[newbie] tar again

2002-11-02 Thread root
ok I tried to run the command to a tar file mldonkey in particular and I got
this error. It makes no sense to me

tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

this is the name of the tar file exactly that I'm trying to do
"mldonkey-2.00.shared.i586-Linux.tar.bz2.tar"

[newbie] console application in terminal

2002-05-20 Thread root

Hi !

I check incoming mail and files with F-prot for Linux, which allows a very
selective action.

I made a desktop link to the application and added the necessary options. I
made it run in a terminal. Mandrake version 8.2 is used...

My problem is the terminal disappears (closes ?) as soon as the scanning is
ended. I have to provide a log file to see what happened ... It would be
much easier if I simply could keep the terminal screen ...

Anyone seeing a solution (option to add ...?) ?

Thanks !

May be your connexant modem is a winmodem ...
In this case goto www.olitec.com to find a driver for Linux (exists for
Red Hat and Mandrake). My Connexant works well !

per this suggestion, I pulled /var/log/syslog and compared a failed login to
a good one, and see one difference. Below are the last few lines from a
failed login. I have more if we need them:

Jul 28 06:55:34 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-4
Jul 28 06:55:38 localhost last message repeated 35 times
Jul 28 06:55:38 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
char-major-180
Jul 28 06:55:40 localhost last message repeated 24 times
Jul 28 06:56:47 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module binfmt-
Jul 28 06:57:03 localhost last message repeated 3 times

On a successful login, "localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
binfmt-" is repeated only two times, then I get the same messge for a
collection of sound-* modules. The "can't find char-major-*" message repeat
the same number of times regardless of whether the login works or doesn't.
Meanwhile, I am successful in logging in via console mode if I do a 'restart
in console mode'.

Incidentally, the failed login has gone from the previous exception to the
rule, to where I have to make multiple attempts, including powering down, to
get signed in.

I did reinstall my printer last night, and fixed my halt problem per someone
else's documentation here. I assume the "now it is safe to turn off your
computer" is a windoze specific message, since I never see that. I get to a
message saying that the system is stopped after what seem to be all the
shutdown messages complete ok.

i was expecting no reaction, since I had never heard of that method of
logging on before. I hit alt-f4 at the point where otherwise I would enter
root and my password and hit go.

The original problem when attempting to login via the normal login panel, I
sometimes was bounced back to the login panel without getting logged in, and
when that happened had to reboot before being successful at logging in.

When installing, I took the defaults for security and the firewall. Before
altering those, I'll want an explanation of why the bounce occurs only some
of the time instead of every time. It seems to me if it was a security or
firewall problem, the bounce would be consistent instead of sporadic.

[newbie] login problem

2001-07-26 Thread root

running mandrake 8.0

on occasions following what is currently an undectable pattern, I get to the
login window where i would enter root or my user name and password, enter the
uid and password correctly, the system thinks for awhile and bounces me back
to the same login window.

I have to reboot under those circumstances, sometimes several times,
sometimes powering off entirely and waiting for bios to clear, before the
system accepts my uid and password.

I'm careful to comfirm that I have entered the password correctly, and caps
lock is off. The password is simple enough that mistyping multiple times is
not a likely explanation.

I've never had a situation where one (root or user) accepts but the other
doesn't.

login is set to start kde. I do not get to the kde loading panel before the
bounce occurs.

ideas?

[newbie] Anybody know how to get Sane working?

2001-03-17 Thread root

I've just installed MD7.2 and I was hoping to get my scanner working
with it. Although Sane is definitely installed, it does not seem to be
able to recognise my scanner - a parallel port Plustek OpticPro 9630P.
The scanimage command tells me that "No sane devices detected".

The documentation on the Sane homepage is somewhat sketchy, so I haven't
figured out if I need to configure anything further to get it to work.
If anyone knows how this is done or can point me in the direction of a
"Sane for the digitally retarded" document, I would be most grateful.

I have a Plustek 9630 parallel port scanner and there appears to be a

All advice welcome.

[newbie] Can't Access CD Drives - even as root

2001-03-13 Thread root

Here's a funny thing!

Whenever I try to access either of my CD drives, whether as root or
user, I am refused access.

Using Konqueror, I get the message: "Unableto enter file:/mnt/cdrom. You
do not have access rights to this location." - if root doesn't have
access, who does? My CD drives are shown under /mnt with little
padlocks on them.

Using a terminal command: ls /mnt/cdrom, I get the message "Input/output
error".

