Re: [newbie] PHP commandline
Paul, I read a little of that article too. I believe it was from Linux Journal. IIRC, it stated that it was included by default if you compiled PHP by yourself. It went on to give a command you could issue (php -v, I believe) that would let you know whether or net CLI support was included. Hope that helps. Good luck. [newbie] Mandrake Business Troubles
Gang: I was sent an E-mail with a web page attached that said Mandrake was having money troubles and fired all of their American CEOs. I'm at work so I can't mail the page as it's at home, but if anyone is interested I will mail it to the list for anyone to check out, if you like. I'm a little worried. Riker

Re: [newbie] Boxed Set
I was in the same boat as you. I bought 7.2 thinking it was a full and complete package and only later found out it wasn't. At the time I didn't have an high speed Internet connection, so purchasing was my only recourse. This time, however, I downloaded it first and checked out what I was supposed to be getting and then bought it. It's all there. I believe this to be a "complete" package. And, I'm not sure if they did this or not, seems a little more stable than the version I downloaded. Not sure if it could just have been a better installation. I just bought the boxed set from Wal-Mart of 8.0 for $25.00 and the only thing that has really disappointed me are the lack of CDs. There are only three this time instead of four. I can't complain too much, though, you still get a lot more with Mandrake than you do with $indwos. Riker
[newbie] PcTel and Mandrake 8.0
Hello: Has anyone had any luck or even made the attempt at getting the Pctel micromodem working the 8.0 betas that are out? It works great in 7.2 and I would like to get it working in 8.0 beta3 so when the final version comes out, I'm ready and can make the transition. If any has any idea where I can get a module and the install instructions, I would greatly appreciate it. Regards, Riker
[newbie] "No screens found" error - help?
Have a problem a need a little help. A friend is trying to install Linux on his new board and everything goes swimmingly until X tries to start and then it dies and gives a "no screens found" error. I have tried editing fx86config manually to no avail. Has anyone got any thoughts? Here are the specs: Asus CUSL2-C system board Intel 815ep chipset. Ati xpert2000 with Rage 128 chipset (I know this works with Mandrake, I'm using it on my machine at this time) 256meg of Ram 15 gig Maxtor Hard drive We've tried Mandrake 7.2, Corporate Server, 8.0 Beta 2 and nothing seems to work. We've tried video cards that I've used in Linux before but none of them seem to work. I know you will need more information, I'm just not sure what is needed for sure. There are no IRQ conflicts and we've tried installing with nothing but the video card, disabled all the com ports and usb stuff, and still nothing. We got the information for the monitor and entered it by hand and made sure we had the right driver selected. I'm stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Riker

Here is the page I used to get it setup. Re: WAAAYYY OT! (Was: Re: [newbie] 8.0 Beta)
To this stupid thread! I invited a friend over to experience the wonders of Linux Mandrake and to learn just what it could do for him. I thought, "I will show him the message list so he can observer, in action, the support he can expect." Low and behold all this garbage was floating around and he made the comment, "Wow, can I expect this crap all the time?" I quickly pointed out that this was not the norm, but I'm pissed that what was a great support list has become filled with crap that has nothing to do with Linux. I feel embarrased that new people will sign up and see this kind of behavior on a list that is for Mandrake support only, not this other crap. [newbie] Installing WinXows again
Hi: Do to the poor quality of a certain operating system, I'm having to reinstall it on a duel boot system. Linux is still running great (both were installed on the same day) and I don't want to lose it, but given the nature of WinXos, I will lose LILO and GRUB. After reinstalling the other operating system, how do I put my friend LILO and GRUB back in? I know this involves booting with the boot disk, but just not sure what cammands I need to run to get Linux back in control. Thanks, Riker
Re: [newbie] Monitor goes dead.
I had a similar problem with an S3 TRIO and the only way I could get the card to work was during the installation processes. Boot from the CD and hit F1 when the CD first boots (you should see and option for it). Then type 'vgalo' in the command line. Once I did this, my video came up and worked pretty good. Hopes this helps, 'cause I know how frustrating this problem can be. I worked on it for three weeks in my spare time. Please let me know if this was a help, as I'm a newbie myself. :) Riker Charley & Peggy Robinson wrote: > > I loaded L-M 7.2 Complete on my K6-2 based PC w/Diamond stealth 3d > video board and SVGA monitor. [newbie] NFS Not supported
Hello: I was trying, once again, to setup NFS between two Linux boxes. I've tried several times to make this work (they tell me it's easy) and now I have a very important reason to do so now. My boss wants to see Linux in action and part of that means on a network. I'm practicing here at home. Both machines are networked and can share the internet connection of RIKER. I consider RIKER the server and LONDO client. All are Linux Mandrake 7.2. I set up RIKER to serve to the others. RIKER's export file: /mnt/cdrom (ro) /mnt/zip(rw) /home londo(rw) I'm following a book here so not real sure this is as it should look. The FSTAB entry looks like this on LONDO: riker:/home homeNFS I save the changes on LONDO and then type: mount riker:/home then I get the error "NFS not supported by kernel." Souldn't this be built into the kernel. I've added the NFS utilities RPM and PORTMAPPER and nothing seems to help. I'm at a loss and need to get going before my D-Day. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If more information is need I will be glad to give it, and if someone would like to help off-list, I would appreciate that even more. :) Riker

