Good question, and I would be interested in the answer
as well... Correct me if I'm wrong here, but can PC
to Phone calls be made for free under GnomeMeeting?
There is a (cheap) rate for this to happen with Skype...

[newbie] Give spamassassin a chance?

2005-02-25 Thread Tango Echo
Have any of you successfully setup a spamassassin
proxy on Mandrake for a medium sized network? I'm
thinking of purchasing a barracuda device for spam
filtering, but thought of giving OSS a chance 1st.
But is it worth it, or will it require lots of time
reading docs and configuring? I seem to be finding
that OSS may only work in networks where the admin
isn't low on free time since RTFM seems to be the
mantra. Sure, the commercial packages are expensive,
but you get what you need right away. Would a SA
proxy be as simple as building a 10.1 box w/2 NICs,
installing webmin and SA, then doing a quick config
thru webmin?

TIA

If you are looking for a packaged solution, try
SystemRescueCD (http://www.sysresccd.org/) It
utilizes the PartImage that Anne mentioned for it's
"Ghost" component, plus has quite a few other
features. I've actually used this tool at my company
and found it worked great! There have only been a
couple systems that did not seem to get along with it...

[newbie] Mandrake 10.1 Web Server - allowing access

2005-02-15 Thread Tango Echo
Hi all,

After a bit of a break from the Linux world, I'd like
to start looking into real world implementations again
=). So here's the senario at the moment. I have an
old box I'd like use as an experemental intranet
server. I installed Mandrake 10.1 w/Apache, ssh, ftp,
and webmin. My goal is to have all three remote admin
methods available, and to allow certain users to
upload web updates via ftp.

Install went fine using the "Higher" security level.
However, I am unable to ssh into the box even though
the service is running. A quick look into the
hosts.deny and it's set for ALL. Changes to this file
only seem to be reverted back thanks to msec.

Is there an elegant way to enable ssh? Perhaps thru
webmin?

Thanks,

Tango

Well, all I really need is a good spam filter that is
fairly easy to setup (and of corse the directions to
do so). The spam is getting to the point where it's
unberable and my filter does more harm then good when
it filters personal emails...

I've always heard the SA was one of the best filters.
And I thought Tunderbird was more popular...
Surprising that nobody is using this config on the
list though!

[newbie] Screen is black

2004-09-08 Thread Tango Echo
For some reason, I get a black screen on shutdown or
console terminals (Ctrl+Alt+F1...) now that I've
installed Mandrake 10 OE. It's almost like it goes
into sleep mode becuase the monitor's powerlight goes
to amber. The motherboard is an ASUS A7N8X-X. The
video is nVidia GFX 5600 FX. Although my drivers have
been updated to the latest (and less impressive)
drivers, I had this problem long before the update.
Any ideas?

If I get the posting remembered I believe you were
talking about
swapping from -15mdk and -7mdk and back again?
Do you have both kernel-sources/vmlinuz in place and
your boot loader
configured to boot into either?
The way I understood things, when loading nVidia
drivers, you need to be
within the uname of the kernel you wanted to install
the driver to, so
that suggests to me that you need to boot into the
-15mdk and install
nVidia again as per its 'Requirements'. Yeah. I mean
having the driver
installed twice? It's my understanding, also, that
once you have booted
into a particular kernel type/version, that upon
exiting "X", you are
still using the initial booted too kernel?

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can correct this
if'n I'm wrong.

Also, don't forget to check the following in your
XF86Config-4:

(from the readme)

In the Module section, make sure you have:

Load "glx"

You should also remove the following lines:

Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"

...when I install the nvidia driver (as needed
everytime a kernel upgrade happens) I usually just
open a console and init 3. Then login as root,
install the driver and make the XF86Config-4
changes...

Any progress this far?

When I tried it, it failed while trying to compile the
nvidia kernel...

[newbie] SIGSEGV crashed w/signal 11 - Nvidia driver upgrade problem - HELP!!

2004-08-08 Thread Tango Echo
On my Mandrake 10 OE home install I recently tried to
upgrade my kernel and nvidia graphics driver. That's
what started this whole problem.

First I installed my newer driver, 2.6.3-15mdk, and
booted into with no problems. As usual, when I
upgrade the kernel I need to reinstall my vid driver.

