Re: [newbie] once again: ISDN setup

2000-05-18 Thread nodyak0

Apologize for the late response, I think that 'profile' is either a user
name or something you will have to setup on your system so you can create
the files that are 'myisp' and 'mycard'. Those will be to identify your
ISP and your CARD for your ISDN.
I am also a newby and am just guessing, Denis is this in the correct
ballpark?

Just thought this may give you some info, you may know already, when LiLo
boots up all files are set to READ ONLY until boot is completed. This
may be what you are seeing flash on the screen. I have installed
Linux/ManDrake 7.0 Complete about 12 times, trying out different installs
to see which was good for me. Have not had any problems except where I
have made errors in my choices. I have a locally put together CPU AMD K6
II 350meg 32m RAM 3D Sound/w modem & video on the MOBO. My modem is a
Barfmodem, have not been on the NET with Linux yet. Have not given up.
You may have a problem with some part of your H/W check it out very
carefully then try it again. Just for your info I have been working on a
Packard 'Barf' Bell that has had a H/D problem, Conner CFA850A (850m)
H/D, died the other day and am attempting to recover the software if
possible. I have a friend that works on CPU's for living that has 13 1.2
gig Conner H/D's that have died on peoples CPU's he has repaired, I hope
your H/D is NOT a Conner.

Re: [newbie] Installing Linux Mandrake 7.0 with Lnx4Win

2000-05-17 Thread nodyak0

Again I would like to apologize for the late response, have had Major
problems with a Packard 'BARF' Bell, been working on that for the last 5
days.

As for what I have, Win98 SE/w PLUS installed then did the PartitionMagic
thingy and then installed MD/w what ever they suggest for dual booting.
Then learned of the Lnx4Win and did a complete reinstallation, reformated
the partitions so the first install was removed. After the install it
took about 10 minutes to start the KDE, that is UNAcceptable for me.
Then I learned of the included info from their own docs and thought I
would POST it here every now and then.

I have a AMD K6 II 350 meg, 3D sound, PCI Modem (PC-Tel's HSP56), video
on the MOBO, PC-Tel has put out some software to use their modem in
Linux. I have not been able to compile it to match my system, personal
probs there, not enough time in a day to do all that needs doing.

P.S. I would like to apologize for so late a response on this but I have
had MAJOR probs here with a Packard 'Barf' Bell with a Conner CFA859A HD.
It died, lucky to have a WD84A 8.4gig HD with some of the software I
needed. Have had to install a new O/S (DO$) so my Wife can have a system
of her own again. At the present time having to share my system until I
have hers fully up again. One other thingy, have a friend that works on
CPU's and says he has 13 1.2gig Conner H/D's that just died suddenly,
that is normal for the Conner H/D's. So would not recommend using the
Conner any more.

thanks,

Re: [newbie] ALL CAPS and Navigator

2000-05-11 Thread nodyak0

What I do to correct problems with the KBD is shut everythingy OFF and
then disconnect the KBD. Turn it over and remove about 12-15 screws to
open the KBD. Then remove another 15-18 small screws turn the printed
circuit card over and using a typewritter eraser clean all of the
contacts for each key. If needed using a cotton swab clean all of the
keys undersides and then putting all back together and restart. Problems
are GONE.

Re: [newbie] Re-Installing Mandrake

2000-05-05 Thread nodyak0

DO NOT even consider the 'Lnx4Win' install method. Here is a direct
quote from their own books:

"Linux-Mandrake

Install Guide

MandrakeSoft

January 2000
http://www.linux-mandrake.com

Chapter 5 : Using Lnx4Win

Lnx4Win is what you need if you don't want to partition your hard disk at
all.
This Program will create two files on your Windows partition which will
hold
your Linux-Mandrake system: one file for the data and one for the swap.
This
installation is undoubtedly the easiest, but, has its disadvantages:

it is slow in comparison with a real installation: loopback mounting of
a file (this is the method used) is not as fast as a filesystem located
on a dedicated partition;
if you have to re-install Windows, your Linux-Mandrake system will also
be lost...