[newbie] Kernel Compiling Troubles
Hello: I finally installed all the source stuff needed to recompile the default kernel in Mandrake 7.2. It went very well. Since it was so easy, I decided to try compiling the 2.4.0-test12 kernel. I didn't have any trouble compiling it. Made may changes in GRUB and rebooted. I picked the right entry and it started to boot, but it got as far as "Uncompressing Linux... Okay to boot kernel" then it just freezes. Anyone familiar with this type of trouble? I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, so I humbly appologize if it's not. Thanks, Riker

Gang: I'm trying to install Mandrake 7.2 on my third system. The first two were walks through the doughnut shop, but this one is being a bit picky. Here is the problem: The installation goes wonderfully well, and when the system finishes, it reboots. It goes through the startup screens just fine and I get "okays" on everything, but when it switches to X it just fades to black. I can go into failsafe and then into X sometimes just fine. I'm just wondering what is happening when I boot normally. I believe it has something to do with resolution but I change that when I boot text mode and configure it manually. Nothing seems to work. It works if I use a Trident card and the video card having troubles works fine in Bill's operating system. Any thoughts? Well, come to find out the burner wasn't working properly so I took it out. [newbie] Graphical File Sharing
Hello: I have a qestion concerning file sharing in Linux-Mandrake. I have two computers networked together and can ping both machines and share the Internet. My question now is: How can I access the others machines file using a graphical interface? Is there a way to use Konquer to show my other machine when I open it? In 7.0 I was using the file manager to access the other machine and can't seem to figure out how to do it in 7.2. I'm very new to networking and believe that this may be a very simple problem to remedy. Thanks for taking the time to read the question and offering suggestions. Riker

I'm still surpised! I have to keep looking at the box to make sure I'm not delusional. But it's 7.2 Complete. Installed it last night, in fact. Anyone else see it at Wal-Mart??? [newbie] 7.2 Available in Stores???
Gang: I sent out a message earlier but I don't think it made it to the list. I went to Wal-Mart tonight to buy my brother Mandrake 7.0, and while looking through the software isle I found Mandrake 7.2. When was this released? I thought the beta version 3 had just been relase. Can someone tell me when the official release date was? Just curious 'cause I missed it. Riker -- Linux - The way of the future
[newbie] 7.2
When did 7.2 come out at the stores? Just bought it and wondered how long it had been out and I didn't know about it. :) Just curious. -- Linux - The way of the future
[newbie] Zip Drives
Hello: I have an internal (IDE) Zip drive in my box. It shows up during the booting process, but I can't seem to access it when I'm actually in linux. All my hardrives, CD-Roms, and floppies show up on the desktop. Is there a way to get the Zip to automatically show up there as well? Thanks, Riker -- Linux - The way of the future
[newbie] SoundCard/CrystalChipset
Greetings: I can't seem to get a sound card recognized in Mandrake; it's not showing up at all. The hardware support list says it should be supported, so there must be something conflicting, I guess. Anyone set up a card with a Crystal chipset before in Mandrake? It's a 423x model. Thanks, Riker -- Linux - The way of the future
[newbie] Networking Linux
Greetings, everyone: My name is Riker. I joined the list a couple days ago and have been enjoying the dialouge and exchanges that have taken place very much. I will ask my question first and then give some background afterward if anyone is interested in reading it. Will Linux-Mandrake, with one network card per machine (two machines - peer to peer), one with a dial up connection, share the internet? Been having some troubles getting it setup. Thanks a bunch! Background (Casual reading) I'm currently a computer technician and work on systems that only have Windows operating systems installed on them. I haven't been a technician for very long and am being educated daily on the limitations Windows has and the conundrums it seems to cause. I find it boorish and bloated, and with all the money we people spend on it, greatly over priced. About a year ago, I took a stab at Red Hat Linux and had great succes installing it and making it do the things I wanted it to do, but it would not run my WINMODEM (not its fault by any measure). So I went back to Windows full time. Not just becuse of Linux's inability to run my modem, but because I was working with Windows everyday and needed to bone up at home. Well, after seeing so much of Windows and its problems, I decided it was time to get a real operating system. Something that I could rely on to be there when I needed it. So, while perusing the isles of the local Wal-Mart, I saw a nice package with a big penguin on it. Linux-Mandrake. Done. I bought it without reservation and raced home to install it. I have had it on my system ever since and have almost forgotten Windows completely(Win2000 and WinME). The install was perfect and everything was detected without flaw. So now when someone comes into the shop and ask me what operating system they should run for realiablity and stability I say Linux without question. To boast a little more about Linux power, we've started receiving calls on how to setup Linux and what distrobution to use. I think Linux may be rounding the curve, finally. -- Linux - The way of the future
