And when in using command line the Win key doesn't switch between
consoles anymore. :-( That was so cool.
(When in Ctrl-Alt-F4 the left Win key took you to Ctrl-Alt-F3 and the
right to Ctrl-Alt-F5.)

I remember this setting in 8.2 in KDE, too, however as I currently
don't want to install X I'd be glad if someone could tell me what to
do from command line.
I'll try Derek's suggestions (thanks) and make a search on my own.

I think it's like this because you're most probably using the K login
manager and if it's configured for autologin to KDE then it doesn't
care about any MDK autologin settings.
You first need to go into the K Control Center, disable the autologin
feature from there, save/quit, start MCC and configure the new
autologin settings.

Almost. That's the point of Acoustic management - to make it quiter at
the expense of some performance. AFAIK the drive seeks will be a bit
louder.

AFAIK the different reports are normal - the disk can be accessed in
many ways. If it is a 1GB+ disk you only should make sure that in BIOS
the access method is set to LBA, in no way NORMAL or LARGE. You can
make check that at the screen right after after the memory check - the
sort of table with CPU and disk info before it says "loading grub" or
"loading lilo". Before info about your capacity there should be LBA.

My friend's P3 800 had his 30GB disk set to LARGE and it screwed up
the whole partition table when I tried to install MDK 8.2 (said
something about sector 633GB conflicting with some 800GB sector... oh
well).

Rock Ridge shouldn't be the problem if it is used properly. I am not

the access rights, -r sets them to a+r. AFAIK.

First you might want to upgrade to the latest versions of cdrecord,
mkisofs, cdrecord-devel and cdrecord-cdda2wav and your GUI programs.
Next, try running them as root - kdesu -c your_GUI_program. The GUI
programs usually need to be set up from the root account, allowing
other users (you) to burn CDs, too. Smart programs set everything up
themselves, you just need to say what user(s) you want to have the
rights to burn CDs. Try and set it up, AFAIK X-CD Roast offers to
setup a non-root mode right at startup. Exit and try again as normal
user. If it doesn't work, try going into drakuser and add yourself to
all groups which have something to do with CD (cdburners, cdrw,
cdrom, etc.). Try again. :-)

Hi list,
Is it possible to add ISOs as loop devices to fstab for easy mounting?
Something like

/dev/hda1/iso/mdk82/Mandrake82-cd1-inst.i586.iso /mnt/image1 iso9660
loop,users

Didn't work for me, said the ISO is no directory.

Is it possible to copy Audio CDs on the fly, without the intermediate

What exactly does the command you use look like?
There are at least two problems:
1. "fifo had 64 puts" - are you trying to burn something really small?
Cos there should be much more puts when burning a CD.
2. Using the -dummy switch with cdrecord only performs a simulation of
the writing process, nothing is actually written. To write something
you must not use the -dummy switch.
I'd recommend a CD-RW for now to get you running without ruining any
CD-Rs.

What does happen? Do you get a buffer underrun?

Go to the directory where the iso is placed and try:

cdrecord -v -eject -dummy speed=16 dev=0,0,0 ./filename.iso
cdrecord -v -eject -dummy speed=8 dev=0,0,0 ./filename.iso
cdrecord -v -eject -dummy speed=4 dev=0,0,0 ./filename.iso
cdrecord -v -eject -dummy speed=2 dev=0,0,0 ./filename.iso
cdrecord -v -eject -dummy speed=1 dev=0,0,0 ./filename.iso

and see which one works for you. The -dummy switch makes sure no data
is actually burnt to the disc.

Cdrecord probably doesn't do anything special to prevent buffer
underruns. I guess it's just your drive working fine / as expected.

The guys at Mitsumi probably assume that you won't use their burner on
a 486 with a PIO 3 disk...