However: this is a good way to discovery Linux-Mandrake without tampering
with
your hard drive.

This is not recommended by very many people with ANY experience on Linux,
nor
from any Newbies that know how easy it is for Windows to crash, if that
happens
then you guessed it, a REINSTALL of Linux will be needed. If you do a
regular
install with the repartitioning of your hard disk and Windows crashes, as
it is
good at doing, then Linux will still be there on its own partition
waiting for
your return. Your decision alone. GOOD LUCK"

don
I thought I knew that I knew what I thought
But now I know that what I thought I knew
Isn't what I know I think I thought I knew.

[newbie] Short Quote:

2000-05-05 Thread nodyak0

A short quote from the Help file with Zone Alarm:

"ZoneAlarm provides essential security for any computer connected to the
Internet, especially those with always-on DSL or cable modem connections.
ZoneAlarm protects you from malicious programs, like Spyware and Trojan
horses, by allowing you to control your computer's Internet traffic and
how applications access the Internet.

ZoneAlarm's Dynamic Firewall can block attempts to connect to your
computer from the Internet. High Security Level makes your computer
invisible from the Internet so you won't be a target for hackers and
intruders. Security levels provide the most convenient way to configure
the firewall, without requiring you to program protocols and ports."

Just a short quote, END OF POSTS ON THIS SUBJECT FROM ME!!

My $1.03 worth,

The only time I had a problem was when I first installed Win98 on my new
system and had never done that before. Now I know what was not done
correctly and everythingy is working just great. I use the 128bit
encryption NetScape Navigator 4.08, very stable and not so big and
bloated as the Communicator. I had gone to that site recommended by
someone on this mailing list that checks the security on your system, and
it is tightern' a gnats whatchamacallit. Also that trouble with the
viruses in the wild is why I use Juno mail, I do not accept attachments.

You may have to REINSTALL from the CD and do a DEVELOPER type UPGRADE, I
just went through that same problem of 'Command SetUp not found' and did
a Developer install and one of the selections was 'SETUP'. Have not
tried it as yet, trying to read some of this mail (115 messages).

Re: [newbie] Apologies not necessary here......

2000-04-24 Thread nodyak0

NO PROBLEM, I just have to let all know I am still here reading and
learning. I have to give a lecture every now and then and this is one of
those 'then's'. 'Now' was the other day. I also like to post how to
leave this group correctly so if for some 'UnKnown' reason someone want
to 'not receive' any more, about 2 weeks ago some people wanted out and
were made FUN of on here which I feel was NOT the way to treat others
that are trying to learn. So if you want OUT just go to the location
where you requested this group and do your thingy.

Here is a quote from the verifying message from them:

"This is a mailing list for new-mandrake users. Most of the discussions
on this list concern installation problems, and configuring a desktop
computer.

More information on mandrake mailing lists can be found on:

http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/flists.php3"

Have fun and learn,

Re: [newbie] OT--BIOS

2000-04-24 Thread nodyak0

Yes you can FLASHUPDATE your FlashROM, but; only for the original
manufacturer. It may be possible to go and purchase a new BIOS chip and
install it yourself but would not recommend doing same. There are
thingys that could destroy your system or just the new CMOS (BIOS) chip,
ESD (Electro Static Discharge) for one and another is if not installed
correctly other problems will hamper your use of the new BIOS.

Just to give my credentials on this matter, I have about 45 years
experience as a Journeyman Electronic Repair with O'scope, meters,
generators, etcetera, usage as well as repairing the same.

I do not speak for all on this list, but; all of these "sorry" and
"apologies" are not necessary. We are all new and need to read as much
as possible and learn more than we ever new we did not know. I for one
like to read these postings to learn as much as I can for now and future
use. For those of you making your first post, go for it and give as much
info as you can, type of system (name if it has one that can be used in
mixed company), type and speed of CPU, MOBO type and name, amount of
memory size of HD and any other attached, or going to be, hardware so
your questions can be answered keyed to your system if at all possible.

