I have a small drive in a removable bay that I backup all important documents to (as well as tape) so in the event of something going wrong, I can quickly take said drive to any other PC and have access to the data. You have to separate Linux server and desktop usage. In terms of boxes on desks, Linux is a very little penguin. Is there an easy way to get the system to anti-alias, or does it work out of the box? If it's not working out of the box, is it a reasonable thing to work towards this for the next release? If so, maybe we can incorporate working anti-aliasing into Mandrake packaged programs as well? (like abiword) How do you feel about this? -Paul Rodríguez _ Do You Yahoo!? I don't see > this as a quick way to bring MS down with one swoop but everything has a > beginning and this could be it. Linux, despite being close, is not a windows desktop beater, it requires far to much 'twiddling' to get it all working correctly and a much higher level of knowledge to maintain and use it - some suit can push it all they like, but if its not at least as user friendly as windows, its not going to catch on with the general public. box makers have tried Linux on machines, and it has flopped, simply due to lack of public interest. The fact that their is a wide spread (ok geek community ) alternative that is constantly improving and gaining ground will be enough to make MS feel a little less secure Rick Kitty5 WebDesign - http://Kitty5.com POV-Ray News & Resources - http://Povray.co.uk TEL : +44 (01270) 501101 - FAX : +44 (01270) 251105 - ICQ : 15776037 PGP Public Key http://pgpkeys.mit.edu:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0x231E1CEA Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Linux versus WindowsXP Haredware
Linux versus WindowsXP HaredwareUntil hardware manufacturers start including Linux drivers with their products (at the very least even a biniary module), Linux hardware support is not going to happen. Most consumers like to be able to buy 'hardware item X' off the shelf at the local shop and then expect it to work when they get home this is not an issue that can be solved by trying to get consumers to only buy Linux capable hardware, as this will only add to the confusion surrounding Linux, this must be addressed at the point of manufacture. A prime example being win modems, simply telling people to buy a real modem is not the answer - your not the one who is out of pocket) Linux hardware installation needs to be made as simple as windows, plug item it, install drivers from CD (reboot - who cares) and it works end of story I have a fair sized collection of items here that i cannot use with Linux as there is either no supoport, or the howto explaining how to get it working will most likely take a day out of my life, and have the possability that i will knacker something else in the process. With all the trouble with WindowsXP having all these hardware issues, isn't it about time to get our thinking caps on and re-focus our attention on the fact at this moment in time we have an opportunity to exploit Linux hardware capabilities. One guy saying he couldn't get his USB keyboard to work under WinXP where Linux could is a prime example. Okay so WindowsXP has almost rock solid stability, but for the first time ever, LINUX SUPPORTS MORE HARDWARE!!!. We need to push this at this time before Microsoft gets it's act together. What are your thoughts on this and I hope it will inspire someone on this mailing list to push this further. This may be the invunerability that could drag Microsoft to its knees.
