[newbie] Hardware problem. Keeps rebooting/freezing.
A couple of months ago, we had a power surge at our house that harmed the computer. Although the computer was on a surge protector, the cable modem was not, and it fried the eth0 on the motherboard. I have since have had a difficulty whenever I try to transfer large files on the hard drive. When I try, my computer restarts or freezes. I have since replaced the mobo (Soyo Dragon Plus SY-KT600), my memory, and my hard drive. Changing my hard drive and motherboard made no change. My computer would alternately freeze or reboot during the installation phase. After installing new memory (from Crucial, specifically for my new mobo), my computer doesn't even boot properly, and never gets to the menus in the mandrake install cd. -- Paul Rodriguez <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] In-Wall home networking question
Hi, I have been having a discussion with the [expert] list but I wanted some input from this list as well. I recently did some renovation on my house. While all of the walls were open, I had the electrician wire cat5 through my home, going from each outlet (about 18) to the basement. I was looking for the best way to have them all accessible to the internet (via dsl/cable modem). Also I want to be able to just plug in my wireless access point to any plug and have it work, and do the same with a network printer. There is a company called Leviton that sells modular home networking equipment. For about $600, I can buy some supplies through them to hook up my system in one central location in the basement. It looks pretty sweet, and consists of: 2 White Steel boxes w/access panel (one for routers, etc. and a little one for excess cable) 1 24-port ethernet/phone panel 1 4-port Internet Gateway 3 8-port Ethernet Switches and 1 little shelf for my cable/dsl modem I can also add on a surge protector and UPS. Leviton has images of all their products online, here are pictures of all the parts in order: http://www.levitonvoicedata.com/structuredmedia/smc420.asp http://www.levitonvoicedata.com/structuredmedia/smc140.asp http://www.levitonvoicedata.com/structuredmedia/24portsmp.asp http://www.levitonvoicedata.com/structuredmedia/4PortInternetGateway.asp http://www.levitonvoicedata.com/structuredmedia/ethernetswitches.asp SO, my question is, is it worth it? $600 doesn't seem so bad for all this stuff. I might be able to route my telephone and cable/satellite through here, too. (Though the jury is still out on that due to old wiring.) It seems like an elegant solution. Am I better off just getting a really big switch and use a computer as a gateway? - Paul -- Paul Rodriguez <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] DV Cameras for tthe holidays
Hi, I'm sorry if this has been covered, I just resubscribed. My dad recently switched to Linux, and he's been hinting to EVERYBODY that he wants a DV camera for Christmas. Re: [newbie] OpenOffice Spell Checker.
I had a similar problem getting extra language dictionaries. The folks in #openoffice.org at irc.openprojects.org were very helpful. In Mandrake, we just need the appropriate myspell packages to be installed, so make sure that the corresponding myspell package for the language you are looking for (presumably English) is installed. For example: myspell-en_US-1.0.1-0.20020626.4mdk.noarch.rpm I find that if I have a program the should be working but isn't, sometimes a forced upgrade of that programs helps if the program was improperly installed without my knowledge. Running rpm -Uvh --force myspell-en_US-1.0.1-0.20020626.4mdk.noarch.rpm from a console as root (assuming that file is in my local directory) has resolved problems like this for me. I hope this helps. Also, make sure that you have the proper dictionary chosen in Tools->Options->Language Settings->Languages Hope this helps. - Paul On Tue, 2002-11-19 at 14:55, Malcolm Candlish wrote: > Hello, > > Can any one suggest a method of getting OO Spell Checker in Mandrake 9.0 > working. > > I have looked around without finding information, except at > www.openoffice.org from whence I downloaded > 'OOodi-static-0.55-0.i386.rpm'. [newbie] Galeon instability revisited.
