RE: [newbie] Re:Setting up Scanssh

2003-01-05 Thread Ralph M. Los
Here's the weird thing - I've done a stock install of MDK 9 and I've
gotten the missing gcc error before too! I know I've compiled stuff
before with gcc, but certain programs (configure scripts) just refuse to
see it. Is there any tidbit of wisdom that could point me and this
fellow in the right direction? Something you pros already know to look
for?

Thanks -

I think this is where I make my twice weekly post about how many useful
applications like scanssh are in the online 'Contrib' folder as rpms,
and if
you declare Contrib to be a urpmi source you can install them and all
their
dependencies at once.

OK - this one's a bit weird. I follow the instructions for installing
PHP 4.2.3 on Apache2, and here's what I get when I do the 'make'. Let
me know if this makes any sense to y'all?

stub.lo: file not recognized: File truncated

make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/ralph/download/php-4.2.3'

OK - I'm baffled. I don't quite know where to go from here.

Thanks for any advice?

[newbie] Sound "issues"

2002-11-29 Thread Ralph M. Los

Hey all, just got my Linux 9 distro installed on this WinXP dual-boot box. I have to
say, the sound in WinXP whoops the sound I get in Linux. What can I do to fix that?

Also, I have a few other miscellanious questions for the list:
1. What's a good "file manager" type application? Nautilus plain sucks.
2. What do you all use for burning data CD's? XCD Roast is only for audio copying as
far as I can tell?
3. -GRIPE- My Radeon 7500 AIW doesn't work for TV-in or anything, how disappointing :(
Anyone have a way of "making it work"?

OK - I have a boot option on my BIOS, so I decided (for kicks) to boot
off of what was "SCSI Disk", which is my IDE-RAID on-board card (K7V333

seconds for LINUX to start booting, but when it did, it flew and works
GREAT. Weird

Do you have more than one hard drive?
I am wondering if you are writing Lilo to one hard drive and your Bios
is
booting from the other.

Also did you try Grub? I do not use it myself, but it is real easy to
switch.
No need for a reinstall. Just go through the 'Boot' section in Mandrake
Control Centre.

Has anyone on the list tried using the Radeon All-in-Wonder 7500R? The
fact that I don't see support for it is the ONLY thing keeping me in

Http://216.36.108.141/ Mozilla ask for the flash plugin. IE 6.0 and
Netscape do not show the buttons of place markers with flash installed.
Nothing shows in the mouse over except "I" which is taged to show it is
a swf file. www.boundariez.com shows the buttons, but are not linked
to anything. So my guess is you have a file permittion problem with your
flash files.

You mean...you DO get the option to see the buttons?! I have

In Mozilla I'm told that I need to download the Flash plugin, which I
promptly cancel. Have you tested on other browsers/machines?

Also, after you make any changes to Apache config files, be sure you
stop and restart the service.

In /etc/httpd/conf/commonhttpd.conf, look for the line that starts with
DirectoryIndex any you can list your preferred default "index" page.

[newbie] Those "USB Thumb drives"...

2002-10-15 Thread Ralph M. Los

Hey,
One thing I haven't figured out how to do is how to get my
128-meg Thumb Drive (USB-based disk) to work as a "hot plug" into linux.
I can do it with WinXP and Win2k all day long which I use on a regular
basis as a FAT filesystem. These things are SO useful!

Does anyone know of a way to get them to work as a hot-plug
mount/dismount under Linux Mdk 9.0?

Thanks in advance!!

Linked to the wrong version of GTK?...uhh...How would I do that? I
followed the same steps I always did...
 ./configure <--this went fine...
 make <--bombed here
 make install

I'm giving up on this for now, maybe someone out there has a similar
problem, maybe not, and maybe...oh well, maybe a future release of the
code will work with my installation. Kind of upset though...would still
like input as I have the files sitting here ready to compile at moments'
notice.

Lots more (about 12 screens full) of "parse errors". I'm not sure what
to do with this. Like I said, ld.so.conf has the correct path to my

accessing the directories, and again, gtk-config shows paths that are

they all exist and live in the paths on my system.

Well, you may have got more errors, but that's okay. You will never
compile
if you can't find the gtk.h file you need.

What were the errors you received?

RE: [newbie] Gtk/gtk.h: No such file or directory

2002-10-12 Thread Ralph M. Los

Why would anyone want to compile their own program when they can get the
pre-packaged version? Gee...I'm getting criticized for avoiding the
mindless program installation and trying to learn something along the
way...sorry I guess?

There is already a Mandrake rpm available for it so why do you need to
compile it.

Well, I've already tried that :( which is kinda crappy because it caused
more errors to fly by than the original problem! I just don't get
it...is there something wrong with this intallation? Is gtk screwed up?
Is there something wrong with the source potentially?

Is there anything else I could send into the list to help diagnose and
solve this problem?

Well, I'm not sure what it is that you're trying to compile, but it
seems like
it is expecting the gtk.h to be located at /usr/include/gtk/gtk.h. That
is
not where your gtk.h file is located. So, if possible you need to
determine
whether whatever you are compiling is hoping to use gtk 1.2 or gtk 2.0.
Then
when you find out, you can make a temporary link in /usr/include to
satisfy
this make file.

ln -s /usr/include/gtk-1.2/gtk /usr/include/gtk
-or-
ln -s /usr/include/gtk-2.0/gtk /usr/include/gtk

I'd probably delete the link once you successfully compile this. Note
that
there may be a more elegant way of dealing with this problem.