The only way I have ever been able to get round it is to boot from a
floppy rather than LILO - this is a hassle.

If anyone has encountered and solved this problem, I would be grateful
for guidance.

I am running Mandrake 7.2 (never had this problem with 7.1) and my
drives are a Mitsumi 4802TE (re-writable) and Samsung SCR232

around with them to see which one I like.

Why use linux cause windoze costs heaps and crashes heaps.

I am going to learn linux even if it kills me. I am having fun trying
to upgrade kde 1.x to kde 2.01 I have all the files on cd for suse 7 but
now the fun begins how do I use them. I did try kpackage but it won't
look at the rpm files, I think it might be me not knowing how to use
it, but I'm not complaining about this as this is part of the learning
curve. And having a lot of fun learning.

[newbie] Library Paths needed during install

2000-12-06 Thread root

I'm installing some software that gives the error "libexpect5.28.so is
needed by...".
I know that it is looking for Expect v 5.28. I have Expect 5.31
installed. I have even tried creating a symbolic link using the name
that the software is looking fordoesn't work. :-(

How can I find out which library_path the RPM software is looking for?
And how/where do I globally set it?

add this lines to your lilo:

other=/dev/hdxx
label=w2k
table=/dev/hdx
map-drive = 0x80
 to =  0x81
map-drive = 0x81

note that you need to put the right xx in other and table.
this work for me.

[newbie] 7.2 printing

Dear All, I went to the console and typed xpp and got a sign that no
printer was found. My printer is not being recognized. It was working
fine in 7. I have read all of the printer help pages and tried all of
the setups and none are working. Any ideas?

Clue: When I still had 7 I downloaded cups. I got a note that it could
not be downloaded because of some kind of conflict. That is when my
computer went haywire. I could not send out email after that then I
could not print either. I shut down, rebooted then I found that X did
not work. I decided to reinstall 7 the next day. The printer worked
again in 7. Later that day I received my 7.2 and installed that the next
day. Ever since I have not been able to print. Any thoughts or
suggestions? Thank you. Marcia

[newbie] Advice on Library Versioning in Linux

2000-10-25 Thread root

Hi,

I'm new to Linux but I cut my teeth on SVR4 so I'm pretty familiar
with Unix like systems; but I'm stumped on this one.

I'm trying to build a program that uses the mesa3d libs the package
(freedraft-0.38) uses the standard GNU configuration tools which are
normally very effective. In this case however it is not finding the
requisite libraries even though they exist. The problem seems to be due
to library versioning I can make the configure scripts work by
symbolically linking (for example) libGLU.so.1 to libGLU.so but this
seems to me to be wrong in that I shouldn't have to do this if library
versioning is working properly. I have run ldconfig as well as checking
that /etc/ld.conf.so contains an entry for the path where the libraries
are stored all to no avail.

Can anyone help here???

I also have a minor configuation query. When working on SVR4 it was
possible to run man on the console and then press the DEL key to kill it
and get back to the command promt without the screen being cleared. This
was very conveniant because the remnants of the manual page were left
displayed thus making typeing the syntax of an unfamiliar command less
of a memory feat. I can do this in any of the terminal windows supplied.
As soon as I press q to get out of less the screen is cleared. I would
like to change this behaviour but I don't know whether it is a function
of man less or the terminal app.

Any ideas???

Hi Andrew.

I'm running Seti@Home myself. In order to run the X version (graphics)
to work, you need the following command line:

./setiathome -graphics & ./xsetiathome

The -graphics option tells the setiathome prog to send it's output in a
format readable by the xsetiathome bit.

I also run a text-only version in another directory, i.e, two copies at
once, although the x client can only see one at a time.

Incidentally, have you tried look@seti - this enables you to see
multiple instances simultaneously - even if they are on remote
machines. There is even an option to view a skymap showing the area
that your signals came from!

Hope that helps.

Ozz.

Re: [newbie] *delicate cough* - some constructive suggestions

Hi guys.

I must admit that I am sending much of my e-mail from root. You are
correct in that this is generally a Bad Thing. However, I am making so
many changes to my system at the moment, many of which have to be done
as root, that it is impractical to keep changing.

Once I have got this laptop sorted I'll be back to my user account.

Thanks for your concern though guys #;-D

You are right - I made a typo for hda4 - that should have read hda5. It
is hda4 that does not exist on this system.

Thank you for pointing out my error.

Did you make sure that lilo is aware of the new kernel? You need to
edit /etc/lilo.conf to point to your new kernel, then re-run lilo to
enable lilo to find the new kernel.