Hi, all. I mentioned earlier that I was having stability issues in Galeon on several different machines, both upgrades and fresh installs. I tried deleting the .galeon folder, also running some cleanup scripts. I also run galeon without the soundwrapper option, but still unstable. I am writing now again, because I am being told by several users that the program is becoming so inconvenient as a result of the crashes to be almost unusable. It seems to happen most often when selling on Amazon and EBay, but frequently occurs on other sites as well. - Paul Rodriguez Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] galeon search
Well, I just upgraded my system from 8.2 to 9.0. In 8.2 typing a word without a suffix in the galeon address bar took me to [thatword].com. This is the behavior that I would prefer. There does not seem to be a place to specify which behavior I would like. Secondly, the current "search" page it sends me to (ultimatesearch) is not acceptable. It does not even do the search for you, it just leaves you on the index page. This is a bug which needs to be fixed. - Paul On Fri, 2002-11-08 at 14:01, Technoslick wrote: > I did this in Galeon: > > cnn > > I got: > > "keyword:cnn" in Google, with the search results in the browser's window. > > I did this: > > cnn.com > > And got http://www.cnn.com/, which is what is expected by most of us. > > Are you saying that you 'are', or 'are not', typing the suffix (i.e; .com, > .net, .org...) when you enter only a partial URL? > > If you do not type in a the suffix, it will assume that you are asking for a > search on that word. [newbie] TOTAL MESS! [was: switching video cads (what do i need to do?)]
Yikes! I took out my ATI card and put in the nvidia card. Would not startx at all. Kudzu did not recognize the change. I then ran xfdrake, told it I was using a generic Nvidia Geforce4. Wouldn't startx. I downloaded the nvidia drivers, installed them, edited my XFree config file, and voilá! X and 3D acceleration! Sweet! glxgears and that 3d lightcycle game ran great. Then I did 3 things: 1) Changed the driver/module that dealt with the sound card to emuk101 or whatever in hardrake for my creative live! sound card. 2) Changed the shorewall settings to allow SSH access. 3) Then, when I was done with that, I tried to run Chromium. This locked my system up. I could not do anything but wait (5 min) then reset the computer. The computer was totally messed up and would not startx, connect to the internet at all (I have a cable modem and it said something about not being able to initialize IPv6), and I also noticed that it would not save my bash history when I restart my computer. I think the only thing I can do is try a fresh reinstall. [newbie] 3D Graphics card for 9.0? (3 questions)
Hi, I purchased an ATI Radeon 8500 for my dad's machine thinking it would have good 3D acceleration support, being that it wasn't the latest 9000 and that it's on the Mandrake supported hardware list. Plus, I like to use open source drivers. As it turns out, the 8500 does not seem to have any 3D Acceleration support in Mandrake 9.0 according to those who I have talked to, and won't for some time. The ATI supplied drivers are also incompatible with 9.0. As I just got my RMA approved, I need to find a substitute. 1) What other options do I have? Should I go with another ATI, or something else? I hear Nvidia's are good. 2) Who makes a good Nvidia card? 3) Should I go with a Geforce3 or a Geforce4? I have a Hercules Geforce3 at home, and I am not happy with it. Re: [newbie] burning ISOs
Hi, T. It may be the drive, but if so, I'm not sure if getting a new one from Dell will fix it. To clarify my problem: * My Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop will not read the Mandrake 9.0 ISOs I have created. * The same CDs work fine on other machines (like my desktop). * My laptop has not had any issues with previous Mandrake ISOs, only 9.0. * My laptop can read most 80min cd's (e.g. if I burn a cd with some data files), just not the Mandrake ISOs. Some troubleshooting attempts I have made: Different 80min media (Iomega, etc.) Using Gtoaster and cdrecord at different speeds Using the '-dao' option in cdrecord If, as may be the case, my laptop drive simply can not read an 80 min cd loaded as full as the Mandrake ones are, what can I do? I have already requested a replacement drive from Dell. It should be arriving shortly (my hope is that a newer drive version will have more compatability). If that doesn't work, then what? I would very much prefer not to install from the hard drive. I feel a little frustrated having recently paid my Mandrake dues for a product I can't use. In the early beta phase I suggested a different ISO be made available for people having trouble, and I still think this is a good idea. I'm sure I'll work this out with the help of the list, and I appreciate your reply, T. - Paul On Sun, 2002-09-29 at 19:05, Technoslick wrote: > I see that your Dell Inspiron 7500 either has a CD-ROM/Floppy Drive or > DVD-ROM/Floppy Dive unit in the Media Bay. Re: [newbie] Tips or Shortcut key in Gnome or KDE ...