RE: [newbie] Windblows

2002-10-10 Thread Ralph M. Los

I've converted my laptop to Mandrake 9 now, but still find it mandatory
to use my old WInXP partition (although I hate it more every day) only
because I am so heavily dependant on Outlook (MAPI
messaging/scheduling/groupware), and things like the CheckPoint mgnt
console, other security-object management consoles which are built for
Winblows, etc. At home I'm still using XP because I like my ATI Radeon
7500+remote card and haven't been able to find a place on the web that
describes how to get that working well...and ATI sure doesn't support
LINUX too well, heh.

I'm hoping that the tide starts to turn even faster so that my Inspiron
8100 can be converted entirely to LINUX from my pathetically unstable
WinXP platform.

If anyone can recommend some good software to reduce my dependance on
Outlook, Visio, etc, PLEASE DO SO, I'm open to suggestions. I'm in one
of those positions to recommend...we have a couple fortune 10 clients at
work...one of them is quite dependant on us for their security as well
as other intiativesI only regret that this is the best place I've
found for LINUX support.there aren't very many "active" message
boardssure mandrake-user.org has posts but...you get one reply
every, what, week?

Thanks guys - let's keep the ball rolling!!

If the military makes changes to OOo and the binaries of those changes
stay
in-house, then they are not violating the GPL if the code stays in-house
as
well. The violation would only occur if they distributed the binaries,
which
in your scenario of a raised security classification wouldn't happen.
They
would not distribute the binaries or the source. So, all is still well
as
far as I can tell.

[newbie] Checking MS-Exchange (MAPI) email in Linux?

2002-10-03 Thread Ralph M. Los

Hey wizards,
Thought I'd post this one. I just got my nVIDIA working and smokin' last night, and
now I'm sitting at the office forced to boot into my WInXP partition because I need
Outlook for messaging/calendar/group-ware type of activity. I found an "Exchange
connector" for Evolution email client - but that's a $69 product! There HAS to be
someone open-source which won't cost me $70 bux to hook into Exchange with my Linux
build? Running Mandrake 9.0 here in case it's relevant.

It was the fact that the KERNEL I had installed was one for 8.2. All I

XF86Config-4 a bit and things work. Thanks for the quick answer!

Like the subject line says - I can't get a SINGLE X-server config to

I've tried the defaults it gives (nVidia2 (generric) + flat panel

Ditto Damians remarks. It's a fairly subjective choice with lots of
strongly held opinions.

I use a number of different file systems on a number of distributions.

RH7.3: ext2 for boot and ext3 for everything else. Never any problems
can convert ext2 to ext3 (which is a journaling fs) non-destructively.
My subjective impression is that it's slower than the two other
journaling sytems I describe below.

Mandrake 8.2: Reiser and ext2. I did have a filecorruption problem a
long time ago with the reiser fs but it was fixed without any lost data
by reiserfsck.

Gentoo 1.2: ext2 (for boot) and XFS. Gentoo is very negative about
Reiser and offers kernel source optimized for XFS. So I went that route.
No problems to date (about 2 months for my main system). Seems about as
quick as Reiser. The problem is that RH 7.3 doesn't support XFS and so I
can't mount my XFS partitions under RH (but I can mount RH under gentoo
which is generally how I'm running).

YMMV.

[newbie] Getting "mount -t smbfs" to connect to a windows Fileserver share!

Hey all,

Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Always seems to fail no
matter what with an error message I can't seem to figure out.

Command I'm trying to use:
  Mount -t smbfs -o username=me,password="pass word" //10.0.2.1/share
/mnt/win

Output from mount...
23330: session request to 10.0.2.1 failed (Called name not present)
23330: session request to 10 failed (Called name not present)
23330: session setup failed: ERRDOS - ERRnoaccess (Access denied.)
  SMB connection failed

Huh? What does that mean? Can it not find the server, or am I
giving it an invalud username/password somehow? The password I use has
a space in it, so I assume the quotes are necessary?

Thanks in advance.

I have always been a huge fan of ReiserFS, but I also like XFS, but
lately I have been using EXT3 for everything..

There is a site online, I think the guys name is Rainer Link (I think)
and he works for SUSE.

and he has a site about getting speed out of EXT3, and how to turn
options on and off for their various uses...

He has some benchmarks that show when this is done intelligently, it
yeilds performance compariable to Reiser and XFS.

Also, for most applications, the difference between them is relatively
small.

being able to mount as EXT2 if needed is handy too.

[newbie] Mandrake 9 in "high security" mode...tearing my hair out!

2002-09-26 Thread Ralph M. Los

Hey all,

I must be more of a noob than I thought. Apparently, I expected
to install with "high security" mode, and have a semi-functioning system
which I can at a later date "open up" as needed, right? Apparently I'm
either doing something wrong, or something's not working.

I've got VNC and SSH running on the box. SSH starts with the
system now so it uses the hosts.allow --> "SSH :ALL". I'm extremely
fuzzy about how this file works in relation to the grand scheme of
things...when the hosts.allow/hosts.deny files are read, for which
purposes/daemons, etc? I CAN connect via SSH, no problem, but I
obviously can't do a "VNC :ALL" on that box since it doesn't know "vnc"
is a service...so I figured, OK, it's a firewalling issue. I researched
some basics on this shorewall firewall, and here's the "Default + my
mods" I've got.

Chain INPUT (policy DROP)
target prot opt source destination
LOGtcp -- anywhere anywhere state NEW
tcp spts:1024:65535 dpt:5093 LOG level warning
ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere state NEW

ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere state NEW
tcp spts:1024:65535 dpt:ssh
..
..
..

Obviously, with this in place I thought I should SURELY make VNC's port
5903 open to the general publicwrong! I still get myself dropped,
according to the syslog, but here's a snip.

Can anyone explain this to me? What's net2all? PLEASE drop me
a clue on writing rules for the shorewall IPTABLES firewall, the whole
"high security" model and what its' functions may entail?

Thanks - I appreciate this a ton...