When you say you are unable to dial out, what exactly is the problem?
What error message (if any) do you get?

I have a problem with my PCMCIA modem in that it says the modem is
busy. However, I can get round this by setting it to irq polling mode.
If that is your problem, then try using setserial as follows:

setserial /dev/ttyS1 irq 0

I recently re-installed Win98 SE on my laptop (I still need access to my
USB accessories!), and other than blatting lilo it worked fine.

My configuration has three FAT32 partitions on a single 6Gb disk, plus
the suspend partition, plus three Linux partitions!

hda1 - suspend to disk
hda2 - Win98 C: (FAT32)
hda3 - Win98 D: (FAT32)
hda4 - Extended, contains:
hda6 - Win98 E: (FAT32)

However, Interlnk does not handle long filenames - only the old
DOS-style 8.3 format. Also, it gets unreliable when used with large
disks ('large' in this case being a gig or so, IIRC).

It requires both machines to be running DOS - not exactly ideal for

[newbie] slow sound (mp3) playing

2000-08-06 Thread root

Hello !

I have installed Mandrake 7.1 and then started problems with sound (when
I had RedHat 6.0 there was none). The main problem is that MP3's are
playing about 2 times slower. You hear it like tape in slow-motion.
I've been checking almost everything, and couldn't find why is it
hapening. Sound Card is set properly, no conflicts, MIDI's are playing
OK, but MP3 ... not. Maybe it's MPG123 problem (xmms is using it too?).
I have got kind of old computer : P233 Notebook with ESS1688. I was
using sndconfig to configure sound.
If someone has any ideas of solving this problem, help me. Please ...

Oh yes - those were the days!

I remember thinking all my birthdays had come at once when I managed to
upgrade my Sinclair ZX81 from 1kb to 16kb RAM. And, that 16kb cost me
more than 64Mb would today...
The printer was a small thermal affair that printed on what can only be
described as silver toilet tissue at 50cps. One generally printed about
4 copies, and then created one readable copy by the liberal use of
scissors/tape...

ObOldFogie - I seem to remember a GUI bearing more than a little
resemblance to Windoze that ran on a 48k Sinclair Spectrum...

Browse through the packages and don't install the package related to X.

[newbie] Install did not load Linuxconf (desktop icon)

2000-06-15 Thread root

Greetings, group...I have a question about the recent install that I
completed...
My PC is a TP600, 300MHz, 96MB, 6.4GB, xircom cardbus (tulip_cb)
100+56k, and Linux Mandrake 7.02. Running pretty well, except the icon
for the Linuxconf on the desktop is dead...Can't excecute it, nor does
it show a process running when I attempt to run it (by clicking on it or
executing it by command). I looked in the RPM list and it is loaded. I
unloaded it and reloaded it with the CDROM, no change. I even tried
upgrading (and restarting) from the web.

I have access to the text version, and I am pretty comfortable with it,
but I really like the graphical one.

If anyone has a suggestion (other than be happy that it works!! ;) ),
please let me know.

Thanks in advance for your time and consideration,

Steve Weltman

[newbie] lilo troubles again (sorry!)

2000-06-10 Thread root

i'd like to thank dave & charles & the folks that offered help my lilo/
win2000 problem. unfortunately, i'm still having trouble with it :(

i installed the latest lilo build and went into linuxconf and told lilo to use
the linear option (which supposedley takes care of reading larger hard discs
like mine - a 20gig with win2000), I reboot and get the 1's and 0's...i then
edit my /etc/lilo.conf file by adding the lba32 line before my win2000 drive
entry, saved, restarted, and 1's and 0's again. I have tried installing lilo to
the mbr, to the root dir, and to hda1 where my win2000 partition sits on the
1st hdd without any luck; when i run /sbin/lilo in a term it gives the
following output:

Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible
Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible
Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible
Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible
Added linux
Added windows
Added floppy

so that's it...does anybody have the slightest idea as to why this is not
working? my win2000 part is FAT32, and not NTFS! i've done 4 linux installs on
4 different win95-98 machines without any problems and cant figure this one
out. please, for the love of god somebody help!

p.s. i know there is a NHF at linuxnewbie.org for this, but if there's any way
i can get through this without adding another partition on my win2000 drive
for lilo, it'd be great (if no, then ah wellhell with it - boot with the
floppy :(

web page because it's an excellent site that I refer to every once and a
while. I'm slowly collecting good Linux web links and hope to put up a good
Linux page on my site when I get some more time.

