Borrow someones Windows box, setup your Hotmail account so you can send
and recieve the email via POP3. Doesn't 'fix' the problem, but you get

[newbie] SBLive Help

2000-10-08 Thread Harvey Cummings

I have a SBLive. The driver installed properly with
no errors. However it still will not work.
in Sound Drake I get all "-1's", and when I do a
"cat /proc/pci" it says that my vidio card,
network card, and sound card are all on IRQ 9.

I've tried to change the IRQ through the BIOS and
then Through windoz. I don't have enough
control through the BIOS and windoz says it won't
(peice of Crap). Even though I have seen
windoz change them from "11" to "7" and finally to
"9".
Any help would be appreciated.

[Fwd: [newbie] Wrong Kernel Reported]

sending it.

Hi Cindy,
 I think things would work well if you added "-2.2.16-9" after "vmlinuz"
(ex: image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-9).
 Although you have 2 kernels on your hard drive, lilo only knows about
the first. The "link" is only to the first kernel. In lilo.conf, you
must configure kernel 2.2.16-9.
 If you wish, you can have both kernels in your lilo.conf file, in case
the new one doesn't work. When you boot up, if you push the tab key at
"boot:" you can choose which kernel your system should use.
 I would do it this way"

 Under the first image section image=boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-9
   label=linux
 place a copy of the entire first image section, with the following
change
image=boot/vmlinuz-2.2.15-4
label=old
 This way when you press the tab key, you will have a choice between
"linux", "old", and whatever boot ups you have on your system. You can
have as many kernels listed in your lilo.conf file as you wish, deleting
them when no longer needed.
 When you use /sbin/lilo, you are giving lilo.conf's instructions to
lilo. If you made an error, /sbin/lilo will tell you. Otherwise, you
will get a message like:

$lilo
Added linux *
Added old
(whatever else is going to be there)
The asterisk (*) means that your new kernel which has the label "linux",
is the default.
 Reboot, and have fun.
  I hope this helps. If you need more info, write again. The wonderful
thing about linux people, is that we happy to help each other.

Hi Cindyb,
   You downloaded Kernel 2.2.16-9, but did you tell your system this was the
kernel you wanted used?
 1. Open /etc/lilo.conf with a text editor (ex: pico /etc/lilo.conf).
  Change
  image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.15-4
   to
 image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-9
 2. Tell lilo to make the change by entering /sbin/lilo on the command line.
 3. Reboot.
 Everything should be fine. If not, send another e-mail.

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.0 installation

2000-01-29 Thread Harvey B. Herman

I had exactly the same problem. When I checked the cd using Windows it
read the directory but not the readme(s) down one or two levels. I then
downloaded the iso file once again from another mirror (can't remember
which one) and burned another cd. This one was readable with Windows and
installed Linux successfully.
Did I need to download again? Who knows, but it is strange that we
independently had the same symptoms. Was it the iso file or a bad burn?
You tell me, all I know that it finally worked.

Hi Steve

My name is Chris Harvey and I have just loaded Linux for the first time. The
installation went OK, I had a bit of trouble configuring my video and monitor
but that seems to be now resolved, the problem is that that is will not boot
from the HDD and I have to boot initially from the floppy after which the hard
drive takes over. It is then OK to the login screen, the problems really start
when I try to access STARTX after which the whole thing slows down
dramatically and eventually locks up.

Any thoughts please

1999-01-17 Thread Harvey Janson

Hi,
 I had the same problem with a new computer last June. On Aug. 11 or 12,
SiS wrote a Linux driver for SiS530.
 Go to

   http://www.sis.com.tw/driver/mb_530.htm

 There you will find at the bottom of the page, a readme file, a
compressed file telling you how to configure the driver (gz), and the
SiS530 driver (gz).
 I had to download the driver onto a floppy with IE5 (Netscape didn't
work)
 Then I installed the driver in Linux, using the command line.
 If you have any problems, let me know. I mightbe able to help.
