The problem appeared after installing Gnome, what I did very recently. I am running mdk8.2 and the latest update rpms were installed. What is going on ? Is there a way to fix it for good ? Re: [newbie] Integerateed Development environment.
Hi, Unfortunately I don't know any comparison article about IDEs. As I told you, I am very newbie. Actually I am a college student who started learning C some months ago. I didn't know any IDE for linux, so I posted a message here and people told me to try Rhide, Anjuta, K-Develop and Xfce. I downloaded all of them and found that Anjuta suited better for me. One of the guys told me that K-Develop is quite powerful and it seemed so, but it had so many functions that I didn't need at that time neither did I know what they were for. Well, regardless each IDE's peculiarities, I think that it is more a taste issue, you find something that you like and start using it. In my case, I found Anjuta easier to use, because the programs I've written so far are very simple : ) Sorry, I think I can't help so much. Re: [newbie] Kernel source question...
Hi, I don't know if it will solve your problem, but it is worth to try. Take a look at the README file provided by Nvidia's tarball. If I remember correctly, you have to pass an argument, like "make SYSINCLUDE=/path-to-your-kernel-sources-include-directory, when you compile the driver for a different kernel. Before doing it, you have to install kernel-sources and kernel-headers. You can also get the source rpms from Nvidia's website, they worked fine for me. Hope it helps you, regards, Rodrigo Ronald J. Re: [newbie] Problems with realplayer8
Well, I don't know what these messages mean either :-( If you play around with real player a little bit you will find a configuration window. There you can set up some parameters to assure compatibility with your sound card. In my system it is set something like this, "use the os sound driver", and it works fine. I don't know whether it will help you, but that is all I know by now. Good luck and hope you succeed. Re: [newbie] NVIDIA after Kernel update?
Hi, I had the same problem after upgrading my kernel. If you try to reinstall the rpms you have, you will probably get an error message saying that they are not compatible with the new kernel or X will fail during start. I downloaded the tar.gz files and tried to compile them under the new kernel following Nvidia's step by step, but got and error message again kind of, "it is not compatible with this kernel bla bla bla " As I didn't find more help about this, I thought there were two options: 1- Using the new kernel and disabling "nvidia" (using "nv") 2- Using the old kernel and keeping the accelerated driver ("nvidia") At the moment I am using the old kernel and the accelerated driver because I didn't find a way to make it work with the new kernel. If you succeed solving this problem, please let me know, I'd appreciate ! [newbie] Firewall
Hello all ! What is the best way to make a firewall for a desktop station ? There aren't any servers running on my computer. Right after installing mdk8.1 I ran the control center and set the firewall answering the questions. Some time ago I decided to explore the BastilleInteractive options (I was curious) and left almost all the items set with the default options. I think it didn't make much difference for me and I have the same settings I had with the control center's firewall, but there is a doubt: how can I make sure that my firewall is running ? I don't see any process called Bastille or iptables with ps -ax, I only see a message during the boot process, "initializing Bastille Firewall [OK]". Another question, are all the standard firewall that come with mdk8.1 dependant on Bastille or I can disable Bastille at start-up ? Re: [newbie] writing/deleting files to a FAT32 partition
Richard, unfortunately I think that linux can't write/delete from a FAT32 partition. That was possible in the old FAT partitions, but became impossible with FAT32. Maybe you can find a program that makes it for you. For example, there is a program for windows that reads ext2 partitions and has experimental support for writting ext2 partitions. It is called explore2fs and you could try it in order to see if it can really write to an ext2 partition and then change your data partition to this format, this is an idea. Also you can look for a linux program that does the opposite, writting to a FAT32 partition. Well, I hope my suggestions can help you, good luck ! Re: [newbie] NVIDIA rpm
Which model of Nvidia card do you have ? I have a VantaLT and it is working fine in mdk8.1 after I installed the rpms I got from Nvidia's website. I also made some changes in XFconfig-4 to make it work properly, but there is something to be noticed, the accelerated driver only works under kernel 2.4.8-26, the one that comes with mdk8.1. When I upgraded my kernel to 2.4.8-34, the accelerated driver stopped working, then I couldn't start X anymore. I had to use nv again . Actually after some minutes i decided to use the old kernel again ... : ) Also I tried to compile the driver under the updated kernel but all I got was an error message, I didn't manage to make it be compiled ... : ( Well, that is all I know, hope I have helped you. Re: [newbie] DiskDrake And WinXP
I think that Linux doesn't support ntfs partitions, I am not sure. Anyway, if you want to resize your ntfs partition to make possible installing mandrake, you will need something like partition magic, but there is partition star as well, a shareware program, you can use it for 30 days. Re: [newbie] Mozilla's bookmarks and adress book
The place the files are in, depends on which version of windows you are using. For example, in my win2000 they are placed at Documents and Settings\Application Data\Mozilla...(here comes the profile directory), but it is in a different directory if you are using win95/98/ME. Tip, look up the Netscape/Mozilla release notes to find out in which directory the property files are installed depending on the OS' version. After that, you only have to copy the files addressbook, bookmarks, your mail, etc to the right directory in your linux partition. Currently this directory is .mozilla (a hidden one) located at your home directory. This procedure worked for me, I use mdk8.1 and Netscape 6.2.1. Hope I have helped you, good luck ! [newbie] Motorola Modem
Hi guys... I am trying to make my modem work under linux. I have a Motorola SM56 modem, it´s a PCI one.The specs say it is designed for windows, however I was told that if it shows as Communication controller on my /proc/pci I could make it work. So, it does really shows as comm controller, however I am not getting to make it work with the setserial commands. Looking at /var/log file, I can see two serial ports, ttyS0 and ttyS1. My modem is using COM4 under windows. Do I have to use de makedev to make this com available for my modem ? Other thing, at the /proc/pci looking in the comm. controller it does not show the I/O port used, I can see that with the setserial -a /dev/ttyS3 though. Is this correct ??? Because using the two setserial commands to set the modem, did not work for me, I kept getting the message, modem busy. If you guys have any ideias, please tell me. Thanks !!!

