailer unless
there is no other choice. It looks like I may have to
append all these various mailboxes together, and feed them
thru a duplicate nuking procmail recipe, and then just have
Netscape sort the messages into mailboxes. What a PITA.
And I really don't want to have to hunt down and delete
manually the duplicates, so I hope I get procmail running
right, soon. What a mess.

[newbie] kmail 1.0.29-2

2000-06-17 Thread Monte Milanuk

Hello, all.

I am trying to install the most current stable version of kmail, 1.0.29-2 (why
does Mandrake 7.1 still have the 'old' 1.0.28?). I didn't find a mdk rpm, so I
got the source and ran ./configure, which bombs out claiming that I need a
'newer' version of jpeglib6, specifically libjpeg6a. LM 7.1 has libjpeg6b. Is
there a relatively simple way to get this to compile w/o having to down grade
my library file?

Thanks for your time,

Re: [newbie] Automatic Email?

2000-06-15 Thread Monte Milanuk

You can set fetchmail up as previously noted, and then
either run it in daemon mode, where it automatically polls
your ISP every so many seconds i.e. 'fetchmail -d 300'
tells it to check every 300 seconds, or 5 minutes.
Alternately, you can set it up to run from a cron script, I
think the advantage of this is if you want to get fancy,
you could make one script to just go ahead and poll the
ISP, and thus bring up the ISP, say maybe 2 times a day.
Another script, could check the status of your dial-out
interface every 5 minutes, and if it is 'up', go ahead and
poll for email. Both Netscape Messenger and kmail will do
interval mail checking. If you have them configured to
directly check your pop account, I'm not sure if they would
bring up your dial-up link.

As far as the cron scripts, I've seen them around, and
might be able to find them again, but I haven't done them
myself yet. I am getting to that point, though.

As far as the other diad-on-demand option, the recent
versions of pppd have a 'demand' feature that works pretty
well. The real advantage of diald is that you can set up
filters to control how long the link stays up, what time of
day it can come up at all, what types of traffic it wil
come up for, and if using an internal network, which hosts
traffic will cause it to come up, if you want. The
tradeoff? It can be a PITA to set up.

Re: [newbie] E-mail Clients

as with most things *nix, the answer is... it depends.

If you are looking for gtk I believe balsa is the current
lead contestant. Supposedly there is an Outlook
(multipurpose communications) knockoff called Evolution
that is on its way from the gnome folks. For now, you have
balsa, and maybe CSCmail

If it doesn't have to be gtk, just easy on the eyes,
mahogany isn't too bad. I had some issues w/ it not
wanting to work for me. YMMV.

Or, you could used mutt in an Eterm. That way you have
mutt's capabilities (pretty much top shelf) w/ clickable
menu's.

Me, I'm going to grit my teeth and use pine (gritting my
teeth because of the lack of threading) and wait and hope
and pray for XPine to get to a more usable state.

Well, for starters, if you got the boxed version of Mandrake, you may
have the rpm version already. check out the 5th and 6th cd's, if you've
got them. If not, check out www.rpmfind.net to find 'em. If you are
bound and determined to use the tarball you downloaded, then put it in
/tmp, then from that directory, type 'tar xvfz some.file.name.tar.gz'
This will cause some text to fly by; the stuff at the far left is the
new directory that the tarball unpacked into. For more information, try
'info tar' or 'info gzip'. P.S. I think I'd recommend the rpm files,
as I found a cool one on the CD's that basically acts as the plugin that
allows netscape under linux to view pdf files inline.

Hope this helps,

I agree. I have Freesco running as my gateway right now, and I have an

Definitely has came in handy. If I see a disturbing site name come up,
I check it out. If it is objectional, well, that was the last time
anyone in this household will ever see it on my network. Perhaps a bit

Re: [[newbie] Printer sharing]

2000-05-06 Thread Monte Milanuk

Optionally, you could run samba on the the Linux box. This will make
the Linux box appear as a Windows server to the Win98 box. You can
share your printer, drive space, etc. Go to www.samba.org for more
info. The latest version is 2.07, vs the 2.06 that comes w/ Mandrake
7.0, and the new version comes (reportedly) w/ a html version of the
O'Reilly 'Using Samba' book, widely considered to be one of the
definitive works on the subject.

