[newbie] Device is locked.....

2000-01-08 Thread Spiffy1two

Yesterday, I was having troubles when telnetting into my Linux box. I tried
using Minicom, and Minicom reported that I couldn't use it, and to ask my
system administrator for access or something. Surprisingly, I am the
sysadmin. So how do I enable other accounts to use it?

Later, I don't remember what account (mine or root) it was on, but Minicom
reported something like "device modem is locked". Sometime later I tried
again, and Minicom reported that the lockfile was out of date and let me in.
But what are lockfiles important for, and what should I do in case this would
happen in the future?

Re: [newbie] Instant Messenger

Do a search for GAIM. It stands for GNU Instant Messenger or something like
that. It was made by a third party, but i'm sure it works pretty well. It
comes as an RPM and was really easy to install.

Or perhaps automatic deletion of any email that has "unsuscribe" in the
subject, plus removal of the sender with an email telling them that they were
removed and why

Runlevel 5...is there level 4 graphical mode? What is with these runlevels,
I see them all over but don't quite understand. Just each runlevel is a
level of complexity, where each level depends on the processes going on in
the level beneath?

Don't bother answering this on the mailing list, but if you feel inspired
perhaps you could tell me what you think of BeOS...

Does Control P print in Linux before Linux finishes loading? DOS always
printed everything after Control P until you hit it again.

[newbie] Windows to Linux networking

1999-12-31 Thread Spiffy1two

Gettin all my questions out of the way :)

I have two PCs which are networked together. One runs Windows 98, the other
has both WIndows 95 and Linux. It's working fairly well at the moment, but I
would like to be able to transfer files back and forth between the Win 98 and
the Linux comp. How do I do this?

[newbie] MP3 software for Linux

1999-12-31 Thread Spiffy1two

Hello, its me again!

I need an MP3 player for Linux, be it XWindows or shell. X11Amp plays an mp3
for about 4 seconds, and then they're slow and jerky. Possibly there is a
way to make the buffer really super huge, but I haven't found one. In
Windows, I was able to play MP3s by using a program called SCMPX and
decreasing the quality to 22 khz. The mp3s played reasonably, although I
couldn't run much else without it "skipping". My computer is 66 mhz.

[newbie] BBSes and Linux

1999-12-31 Thread Spiffy1two

I am looking for some software and some good information about setting up a
Bulletin Board System under Linux. I'm using Mandrake, version 6 or somethin
like that.. :)
I had a fairly nice system running under DOS, but the crowds died down
eventually, and now it's down. If anybody could give me some software, a
link to some software, perhaps Mandrake includes something for it that I
don't know about, etc. The modem works and I have used it before with the
mini terminal program provided with my distribution.