Actually I may be wrong, but I think this is set up in your window manager, not the desktop environment (i.e. sawfish, instead of gnome). These sorts of key bindings are usually configurable and you should be able to make your own no matter what keybindings you use. I don't have too much experience with KDE yet, so I'm not sure what the status of using multiple window managers with it is. [newbie] rpmdrake peculiarities
When I install an upgrade to a program, it often shows up in rpmdrake as being an older version when I check for updates. This is because, for example, if I upgrade a version of my program X from version x-0.5-mdk to x-0.6, the mandrake rpms actually get listed not as version 0.5, but as version 1:0.5. Why is this? Re: [newbie] ATI vs. Nvidia drivers [OT]
I forgot to mention that I frame this discussion in light of the currently available ATI (open source drivers) and Nvidia (closed sourced drivers). I myself have one Nvidia card. It works very well using the binary-only drivers. The only issue that I have is that on my particular system, it takes 1 minute to load X when I load it with the Nvidia supplied driver. Just a quirk. Small but annoying. I would love to be able to fix it by helping debug the issue. Needless to say Nvidia is not exactly very interested or polite about trying to resolve the issue. - Paul Rodriguez Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] New dumb CLI question
If you have ethernet network cards instead of modems, you can bring down/up your device with the "ifup eth0" or "ifdown eth0" commands. This is assuming you only have on network card. For each subsequent card you can raise the integer after "eth" by one. - Paul Rodriguez New York GNU/Linux Scene http://www.NYLXS.com On Sun, 2002-05-26 at 01:30, Dale Huckeby wrote: > > From the command line. [newbie] laptop volume control after resume
I can control my laptop's volume with the "fn"+"PageUP/PageDOWN" keys. But after i resume my laptop from sleep (it sleeps when i close the cover) I lose keyboard volume control. Gnome multimedia applet still works, though. Anybody know how i can fix this? Is there some sort of deamon that needs to run? _paul Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] problem remembering program states?
For some reason, I have begun having a problem on most of my programs where they will not remember the last state. For example, Galeon repeatedly asks for confirmation regarding information sending of unencrypted data, and will only remember my answer for the current session. Xchat opens very small and won't remember preferences across sessions. What's going on? My drive is not full, and I haven't made any major system changes. - Paul Rodriguez New York Linux Scene www.NYLXS.com Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] virtual desktops
For some reason I don't have the settings set to switch between virtual desktops using keystrokes. How can I set my linux box (using 7.1) to switch between these using alt+function keys? I'm particularly interested in going to console or text mode (full-screen). Also, is there any way to do this without the keyboard shortcuts? BTW, I use Gnome as my UI. RE: [newbie] ppp established but...
I've been having the same problem. I don't think it's the ISP because before I reinstalled Linux (this time in expert mode, though still mostly using the defaults)this ISP worked fine. Is there something I have to setup special to get acess to the internet? My security level is set to medium, just like it used to be. I'm also not sure if I need to set up any server activity to start up as I load Linux or not (special to get internet to work, I mean). I hope that wasn't too convoluted, in any case, same problem as below. -Paul R peter.schawacker wrote: After I dial in to my ISP and establish a ppp connection, I can't do anything. Trying to telnet gets the following message: host name lookup failure no matter what machine I try to dial into. Netscap gives me the following: unable to locate the server home.netscape.com. Can anyone shed some light on this dilemna? I've been using Red Hat on another machine for the last two years with no problems. Thanks. __ Do You Yahoo!? >From homework help to love advice, Yahoo!