A little more work, but ultimately worth the effort.

Welcome to one of the 'quirks' of Mandrake 7.0 ( I presume that is what
flavor you have). If I recall, if you don't select 'Custom', and
'Development' during install, or otherwise explicitly specify to install
the compiler, you don't get it. If you are downloading an *.rpm file,
you should be able to install that no problem, assuming you have all the
dependencies (required files/libraries,etc.) satisfied.

Re: [newbie] Homemade Router/Switch... Being cheap.

If you are being really cheap and don't need anything else besides
routing, go to www.freesco.org. One floppy, setup done in less than 10
minutes (to be fair, I've done it a few times), and you are done.

Yes. Depending on the security level you choose during login, you
cannot log directly into the console as root. This is supposed to help
in auditing which user became root and did something they shouldn't have
when there is more than one root user.

Re: [newbie] running windows in linux

2000-04-22 Thread Monte Milanuk

You could also give VNC a try. It is a program that lets you run an X
desktop using the windowmanager of your choice from a Windows or Mac,
and a Windows desktop from your X Workstation. The client is very fast,
and even comes as a java applet you can run in a browser. What it does
is it connects to a running vnc server on another machine on your net,
similar exporting an X display over telnet. The neat part is that the
connection is 'stateless' so you can open a display on one machine,
close it, open it on another machine, and your workspace is preserved.
It is exactly as you left it. Check out http://uk.research.att.com/vnc
for the details. I believe there are add on modules to facilitate the
use of SSL or SSH for more secure connections.

Re: [newbie] FTP: 500 Illegal PORT Command

2000-04-14 Thread Monte Milanuk

Just a guess here, but I had a similar problem when trying
to access the SuSE update servers via ftp thru a firewall.
If I recall correctly, it has to do w/ the firewall and
using passive mode ftp vs. active mode. In active mode,
the ftp client contacts the server, and the server responds
on a different port to start the transfer. In passive
mode, the client contacts the server, the server responds
back on the same port, and the client initiates the
transfer on another port. Basically in active mode, the
firewall sees an 'unsolicited' incoming connection 'cause
it doesn't match a previous outgoing connection on the same
port, so it is denied and you get the Illegal PORT Command
b.s. I don't know if a firewall plays into your setup or
not, but this is what was going on in my case. YMMV

Have you looked at the Trinity OS document at
http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~dranch/LINUX/index-linux.html

It is Redhat/Mandrake-centered, and covers many aspects of getting a
functional and _secure_ network running. Some of the security things
may not apply (i.e. be necessary anymore) to a Mandrake 7.0 system w/
the msec features, but cannot hurt.

Yep. That did it. Thank you very much. Now I just need to get my
Corel WordPerfect 8 CD to work... anyway, for those who are reading,
the one thing that did hang me up a while (w/ the StarOffice setup) is
that I would go to setup as the user, and it would prompt me to put the
files in /home/monte/Office51. Fine, did that. Then, when I ran the
/home/monte/Office51/bin/soffice script, it would setup things and try
to install files to /home/monte/Office51... Oops! Had to run the
initial setup as root, installed to /usr/local/Office51, then ran
/usr/local/Office51/bin/soffice as 'monte' to set up the files needed in
/home/monte/Office51.

Another StarOffice question: What's up w/ the 'install-kde' script? It
copies basically everything in the entire filesystem (/, /mnt, /usr,
/bin/, yadayada) to /~/.kde/share/ What's up w/ that? Takes forever,
for one, very questionable for two. Any ideas?