I downloaded the 1.0-6111 version of the geforce
driver that was released Aug 5th. From the
2.6.3-15mdk KDE session I ran init 3 to install the
driver as usual. When I attempted to run the file I
got a strange error about a rivafb (something like
that?) module being loaded but it would be able to
continue. Since it didn't seem serious I continued.
The install failed while trying to build the kernel
for nvidia. The nvidia log didn't produce any
immediate clues, either. So I uninstalled and tried
it under my 2.6.3-13mdk kernel. That failed too...

Now, I have no graphics accelleration and I keep
getting this strange error in KDE:
SIGSEGV crashed with signal 11
...That is paraphrased, but it appears in the generic
KDE crash window with the picture of a bomb/gear.
First it appears when I boot into KDE then randomly
thoughout the day.

Any ideas here? The errors are annoying and obviously
not healthy. Plus I can't play any games...

Thanks in advance!

[newbie] VPN with Windows 2000?

I'm hoping to setup an MNF 8.2 box to support remote

Do we have a simplified or more current version of the

I know there is a way to cascade windows in KDE, but
is there a way to have them automatically resized on

different windows with five different sizes and losing
one during a cascade... BTW, I'm running MDK 10 so it
is whatever default KDE version...

RE: [newbie] Where are the exotic terminals and consoles - Eye candy?

2004-04-16 Thread Tango Echo
SuperKaramba... Now there's an idea. Problem is,
looks like you need to learn the Python language
before you can create any widgets. Secondly, I'm not
sure if Superkaramba supports text input. It seems
more like a disply device than something that would
take text input. Or am I wrong here?

The Eterm suggestions are nice, but I'm talking more
than changing backgrounds, using a colored font, or
using a transparant background. Stephen, you might be
right using it for changing color. If I learned bash
scripting, perhaps I could set a color change for each
character. Somthing like start at bright orange,
after one second change to a darker orange, then
repeat until it stops at red.

Shocks me that nothing like this is out there already.
Looks like if it doesn't exist I'll have to learn
some type of language - either Python for SuperKaramba
or advanced bash scripting...

Any other comments out there? Maybe I should hit up
the expert list out there...

Does anyone know of any linux terminals/consoles that
do a little bit more than just display the characters
you type?
Some that would provide animations and eye candy
perhaps? For example, when you typed to the terminal
the most recent character would very start bright and
slowly fade to a darker color as time passes. I think
something like that would look a bid more interesting,
anyone agree? The concept could be taken much
further...

I tried breifly looking on freshmeat, but perhaps I

[newbie] Citrix bug in Community 10.0?

2004-03-09 Thread Tango Echo
Hi all,

This may be better addressed to the cooker list, but
since I'm such a newb to cooker and it appears that
cooker only applies to mdk packages, I'll start here.

I'm running the latest version of cooker which I
presume is community 10.0. The problem I am
experiencing is with the latest Linux Citrix client
available from citrix.com. When I read my mail in
Outlook Repress, I get strange gray bars over some of
the email subjects (I'm using a split screen display).
It's like the normal blue bar when you select an
email, except it turns gray and distorts the text. It
looks horrible and impacts my productivity since I
have to start clicking everywhere to see all subjects
at times... Anyone experience this, have a fix, or a
suggestion for the most likely place I will receive
help? Thanks,

Tango Echo

Well, I"m not sure if I actually have the latest
"file", but when I run the install I use the --update
option and it appears to download a newer version from
the nVidia ftp server. The error that kills the
install process was something to the effect that it
was not able to find the nvidia module -- sorry,
forgot to write it down last night. Any more clues?

Hi all,

I'm thinking testing opengroupware in my org but seem
to have lost the link to the how to! It was on the
website and called the:

Sounds great, and I skimmed it before. Yet when I go

anyone know where it went or how I can locate one? I
prefer howtows that are geared not only to the distro
in use, but also the version as well... Thanks in

W? What did I do wrong? I tried installing the

[newbie] Need groupware recommendation

2004-02-06 Thread Tango Echo
Hi all,

The time is getting closer when I will be able to
start testing different groupware packages to possibly
deploy in a business environement. However, I will
need some recommendations from all of you. To this
point, I'm only aware of three major groupware
packages:

1) phpgroupware
2) kroupware
3) opengroupware

The package should be easy for a newbie to install (if
possible), provide email services and shared
calendering. Shared contacts, grouping, and exchange
compatibility (even for a fee) would also be a bonus.

