[newbie] Problem entering Sawmill config tool
Hi, today I decided to sit down and play with linux (my machine is a Celeron 566, 64 MB, ram, running LM7.2.). I thought I'd like to play with sawmill-sawfish, as I've been meaning to learn about lisp for a bit. Now I've installed it and I was happy how fast, responsive and fairly easy to use it was even in it's minimal default settings. My problem is I would like to play with the configuration tool provided in the menu, but whenever I try to access any of the items in the config list, nothing happens. *click* > void at the moment. I've searched around the web a little and have found a couple of posts on msg boards but none with replies that answered the persons question. Has anyone had this problem? Any light on how to fix it? Also as a tack on, if someone knows a good tutorial for sawfish/sawmill, or lisp programming, if you have the time to send a link it would be nice :-) Thanks, Trevor Stewart (Zaphod42) AF 1982 Canada M BSC/BCS in training alt.atheism atheist/agnostic list, #1623! [newbie] Reoccuring 3:02 error
Hello, I'm relativily new to using linux (I've only been using it for a month or so), and I keep getting a reoccuring Kernal Panic "VFS: unable to mount root partition 03:02 This has happened twice before and both times I haven't been able to find enough info on how to fix it. I don't know why it keeps on happening, but I booted up linux yesturday (or tried to) and got the error again. I had just re-installed it a week before due to the same problem, so I wasn't a terribly happy boy. I've tried to boot with my rescue disk all 3 times but without luck. I keep getting the message: Unable to open initial console kernel panic: No init found. try passing init= option to kernel Can anyone explain why this may keep occuring? What it may mean (From what I've read it seems to mean the system cannot find hda2 at a low level). And possible some help on fixing it. My machine is a Celeron 533 (socket 370) 64MB RAM (Core, I read about it again {As I had heard the term before but in realation to old mainframes}) 15GB HD, 6GB win98 partition (hda1) / (hda2) /boot (hda5) /usr (hda6) /home (hda7) /swap (hda8) /var (hda9) ATI Rage IIc 8MB Creative PCI Ensoniq Motorola 56kbs winmodem 52x IDE CD-ROM thanks, Trevor Stewart
[newbie] VFS: unable to mount root fs on 03:02
Hi, I'm running mandrake 7.1 and I have a problem this momment. I'd like to start off and say I'm relativily new to linux so the answer to my problem could be simple and it just happens I don't know it. I went to boot up linux today (I was in windows the night before. I like my games), and I got this kernel panic error. Kernal Panic "VFS: unable to mount root partition 03:02" I attempted to start my nmachine with the rescue disk but I get a new error. Unable to open initial console kernel panic: No init found. try passing init= option to kernel I'm not quite sure what these mean, I hope my fs isn't corrupted. I've also tried booting the system up with slack boot/root disk combo, and it didn't work either. I have had a corrupted partion once before and cfdisk refused to open or acknowledge my linux partions. This time it opened and displayed my partions with no fuss, so I'm hoping linux can be saved. My machine is a Celeron 533 (socket 370) 64MB RAM (Core, I read about it again {As I had heard the term before but in realation to old mainframes}) 15GB HD, 6GB win98 partition (hda1) / (hda2) /boot (hda5) /usr (hda6) /home (hda7) /swap (hda8) /var (hda9) ATI Rage IIc 8MB Creative PCI Ensoniq Motorola 56kbs winmodem 52x IDE CD-ROM thanks
[newbie]
Hi, I'm a relitivily new linux user and I got up this morning to boot into win98 (I know 'who would want to use windows' but I really wanted to play Janes WWII fighters:-) ). Then after I finished what I wanted to do I rebooted the computer and started to load linux. Upon linux loading I get the error msg. "VFS:Cannot open root device 03:06 Kernel panic. 'pretty much same as above really' " then it just sits there. I've tried using my rescue disk. I placed it into the floppy drive then at lilo types rescue and I get the same error. What is causing this (or should I say could cause this). I have done several web searches and so far everything I have found on the error msg have been relating to the upgrade of the kernel (which I haven't done yet). My machine is a Celeron 533 (socket 370) 64MB RAM (Core, I read about it again {As I had heard the term before but in realation to old mainframes}) 15GB HD, 6GB win98 partition, 7 GB Linux (Mandrake 7.1) partition, 300MB /Home partition, 100MB swap ATI Rage IIc 8MB Creative PCI Ensoniq Motorola 56kbs winmodem 52x IDE CD-ROM
[newbie] Old 2x CD-rom troubles
Hi, I have Mandrake six, and I want to install it on a old computer of mine made from spare parts in my house. Now my problem is that when I enter the setup Drake cannot find my cd-rom. It is an old cd-rom (2x, panasonic I believe) that connects to the panasonic slot on my old Zoltrix 1600 SB compatable sound card. I think the CD-Rom is IDE (I never had any docs for it) for I have had it working on my computer (the one I use everyday) while connected to the IDE controller on my Motherboard. Anyone have similar problems? Any help? I have tried to find the drivers for my CD-Rom but have had trouble finding them, because I was going to try the autoboot??? file. [newbie] Cd-rom trouble upon install
Hi, I'm rather new to linux (all I have done is used other systems, and installed it on a few computers). I have an old 486 box kicking around and I want to install Mandrake 6.0 on it (I've installed it no problem before, just not on this box). The trouble is when I try to install it, the installation cannot find the cd-rom. First of all the cd-rom is a panasonic compatible drive (nscd-2x-p) which plugs into my SB compatible Zoltrix 1600 sound card. During the install I'm given the choice to choose my type of cd-rom, I choose the non-scsi route and then select soundblaster/panasonic for cd-rom. Autoprobe fails to find it. I have tried to do it manually with sbpcd=0x220,7,1 but it hasn't worked (maybe I'm doing something wrong here) Any ideas? thanks, "The Universe is, at any time, what you say it is." James Burke