Excuse me for interjecting this, just feel some of the newerby's may need

am more of a lurker than a jumper in'er on these thingys. Not smart

Have you considered using the 'l -l |less' that is the 'l' command with
'-l' and then the '|' (pipe symbol, upper case of the 'backslash') then
type in 'less'. The info will fill the screen, one screen at a time and
you can use the arrow keys or Page Up and Page Down to read everything

Jim,

Just so you can make an informed ERROR read the following quote from the
Users Refernce Manual for Mandrake:

"it is slow in comparison with a real installation: loopback mounting of
a file (this is the method used) is not as fast as a filesystem located
on adedicated partition;
if you have to re-install Windows, your Linux-Mandrake system will also
be lost..."

If you still want to use lnx4win go ahead but it IS NOT recommended.

Re: [newbie] I thought this was supposed to beat Windows hands down on stability!!

Excuse Me, I am for ONE of the very inexperienced users of either Windows
or Linux, I do not think there are any here that are any newer at either
one than myself. I just started with Linux/Mandrake Complete v7.0 from
Macmillin Software, about 2-3 weeks ago or maybe a month. Not sure at
this point. I do not know how to do any COMPILING or installing of any
of the software from the Linux side. I do have some experience with the
installing of Linux/M because I wanted to learn as I went and find what
would work for me, if what I have learned can be of any service to others
then I try to respond with what I know works and with what HardWare. NO
Linux/M is not to blame for all of the troubles some are having, neither
is the OPERATOR or the Hardware. The one thing that is needed by any
that have a question is a little background on what you have as HardWare
and the error messages you received when your problem started or ended
your working. These people in this group that are willing to HELP need a
little of the HELP from each that are asking so they can HELP you. STOP
the BLAME game and use your head and expertise what ever it may be to ask
your questions and GO forward NOT backwards and complain. These people
here are GOOD at what they do and are willing to HELP you so HELP them as
best you can.

[newbie] FW: Gender of Computer....

2000-04-09 Thread nodyak0

This is OFF subject but I feel all can benefit from them and enjoy a
little HUMOR.

don
I thought I knew that I knew what I thought
But now I know that what I thought I knew
Isn't what I know I think I thought I knew.

- Forwarded message --

 Computer Humor

An English teacher was explaining to his students the concept of
gender
association in the English language. He stated how hurricanes at one
  time
were given feminine names and how ships and planes were usually
referred
  to
 as "she".

One of the students raised his hand and asked, "What "gender" is a
  computer"?

The teacher wasn't certain which it was, so he divided the class into
  two
groups, males in one, females in the other, and asked them to decide
if
  a
computer should be masculine or feminine. Both groups were asked to
give
 four reasons for their recommendation.

The group of women concluded that computers should be referred to in
the
 masculine gender because:
  1. In order to get their attention, you have to turn them on.
  2. They have a lot of data but are still clueless.
  3. They are supposed to help you solve your problems, but half
the
  time
 they
  ARE the problem.
  4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that, if you had
  waited a
little longer, you could have had a better model.

The men, on the other hand, decided that computers should definitely
be
referred to in the feminine gender because:

  1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic.
  2. The native language they use to communicate with other
computers
  is
  incomprehensible to everyone else.
  3. Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for
  later
  retrieval.
  4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself
  spending
half your paycheck on accessories for it.

2000-04-07 Thread nodyak0

Well I would like to appologize for being so far behind the CURVE at
this time. I had to be OFF the air for a few days this week and when I
downloaded my mail there were 553 letters and when I sent out the last
post I made there were another 45. I will not respond to any of these
unless they are like the last one about installing from within w..DO$.
That is one operation I feel should not even be offered by any thing that
is to run Linux.

2000-04-07 Thread nodyak0

Here it is again from the User's Guide for Linux:

"it is slow in comparison with a real installation: loopback mounting of
a file (this is the method used) is not as fast as a filesystem located
on adedicated partition;

if you have to re-install Windows, your Linux-Mandrake system will also
be lost..."

This is a direct quote from the software version on the CD, if you are
wanting to see what all it has to say.