However I guess you're right, more wouldn't be worse. Apart from that

Well, as long as the FIFO doesn't go empty I don't think you need to
worry about anything. The CD-RW has a buffer of its own, so I assume
if FIFO runs out of data there still is at least 2 megs of
drive-internal buffer to be written and FIFO can get filled meanwhile.
Anyways, you can always increase the FIFO using a switch, don't

To clear that up, there are 74 min / 650 MB (~681,000,000 Bytes) and
80 min / 700 MB (~734,000,000 Bytes) disks. You don't fit much more on
them than their specified capacity, a few seconds / megs with
overburning, however that's not recommended. Tom was talking about
800MBs of WAVs to a 700MB CD. That's because you burnt WAVs as an
Audio CD. The Audio CD can store more Audio than Data because with
data about one third of all the space is allocated to error
correction, which isn't that important with Audio. You still burnt
only ~80 mins of Audio, but that doesn't mean you burnt 800 MB.
Megabytes refer to data capacity and minutes to Audio capacity so it's
not correct to say I burnt 800 MB of Audio.
Of course, there are disks which can hold up to 99 minutes of Audio,
but they aren't that common.

appropriate for you ;-)

if you need to take a lot of software with you, for instance to show
your friend. You can also burn it with some MP3s and use it in an MP3
capable CD-player, not worrying about that you waste spae with songs
you won't want to listen to later. My noname CD-RW is readable by all
the CD-ROM drives I tried it in and it works fine, as opposed to a
Verbatim CD-RW which just won't work with my CD-RW drive. (Can be
drive's fault, of course, but the drive works with everything else.)
And last but in no way least I think CD-RW is going to replace
traditional 3.5 diskettes.
Concerning the original post I think multisession is the best way but
you cannot add files to a non-multisession CD.

Hey Anne,

>> 4/ Did you try a different KDE account or Gnome?

A different user account. Log out of KDE and select a different user
and login as he/she. You could also try logging in as root if there is
no other user you can log as into, even though this is discouraged
(you should rather go offline before being root). You could also add a
new user and see if you have problems in this new account, too.
If no then something is wrong with your account, especially with some
of your personal settings.

Does this slow-dir-opening actually only happen in konqueror?
What's with Krusader or any other file manager for that matter?
What happens if you Ctrl-Alt-F1 and open a dir with MC?
And if you shut down X ie go to runlevel I think 3 (someone please
coorect me if I am wrong)? You could probably check what different
runlevels do by looking at man telinit.
Also runlevel 1 might be worth a try.

Good luck

When using Linux IRQ assigning is handled by the BIOS, so your only
chance would be to try and reserve IRQs there (e.g. for Legacy ISA
devices) which then frees up and the IRQs rearrange.
Another option might be to physically reseat the cards in the slots,
however I am not sure if it has any effect when BIOS is handling the
IRQs.

That would probably be best done with checkinstall
http://asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/checkinstall/
which is a tool that you run instead of make install. Of course, you
must run ./configure and make beforehand.

I had the same "host rejected: cannot find your hostname" problem. I
sent a mail to my ISP with a copy of a mail just like you posted and
they fixed it.
To point them into the right direction you need to ask them to fix
"host resolving".

Which part would you want to be verified? The Czech "assasination
method", that's true, however I wouldn't use the word "assasination".
Defenestration was an act in which angry citizens threw the "lords" or
"aldermen" (can't think of a better translation) out of the windows of
the town hall. As this act has proved effective it has been practised
a few more times.
The term itself is probably derived from the German word "Fenster"
(window).
Actually, the text you posted is an exact copy of what is found in the
Jargon File, http://tuxedo.org/jargon/html/entry/defenestration.html .

You should be able to do so using the emu-tools which you can download
from http://sourceforge.net/projects/emu10k1 . Either you configure
the .conf file (which comes with the rpm) or you use emu-config with

AFAIK you can uninstall Windows, remove it from all storage media and
give the installation back CD to the retailer for a full refund. It is
in Micros~1 Windows' EULA. There has been a bit of fuss about it
maybe a year ago IIRC when Linux users in Australia (again IIRC)
wanted to use Linux and didn't want Windows preinstalled and they
found this in the EULA so they went back to the store and got the
refund.

Now I hope I am not mixing another story with this but I think a
similar thing happened later in the US and the Linux users organised a
group trip to return Windows and Micros~1 welcomed them with a
"Microsoft greets the Linux community" banner.

Well, this everything is IIRC, so anyone please jump in and correct
me.

[newbie] Is there a DVD authoring application for Linux?

2002-02-24 Thread Mel Roman

Hi:

I would like to author my own DVDs so that I could
archive all of my digital images on DVD (complete with
menus, etc...) and play them for family and friends on
a DVD player. Apple iDVD application (packaged with
any new machine with a "SuperDrive") does this. Is
there a similar application available for the linux
platform? The only things I can find are some
projects on freshmeat which are only in the planning
stage. Ideally I'd like to burn the DVDs on an
external firewire DVD writer.

