Re: [newbie] laptop install
Hi! I have Mandrake 7.0-2 on an Inspiron 3800. I had some problems with the install but once I did the partioning manually everything worked fine. However, my machine (acquired in June last year) comes with a built-in Winmodem which is not supported by Mandrake 7.0-2. Same thing with the ESS soundcard (actually, the modem and the soundcard is the same hardware), but I think Mandrake 7.2 supports the soundcard. Don't know about the modem, though. I'm using DSL (via a PCMCIA Ethernet card and Roaring Penguins pppoe-software) and that works great. There are som really good resources on installing Linux on laptops on the Web. You can probably find them by searching for Linux and Inspiron 3800, but let me know if you want me to dig out the URL. I've got it somewhere... [newbie] Missing strstream.h when compiling ncurses...
Hi, this relates to an earlier posting of mine. I tried to compile ncurses 5.1 from scratch since I need ncurses.h for another software package, and the compile breaks with missing "strstream.h" (apparently belongs to the c++ library). What have I done wrong, such that I seem to miss so many important header files :(? Did I perhaps choose the wrong install method for Mandrake (can't remember what I chose)? Any easy way to get a reasonable set of needed header files? I suppose I need a development install, but I'd hate to have to reinstall the whole thing... Any ideas, please? [newbie] Missing ncurses.h when installing ALSA sound card drivers
Hi, I didn't get any reply to my first posting so I'll try once more and keep my fingers crossed... Problem: When installing ALSA sound card drivers the compilation of the utils package stops with the error "missing ncurses.h". How do I install this file in the easiest way? Background: Dell Inspiron 3800 dual-boot laptop with W98 and Mandrake 7.0-2. Unfortunately Mandrake lacks drivers for my ESS Maestro-3i sound card. The latest ALSA release does support this card, but when I try to compile the utils package it can't find ncurses.h. True enough, this file is not on my system even though I have ncurses 5.1-8mdk installed. I'd rather not have to mess too much with ncurses, as almost every other software seems to depend on it (!), so how do I get the right ncurses.h installed in the least messy way? Do I have to risk a forced uninstall of ncurses, downloading the source code and compiling/installing from scratch? [newbie] Missing ncurses.h
Hi! I'm trying to install the ALSA sound drivers for my ESS Maestro-3i sound card (I have a dual-boot Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop with Win 98 and Mandrake 7.0-2). When compiling the ALSA utils, I get the error that ncurses.h cannot be found. True enough, the file is nowhere to be found. I have ncurses 5.1-8mdk installed, but there are no header files included with that package. How do I install the ncurses header files in the simplest way? Everything seems to depend on ncurses so I'd rather not mess with it too much. I've tried downloading the source code for v. 5.1 from gnu.org but the compile failed because something else was missing, and I don't want to have to install more and more... I've been down that road before. Apparently, there is something wrong with 5.1-8mdk source package at rpmfind and they do not recommend it, so I did not try that. Any help is appreciated, as I'd love a little sound... Olof __ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape Webmail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com/
[newbie] pcmcia eth0 not started by network script
Hi, /etc/rc.d/init.d/network fails to start my pcmcia ethernet card, apparently because I'm missing the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. How should this file look? I've taken a peek at ifcfg-lo (loopback), but it contains some data I do not have for the eth0 device, such as IP-address (I connect via a DSL-modem using Roaring Penguins PPPoE software). Note that the ethernet card and my DSL-connection work fine if I start up eth0 manually using 'ifconfig eth0 up mtu 1500'. It is an incovenience, though. My setup is Mandrake 7.0-2 (kernel 2.2.14-15mdk) on a Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop. The ethernet card is from 3COM and is recognized by the pcmcia software upon booting. Please reply directly or cc me as I had to leave the list some time back because of the volume of mail. Thanks, Olof