What do all of you recommend and why?

Thanks in advance!!

Are you pulling my leg or did you just misunderstand?
I never know with you, Joe =)

Then again, maybe it was myself that was
misunderstanding the conversation...

What I ment was, would there be a way to put the Easy
Urpmi interface or concept *into* cooker. Like it
could be an option on Mandrake update, if Mdk-update
doesnt' already modify the urpmi db... Perhaps if one
mirror isn't working correctly (spews *any* errors) it
could give you the option to proceed or choose another
mirror. It could even utilize the speed checker
script to find the fastest mirror!

Keep in mind, that I'm 100% new to cooker. I've
installed it twice and that is the limit to my
experience. I hope to become more active with the
project as it seems very exciting! I'm not a
programmer but I can at least test apps for bugs and
try it on different hardware I guess...

I know, this conversation must be more appropriate for
the cooker list, but it's important to bring up the
topic once and a while. Hey we could aways use a few
more recruits, right? =)

Figures. I just needed to be patient.

So, what about the possible cooker integration? I
think something like that would be great! ...I'm not
sure to what extent the integration was considered -
be it just adding the internet favorite or actually
building an app for it - but that would certainly make
Easy Urpmi much more easier... And easy should be the
goal of Mandrake =)

Thanks for the detailed reply Derek =) !
Now, am I understanding you correctly that worrying
about app file over writes is not an issue? That was
primarily what I was worried about. For example, if
app files such as those that make up mozilla 1.3 are
in the Tango directory and I install 9.2, will 1.3 be
the browser if I copy the Tango dir back? Or are all
working app files stored outside of ~ ? I realize you
said sys config files are in /etc but I want to make
sure you didn't mean app files - those that make up
the actual program (probably should've used 'app file'
vs. 'sys file').

I've heard of the seperate /home partition, but looks
like this will be something I need to do! Can you
give me a modern expectation for size allocation of /?
I've heard 1.5 - 2 times for swap, and /home takes
what's left after /, but I've never really known what
to allocate for just /... I've got around 50 GB to
spare for the partitioning.

[newbie] Upgrading, backing up, and restoring data - moving from 9.1 to 9.2

2004-01-07 Thread Tango Echo
Hi all,

I've recently decided to take the plunge and use 9.2
as my base OS. I'm performing a clean install on a
brand new hard drive. My old mdk 9.1 install still
resides on two old hard disks. My question is this:

Is there a simple way to restore my data from 9.1?
The main apps that need to be restored are GAIM,
Evolution, and Kmail. While I do need the info back
from them, I DO NOT want to over write system files
since 9.2 has newer packages installed. I've heard
some people just copy the old folder back (so I'd copy
my old Tango directory to over write my current Tango
directory). That would over write the sys files IMO.
I know Mandrake has a backup/restore utility too, but
I'm not sure if that applies here.

Lastly, if no solution is available, why not? It
would seem simple enough to me. Just make a program
or bash script that copies all the data files (not
system files) to another hard drive or cd, then run it
again to restore them. I'm sure many of you must go
thru this at the rate we upgrade. This is the biggest
pain of the upgrade procedure IMO. Tweaking my eye
candy in the new version, etc is no big deal, it's
trying to remember what files go where
w/backup/restore, etc.

Any ideas here?

[newbie] 9.2 good now?

2004-01-05 Thread Tango Echo
Hi all,

What have your experiences been with Mandrake 9.2? I
recently purchased a new hard drive and was debating
if I should put 9.1 (my current one) or 9.2. I know
lots of people had complained about 9.2 initially, but
perhaps most of the bugs have been worked out? Are
there any common bugs I should know about? I just
returned from a break so I'd be interested what all of
you think

Thanks for the advice Lanman and Derek =)

I'm not 100% sure it is the mobo as I still have to
check the outlet, cable, and switch. But I need to be
ready if it is!

I've always heard good things about Asus. Time to
shell out the $70+ and pick one up... I agree that I
would like a flexible BIOS for a couple reasons: a) in
case I get in a tweaky mood b) special options like
internal temperature are extremely valuable. My
old/current chip set is SiS. MDK 9.0 ran on it
horribly, but 9.1 ran like a dream. As for the
current CPU it's an AMD Athlon XP 1600. I'd like to
stick with AMD if possible... Silly question, but
Pentium or Intel chip sets still support AMD
processors right?? Sure hope so... Thanks for
pointing out the closed source issue w/Nvidia, Derek.
Yes, I have and love my GeForce FX 5600 video card,
but that is a must have!