Assuming Hotmail is just another POP3 mail server,
most of the common E-mail clients will fetch your
E-mail from your Hotmail account. For example, I use
a @yahoo.com E-mail account for my mailing lists and I
retrieve them using Sylpheed. I used to use KMail for
the same thing and it worked fine also. You jsut need
to configure the account settings properly in your
EMail client (the POP3 server name, username,
password,etc...).

Let me know if you have any specific questions
concerning setup.

Good luck,

Well, as far as I understand there are three executable files
installed from this package - emu-config, emu-dspmgr and the script
one, IIRC. The script is calling emu-config to perform things. Now,

Hi,
I installed emu-tools 0.9.4 but whenever I am trying to run emu-config
it gives me:

SOUND_MIXER_PRIVATE3: Invalid argument

I checked the tools' docs for such a thing but it is not mentioned
there.
Can anyone please tell me what it means and how to fix it?

Hey,

I had a hard time trying to make it run until I tried the most basic
thing.
1. Create a dir called "zip" (or anything you like) in /mnt
2. As root type mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip
3. Modify /etc/fstab and add an entry for the zip drive if not already
automagically added. you can copy it there from /etc/mtab for example.

Good luck

You formatted the CD as UDF, either using DirectCD od PacketCD. As
this works nice in Windows, I am not sure how to make it work in
Linux. The two files there ensure that a proper driver for reading the
CD is installed when the disc is inserted into a non-CD-RW drive under
Windows. So you have two choices - either you check the docs (man) for
mount and see if there is some kind of UDF file system mentioned and
try to mount it with that, or you access the CD under Windows, copy
the files to disk, perform a "long" or "full" format of the CD and
then burn it the traditional way, using either WinOnCD, Easy CD
Creator, Nero Burning Rom or similar programs.

If you have more questions I'd be glad to help you.

I disagree... according to www.linuxprinting.org their suport is fine.
Let me quote,
"As for the DeskJets, HP recently released an open-source driver kit
for the bulk of its modern consumer DeskJet line. After finishing a
lengthy patent search, with version 1.0.1 they made it free software
by removing the "for usage with HP products only" from the BSDish
license. So HP is near the top of the heap in terms of free software
support for its inkjet devices (Free software driving Epson Photo
printers still produces better color quality)."
(taken from http://www.linuxprinting.org/vendors.html#hp )
I personally haven't tried their HPIJS driver yet, but I think HP is
on a good way. Epson might have better quality (under Linux), though.

Good luck anyways

[newbie] Re: Cron

2002-01-23 Thread Mel Roman

>how do i tell cron to run them? i have no idea >where
the cron configs are

You schedule command lines to be executed by the Cron
daemon by using the crontab utility. You should read
up on this utility in the man pages (type "man
crontab" in the terminal).

A much easier way, however is to use KCron (a
graphical front-end to crontab that is included in
your distribution). If you haven't installed it yet,
go back to your install CDs and install it. To start
it, just type "KCron". I believe there is
accompanying documentation in the help menu. It's
pretty easy to use.

Good luck,

Mel

Re:[newbie] Fetchmail Configure

2002-01-11 Thread Mel Roman

I've just recently started using fetchmail myself.
You'll want to first get procmail (the Mail Delivery
Agent that comes in your Mandrake distribution)
configured first, and then configure fetchmail to
fetch your mail and have them processed by procmail
(which will sort them and put them in the mail folder
of your choice, etc... with "recipes" that you can
write). About the best fetchmail documentation that
I've found is the on-line documentation (type "man
fetchmail"). It's not step-by-step, but if you read
through it, it's not too bad. You can find some good
introductions to procmail for newbies from the
www.procmail.org website. I found Nancy McGeough's
overview for newbies at the following site especially
helpful:http://www.ii.com/internet/robots/procmail/qs/

After reviewing the fetchmail and procmail
documentation you may still have a few questions, but
hopefully these will give you a start.

