I have been hearing a lot about Linux is dead in the desktop. What is up

saying. "If a commercial company can put 50 programmers to do a certain job.
Then I can put 500 programs to do something similar" (the whole world is
pitching in for Linux), so let's enjoy what ever we have and it will get even
better.

I just installed CWs Wine. It worked fine and yes you need to instal itcl. As
a matter if fact LM 8 poped asking me if I want to install itc. If you are
running LM 8. Then just run the software manager and search for itcl. Then
install it. I am  not sure if you can run photoshop and dreamweaver. Checkout
this site for that application that works on Wine

Hello

I downloaded RealPlayer 8 from www.download.com. I

already installed. I look for realplay, realplayer,
rplayer , with no help,

I type

find -name *real*, I get every name that has the word
real but not realplayer or somrhing similar. So I
decided to do this

rpm -U rp8

after installation is completed I tried to run
realplayer but the sound is realy noisy. I can't get
anything except noise.

The noise is like the noise comes out of a TV with

Re: [newbie] Configuring Fonts

2001-06-21 Thread OOzy Pal

Hello

Here is how I did mine. Now I run beautifUl
anti-aliased system

 1- Install LM8.0 with Xfree86 4.0.3

2- Copy the true type fonts from your windows/fonts
directory to your /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype

3- Go to LookNFeel | Style and check the two options
that says
Apply Fonts and Colors to ..
Use Anti-Aliasing .

4- Edit your /etc/X11/XftConfig and make sure you have
this line:
dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype"
also look for the line that says:
# Substitute TrueType fonts for Type1 versions
under this line change

match any family == "Courier" edit family += "Courier
New";

To

match any family == "Courier" edit family +="Arial";

5. Edit your /etc/X11/fs/config and do the following
change
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1,
 To
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1:unscaled,

6 if you think that anti-aliasing is bothering you for
small font add these lines to your XftConfig
(mentioned in step 4)

match
any size > 8
any size < 12
edit
antialias = false;

Thats it. Hey, I am really newbie. I leanred this
after reading several articles and after spending time
doing trial and error. The above steps might not work
for you. PLEASE, BEFORE YOU CHANGE ANY FILE BACK THE
SUCKER UP.

Re: Success! (was Re: [newbie] My install is either failing or I don't know how to bootup)

2001-06-16 Thread OOzy Pal

I am not sure but try this

in console type

cat /proc/pci

you will get a long list. Look for a line that says
Communication controller. Look a little below that
you will see something like:

I/O at 0xa800
I/O at 0xa820
I/O at 0xa840

Find the IRQ number. It should be above the I/O line.
Then at the console type

setserial /dev/modem uart 16550AN port 0xa800 irq 11

note that I put 16550AN mine was 16550A try both. I
also put 0xa800 for port but yours might be different.
My modem was at IRQ 11 and yours might be different

I got the same error yesterday when I first installed

Mandrake 8.0 and worked fine. I am sure someone else
will have a better suggestion. Wait and see.

[newbie] System is Ok. Should I?

2001-06-02 Thread OOzy Pal

Hi Guys

I got my system with following features

Processor: AMD Thunderbird 1.3Ghz
Memory: 128MB PC133Mhz
Mainboard: MSI K7T Turbo-R
Hard drive: 30GB ATA 100 7200RPM
CD-ROM: Sony 52X IDE CD-ROM
Video Card: nVIDIA TnT2 M64 4X AGP
Sound Card: Integrated VIA Sound
Modem: Aopen FM56K V.90
Mouse: Optical PS/2 Mouse

Everything is working beautiful except the Winmodem
and the built-in promise card. I have not installed
the driver for the promise card. I am sure it will
work. Even if it did not work. I don't care because I
have only one hard drive hooked to the Promise and
this harddrive is for Windows. Now the question is.
Mandrake beautifully detected my nVIDIA TnT2 video
card and my system is so fast. Do I have to get the
driver from nVIDIA and reinstall it or should I leave
it as is.

Hello Guys

Is there a Linux mail programs like MS Outlook or even

I like Outlook's address book. I also like it when I
just type the name of the person I want to email and
if this person name is my address book, Outlook will
automatically substitutes the name with the email
address. I also like the import/export functions of
outlook.

Is there anything to so the same?

Hello

Your server will not parse html file using the php
interpreter. If you want to parse html files I think
you need change your httpd.conf if you are using
Apache. However, if you do this you will put an
overhead on your server because it will parse every
html file.

Re: [newbie] Big Problem Installing Star Office

2001-04-27 Thread OOzy Pal

Hello Michele

There is no stupid question. To make sure that the
problem is not from the CD. Copy the file from the CD
to the hard disk. Up to my knowledge, I think the best
thing to do is to uninstall SO then reinstall it. I am
newbie too. I hope this helps.

Carlos,

You scared me man. I am planing to buy a new computer
soon and I am thinking to buy AMD and the MB has a VIA
chipset. So you don't recommend VIA. What motherboard,
video card, sound card and CPU do you recommend?

[newbie] Consistency Please!

2001-04-23 Thread OOzy Pal

Hello Guys

I doing a dual boot and I am trying to adjust the boot
menu. In MDK 7.2 everything was listed in a file
called menu.lst. However, this file disappeared in Mdk
8.0. What's up with that? Mdk are doing well as far as
user interface which will attract a lot of people and
I hope they stay consistent.
