[newbie] OFF Topic: Unix TTY Config Question
I know this is off topic but most ppl with linux exp have some unix.(openserver 5.06). Are server runs a distribution package that prints to both spooled and direct(/dev/ttyx). I am migrating the information from the old server to a new. How do I configure a tty port to the correct settings to match my printers? If i use print manager then everything works like a champ but if I use the tty port then at about 2 or 3 pages everything gets garbled. I am assuming this is a handshaking issue. Thanks. Re: [newbie] LILO substitute?
You could use a boot disk to boot linux. That way with out the disk windows loads with the disk linux loads. If you install windows then linux/lilo you shouldn't have any problems and if you do all you need to do is boot to a dos floppy and run fdisk mbr. which will erase lilo. why use smbtar over tar? I am backuping a folder on one nt machine to a folder on another nt machine. ( its a temp thing) I mount both folders on my laptop using samba. However for large memory configurations (>512 MB), this rule is not valid, and smaller sizes are preferred. Says to double your ram to create your swap file then it contradicts itself. Can someone explain exactly how this should be done and maybe some theory behind it? I don't just like knowing how I like to now why. Thanks. [newbie] internet monitoring
Is there a way to setup up Linux so that it restricts access to all internet sites that I don't specify? Can this be done an a user/usergroup setting. Example. I only want some people to only be able to access. www.cnet.com (and all child sites www.cnet.com/*.* ) and I want management to be able to access 5 or 6 more sites. Can I do this with a Linux box between my network and my dsl router? Can I also set it up to had out ip addresses? There is windows software (surf control) that does this same thing but it cost around 2 grand and then you have to have another win2k server setup so all of a sudden my cost for this little task is around 5 thousand. I need some kind of term emulater. I need to attach to unix box and run are distribution software. Thourghbred in case you wanted to know. But If i telnet I get this strange error which I have never seen. Currently we have terminals attached to the unix box that log in with no problem and we have windows machines running tiny term to attach form windows with no problem. Neither of these methods have caused any problems in the past. here is the error. wow that was really odd. I just went back into the software to regenrate the error and now it trys to let me in but the screen is jarbled but the error is missing. It was there yesterday also. I wonder if i will only recieve that error once each time i boot. But if that is true then I am very confused. I think because telnet doesn't support SCO ansi the screen gets garbled. I have tried to install minicom but I can't get it to work. Paul Kraus P.S. I am running evolve and I can't believe Microsoft hasn't sued. Its a 100% knock off of outlook. RE: [newbie] Probably should be a new thread (Startup Files)
First of all thanks for the info that everyone has providided. How do I create a file that will run at start up? Other rpms may or may not work, but rpm protects against installing programs conflicting with those already installed. With dozens of vendors and thousands of program writers, it is surprising that most programs do instll and work. For MS Office files, you can use StarOffice which will handle them mostly correctly. Some others will as well, like HAncom Office; however be advised that license agreements generally prohibit reverse engineering for the purpose of importing data and as soon as UCITA passes in Washington State, Microsoft will have the full force and effect of law in those agreements--probably the end of compatibility forever. When you find the executable in the directory (and they should generally install to /opt/(packagename) if they are compliant with the Filesystem Huerarchical Standard) You can make that directory path and filename into a command line for the icon you can create by right-clicking on the desktop. Further, inn the process of that icon creation, you can link the application to specific mimetypes (like soffice for .doc files). The basic primers you seek are right on your system if you elected to install documentation-- Civileme Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

I just setup a dual boot system running xp pro and mandrake 8.1. I installed xp first on a fat32 4.5 gig partion. I then installed manrake on another 4.5 partion and used default install options. Everything worked great. Not one problem. However when in linux/kde I don't have any connectivity to my network at work. Or my cable modem at home. We have dhcp server at work and I figured it would configure itself. I tried going into kde and changing setting but to be honest I have about 10mins worth of exp in linux, Any help would be apperiated. Paul Kraus Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