Well, I think my motherboard decided to just randomly
die the other night. Worked fine the night before,
but in the morning didn't respond to the power switch.
I checked the power cables and swapped the power
supply for a known good one - still nothing. So that
would be mobo then, I guess...

What do you guys recommend for a motherboards that
would work great with Mandrake? I was running 9.1 but
am considering 9.2 (if you guys can recommend it now).
The ideal mobo would have an 8x AGP slot w/on board
temperature detection. On board video, sound and net
are not neccessary as I have these already. Hopefully
they still work! Cost is an issue too, unfortunately,
as the budge is somewhat limited. Heh, they probably
dont' make mobos w/lifetime warranties do they? Well

Lee, while were on the subject, have you tried
phpgroupware? I am considering an office Linux mail
server that will provide groupware (contacts,
calender, etc). So it seems the major options right

If you or anyone else can make a recommendation I'd

I'm sorry if this was already covered in the thread,
but I was not completely following along. Where are
you getting your mulit-page PDFs? I would love to
find out how/if this is possible. Currently I have a
document I'm scanning in via Kooka but am only able to
send each individual page to a PDF file. Hence, a 5
page docuement produces 5 individual files instead of
a single PDF file =/

Any suggestions or should I look on expert? I would
think this would be a very common task that I am
trying to accomplish here...

Thanks,

graphs of weight, food, etc...

Heh, oh yeah, there it is... Thanks =)
But now I face a new problem. The quality of the PDF
file printed is not very good at all. Some of the
smaller type is not even readable. Are there settings
to change this as well?

Ah ha! Found it... Here's the url:

http://linuxshop.ru/linuxbegin/win-lin-soft-en/#1

It appears to be an excellent resource. Perhaps if
this goes on up on Twiki, we could put an astrisk next
to each piece of software that is Mandrake supported.
For example if Gnucash is available from the mandrake
contrib (or perhaps other mirrors) we could put a *
next to it. Then people know they only need to urpmi
the app name to grab it. If we really wanted to get
fancy we could have the * hyperlinked to a page that
listed the Mandrake versions that support the app. So
we could setup 3 pages for example:
1 - 9.2
2 - 9.2, 9.1
3 - 9.2 9.1 8.2
Then depending upon the support of the app, we
hyperlink the * to 1, 2, or 3. Just some thoughts

I tried xsane with not much more luck then Kooka.
Basically it identified some characters that Kooka
didn't, but didn't recgonize some that Kooka did.
Perhaps I should start a new thread to see what others
are doing for OCR. There's gotta be something better!
Although Kooka and Xsane were really the only free
OCR apps on that list...

[newbie] Mandrake 9.2 won't install

2003-12-04 Thread Tango Echo
Hi all,

I just downloaded Mandrake 9.2 and tried to install.
I am brought to the inital splash screen where I hit
Enter to continue. Next I see the text fly by but am
stopped by this error:

error in exec of stage2 :-(
trying to execute '/usr/bin/runinstall2' from the
installation volume,
the following fatal error occurred
FATAL ERROR IN STAGE1: I/0 error
I can't recover from this.
You may reboot your system.

I tried reburning the CD from the ISO and tried
installing on a different computer (both are Compaqs).
I'm going to guess the ISO is bad and I need to
download it again. But I'd like to make sure here.
Any suggestions? I for the ISO from the secsup mirror
if that matters...

Yes, I can always su, updatedb, then slocate - and it
does work good! However, I am shocked to see only one
gui based file search program installed in MDK 9.1,
not to mention it doesn't even work... Any more ideas?

[newbie] Mozilla - that resource hog!

