[newbie] Share Mail Linux/W98 - T'Bird 0.7
Hi! I want to be able to share my mail/profile between W98 and Mdk 10.0 version of Thunderbird 0.7. I followed the procedure found at http://texturizer.net/thunderbird/share_mail.html and succeeded,in Mdk, to be able to read the details of each of the accounts used in W98. But I can not get access to the folders in each account and to the folders in "Local Folders" Can anyone help resolve this? [newbie] Where do I install???
The Newbie strikes again. I have two partitions on my my system - / (root) 13 GB on a one year old drive and /home 6GB on a 3 year old drive. I have just in stalled Mdk 10.0 again and now want to install Mozilla FireFox and Thunderbird. I have downloaded the compressed files (are they what one calls tar balls?) from the Mozilla site. I have figured out that I can use Ark to decompress the files. Now for the hard question - In which directory do I install programs such as these? I would like to be able to keep them as I go through further installs of MDK 10.x? Thanks for the help Preston Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Help - Again - Burning CD-RW discs
Hi again folks!! My problems continue. I used Partition Magic 5.0 to collapse my 5 Fat32 partitions to make room a Linux Install. I reduced the size of each Fat32 partition and moved the free space to the end and created a linux partition. Windows (C:) boots and I can see everything on the drive. I see drives D:, E:, F:, and G: but cannot access them from W98 or MSDOS and I can not see the files. BUT I can see and access these drives and files from Linux. And they show up in Partition Magic and Partinfo which i can run from a disk. Partinfo shows C: and D?, E?, etc. Do the question marks instead of colons have any significance? If I can not access these drives in W98, I am thinking I can burn them to CDs in Linux and copy them back to the themselves after reformatting the drives. I have just spent a couple of hours trying to write to a CD-RW disc - no joy. I know I am missing something. Can someone walk me through the exact process to copy files from one of the W98 Fat32 drives to a CD-RW disk? After I have successfully transferred the files back to the Fat32 disk I want to delete those files from the CD-RW and copy new files to it. What programs do i need to do this? The easiest way may be to use my CD-RW drive in UDF mode so that I can easily copy and delete files. Thanks for your help Preston Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Updating 10.0
I apologize for this question but I can not figure out how to update my newly installed Mandrake 10.0. The Mandrake Updates Applet in the lower right corner tells me there are no updates available. It seems from what I have read that there have been updates since the 10.0 ISo files were released. What am I not doing or what am I doing wrong? [newbie] Mandrake 10.0 - Install over Fedora Core 2
Hi! I am very much a newbie at Linux so please be patient with me and tell me if I am wrong I want to install Mandrake 10.0 over my existing Fedora 2 installation which is dual booted with W98. Do I have to worry about the existing boot loader? I have a current 30 Gig drive and an old 6 Gig drive on which resides Fedora. This old drive is slow so I am thinking of placing the Mandrake 10 install on both drives. By the way, I have only 128MB of RAM and a 900 Mhz AMD ATHLON CPU So here is what i am thinking Place about a 10 GB root on the 30 GB (Fast) drive. Place about a 400 MB /swap on the 6 GB (slow) drive and use the rest for /home What other directories do i need? What disk format should I use for / and /home? [newbie] Installing Mandrake 10 without creating CDs
Is there a way to install mandrake 10 without creating the CDs from the ISO images (which I have downloaded). Re: [newbie] Directory Structure
Marc - Thanks - that is the type of info this newbie needs. Assuming then that I install just one distro, what directory/partition structure should I use and what size should they be? [newbie] Directory Structure
I am about to install Mandrake and need some advice on the directory structure I should us. I have a 6 Gig drive which I will dedicate to Linux use. I plan to keep any data that should be used by both W98 and Linux in a separate 5 Gig Fat partition on another drive. I would like to be able to do new installs without having to do a reformat of my Linux drive each time. I also might want to try to install Fedora. So, how can I set up my directory structure so that I can upgrade or add another distribution with minimum disruption and without deleting applications that I have added. Re: [newbie] Transferring files from Windoze drives to Mandrake
Civileme! My install did not place my three Win partitions on the KDE desktop. Neither did it place the two CDROMs there. Although I have two floppies, the install placed only one non-specific floppy on the desktop and made it inaccessible to me as a user. Using the info you provided below, i placed my Win partitions on the desktop. Now how do I place the two CDROMs and both floppies on the desktop so that they are accessible to me as a user. Another question - how can i tell how much free space is available in each of my partitions? I know these are simple issues but i am still having problems grappling with the Linux paradigm. [newbie] Installation Problems
To anyone who can help me! Epox 8KTA3 motherboard, 128 megs RAM, ATI Xpert 2000 Pro video card with AGP (2x selected), Microsoft Optical Wheel USB mouse (in previous installs of MD 8.0 the mouse has/has not worked through both a USB port and a PS/2 port with an adapter). Installed done from the 2 CD ISO download, in the RECOMMENDED mode. I am about to try another of my reinstallations of 8.0 on freshly formatted partitions. Each time i have reinstalled, my mouse has worked as expected, has not worked at all with a frozen cursor, or has worked and then stopped working with a frozen cursor. On many of these install the install did not pick up my NIC - other times it did. Also, the system frequently told me that module xxx was missing. So, 1. Should I use the RECOMMENDED or EXPERT install format? 2. Should I go for a minimal install and gradually add more features from the 2 CD set? If so, what is the minimal configuration that will give me a GUI and network access? 3. When problems occur, what logs can I investigate to determine if the install or upgrade went well or had problems, what problem occurred to cause the mouse (or other feature) to disappear, etc. There must be a methodical and systematic way to go about doing the install and isolating problems. Another thing I noticed when i booted Win98 via LILO tonight, immediately after Lilo boots the selected OS, my screen is totally scrambled until the Win98 blue screen comes. I have noticed this a couple of times in recent days (in fact its occurrence may coincide with the mouse problem). Any and all help appreciated. [newbie] Logs!!