You may also use from 'lilo' prompt "linux 1", for single user; "linux
2", for multi user/wo network; or "linux 3", multi user/w network,
leaving out the quotation marks. This will get you into a command line
in 'Text' mode.

Re: [newbie] Linux Hangs.......

2000-03-30 Thread nodyak0

'ctrl-alt-backspace' have done that before and think this is what has
caused some of the probs I have experienced in the last 2 weeks. Thank
You for the response. I would recommend anyone that is having a prob
with their system hanging and cannot use the keyboard or mouse do the
"OFF" thingy and wait about 15-20 seconds for Memory to be 'FLUSHED' then
do the "ON" thingy. When it boots back up if you read very fast you can
find where it will tell you the system was not closed down correctly and
"fsck" is being run on some of the files [OK] will appear at the end of
each line. Everything comes backup with "NOPROBBOB".

Re: [newbie] Problem starting up: fsck command not found

I do not know about your situation, but I did about 12-14 installs to see
how they each respond and how well they run etcetera. Well I also found
some times doing an upgrade will put additional files on your system that
were left off the first or second time. I would call this a 'BUG', like
a big old ROACH really. I have friend that calls a 'BUG' undocumented

Re: [newbie] zip drive problem

I have not gotten my External Parallel Port ZIP Drive to work yet either.
Will advise you though in your addition to 'fstab' file:

/dev/hdd /mnt/zipdiskvfatuser,noauto,rw 0 0
 ^
error
/dev/hdb

if your ZIP is an internal external I am not too sure. The "hdd" is
telling your system it is the 3rd Hard Drive or in Windows 'D' drive. In
Linux your floppy drive is not in the same category as the HD's, in Linux
it is Identified as 'fpx' (x=1,2,3,4 a digit). Your first HD is 'a',
second HD is 'b', third HD is 'c', etcetera. Most newer systems can
handle up to 4 HD's with out having to use an additional Controller. I
am sure most of you are aware of this, I just want to show I do know
somthing, even though it may not be of much help.

[newbie] ZIP on hold..

2000-03-30 Thread nodyak0

Have not had much luck with the ZIP drive so checking out some of the
info on the WHEEL mouse, mostly for Microsoft. I do recomend reading the
'man' pages on 'gpm' and 'imwheel' before you install them in the
'AutoInstall' file for 'KDE' if nothing else but to learn a little about
commands and how they work. I have not had any luck in making anything
work execpt the sound. Everything else is giving me trouble, NOT giving
up though. I attribute most of this trouble to the fact I am NOT a
Programmer nor even a Hacker, just a Keyboard Jockey with training wheels
and they are 4 each and very BIG. I need them.

I would NOT use Lnx4Win on any CPU. If you have a crash in Win you will
have to reinstall EVERYTHINGY. Plus your system will be extremely

NOT good. If you use the 'lilo', which is the BEST, you install
Linux/Mandrake to a seperate Partition. Lnx4Win is installed PIGGY
BACKED on Win is the best explanation I can give. It is NOT in a
seperate Partition.

Re: [newbie] xterm not refreshing correctly

2000-03-29 Thread nodyak0

I am sure you have tried using some of the other window managers. I have
found that the 'Icewm' is very easy to use and can move around very easy.
A different windows manager may give you a clue on this prob. If it is
repeatable in a different manager then it is system wide if not it is
just in kde or which ever one you use mostly.

Lance,

I have tried both 'insmod' and 'modprobe' for 'ppa' and 'parport'. No
luck either way, even have done the 'lsmod' to check for the listing,
NOTHING. After having some probs with one way of installing should I do
the 'modprobe -r' to remove any installs that were from other attempts?

How did you install your ZIP drive as "hdc"? When I did attempt to

Re: [newbie] 6.2 Requirements

This forum is the correct place for ANY questions if you need assistance
with any of Linux, mostly Mandrake, but we will work with any of them if
we know how. As far as I can tell from my system even with Mandrake,
YES, you can select what you want installed. It may NOT install ALL of
the software, but will give you enough to run and test to your hearts
content. NO, I am not experienced with any of this software, but I have
done about 12 different installs my self to see what worked and what
should be left alone. If you do the 'SERVER' install, which is the least
amount of software installed, you can then go back and RE-install (as a
fresh install) over that for what ever you like.