Unfortunately people have been working on the
elusive Winmodem to Linux drivers for quite some time and since Winmodems
aren't real modems, I think I'm still going to go support a company such as
Diamond or Viking that made 'real' (external/Linmodem) modems and make them
look nice. It could be some time before a driver is finished and all of the
  bugs are worked out.

that there are several manufactures that are writing drivers for
Linux.  Lucent Tech. is one of them.  Suggest not buying another

  Hi there,

Is there a rpm or
program that is a work around for the winmodem
problem?

I wish, I bought a new IBM Aptiva and it has a
Winmodem too :-(
You could take a peak at this wonderfull page
here

http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html

it lists most modems and if they are compatable
with Linux or not. I'm currently looking on the online auction eBay to see
if I can find a good cheap one.

Hope that helps,

 I'm installing LM 7.0 via
ftp install and all goes well until the installer tries to
retrieve mdkinst_stage2.gz - I always get the error message:
"Unable to retrieve the second stage ramdisk: Bad server

wrong? I have tried every combination that makes sense to
me wrt the ftp site name and Mandrake directory location.

    Where
would be a good place to begin to determine problem and make the necessary
correction to modem set up.  I am able to invoke Drakcomp, but do not seem
to run the set up properly.

a Gateway 500p, 4.2gig. purchased 60 days ago.  Howtos, man, available, but
I must be overlooking something.
    Do I
rerun setup, from the cd, again, or just attempt to
upgrade.

    I have
Linux Mandrake 7.02 on a separate HD, hdb.

    Another
problem is that Linux seems to take 4 or 5 minutes to start, from the boot

[newbie] basic sound, floppy and CDROM problems

2000-04-24 Thread root

Hi,

just installed 7.0 from the CD that comes with the Sams "teach yourself
mandrake in 24 hours". The install went pretty well- partitioned my drive,
picked up my network card, zip drive (i think!), network config worked first
time, IDed all the available memory - everything seems fine so far except the
three basic things - sound. floppy drive and CDROM drive
My sound card was correctly identified, but any sounds come out as tones - no
bells, roars, crashing windows - just flat tones. The card is an SB Live!.
Neither the floppy nor the CDROM drive will mount - any attempt comes back with
the error msg like (for the floppy) "mount: /dev/fd0 is not a valid block
device"
Help ! I would really like to find out what is happening here.

Thanks,
philomena

Re: [newbie] Internal ATAPI Zip drive

2000-04-22 Thread root

Martin;

To mount your internal zip drive; 1st - open a terminal window; 2nd - change to
directory "/mnt"; 3rd - make a directory for it (I used "zip"); 4th - now mount
it.
i.e.

cd /
cd /mnt
md zip
cd /
mount t- vfat /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip

The "sda4" in "/dev" maybe different on your machine. Check the
"/var/log/dmesg" file to see what your system thinks it is. Also note that you
cannot eject your zip disk until you umount the zip drive.

Hope this helps;
Bruce :-)

[newbie] hda/hdb

2000-04-18 Thread Bob Root

Attempting to install Mandrake 7.02 on a Gateway 500p, Linux will have it's
own HD(B). The conflict is that while attempting to install partitions the
boot finds HD(A) and locks up, which is as it should be, I think.

How do I correctly direct the setup to find HD(B) and ignore the (A)?

Using the partition program, Disk Druid.

[newbie] Intel i810 video and Mandrake 7.0

2000-04-05 Thread root

AlrightI need a little more help :)

I am running linux Mandrake 7.0 on a box that has the intel i810 graphics chipset
built into
the board. (Note: I would NEVER purchase a mobo with anything like this built in for
myself, but this is my box at work, and I didn't have a choice in that ;) )

Now, the problem is: I can't get the thing to work properly. I've gone to the intel
website
and gotten the two .rpm's needed for the install, and I've followed the intallation
directions as far as I could. Here is where I get hung up. The directions call for
me to
edit the XF86Config file, to add in the intel chipset. I have done this, and
rebooted, only
to have the system hang upon restarting the Xserver. I gives me a message about the
XF86Config file, and it not recognizing some setting with "My Video Card". Now I have
checked and re-checked the XF86Config for errors in my editing, but everything was
done just
as the directions called for.

Does anyone have any insight as to the problem? Have any of you experienced this
yourself?
Any soulutions whatsoever?

Thanks in advance!

Travis

P.S. - Thank you to those that helped out with the network card (3c905b) problem, I
now have
that resolved!