2003-12-03 Thread Tango Echo
Hi all,

I'm running MDK 9.1 on my workstation. I usually
leave it on 24/7 for the week but shut it down on the
weekends. Usually between Wednesday and Friday
Mozilla becomes *painfully* slow. I'm talking about
writing a sentance and watching it appear over the
course of 10-30 seconds... Scrolling and simply
browsing is also slowed dramatically. I'm running
gkrellm and it indicates that my CPU is pinned at 100%
during this slow period. I thought that maybe if I
upgraded Mozillia that may help. So I took out the
old and installed Mozilla 1.5 XFT. Still no luck.
This is going to sound silly, but the only way I've
found to fix the problem is to shutdown all instances
of Mozilla and start the program back up. Seems
simple enough, but when I'm doing a lot of research
leaving the windows open is much more convenient then
book marking or history browsing... Even after I shut
it down it still can spike the CPU to 80-100% - is
that part normal?

Any ideas here?

Thanks in advance,

Tango Echo

Eric, I don't know how you are handling the bounces
but maybe waiting a peroid of time (1-2 weeks) before
unsubbing the addy might be a good idea. I email from
a Yahoo acocunt that has the potential to reach it's
quota max in one day from the shear about of
spam/viruses I receive. I would think email starts
bouncing after the quota is hit. My only options
presented by yahoo are to delete as often as they come
in (not always possible) or create a new account. So
would there be any way to hold out on unsubbing?

Could I perhaps be ommiting a simple detail to runing

keep pluggin away at this. Once we get it working,

I probably should've tested it before my orginal post
to this thread. Oh well. I've run into a problem.
This is what I get when I run the script:

tmp]$ sh cheker README.mirrors
Testing tr: invalid option -- n
Try `tr --help' for more information.
cheker: line 69: syntax error near unexpected token
`newline'
cheker: line 69: `then grep "rtt"
$tmpdir/ping$$_$h | cut -d"/" -f 5 | tr "\n" " " > '

You're probably already aware lanman, but I'll say it
for everyone to hear... I currently have one MNF box
on one of our sites that performs firewalling, IDS,
and WebProxy. I'd be lying if I said it's been
flawless, but I must also admit the problems have come
from my lack of admin knowledge. Still, the problems
have been quite minimal and I believe it's at a point
where you "plug it in and forget about it..."

The Twiki suggestion is great. One addition to it may
be more of an "industry HOWTO". For example, people
could post HOWTOs that pertain to their industry.
Weather its government, insurance, production, retail,
or something else, each industry has its own specific
needs from the software it uses. Even if it's just a
list of apps they use, it would give people a good
idea where to start and what tool(s) is recommended
for the job. Add some contact info for each
bizcase/howto and you have a rather powerful tool for
Windows to Linux migrations =). (I'm actually still
in search of the Win to Lin migration myself)

[newbie] Register programs in MDK 9.1 - Mozilla?

2003-11-12 Thread Tango Echo
Hi all,

I recently urpme'd my orginal mozilla installation on
my 9.1 box and installed Mozilla 1.5 using the
mozilla installer from the Mozillia site. Now it seems
Mozilla isn't my default browser. For example, when I
click on a link in GAIM or Evolution, nothing happens.
Does the new installation need to be 'registered'
with MDK 9.1 so it knows the new 1.5 install is my
default browser? How do i fix this? Thank in advance,

Tango

Ricky,

I had (have) a very similar problem with my GeForce FX
5600... I started getting that same error you do about
permissions being to restrictive. I also attempted
removing the references (but forgot one) and
found my self booting to what you have now. Now if
only I can remember how I fixed it...

I do know I made a backup of the console.perms but I
believe to overwrite the exsisting one, I had to go in
single mode. If are using LILO, try booting into
single mode THEN try modifying the console.perms file.
I believe you hit ESC at the graphic LILO screen and
type 'linux single' to accomplish this (others can
comment if this isn't right).

While I was able to bring it back just fine, I tried
it again but made sure to remove all
references... I wasn't impressed with the results so I
put it back. To this day if I get that error I must
enter a root console and chmod 0666 /dev/nvidia* to
get to work. Please, if any knows of better solution,
let us know!!

Thanks,

Tango

This is my first post ever to Twiki so if you don't

I didn't see that - where is it? And how does this

As I understand it, the laws are writen losely so that
"communication service provider" is left open for
interpretation. The ISP is also a communication
service provider. Wouldn't you agree?

The underlying problem isn't "theft of data" but
rather running an "a unlawful communication device"
(program) tht "distrupts communication and conseals
origin of data".