I agree with the different installs to see what your system is doing with
and in each. I am NOT a programmer nor even a hacker, just piddler and
wanting to learn as much as I possibly can about MY system. If what I
learn can be of any use for anyone else then I will pass it on for all.
I DO NOT keep anything to myself if it will benefit any others. As you
can see from the postings put forth from my addy, mostly useless
rhetoric. I have done the 'Developer' install some time back and do not
recall exactly what all took place either. I have had the mouse doing
the 'Jerks' and pauses all over the place. The HDD light usually is
lighting up the room when that is happening, very busy, even when nothing
has been started. There have been times when 'Ctl+Alt+ Backspace' would
not even work. After about 1/2 hour I did the NO NO, RESET to regain the
HIGH ground. I would recommend doing the reload as though it were a
fresh 'Install' so the Partitions will be reformatted for you and if
there is any software that had been installed that was not really needed
would be removed before you do an install that is more conducive to what
you would like.

Have fun and learn from the experiences,

When you did your install of Mandrake or what ever one you are using you
are instructed to create a user with a password. You are also told to
put a password on the root access. If you did not then I would recommend
doing the install again and this time WRITE DOWN THE PASSWORD so you can
use it the next time you need it. That is what I have had to do, besides
you learn more about your system and find that more software will be add
the next time you do an install. Why this happens I do not know, you
would have to ask the "GURRUUES" at 'Macmillan' and co.

Excuse me, if I may, it appears that Macmillan/Mandrake 7.0 is a little
confuse as to what it is supposed to do with all of the software. I have
done about 12 installs, some different like 'Sever', 'Expert', 'Normal',
etctera. Some took over 5 hours some took as little as 40 min. None did
install all of the software the first time around, had to go back and do
an 'Upgrade', or what ever it is called. Not just one some times several
to make most every thing work. The last install I did was 'Expert'
'Normal' my system is a DUAL booter, Win98 and lilo. Linux runs as fast
or faster some times than Windidnot. I have an AMD K6 II 350m 3D
Processor with 32 meg RAM. I have had probs with the mouse taking
t long to respond and found usually I (underlined) did the
mistake of trying a different controller for my mouse to see if any other
would work, they DID NOT. I have a Microsoft Wheel Mouse and the Generic
(PS2) is the only one that will work for me, not even the 'imwheel' will
work. I am not through with that yet have not tried all options at this
point.

Just food for the weary that may get into big of a hurry trying to get
their system up and running too quickly, need to READ, READ, READ, READ,
READ, READ, READ, READ, READ, READ, and when you think you have read it
all go on the WEB and READ, READ, READ, READ, READ, READ, READ, just to
catch up with TECHNOLOGY while you were READING.

Re: [newbie] Linux is so slow... Please help

2000-03-26 Thread nodyak0

To all that are having probs installing MacMillan/Mandrake 7.0. I did
several different installs to see how they went and how they performed.
Well the standard install without using Power Quest BTmagic and do use
the "lilo" is the best performer. Also I found that when I did
additional 'upgrades' or 'updates', what ever it is called, there were
additional programs installed. For what reason is not clear but
performance is the best when you DO NOT use the 'Lnx4Win', for sure. I
have had times when my mouse response will take up to 5-25 minutes to
react, well do not use the 'KDE Control Center' and access the Keyboards
or Keys, for ever. I use the BIG 'K' on the 'Panel' then 'Settings' and
do them individually, NO PROB BOB!!!

I hope this is GOOD for you as it has done me WORLDS of it,

Re: [newbie] cmi8330 onboard sound card and mdk7.02

2000-03-26 Thread nodyak0

Try using "soundconfig" without the quotes. I have an AMD K6-II 3D
Processor/w sound, modem and video built in to the MOBO. Nothing works
to make the sound operational except this method. It will tell you the
video is running but just click on the 'Yes' each time, I did and it
works fine. This is run from within 'Konsole' or 'Xterm', or logout and
get to a 'root' access before the 'X' starts and run it there.