Good luck,

Mel

RE: [newbie] Shell Script

2002-01-06 Thread Mel Roman

Hi:

If I understand you correctly, you have a shell script
that you want to invoke from an icon on your desktop.
There no need to "create an executable" if the script
does what you want it to do once invoked. Just create
an icon on your desktop. In the properties of that
icon, there should be a field where you specify the
command line to be executed when the icon is pressed.
Fill in that field with the full path and filename of
the script.

I've tried not to be too verbose, but let me know if
any of this requires further clarification.

Have a nice day,

[newbie] RESOLVED: Why does fetchmail see my messages, but skip retrieving them?

2002-01-06 Thread Mel Roman

Hi:

I figured out the problem. I reviewed the man
fetchmail documentation again for the "No Keep" option
Lee Roberts referred to (Thanks, Lee) and then tried
including the -K switch in my fetchmail invocation.
This, however did not solve the problem.

While scanning some of the other options, however, I
noticed the -a switch (which says to retrieve all
messages even if they had been marked "seen").
Looking back at the log file, I noticed that the mail
server had indicated that the one message was "seen",
so it appeared that the message was being ignored for
that reason. I then invoked fetchmail with the -a
switch and everything was working fine again.

For some reason, the mail server was marking the
messages as seen, even though I don't think I had ever
had anything to do with those most recent messages
before. At any rate, I'm going to include the -a
option from now on.

Thanks again to Lee for taking the time to offer your
thoughts.

Have a nice day,

Mel

After installation of the Apache 1.3.20 with SSL

[Warning] Loaded DSO libexec/ uses plain Apache 1.3 API, this
module might crash under EAPI! (please recompile it with

but finally starts successfilly.

If somebody knows what is the difference
between EAPI and DEAPI and how to recompile all nesesary modules (or all of them

[newbie] Mac vs Intel architecture deliberations

2001-10-22 Thread Mel Roman

Hi everyone.

I´ve been playing with linux (ML8.1) for a little
while on my home machine (an old P166). Our family is
getting to the point where we need a second machine,
so I´m trying to decide on the merits of going with a
PowerPC (Mac) architecture (perhaps a new Mac G4)
instead of Intel. I forsee my current machine being
used primarily as a linux box (file/print server,
database server, secondary desktop for me). We would
use the newer machine as the primary (user-friendly)
desktop that all family members will be comfortable
using.

One of the things about the Mac that caught my
attention was that its new OS X is basically another
Unix variant. Aside from being more stable than
Windows, Im hoping that each machine would be able to
easily mount the others file systems. Has anyone tried
this? I would expect it to be simply a matter of
starting up an NFS service. I know that you can
similarly use SAMBA to serve files to a Windows
client, but I understand that this would be more
limiting (the linux box cant write to the Windows
partitions, etc...).

I know that several distributions (Mandrake, SuSe, and
Debian) come in PPC flavours, but I sometimes wonder
if they will continue to find it worthwhile to develop
for PPC. Although I expect that we would usually use
OS X on the Mac, I would eventually want to someday
put linux on that machine also. How does everyone
else feel about the future of linux support for the
Mac?

I would be interested in any thoughts/experiences
people have concerning Mac vs Intel architecture
(either relating to the above or in any other
respect).

Thanks in advance,

Mel

[newbie] Retrieving Yahoo mail with K-mail - Here's how

2001-09-01 Thread Mel Roman

There's been a lot of discussion about how to retrieve
web-based mail with the K-mail client. This is
actually pretty easy if your Web-based mail server
supports POP mail clients. I use KMail to retrieve
mail from my Yahoo account every day. In fact, I get
all my mailing lists that way. It's simply a matter
of setting up an account in KMail for the Yahoo mail
account and then setting the correct options on your
web-based Yahoo account). Here's how:

Configuring your Yahoo account:
==
Log on to your yahoo mail account and select Options.
The go to the "Pop Access and Forwarding" section and
select "Web and Pop Mail Access".

Setting up a K-mail account to retrieve from Yahoo
==
In KMail, go to Settings > Configuration. Under
"Incoming Mail" press "Add" to create a new account
for K-mail. Specify Pop3. In the "Add Account" form
just fill in your personal info (a nickname for the
new account, your Yahoo logon id, password, etc...)
and use the following:

Host = pop.mail.yahoo.com
Port = 110

You should then be able to download from your Yahoo
account.

Good luck,

Mel