I agree with you that it may simply be paranoid
interpretation... But then again, who's providing
goods/serveices/etc and isn't at least slightly
paranoid of lawyers? It's almost like you need to
adapt the security mentality - "don't assume the
probable but rather the possible". Contrary to what
it sounds, this isn't a rant on the US legal system.
Instead, I'm just tying to get the facts straight
here. I've considered implmenting such software in my
organization. Fortunately, the orgainization has a
lawyer that may be resourceful in this situation.

Yes, I do actually. Bryan, your problem is you are too
rational =). In this upside down world we live in, and
an even more more upside down US legal system (plz, no
OT flames) anything is possible. I've heard of cases
where a theif fell thru a skylight window, injuried
himself, sued the intended victim and won. While I
suspect that is probably an urban legend I totally
believe it is possible...

Ah! Here is the reference: http://www.hackbusters.net
While it's possible it may deal directly with his
LaBrea tar pit program, it appears to hinge around the
tar pit technology. Here's a quote from the site:
Quote:

This section of the Illinois Criminal Code was added
on January 1, 2003 by Public Act 92-728 and defines an
"unlawful communication device" as "any communication
device which is capable of... facilitating the
disruption... of a communication service without the
express consent or express authorization of the
communication service provider..."

It furthermore makes it a criminal offense if a person
knowingly "possesses, uses, manufactures, assembles,
distributes, leases, transfers, or sells" an "unlawful
communication device... for the commission of a theft
of a communication service or to receive, disrupt,
transmit, decrypt, or acquire... any communication
service without the express consent or express
authorization of the communication service provider,
or to conceal or to assist another to conceal from any
communication service provider or from any lawful
authority the existence or place of origin or
destination of any communication".

LaBrea both disrupts communication and conceals the
true origin of communication in an attempt to protect
a network from attack. If you are currently running
LaBrea, I would suggest that you look into the
legality of having an operating network tarpit in your
state.

...Not to encouraging, eh ? =/ This program sounds
nice too...

What about the legal consequences of using a tar pit?
Seems I remember reading something about that several
months back... Or perhaps they were just questioning
it becuause the TP acted as some kind of DoS attack
(even tho they are connecting to you)? Maybe that's
been straightened out - does any one know?

[newbie] Need Trouble Ticket program recommendation

Hi all,

I searched freshmeat for trouble ticket programs and
found quite a handful. I would like your
recommendations... Are any of you using a linux/web
based support ticket program? Do you know of any good
ones in 9.1? Something for an IS department to track
problems and search/retrieve later for solutions would
be intent here.

Hi Lanman! Hoped you'd pop in on this topic... Yes, I
looked into LTSP a little over a year ago... Seemed
nice, but you still have that terminal server
investment: the server hardware. In an ideal world
that would be great to setup, but I'm *hoping* to just
make due with what I have for hardware resources.
Unless there is more to this technology then I realize?

I've always thought IceWM to be one of the lightest
WMs. There probably isn't a way to weigh these
things, but you find XFCE4 to be faster??

It's at around $15 on pricewatch... =) Gotta love
inexpensive RAM! I've thought about purchasing a
faster processor (400-500Mhz?) since they are quite
cheap too. However, then the mobo and disks could
probably use an upgrade as well. The ideal situation
would be to get these things functional w/out any
additional purchases or hardware changes.

This is where you got me... It almost sounds that
you're saying 9.2 is not any more (if not less)
recsource intensive then 8.2. It may seem to be a
windows mentality, but I would think common sense
would dictate that more advanced software requires
more advanced hardware. What's the case here?

I've got a couple 200 Mhz 128 MB Dells that I'd like
to throw Mandrake on for the local Library. I put 9.1
on it, but I think that's to much for it - even
running IceWM.

Are there any HOWTOs similar to what I'm trying to
accomplish here? Users will need to be locked down as
not to tamper with configuration or install any
software. However, tasks such as web browsing,
chatting (multi user?), viewing multimedia, and using
office applications will be standard usage.

If not, what do you suggst I do for these systems? I
still have the MDK 8.2 disks, but Mandrake dropped
support for this version - this could lead to a
comprimised system.

Thanks in advance,

Tango

What do you and others suggest for Wings 3D tutorials?
Just the ones that are on the Wings homepage?