Re: [newbie] linux ref book

2000-03-24 Thread nodyak0

Bill,

I went to the TUCOWS website and downloaded the 'Winrar' 2.7Beta2 and
used that one. I could not get any response from the other location that
had the 2.7Beta3. I used WinZip to unzip them to the "...rar and ...r0?"
files. The Beta2 works great, actually when I started on running the
Winrar on those files they came up with a 'name change window' and after
the first two files I went in through Windows Explorer to make the other
changes. Then everything went smooth as silk. They all become one .pdf
file and is readable in Adobe Acrobat Reader. That is the best I can do
for you with this.

I have NEVER had Lothar do anything for me. I go to a terminal 'Konsol'

Re: [newbie] Install

2000-03-23 Thread nodyak0

If I may add to that, when you use the Lnx4Win to install on any Windows
system you are not installing on a partitioned area. It is piggy backed
on the Windows and if you have a crash on Windows and have to
reinstallguess what? Right, Linux will need to be reinstalled as
well. Plus that install is very sss in responding to what
you want to do. I did about 9 installs on my Win98 system using the
PQPTMagic (Power Quest) and I cannot say enough GOOD things for that
software. It performed Excelently and the best and easiest to work with
is "lilo" (LInux LOader). Have fun...

experimenting with the DOSEmu-lators, xdos, xtermdos, dos, etcetera.
Have been into the DOS thingy with 'dos' but not on the drive where the
files are that I would like to run. Still experimenting.

Again THANKS,
don
I thought I knew that I knew what I thought
But now I know that what I thought I knew
Isn't what I know I think I thought I knew.

Jon,

Thanks for the info, it is an external Parallel with SCSI built into the

Fw: [newbie] I messed up

2000-03-21 Thread nodyak0

I am forwarding a message by someone else that has a request I am

Dan:

If you are still up out there, I messed up big time. I logged off and
shut
down the system without unmounting the zip drive. I finaly re-installed
linus to get the system back up. And of course I lost my email I had
tucked away on how to install the driver for the zip drive.

If you could send me that one liner again, I'd appreciate it.

2000-03-20 Thread nodyak0

Great to see someone has the ability as well as the forcefulness to take
the initiative to do something to improve our abilities to commuciate
without any of the excess baggage. In DOSy DO I use the e-mail softy of
EudoraLite to avoid the problems with some of the junk that is attached
to some of the mail. Well it has paid off in many dividends because we
received the "Pretty Park" attachment the other day and all we had to do
was "delete" that sucker. A friend uses the 'OutLookExxpress'thyself and
had to send a warning to all of his e-mail addys to correct the prob. I
for one do not open "any attachments from anyone just for that reason.
The only openings I do are from 'DownLoads' I ask for from sites like
Linux, TUCOWS, or any of the other secure and safe ones. Enough...

Re: [newbie] Modem not detected

Linux claims it is not supporting WinModems nor ever will. Well I have
some software that is called ZModem in a zip file format that is called a
LinModem (WinModem type) that is supposed to be for that WinModem. Have
not installed it just yet, still attempting to learn more about
Linux/Mandrake v7.0. There are a large number of thingys we have to know
to use Linux efficiently, if you are a HACKER or a Programmer this is
easy as falling off the "Ole' Log" but if you are like me, we have to
read, read, read, read and when you think you have finished you have to
read some more.

I do not remember where I was told to go to find this, it may have been
on the PCTEL website. Will check and find if there is a place in the
README file that gives any clues.

the 'lilo', it is much faster. If Ole' Windows crashes on you 'Linux'

[newbie] LinModem?

2000-03-15 Thread nodyak0

I have downloaded some software for the LinModem/WinModem and have not
been able to setup or compile or anything else.

Wondering if any of you have had any experience with this type of Modem?