I continue to have problems with my mouse freezing (keyboard works). Here is the latest scenario. I did a clean install of Mandrake Linux 8.0. It worked beautifully for about a week. Then I figured out how the software manager and updates work, and I updated my system. All was well for 3 or 4 days. Then i installed a firewall - all OK for 2 days. During each of these periods I did numerous shutdowns and everything worked OK (I was bouncing between Win98 and Mandrake). Then, out of the blue. the mouse froze and i saw various messages about modules of various types not being available. Previously, to correct the problem, i have done a total reinstall after formatting the disk. This is getting old - i would like to be able to find the logs that might tell me where the problem(s) is/are. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Also, how do I go about fixing these problems without doing a total reinstall (the reinstalls sound too much like my experience with Windows) Thanks for the help. [newbie] Install Problem - No Mouse and Frozed Desktop
Hi!! Epox 8KTA3 motherboard, 128 megs RAM, ATI Xpert 2000 Pro video card with AGP (2x selected), Microsoft Optical Wheel PS/2 mouse (in a previous install of MD 8.0 the mouse worked like a charm) I reinstalled MD 8.0 into newly formatted partitions. When I boot into KDE or Gnome I have no mouse. In Gnome, the Tip screen comes up and I can not close it even with the keyboard. Focus is on the file manager and I can not change focus from it to the Tip screen or any other part of the desktop. In fact the mouse cursor (arrow shaped) is stationary in the middle of the screen. I have invoked mouseconf and selected the Generic PS/2 wheel mouse with no success. Could this be a video problem rather than a mouse problem? Any ideas? [newbie] Network Connection
I installed MD 8.0 a fe days ago and am slowly sorting things out bit by bit. On the initial install, my Network card was recognized (SMC EZ card (1660) ISA) but i was unable to connect to my ADSL (dhcp) server. After messing with the drivers, I obtained connectivity and all was well. I shut down and later rebooted - again my network card was recognized but the driver (NE2000 or compatible is recommended) was not loaded. For the life of me, i can not get things working now. Can anyone help me? Thanks Preston --- Betti Ann & Preston Smith Head of St Margaret's Bay, NS [EMAIL PROTECTED] MGB & RV Owners
[newbie] Installation Problems
Hi!! Thanks for all the help and hints that you have given me over the past few days. Today, I bit the bullet and did the installation. Of course, there are a couple of problems. I obviously selected the wrong generic monitor profile for my Darius HRV-1024 monitor - when I boot into MD 8.0 I get three images on the screen. How do I boot to a low level (VGA) or text mode so that I can change my monitor profile? And how do i go about changing the profile - I have yet to see anything clear on the screen so i can not research this info until I resolve the issue. Also, I use ADSL for internet connectivity. My provider uses DHCP and i have a Cisco 678 modem and an SMC EZCard 10 ISA NIC. The Internet wizard did not show my modem as one of those available when it probed. Any idea how to sort this out? Thanks Preston --- Betti Ann & Preston Smith Head of St Margaret's Bay, NS [EMAIL PROTECTED] MGB & RV Owners
[newbie] Install Questions
Sorry to bother you all with my questions. Should I use BootMagic or LILO to allow me to dual boot Linux and Windows 98? Opinions seem to me mixed on this. What are the pros and cons. The MD 8.0 manual says to set the BIOS switch that asks if a PNP OS is Installed to "No'. I have not seen that statement elsewhere. If I do this I lose my Network card under Windows. Comments please. [newbie] Mandrake Bankrupt??
Hi!! A friend of mine (who is in the business and is pro-OS/2 and anti-windows tells me that he heard the Mandrake had gone bankrupt. Is there any truth to this? [newbie] Disk partitions
HI!! I joined your list in the past 24 hours. I have downloaded the ISO images for MD 8.0 and am about to start the install. I have Windows 98 on my system and wish to have a dual boot capability. I also have Partition Magic 5.0 In reading the MD User document, I am left with the impression that the MD installer does not give me the option to allocate the existing unallocated space on my drives to MD. Rather it seems to infer that it will overwrite existing partitions to get the needed space. Would I be better off setting the disk up with the necessary Win998 and Linux partitions before I start the MD install process? I have one 6.4 GB drive (C, E, F, G, H) and one 1 GB drive (drive D). I will collapse the existing partitions on the large drive and make about 2.5 GBs available to MD. As a total MD/Linux newbie, I really have no idea how to proceed so can someone walk me through the process and provide me with recommendations on how large each of my Linux partitions should be? Thanks all. Preston --- Betti Ann & Preston Smith Head of St Margaret's Bay, NS [EMAIL PROTECTED] MGB & RV Owners