Back on the subject of Wings 3D, I found a site that
provides a urpmi source of wings 3D rpms! Here it is:

http://rpm.nyvalls.se/graphics9.0.html

Just add his source, and urpmi wings =)
I must say, however, that I am skeptical of adding a
urpmi source that is not necessarily trusted. Couldn't
he add malicious code to the packages? Or is this
site known enough to have a decent reputation? Am I
just being paranoid here? What do you guys think?

Ok, so I admit it, I know nothing about 3D modeling.
However, it is an interest of mine that I've always
wanted to explore.

My doubts in Blender weren't that it was free, but
rather the quality of the screen shots I was seeing -
they appeared to be rather low quality. I was very
impressed by the screenshots on Wings 3D. However if
I"m understanding this correctly, Wings is just the
modeler and Blender is the actual component that
renders the picture. Thus the actual quality of
picture would come from the render component. I saw a
few poeple on that forum say they were using Lightwave
for renders.

Tell me I'm missing something, that Blender can render
images at least close to what Lightwave can do? Also,
how does one integrate Wings into Blender and why
isn't Wings in the Mandrake packages?

TIA,

Tango

[newbie] Lightwave 3D

Hi all,

Was browsing digitalblasphemy earlier... I've seen
references before but never actually entered the site.
The artist claims he uses Lightwave 3D and World
Builder for some projects. Ok, that's $3,000 I don't
have right now. Does any know of a similar product
for Linux? A high quality 3d modeling program? I've
heard of blender, but haven't really checked it out...

Well, almost...

Keeping the emails neat by clipping sigs and headers
definitely makes sence. It's extra work, but I can
see that its just curtious. As far as "reading up" I
can almost see that point as well - but I see both
sides. When I'm following a thread I usually have all
the emails sorted by thread with auto preview on.
Since I'm going down the list of emails in the thread,
I already know what the discussion is about. But to
have to scroll down 5 pages to see the one liner
comment seems unnecessary when I could have just seen
it in 0.5 second with a top post and auto preview. If
I'm lost on the comment, I just scroll down to double
check... I'm assuming you don't "read up" like that
because you (re)read all the comments right down to
the one liner??? Also, do people that don't include
any previous message in their reply (snip all) get
grief too? Ed, I hope you were just joking about
posting in the middle - seems a lot of people would
miss what you say if you weren't!

Thanks,

Tango

RE: [newbie] 4 speakers & linux

2003-09-08 Thread Tango Echo
Anarky,

I had a hard time with rear sound on my SB Live 5.1
card. It isn't fun. But fortunately I found a fix.
Here's what I did to fix it:

Start alsaguimixer
Mute the "SB Live Analog/Digital Output Jack" item
Control the volume of the rear speakers by the "Wave
Surround" Item.

I played with it a little - lowered the front and
raised the rears. Finally it worked great! Is this
new info or of any help?

[newbie] NNTP Clients?

2003-08-26 Thread Tango Echo
Hi all,

Could any of you recommend a good NNTP client for MDK?
I just realized Mozilla has one, but would like to
know what my options are. I use Evolution and Kmail,
but neither seem to have that type of support.

Thanks!

Another high quality game available on Linux??

Ron, how did it run on your Linux boxes after you

I should try to install it on my MDK 9.1 system.
Interested in the results if/when I get around to it?

[newbie] Playing/Running content from Mozilla

2003-07-21 Thread Tango Echo
Hi all,

I recently discovered how to install a few extra
plugins for Mozilla including Real Player and Java.
This is great - still trying to make the full move
from Windows. I also have discovered MPlayer (in place
of Ogle...). My question is: How can one play WMV
files and other content right from Mozilla? I
installed mplayerplug but that didnt' seem to work.
Since Mozplugger appears more powerful (you can link
office files, etc) I figured I'd try that... Office
files such as .doc open fine. But still cannot
automatically open wmv.

If I download the wmv files and open them in MPlayer,
they play fine. The problem appears to be in the
linking of mozilla and mplayer? Any tips or advice
you guys can offer will be greatly appeciated. Thanks!

[newbie] Video capture

2003-07-18 Thread Tango Echo
Hi guys!

Can any of you recommend an inexpensive Linux
compatible video capture card? I am told the primary
need for this card will be for converting VHS tapes to
file. I saw the ATI TV wonder VE on pricewatch for
about $47. However, this card looks quite basic (does
it only transfer video - no sound?).

Secondly, what would be a good app to capture the
video once the appropriate hardware has been
purchased?