The opening line from the TXT file with the Z-Modem software is as
follows:

PC-TEL HSP Modem Driver Module for Linux kernel 2.2.xxx
Serial Version 4.27.100 (7/16/99 Release)

Linux port done by William Hsu ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

I guess the best thing would be to write to the person that did the work
on creating it. But thought I would ask before I involved someone that
is ttto Technically Minded for me. I need "Run Jane run" and "See
Spot run?" No Jane is not running from Spot, that is a very OLD 1st
Grade reader, YES I am very OLD too, George Washington was my best man
when I was Married.

There,

just left that out. It is true though do run the 'ScanDisc' before doing
any partitioning.

Re: [newbie] BIOS, sound, and modem

2000-03-15 Thread nodyak0

This operation should be done when the VERY FIRST printing begins to show
on the screen. This is the BIOS setting up of your system. DO NOT WAIT
FOR ANY 'Windows' operations like 'Starting Windows 95' or 'Installing
Windows 98' or even any other 'Windows' operations. If you have American
Mega Trends BIOS or what ever it is this is when you need to press the
'F2', 'DEL', 'Insert' or any other keys that may require your input.
Different BOIS' require different uses of keys, check your books on your
system to see what is needed for your access to the BIOS setup.

Re: [newbie] Mandrake CRASH!!

2000-03-14 Thread nodyak0

Thank you very much ALAN for at least reading my posts. I know about the
upper and lower case on that, did it to show I was on the Windows side
from Linux. I have an 'Icon' on my desktop for accessing the DOS side
that was setup by Linux, if I remember correctly.

Phewy, I have never had to read sooo many messages on any of these NEWBY
sites before, the first time I down loaded 74 messages and when I had
answered some and read all and did the reposting, I downloaded 51
messages, now how many am I to receive now? Yes that is a long
sentence, wanted to make the point that there are a large number of
people answering these messages. This is really GREAT, maybe I will
learn something from all of this.

Again Al thanks,

Linux/Mandrake 7.0 comes with Power Quest Partition Magic and Power Quest
Boot Magic as well. I cannot say enough good things about Partition
Magic, it performed flawlessly but I had some trouble with Boot Magic.
That could be my problem. DO RECOMEND the Partition Magic though for
repartitioning for a DUAL boot system with WINDOWS 98 as the other
system. I did several different installs to see which one would work the
best for what I wanted. Lnx4Win, LiLo, BTMagic, etcetera and found
'lilo' to install and run faster than the others and was easier to setup
and use.

[newbie] Mandrake CRASH!!

Was in as 'root' attempting to setup my 'wheel mouse' as had been
explained earlier. Well my window to 'DOS_hda1' stopped responding and
when I attempted to 'xkill', NOTHING, NO response from the KYBD nor when
I clicked on the 'Icon' for 'xkill'. So I did the 'X' to close down and
then it completely froze. Had to use the CPU tower RESET, in Windows now
so I could send this out to you.

Will go back in as 'root' later, have to work on supper at this time.

I am not looking for any assistance at this time, just letting people

Re: [newbie] Where is the so called help???????

2000-03-14 Thread nodyak0

ENOUGH, please use your good sense of HELP for us NEWBIES and just ignore
these that think they have to FLAME others or be FLAMED themselves. Our
analysis of them is irrelevant and unnecessary. Pass over their FLAMES
and go on with your lives and ours. I know it is a little difficult at
times, to ignore, but give us, as NEWBIES, a big BREAK. We can over look
this type and find what we are looking for to go on.

I would like to thank ALL that are here to assist us with our learning
problems and our attempts to get a leg up on Linux/, what ever
the type of OS you are working with. I do think that Mandrake is the
most forgiving and the easiest to learn and use for US Newbies. I am so
new I have NEWBY, NEWBY, NEWBY in front of my access.

Now I have a question, what is required to correct the problem with the
nfslock FAILURE when booting up/w an error code of 101 showing as well?
I had a problem the other day that my system locked up and would not
recognize my KBD nor would the mouse assist in any way. The only
solution was to use the RESET button on the front of the TOWER. Now I
have this prob/w the nfslock and even linuxconf --status and linuxconf
--update will not correct nor even assist in HOW to correct this PROB.

Any ideas?