[newbie] EZ permissions problem

2000-04-01 Thread Monte Milanuk

I have a Sun Microsystems StarOffice 5.1 CD that if I recall right came
bundled w/ my RH 6.1. I would like to install and use this w/ my
Mandrake 7.0 install, but when I mount the cdrom and cd to the
directory, either as root or otherwise, I receive this error:

[monte@ishamael]$ /bin/sh
[monte@ishamael]$ ./setup
sh: ./setup: Permission Denied
[monte@ishamael]$

As I said, the error is the same whether I try it as a regular user or
as root. I have the partition mounted using settings in /etc/fstab of

/dev/hdd/mnt/cdrom/ iso9660 user,noauto,ro 0 0

rather than that supermount stuff (Yuck!). I have a hunch that the
issue may be tied to the permissions set when I mount the cdrom, but the
problem seems to persist regardless of whether I mount the CD as root
from the command line, or as 'monte' from an icon in KDE. Any ideas?

Thanks for your time,

Congratulations! Apparently you have gotten a good install (so
far). What you are seeing is a command prompt, similar to the
msdos prompt you may be familiar w/ in M$ land. You really need
to get a beginners book, like Linux in a Nutshell, or Running
Linux 3rd Ed from O'Reilly Associates. But in the meantime, try
the following:

'startx' should start your X Window session i.e. gui desktop,
assuming it was configured properly during install. If not, well,
you are about to have a much rougher intro to linux. If you did
get a decent desktop to come up, click on an icon that looks like
a computer monitor, and you will be in a terminal (like an M$-DOS
window), and continue.

'cd /usr/doc/howto/' , then 'dir' or 'ls | less' and press
'Space' after you are done reading each screenfull. This is a
listing of all the HOWTO files on your system. They may be
archived w/ a *gz extension, so log in as root, then return to
the same directory and type 'gunzip -r *', which will recursively
unpack everything at and below this directory. Then type 'emacs
Unix-Internet-Fundamentals-HOWTO' and read it _all_. If you get
tired and want to quit emacs, try Control-x Control-c. Then read
'DOS-Win-to-Linux-HOWTO', and if by now you are feeling a little
more comfortable, good. Next time you fire up emacs, type
'Control-h t' for a tutorial on emacs. Granted we put the cart
befor the horse here, but you didn't need to know much about
emacs to get this far. Alternately, you could use emacs to read
the Emacs-Beginner-HOWTO.

Note that none of this requires a graphic desktop. It all works
just fine w/o . If you find emacs to be too much, try 'vi
/usr/doc/HOWTO/Vim-HOWTO' to try the vi editor.

Enjoy,

Monte Milanuk

Re: [newbie] Setting up a Print Server without a static IP

I hope I understand your question properly: You have an internal network
using dhcp and you want to print to one of your internal connections (the
NetPort?)? Correct? Well, if my understanding of your request is correct,
then you should be able to use dhcp to assign a 'static' ip address to a
given hardware MAC address. Try reading thru 'man dhcp.conf'

Haven't actually done this myself, but Linux does support NTFS read
mode, and the write mode is in alpha/beta mode, i.e. use at own risk.
The read-only mode is reported to be fairly stable, though. I believe
you would neet to recompile your kernel to enable these options though.

Depends. Did you partition /home as a separate partition? Thats
normally the easiest way, so that in your new distribution install, just
make sure that you keep that partition as /home and do not format it.
Otherwise, you would have to back up your personal files and restore
them after the new install

I downloaded and burned the 7.0 iso file also, and I had no _major_
problems (so far) I did run thru the install about a half dozen times,
playing w/ different options, and I did have my mouse not work initially
about two of those. I usually noticed this at the first screen and just
opted to reboot and try again, and it always detected the mouse as a
generic ps/2 (good enough for getting going, it's a ps/2 intellimouse)
just fine.

DrakConf works fine. No offense here, but make sure you are running it
as root.

Hope this helps

Well, first off, try looking up information on the telnet daemon, i.e.
'telnetd'. This allows you to be a telnet 'server', and allow telneting
into your box from outside. Try 'man telnet' for the client side, or
'man telnetd' for the server side information. I can dig around a
little more later, but you would be better served in the long run to
find it yourself... nothing wrong with a 'push' in the right direction
though. ;) I've been in the same situation myself before, and probably
will be again in the future. We all have/will be.