Thanks!

Re: [newbie] nVidia driver fails to initialize at startup

2003-07-16 Thread Tango Echo
Joe, this vid card rocks. I ended up going with the
256MB/Gainward option. Although I haven't tried too
many games or settings, I've been quite impressed so
far. One this I did do (on the XP side) was crank the
anti-aliasing to 8x in an attempt to kill those
"jaggies". Decent improvement with 0% loss in
performance that I could tell... (True, some of the
jaggies are purely due to the game's orignal code) As
I was saying before, Enemy Territory on Linux is all
I've been playing. I've tried it in both Windows XP
and the Linux port. All I can say is the Windows vs.
Linux crash scrorecard reads Win=1 Lin=0 =) *sigh*
Nothing like spending 30+ minutes gaining experience
points then losing it all because WinXP decides its
having a bad day.

pricewatch.com has the card listed for $150... this is
actually how I purchased mine...

Re: [newbie] nVidia driver fails to initialize at startup

2003-07-16 Thread Tango Echo
Deek,

I just installed a GForce FX 5600 recently dispite my
elevated newbie quotient =)

First you did remember to leave X Windows when you
installed the nVidia driver, right? To get back your X
environment you may want to try entering console mode
(which doesn't seem to be a problem at this point),
and running the command drakxconf. Choose the Geforce
FX driver under display settings, and quit. For some
reason 'Test Display' didn't work for me, so I'm not
sure if I recommend that option.

Lastly, you can always

vi /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

to manually change it back...
(If you're not familiar with vi, pressing 'i' will
allow you to edit. ESC then :wq will write changes and
quite (:q! will exit with out saving).

Hope that is of some help - let us know how it goes!

Ronald,

Nevermind! I spoke too soon! I had downloaded the ET
file and was planning on installing it the following
night. I was also thinking that the installation was
complex (little did I know it was as complex as
typing sh ... LOL). Anyway, installed it
and played for about an hour last night. Runs like a
dream! Linux is now one step closer to being a
desktop distro - every game released with native Linux
install packages will continue that direction...

By the way, IIRC you mentioned you had some problems
getting it to work on your son's computer. Did you
ever get the ET network up??

RE: [newbie] New Video Card Setup - HELP!!

2003-07-09 Thread Tango Echo
Thanks guys I think I got it working! Being the
impatient individual i can be, I just took the 1st of
advice from Robin:

1. Boot to console (had to since X didn't work)
2. Ran drakxconf => Selected Display Conf
3. Chose nVidia Geforce FX driver
4. DID NOT run test (for some reason that didn't work)
5. Saved changes and started X

Then I was up! The nicest thing was the newest nVidia
driver install. Just downloaded the driver, quit X,
sh'ed the driver, changed the nv line to nvidia in my
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and that was it!!

Thanks again to all for the help and to Stephen for
the vid card recommendation. Now if I can get Enemy
Territory to work on Linux: one more nail the XP
coffin =)

By the way, what's the difference between drakxconf
and XFdrake? Same tool with different names or is
XFdrake more powerful for vid config?

[newbie] New Video Card Setup - HELP!!

2003-07-08 Thread Tango Echo
Hi all,

After following Stephen's advice, I purchased the
GeForce FX 5600 256MB video card. Not really acting
to intelligently, I simply powered down the computer,
swapped the cards, and started the dual boot system.
XP found the card fine, but MDK 9.1 kicks into the
console.

1. How can I configure the video card from the console
so I can get back into KDE?

2. I know the FX 5600 has its own updated drivers
from the nVidia web site that I would like to be
installed. How does this play into it? Do I have to
do the basic setup from the console to get KDE up and
running, then install the updated drivers?

TIA!

Also, I could be wrong here, but the polling method
MAY be faulty. I'm suspicious of Gentooers - maybe
this is what they do: Go to the site, place the vote,
clear the cookies, refresh the page, place the vote,
rinse and repeat...? If you sit there and refresh the
page you'll notice at least 3 votes every 5 seconds -
steady stream or something else?

Now if we see the Mandrake popularity go thru the roof
we'll know whats going on ;)

Do any of you know of a MDK 8.2 program that can track

go on a MNF box. I was told that MNF could do perform
these tasks, but I believe the question was
misunderstood. For example, I need the ability to
view all web sites visited per user name.