[newbie] Moving files from MsW to Linx
First of all, thanks to everybody who answered my last questiom wich subject was "Installation Problems". I decided that buying a new equipment would be easier than doing download on a 600mb file... Now, I have another question: Linux is able to read files from a FAT32 partition? If not, what can I do to share those files between two different HDs? []'s again! Re: [newbie] ZIP & Mandrake 6.1. help
Hi, I have had some problems configuring a zip drive in Mandrake 6.1 and I d like to ask you something. It used to work really well in Mandrake 6.0 (and in Mandrake 5.2) with the following fstab but now I have done a new installation (Mandrake 6.1) and it is not working anymore. It is an IDE Iomega zip drive 100 internal. Its is working fine in windows. I have my box partioned (hda1=windows). During the installation Mandrake no longer recognizes my zip drive as it did before during the installation of Mandrake 5.2. So, when I booted for the first time I added a new line in fstab: /dev/hdb /mnt/zipauto sync, user, noauto, nosuid, nodev, unhide 0 0 After this when I try to mount it, the light blinks and it tells me:"bad superblok; wrong fs type". I have kept the fstab just as it was (and as it is now): /dev/hda1/ ext2 defaults 1 1 /dev/hda2swapswap defaults 0 0 /dev/hda3swapswap defaults 0 0 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto sync, user, noauto, nosuid, nodev, unhide 0 0 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user, noauto, nosuid, exec, nodev,ro 0 0 /dev/hdb /mnt/zipauto sync, user, noauto, nosuid, nodev, unhide 0 0 none/procproc defaults 0 0 none/dev/pts devpts mode=06220 0 Would you know what is going on? Why this fstab that worked fine in previous versions is no longer working? I hope you will find something helpful. Here you gonna find a good script (./acentos). It does almost all the job and it is painless to work out. http://jefferson.computers.webjump.com/ And here you will find some documents that may help around changing files and doing all the job by hand. This is the site of the channel #linux_redhat (at the Brasnet server). The main page is http://users.linsnet.br/linuxall/ and the page where you can find the tutorial that teaches how to use the "dead keys" is http://users.linsnet.br/linuxall/tutorial/tutacentos.htm So, have fun. The last one is a brazilian site. So, it is written is portuguese. There is one more thing I d like to talk about. We have been writing in portuguese/english and this list is supposed to use english as its primary language. So, I think we should keep writing in english and if we want, write in portuguese just between us brazilians or portuguese speakers/writers outside the list. Anyway it was a good idea because called attention to one good point; there is an increasing number of brazilians using Mandrake (It is good to know I am not just one of a few using Mandrake in Brazil). I hope next releases will come with a keyboard map for brazilian keyboards. best regards, Rodrigo

[newbie] Linux Mandrake Extended Support - Brazilian Keymap
Hi, I am brazilian and I would like to tell you about a problem that I have noticed in the new distribution of Linux Mandrake 6.0. Here in Brazil we are used to use a us keyboard (microsoft 105 keyboard) though some of us use the ABNT keyboard (It is the IBM keyboard). But the problem is: we need to use ascents and they are not provided in the us keyboard. For example I would like to press the '^' and the 'e' and have the former over the 'e' on the screen. Does anyone have a brazilian keyboard map for microsoft keyboard with 105 keys? Maybe it could work if I knew how to enable the dead keys on my keyboard. If any of you could help me on doing it I would be greatful. There is a keyboard map for brazilian keyboards like mine but it just works if I am out of the X window system. It is named us-acentos.map. I am sending it to you as an attachment. I know that there are some files *.kimap. They are used under kde as keymaps but there is no one to Brazil. If you have any idea on how to solve this psoblem I would thank. Another thing, there is an aplication named XF86Setup. It is an X configurator and it comes with the Red Hat distribution and with the Mandrake distribution too but I couldn't find it. When I type XF86Setup, the following mesage appears:"bash: XF86Setup: comand not found.". So I decided to download and install it. Now I receive the following mesage: "bash: /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86Setup: cannot execute binnary file". My X system is working fine now but if I have a problem I will have to fix it in the old way, editing the XF86config. I wouldn't like to do it. Anyway, thank you for your atention.
